"Ne, Kagome. Have you ever thought about taking the Hunter Exam?"
"Hunter Exam?"
Kagome asked back as she took another bite of the apple and wiped the dripping juice from her chin. It had been few weeks since she left the bloodthirsty Joker and unexpectedly bumped into Gon and Killua. Not a lot had happened since then. Gon and Killua still seemed to be the same happy kids, though she could clearly sense how much stronger they became since last time she had met them.
It was impressive and embarrassing at the same time. Ever since she was dropped in this world, she hadn't done any training. There were occasional creatures that attacked her in the woods but other than that, she was becoming rusty. Compared to Gon and Killua she was wasting herself.
And perhaps that was why Gon decided to ask Kagome about the Hunter Exam. Since the first time he saw Kagome at the town (Gon has no memory of the forest incident), he noticed how polished her nen circulation was. He also saw Kagome meditate a few times during their time together for the past few weeks, which he assumed was training her ten.
It took him by surprise when she didn't know what a hunter was. Her only response to Gon's explanation of hunters was, 'I hate this elitist society' mumbled under her breath. This was the second time Gon had brought up the topic of hunters to her in hopes of encouraging Kagome. It was actually Killua's idea to mention Hunter Exam to Kagome. When Gon asked why Killua simply said,
'I don't like people sulking around not doing anything. Besides, I'm sure she will pass the exam with ease. With that, she might as well leave us alone.'
Gon couldn't understand why Killua wanted Kagome to leave so much, but he assumed it was because of her personality. Kagome was bright and shining, and she easily reminded him of Aunt Mito back home. But there were also times when she would have a dark look on her face that gave Gon shivers.
'Killua, don't you like Kagome?'
He asked Killua once. Unlike when they were all hanging out at the town, Killua was distant from Kagome. Being the straightforward person as ever, Gon couldn't overcome his curiosity and asked Killua of Kagome. At his question Killua merely smirked and replied.
'I think she's a good person. She just has too many secrets.'
And after that, Gon never asked about Kagome to Killua.
"Gon?"
Kagome's soft hands on his shoulder woke Gon up from his own thoughts. Kagome was looking at him with a puzzled expression, and Gon smiled at her for reassurance.
"Anyways, if I could, I would love to take the exam. But unlike you and Killua my basic physical abilities are poor. And it's not like I'm good with my nen either. Even if I make it through the first two phases of the exam, it might be hard to pass with my current state."
At Kagome's rant, Gon's eyes suddenly shined brightly and Kagome flinched at his way too enthusiastically glistening eyes.
"How about we train you?"
"Huh?"
"Sounds like a good idea to me."
"Killua!"
Gon stood up from the floor and greeted Killua with his usual brightness and Killua waved his hand as a greeting. Kagome gave him a smile and a wave that Killua equally reciprocated but did nothing more. Killua walked over to where Gon was standing and looked down at Kagome who was still lying on the floor finishing her apple.
"We are younger than you, but you already know that our capabilities are beyond yours. I believe Gon and I are more than capable of training you. Besides, we are willing to do it for free so why not?"
Kagome pouted at Killua's cocky attitude but she knew very well what the child said was true. She had seen them battle before, and their physical capabilities matched that of young demons even. And judging by Killua's personality, he wouldn't go easy on her just because she was currently their travelling companion.
Besides, Kagome wanted to prove herself to Hisoka who simply scoffed at her when they parted. Her fist clenched around the half eaten apple, which crunched under pressure.
"Fine. Take a good care of me, coaches."
"Of course."
While Killua's cat-like grin made Kagome shiver in fright, Gon was simply happy that Killua didn't seem to dislike Kagome as much as he had thought.
