I realized the other day that I never explained what Rift Children are. So I wrote an exerpt from Kari Dragonchild's book, Rift, a novel written three hundred years ago. Note: This is from Earth-Land. Oh, and Kari's work will come up later.

Rift Children are created by Rifts, cracks in the Magical world. Magic has often been misinterpreted. There is a layer of magic that coats our world like a blanket. Sometimes the magic becomes too much, and it bleeds into our world, creating magical children. When there are no cracks for it to bleed through, it forces a crack open. The force of the magic creates a Rift.

Some believe that Rifts have some form of intelligence. The argument behind this viewpoint is that they choose their - as some call them - victims. There is at least a little truth here. To understand, however, one must know how Rift Children are created.

It starts with the mother. Rifts are invisible to the eye, so she will have no knowledge of what is about to happen. When she passes over a Rift, it will analyze the child via magic. If the child's fate is not average, then it will choose the child and turn it into a Rift Child. The immediate result is that the mother goes into labor and the Rift closes.

A Rift Child is most dangerous to themselves and others before they enter double-digits. They can't control their magic, and as a result, kill themselves or others. This is what usually what happens However, it can be argued that they are equally dangerous after they enter double-digits. After this stage, they can control their magic and unleash it as they see fit. Fortunately, this is very rare.

The one benefit of being a Rift Child is probably the access they have to magic. Born from Rifts, they can access the magic that surrounds the world, leaving them seemingly tireless in battle.

For these reasons, they are dangerous.

The ironic thing is that she is a Rift Child.
