Chapter ten:
The Girl Of Neverland
When Awashonks said she would make Rose an outfit made out of Neverland she became very happy. She soon was being whisked by other Indians who would help Awashonks with the outfit. "Now child tell me something" Awashonks said as she started to measure her, "Of course Awashonks anything" Rose replied as she turned her head, but quickly jolted it back when one of the Indians barked out "Stay still." Even though Awashonks was one of the oldest she was one of the smartest people on the island, so she could sense something was going on between these two. "Does he like you?" she asked as she got up and walked towards a huge chest.
When Rose heard that she was caught off guard by the question and fell off the small stool she was on. "What do you mean" Rose asked acting all nervous. Awashonks who was standing in front of her shaking her head, "I know you like him" she said as the Indians helped her up. "Is it that obvious?" Rose asked. Before she answered she told the other Indians to go away, "To everyone else it is" she said as she took the last measurements. Rose who was very embarrassed by the situation was comforted by Awashonks by giving her a hug. "It's okay my child" Awashonks whispered to her.
"Peter just doesn't seem interested" Rose said as she started to feel close to her. Awashonks then she did something that nobody had ever done for Rose. "Can you do something for me?" Awashonks asked as she looked at her with a hint of wondering what she could do. Rose didn't know what to say so in order to not say the wrong thing she just nodded. "Great" Awashonks said as she reached behind her neck to unhook her necklace. "This is a very special necklace Rose" Awashonks said, Rose was surprised by the beauty and was even more surprised by that she was giving it to her.
"I can't accept this gift from you" Rose said as she saw that it was too much of a gift for her. "Rose I'm giving this to you because I think with you and your perfect spirit you need this" Awashonks said as she turned Rose around to put on the necklace. "Why are you giving this up Awashonks?" Rose asked. Awashonks smiled and told her to sit down, while she told her what happened.
"It all started when I was around your age" Awashonks started but was interrupted by Rose, "I'm sorry but how do you know how old I am." "Your thirteen same as Peter now don't interrupt" Awashonks said. Rose covered her mouth and let Awashonks continue, "Back before I even knew that Neverland existed I was in a tribe with my father Black Hawk was chief of his tribe the Sauk Indians everything you see here is because of Black Hawk." Awashonks said as she looked out the slit of her tipi, "What happened to Black Hawk?" Rose asked. Awashonks thought she would never have told this story again, but she knew that if she didn't it would control her for the rest of her life.
"Well when I reached the age of thirteen I had to go through a passing where I would then become next in line for the leader of the tribe" Awashonks said as she started to wipe the tear from her eye. "I was almost finished which took most of my young life to finish, on the day of my birth we were attacked." Awashonks stopped as she tried to calm down. Rose was interested by the story and knew it was the truth; she then gave her a hug and said "It's okay." That made Awashonks smile, and made her feel better.
"During the attack Black Hawk told me to go hide, since I had never learned how to fight since I was the only offspring from my mother and father, they weren't allowed to show me." Awashonks paused to think. "The next thing I knew I was hiding in an old cave that I found when I was on my seventh year, I thought I was free from all the attacking, I was wrong." Awashonks said as she looked at Rose. "What happened?" Rose asked. "All the men who attacked thought they had all of them, but there was one of them that knew there was one more." "He told them that there was still more, but they didn't believe him so he told them to give him twenty minutes and he will prove that there was more." Awashonks continued. "When he entered the cave I was very quiet making sure not to make a sound, but that only helped for the first thirty seconds, he found me and that's when I saw him" Awashonks said, "Saw who?" Rose asked as she was getting all teary as well. "I didn't catch his name, but he was a young man no more than twenty, he had short black hair, white skin that looked to be new to the sun, piercing ruby red eyes and a tailored suit." Awashonks described.
