Chapter Ten: Any Port in the Storm
Lily's POV
It was raining and not a little bit. They had just entered the edge of the woods when the sky opened up and started to pour. They had ducked over an overhang of trees to escape the inevitable drenching.
"So where is this place that you found Sarah?" Lily asked her teeth chattering. The one thing in Ireland you could count on was the cold rain. She was tired, achy, bruised and hungry. Now on top of it all she was wet and shivering. She felt Aaron wrap his arms around her pulling her close, running his hands up and down her arms to warm her up. Sarah took Lily's hands in hers, and her eyes seemed to light up with an enthusiasm she had when she had been a child and had just discovered some new wonder.
"I found a good place to stay. It's not very far and we need to get you cleaned up." Alex came up behind Sarah and also responded.
"We need to lay low just in case our friend decides to come after us again. I don't think she will stay down for long and we can't travel in this weather.
Aaron nodded his head in agreement.
"Okay Sarah where are we going?" Sarah flashed a big smile and pushed her wet sopping hair from her eyes.
"Okay follow me." She squared her shoulders and grabbed Alex's hand and led them out into the rain. They only walked a short distance when she came to a stop under a tall white willow tree. She pointed in the distances at a point that to an untrained eye would not see it. Lily however did and it brought back memories of fairy tale stories that they use to tell to each other as children. The tiny little cabin was set back amongst the trees with moss covering the outside. It was hidden if you were just walking by and even harder to see in the fog that had started to form because of the weather. It had a very mysterious yet romantic feel to it and Lily had felt as if she had walked back into time. She let out a small gasp as she took it all in and felt Aarons tighten around her.
"Okay we need to get inside. It is abandoned isn't it?" Alex asked. He was still not sure of other people, always suspicious.
"It looks abandoned." Sarah answered him.
"We need to get inside and out of sight for the time being." Aaron said as he took hold of Lily's hand and led the group to the small cottage. Once they had found the front door Aaron eased it open and peered inside. After going the full way in while making the others wait on the front porch he scouted out the tiny house to find it empty of any occupants.
"Alright it looks like no one has been here in a while. It might be some kind of get away home so we should be okay." He said as he ushered the wet travelers in. Lily entered and scanned the home with the tiny rooms but it seemed to be well furnished. It had about four small rooms which included a kitchenette, living room, bathroom and a bedroom. Sarah and Alex both left the living room in search of supplies, while Aaron lead Lily to the couch, Sarah was there a few seconds later with blankets and a first aid kit and sat next to her. She put a blanket around her and opened the first aid kit. Aaron stood watching the two sisters. Sarah had started to dab at Lily's cuts with some kind of disinfectant that stung and made her wince. She met his eyes and nodded her head to him.
"I'm okay, really. Just a little banged up is all." She reached up to grab his hand. He rubbed his thumb over her hand to warm it up. "Really, I'm okay." After a few more seconds he nodded his head and turned to the small fire place.
"I'm going to get a fire going and we should see if we can find some food."
"Well I found some dry cloths and a few lanterns. The kitchen was my next stop." Alex said as he reentered the room with a pile of clothing and the lanterns in question. "We might be here for the night, that rain is not letting up and it will be dark soon. The fog will hide any smoke from the chimney so we can get a nice fire going to warm our girls up." He looked down at Sarah as he handed her a pile of clothing. She looked up at him with a smile. Lily thought for not the first time how happy the two of them seemed. They had been through so much in such a short time that it was nice to see everyone so happy.
It was about an hour later, everyone had changed, eaten and sitting in front of the fire. Lily had lay her head on Aaron's shoulder as she let her mind drift to the last forty-eight hours when a thought hit her. Something about the whole kidnapping and ordeal had left her with an odd feeling. It's as if she was missing some vital clue.
"So Sarah, where did they take you when they took you away the first time?" She had always assumed it was a facility much like the one where Alex and Aaron had been trained. Sarah seemed to go to another place as she tried to recover whatever memory she was trying to remember. Lily saw her take a deep breath and then started her story.
"There is a house, very isolated and gated. A lot like the one here, but there were lots of doctors and lots of tests. They would take us into these rooms with no windows, sometimes for hours or days at a time."
"Wait a minute…" Lily started to say as she sat up. "What do you me "we"? You weren't the only one?"
"No they were always bringing in new test subjects, that what they called us. Some of us survived the testing but others of us didn't. Then when the Facility was starting to be shut down, we were sent away, to other places. I was sent alone and then you found me." She looked up at Alex just then with a small smile of gratitude on her face.
"Well your safe now." Alex said as he pulled her close once again and kissed the top of her head.
"I just remembered something that I had read in one of the files I took." Lily started "It had said that they were doing some sort of testing on children. We know that they took you Alex as a kid and tried to create you but what if you weren't the only one?"
"I remember something being said when I was being moved. Something about them setting up shop somewhere else and that they had a new batch to break in."
"A new batch?" Aaron asked
"Yes as in a new group of kids."
"The Facility is active again." Lily said in alarm, a sick feeling settling in her stomach.
"I don't think they ever de activated entirely." Aaron answered and Lily's head started to spin. They were never going to stop and they just kept popping up. She suddenly felt exhausted and defeated. She then shook off her doubt and straightened before she answered.
"We need to find those kids." She expected a fight because three sets of eyes started back at her but all Aaron did was brush back her hair, kissed her temple and said.
"I know and we will."
