Chapter Ten
Let Me Go
When Cato opens the door to his room, Clove materializes in front of him, already perched on the edge of his - their - bed, still wearing her white dress.
"Why are you still here? I thought I told you to leave."
Clove chuckles. "That was the other me. Besides, I'm just a hallucination in your mind, Cato. You know I'm not real. And yet . . ."
Cato looks at her, waiting for her to finish whatever she's saying as he loosens the tie around his neck. "What?!" he snaps. "And yet what?!"
"You can't seem to let me go," the shade finishes. "Check under your pillow."
Cato stares at her for a minute, then does what she asks. There, underneath his pillow, lays Clove's knife. The one she had had in her hand the day she died. He holds the knife in his hand, tightening his fingers around the handle as if mesmerized by it as Clove's hands covers his.
"You have to let me go, Cato. I'm dead. I died saving you because I loved you. That's all you need to remember. But," she continues, "if you still want to keep it, at least put all your happy memories of me in here. Something to remember me by, even if they're not real; even if they're in your dreams about us having a normal life."
Suddenly, Clove wraps her arms around him from behind, resting her head on the crook of his shoulder. He closes his eyes as he slides down to meet the floor, back pressing against the bed. "Think of something that'll make you happy . . ."
_oOo_
(In Cato's mind)
"Are we meeting at the Hob tonight?"
Cato glances at Marvel, who's focusing on his game of World of Warcraft as he speaks.
"Yeah," Cato replies. "After graduation. We're all going, right?"
"Yup," Marvel answers, popping the last syllable as he hits PAUSE on his game. He stands, stretching. "And no apple juice for you. We're getting drunk."
"Uh, no. Remember the last time we got drunk?"
Marvel thinks back. "Oh, yeah. Well, don't look at me. She's your girlfriend."
"Do I want to know why you two are talking about Clove?" a voice asks. The two boys turn to see Rue.
"Nope," Marvel says quickly, shutting off his computer. "How you been, Little Bird?"
"Great! Thresh says he's gonna be a little late. He's having a little fight with -"
"Foxface?"
"Stop calling her that, Marvel! Her name's Finch!" Rue says.
Marvel shrugs. "It's not my fault she looks like a fox. And besides, you can blame Glimmer and those lovely lips of hers. And speaking of Glim, she has a surprise for all of us tonight."
"You got her knocked up, didn't you?" Cato asks.
"If you guys are having that "Talk" - I'm gonna leave," Rue starts, turning towards the door.
Marvel shoots both of his friends an incredulous look. "What? No," he sputters. "Trust me. It ain't that! It's definitely not that! How could you even - No, its something else. You'll just have to see tonight."
"Some friend you are," Cato sneers playfully. "Come on. What's her secret?"
"Whose secret?" Clove's voice pipes up from behind. She goes and gives her boyfriend a kiss.
"Glimmer has a secret," Cato tells her.
"Ooh! What is it? Wait . . . You got her pregnant, didn't you?"
"NO! God, no! It's not - I'm not telling you what it is!"
"Hey guys! What's going on?" Katniss and Peeta ask when they walk in, greeting the others.
"Not you guys too," Marvel complains.
"What's going on?" Peeta cuts in.
"Glimmer has a secret and Marvie here won't tell us," Clove replies to Katniss and Peeta, "but we all know he's gotta crack sooner or later."
Marvel glares at her. "You're evil."
Clove smirks. "Aw, thank you and yes, I know. That's why Cato here loves me."
"Dude," Peeta says. "Just tell us already."
"No!" Marvel cries, exasperated. "Can you guys just mind your own businesses?"
"If we didn't, then we wouldn't be friends," Katniss points out.
"That's it." Marvel ushers them out past his front door, out onto the porch. The door slams shut.
Clove raises her palm and begins to pound on the door. "MARVEL THEODORE ADKINS! YOU OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW OR I'LL TELL GLIMMER THAT YOU SLEEP WITH HER STUFFED HIPPO WHEN SHE'S NOT AROUND!" Behind her, the group tries to suppress their laughs and giggles, including the new arrivals: Thresh and Finch.
"And three," Cato starts.
"Two . . ." Thresh joins in.
"One," Peeta finishes.
Immediately, right on cue, the front door swings open. "You wouldn't," Marvel growls at Clove.
"I would," Clove answers back coolly.
"Dude," Thresh laughs. "You sleep with her stuffed hippo? That's just so . . ."
"Shut up," Marvel retorts. "Fine. If y'all want to know so badly, here it is: Glimmer's the valedictorian for tonight."
