Here ya go. Note to the fans, just a short review helps keep me inclined to type so I know someone is actually reading the story. I don't know who is and who isn't a dedicated fan at this point.
May wiped her face and began pushing Seth. "We've got to hide." She muttered. They hurried off the street and hid behind the only available cover: An old sedan flipped on its side. They huddled against it and tried to keep quiet.
The vehicle's rumbling slowed to an idle. "Quick, get out of here." She whispered to him. Seth whimpered and hesitated for a moment, but conceded and lunged down an alleyway. "There!" She heard a man's voice yell, and heard the gunshots zip past after her friend. Seth turned the corner unscathed, and was gone.
"Damn. Got to keep an eye out for that thing now." Another man muttered, his voice having a lazier tone. Two doors slammed and May could hear footsteps. She could barely see the shadow of a hooded figure crouched on a rooftop. Hopefully push wouldn't come to kill.
"You sure you saw a person? It might've just been that hoodie." The second voice asked again. "No, there were definitely two there, and a normal zombie would have just charged the truck. I know what I saw, I might be getting old but I'm not blind yet!"
"Well let's say there was a survivor. That Hunter is still alive. What makes you think the survivor is?" The second man asked again. There was a pause. "That's what I want to find out." The first responded.
May held her gun ready. The two turned the corner, and she had her weapon pointed at them, and two weapons pointed right back. For a moment anyways. "Well look who it is."
She almost dropped her gun. The faces of Greg and Zack stared down at her. Something seemed off about them. "What the hell happened to ya?" Zack asked. May stared at them for a second. "What the hell are you guys doing all the way out here?"
"Well let's leave it at you should be glad you didn't come back to our camp with us." Greg said, pulling a medical kit off of his back. "Some idiot didn't see a chink in the fence and the zombies just flooded in."
"And where's the sex addict?" May asked, noticing a lack of the tall skinny weirdo from her first meeting with these guys.
"Randall was one of the first ones to go. Tank got to him. Let's leave it at that." Zack replied, keeping his eyes peeled for any infected. May glanced up at the rooftop. Seth had disappeared from view. That wasn't reassuring, given the situation.
"Have you been bitten before?" Greg asked as he finished bandaging May up, his voice a bit dark for her liking. His expression had turned stern as well. "Uh…No…" She replied. Greg stood up and exchanged glances with Zack. "But I've had just about everything else those zombies could do to me happen." She was suddenly becoming fearful of what was happening.
"But if I'm not a zombie yet…I should be fine, right?" She persisted. Zack and Greg were beginning to look like a threat in the back of her head, the way they were staring at her. "We've seen a lot of people get bitten..." Zack started. May noticed Greg's hand uncomfortably close to a pistol holstered at his side. "…And none of them make it."
May gasped and tried to back away from them, pressed against the car. "No. I'll be fine. I swear!" She yelled out in panic. She can see a shadow peering down from a rooftop. "May, do you really think you'd be better off as one of those monsters instead of being dead?" Greg muttered. His eyes held a sadness in them.
"I'm not going to be infected! If I was going to be infected, I would have been by now!" May screamed out hysterically. Greg shook his head. "May…I don't want to see someone as young as you are turned into one of those…things."
"So you'd rather see someone as young as me with a hole in their head from some sort of mercy killing?!" May fired back, causing Greg to take a step back. "I'm not going to watch another person become infected. I'm done watching people turn into animals."
"Then get the hell out of here. If I'm going to change, you don't have to watch it happen. You don't get to decide when I die!" And with that, she had her gun pointed at Greg. "I haven't gone through the past week of nothing but hell to let some old man kill me thinking that it's for the best."
The gun being pulled out was perceived as some sort of signal to Seth. He leapt from the roof with a screech and pinned him to the pavement. Zack aimed his gun, but Seth pulled Greg up and held the man in front of him as a shield, claws threatening to pierce into the jugular at the slightest provocation.
"Seth, don't hurt him." May muttered, aiming her gun at Zack, who put his weapon down on the ground in defeat. Greg let out a dry chuckle. "So this is that friend of yours? And I thought cannibals were as insane as you could get in this apocalypse."
"So I'm insane now? I'm not the one threatening to shoot people that have been bitten by an infected." May shot out, spite in her voice. Greg said nothing else. "I'm not nice to people that try to harm me or my friends. So you two are going to give me the keys to your truck and we're going to pretend that this never happened."
"They're in the ignition…" Zack muttered. May got to her feet and walked to the truck. Just as Zack said, the keys sat in the ignition. She turned them and the truck roared to life. She maneuvered it to face back the way it had come from. May could see the look in the eyes of the two men. She revved the engine. Seth dropped Greg and leapt into the bed of the truck. May floored the pedal, and the truck went screeching down the street. Zack and Greg grabbed their weapons and fired, but there was nothing they could do. Seth and May were gone.
May had found out what was so off about Greg and Zack. Their eyes showed expression, but had been dead for the most part. They had gone over the edge. Not in their right minds at all.
May gazed in the mirror back at them. They just stared back before finally disappearing into the distance. Two victims of the apocalypse before they had even died.
I decided that I wanted to bring back those two to expand a bit on character background, and I'm trying to build more on May having a stronger, less forgiving side than is let on. Probably not going to get the wanted results, but I'm okay with this nonetheless. I know it's a bit short, given the time between the two chapters, but I'm picking up the pieces of my screw up and I think we're back in full swing here.