"What did he do to you?" Rose asked as she wasn't sure she wanted to know. Awashonks didn't say anything; she just quietly and slowly pushed her right sleeve up showing what the man did to her. What the young man did was so terrible it caused her not to even speak about it for the next twenty years. Rose was just so surprised that anyone could have done this. "He grabbed me with his left hand and took his knife and made sure that I would be permanently branded." She said as she cleared her throat. "The worst part was that wasn't the thing that was on my arm; He dragged me out of the cave and showed me to all the men that attacked my village." Awashonks said as she started to shake her head. "What did they do?" Rose asked, "They were stacking all of my people in a pile including my grandmother, grandfather, and friends" she continued to describe, "You see he knew what he was doing then put some sort of water on them that smelled really bad, then he said something to me that I'll never forget" Awashonks stopped to take a deep breath and calm down.
As Awashonks and Black Hawk watched as the men stacked every one of their five hundred Indian tribe into a pile, they could only think of what's next. "The man then grabbed me by the throat and said that he wasn't going to kill me or my father." Awashonks said, "I was thanking mother earth for what he just said, but what I didn't know is that once he threw me down onto the ground, he then grabbed his gun and…" Awashonks paused to give her a break from all the crying. "Did he shoot tribe members?" Rose asked, all Awashonks could do was shake her head, "Worse." She answered.
As Black Hawk and Awashonks knelt in front of the hill of their people, he then shoots the ground surrounding them. The moment that bullet hit the ground it caught on fire, "I could barely stand seeing all of them being burned alive and me just watching." She said as she leaned back into her chair. "What happened next?" Rose asked as she wiped her eyes, "He then turned to me and said that you will never forget me and I promise you it's not over" Awashonks said.
"I do have one question" Rose said thinking it might be the wrong time to ask, Awashonks turned to her and smiled "What do you have a question on?" Rose then stood up and said "Was this Black Hawks necklace?" Awashonks smiled, "That my child will be yours to find out."
Rose was trying to settle down after hearing what had happened, when one of the Indians from before came in and started to talk to Awashonks. She was very secretive and didn't like to be loud whenever possible. After they were done talking she looked at Rose and said "Your outfit is complete." As they walked outside there stood Peter and he looked really happy to see Rose. "I am proud that I am able to make another person in our land happy" Awashonks announced to the tribe, "Here Rose you will have the feel of Neverland and its magical presence." As one of the Indians approached Rose with a wooden chest Awashonks stopped him from opening it.
"Since this is a present more than it is a favor for Peter and Rose, I think she should be the first to open it." Awashonks said as let Rose into her tipi to try it on for the first time. When she was finally alone she took a moment to reflect on her good fortune, knowing that she now has a friend that she can talk to about anything. When she finally decided to open the chest, she saw how lovely it was, but all she could think about was if Peter would like it.
A few minutes went by and Peter was getting worried that she didn't like the outfit. Awashonks saw how nervous Peter was and walked over to him. "Why are you nervous Peter" Awashonks asked even though she knew the answer, Peter then looked at Awashonks and said "Because I know how hard it is to feel like you're at home and I hope this does it." Awashonks rolled her eyes; She then walked by the tipi to see if Rose was okay. "Are you okay?" she asked, waiting for a response. "Yes" Rose answered.
As Peter and everyone else waited to see what the outfit looked like she grabbed the side of the opening and let Rose walk out. Everyone was amazed by what the outfit looked like, except for Peter. Peter on the other was speechless; Awashonks leaned over to Rose and whispered "I knew he would like it." Peter signaled to Rose that she should follow him, and wondering why he wanted her to, she did. She looked at Awashonks and gave her a hug and said "Thank you for the gifts I'll never forget them." Awashonks and the Indians waved goodbye to them as they started to walk away.
After a while of walking Peter then flew them to a seclude area where they could be alone. "What do you think of the outfit Peter?" Rose asked, Peter who couldn't say anything finally talked, "I love it" he said, the outfit was perfect for her it showed off her curves, which made Peter hesitant to look at. It also had vines that were perfect for holding her weapon; one of the things that Rose liked about the outfit was that it was two different parts. One that covered her waist and one that covered her chest, but the most important part was that it showed her midriff, which Peter obviously liked since he couldn't stop walking around her and checking out "the outfit" as he said.