Four different pitches ring out in "Holy shit!" and one quiet "Holy crap!"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't tell Glim I told you that. And no mentioning the hippo!"
"But dude," Thresh chortles. "You sleep with her stuffed hippo!"
"You're not gonna let that go, are you?"
"Nope!"
Marvel rolls his eyes, sighing. "Well, if you guys still want to get ready, get your asses in here. We have two hours left."
"Dude, where's the hairspray?!"
"Cato! Where's my hat?"
"Katniss! Can you help me with my hair?"
"WHERE THE HELL ARE MY SHOES?!"
"You've been in that bathroom for ten minutes! Get your ass out now!"
Meanwhile, Rue sits on the couch in Marvel's living room, stroking a mewling Buttercup in her arms as her eyes are focused on the television - watching a re-run of Wolf Rising - in front of her, trying to ignore the loud commotion above her. She glances at the clock and yells, "Ten minutes left!"
More cursing follows, followed by the stampede running down the stairs.
"How long does it take to curl your hair, Clove?!"
"I don't see you complaining, dickhead!"
"Guys, shut the hell up and go get in the frigging car!" Marvel turns to Rue. "Hazelle and Madge will be over soon along with Rye. Please try and not destroy my house, okay, little bird? Be in bed by the time they tell you too. See you later. You got school tomorrow."
Rue watches her friends leave, smiling down at the camera she held in her hands.
"And Panem's Valedictorian for this year's 2014, please give a round of applause for Glimmer Marks!"
Cheers and claps are thunderous throughout the room as Glimmer takes her place in front of the microphone.
"That's my girl!" Marvel hoots.
As it quiets down, Glimmer begins her speech, trying to ignore her brother and sister's glares. "I was going to start this off about how we were all united and if we would work together we could overcome our differences but then I realized that it wouldn't match up to what my point was. So here's my revised one and I'll try an make it short so you won't die from boredom but I have no promises, so suck it up," Glimmer begins. This earns a few chuckles from the audience, although she is unsure what there is to laugh about.
She clears her throat and tries again, placing the index cards she held in her hands back in her pocket and looked out to the audience in front of her, green eyes lingering on her friends, the ones that made her feel at home. Glimmer smiles.
"Everyone has two sides. There's the one that we show the world, and the other being the one that is never meant to be seen. Being in a spoiled household taught me that. My mother and father and brother and sister were all corrupted by the greed that Capitol Companies provided us. They wanted more; more money, more fame, more power, more success. It felt like I was the only one that could see what was changing them. For years, my parents and siblings ignored me because I didn't match up to their expectations. Then, 9th grade came and I dyed my hair blond and dressed in outfits that I really still to this day hate. And then - Boom! You started noticing me again. And for awhile, I was happy. We were a family. And then, we weren't. It still wasn't the same as before. I didn't care about being popular, I didn't care about anything for a while. I faked a smile everyday, telling everyone what they wanted to hear and . . . inside I was screaming. I struggled through the dark void that kept surrounding me like a cold-blooded snake. I'll admit, I tried to kill myself a couple of times, but I could never go through with it. Something in the back of my mind kept telling me "You have to live". But I was getting tired. I didn't understand. I didn't want to understand. And then, everything changed. There's this most handsomest boy sitting in front of me one day at the Hob. He didn't ask if the seat was taken, just sat down like I was the one waiting for him. He takes one look at me and asks me if I was happy. I . . . I just told him the truth. I didn't quite understand why I was telling him everything, a stranger I had just met moments ago. It's possible that it was because strangers can't use our own secrets against us." Glimmer took a deep breath, paused, then started up again.
"But with him, I felt noticed," she continued, glancing at her boyfriend and smiling a genuine smile. "Myself, for the first time in a long time. And I'm grateful for that, even to this day. But I learned the hard way that you can fool yourself into thinking everything will be alright but its not. You may feel like you're going down the drain and feel like there's nothing worth living for. But sometimes all you need is a wake-up call. One day, in a second, a minute, this very instant perhaps, there will be a time when you say, "Hey, I've had enough" or "I can do this." Don't hide who you are and what your passion is. Don't think there's nothing for you. If you have a dream, go for it. If you have something you're passionate about, keep doing it. All of here can do it. Don't let anybody tell you who you can and cannot be. The only person who would be able to do that is yourself. Get a job, go to college, pursue your dreams. Go for it, even if it breaks you down and you hit rock bottom. Get right back up. Fall in love ever once in awhile and meet the greatest people you will ever meet. And along the road, you will have to keep making decisions, whether they're easy or hard; you will have to make a choice. Keep believing in yourself, keep trying and never give up. If I never did, I wouldn't be standing here today. And to my fellow graduating Panems . . ." Glimmer concludes, raising three fingers in the air, "May the odds be ever in your favor."
Marvel gets out of his chair walking to his girlfriend, grabbing her around the waist, dipping her as he places a kiss upon her lips while graduation caps rain down.
Cheers whip throughout the grand room as people laugh and hug each other.
"Here's to us finally graduating Panem High!" Cato announces, raising his glass.
"Here's to us!" Everyone repeats and clink their glasses together. After the graduation ceremony and receiving their diplomas, Cato and the others had headed straight to the Hob. Sipping their drinks, everyone at the table soon becomes quiet.
"This is the last year we're all gonna be together, aren't we? I mean, Katniss's going to Collins University and Peeta's going to take over his parents' bakery, but what happens to the rest of us? Do we stay or do we go on?" Clove asks in a soft voice.
"We'll figure something out," Katniss tries to reassure them. "We always do. But if we do have to separate . . . Don't forget all the good times we had."
"Hey, Cato!" A voice calls out. "Are you gonna sing one last song for us?"
"CATO! CATO! CATO!" The whole Hob is chanting until Cato finally gives in, walking to his regular spot on the stage.
"This is a song I wrote for my girlfriend, Clove. Hope you like it, baby."
"I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you
I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why I need you to hear
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is You
And the reason is you [x3]
I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you
I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you."
Clove has tears in her eyes by the time he finishes. They kiss. "That was beautiful," she says. "I love it. I love you, Cato. And since you wrote me a song, I'll sing one for you too."
"You sing?" Cato asks, surprised.
"You learn something new about me everyday, don't ya?"
He laughs, watching her go onstage.
"This is for Cato, my boyfriend, who's been there since the day I first tried to kill him. So, this is for you."
[Verse 1:]
"Guess this means you're sorry
You're standing at my door
Guess this means you take back
All you said before
Like how much you wanted
Anyone but me
Said you'd never come back
But here you are again
[Chorus:]
'Cause we belong together now, yeah
Forever united here somehow, yeah
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life (my life) would suck (would suck) without you
[Verse 2:]
Maybe I was stupid for telling you goodbye
Maybe I was wrong for trying to pick a fight
I know that I've got issues
But you're pretty messed up too
Either way I found out
I'm nothing without you
[Chorus:]
'Cause we belong together now, yeah
Forever united here somehow, yeah
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life (my life) would suck (would suck) without you
[Bridge:]
Being with you is so dysfunctional
I really shouldn't miss you
But I can't let you go
Oh, yeah
[Chorus:]
'Cause we belong together now, yeah
Forever united here somehow, yeah
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life (my life) would suck (would suck) without you
'Cause we belong together now, yeah
Forever united here somehow, yeah
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life (my life) would suck (would suck) without you."
"Hey, Katniss?" Peeta nudges his girlfriend as Clove returns by Cato's side. "Isn't that Gale? Gale Hawthorne?"
"And isn't that chick, Johanna Mason, Mr. Beetee's daughter?" Marvel asks.
The group turns to see a tall, dark-haired teenage boy with olive skin and grey eyes like Katniss' dancing with a girl with short brown hair out on the dance floor.
"Well, he looks happy with her. Ever since the day I dumped him in the forest, he's been all mopey and brooding. I think that Johanna can take care of herself," Katniss clarifies.
"I'll say. She judo-flipped Finnick Odair from the swimming team from Collins University. And she calls her mom, Nuts. So, basically, Beetee's Volts." Marvel is saying.
"Well, Annie is sorta crazy. She saw her little brother get murdered," Katniss says. "I mean, that would drive someone over the edge if they can't handle that type of trauma."
"Look at you, Doctor Everdeen," Marvel teases before earning several smacks to the back of his head. "Sorry, Katniss."
"No, it's okay. Prim would want me to get over it. It's not my fault that I wasn't there when . . . the hospital blew up. I think that's why I was late that day. Because if I had been on time, I would've died and then Mom and Dad would've lost both of their daughters that day. I guess that's why I was admiring a dandelion on the way there.
There's silence.
Cato clears his throat and in an attempt to try and lighten the mood, he says, "Anybody see the new Maze Runner trailer?"
"Omigod, yes!" Glimmer suddenly shrieks, making everyone jump. "Dylan O'Brien is going to do fantastic as Thomas!"
"I was screaming at my computer "Why the hell would you do that, you idiot?!" I mean, they were closing in on him," Marvel chimes in.
"Well, we already know he made it. I mean, he's the main character, right?" Clove asks.
Thresh and Finch nod.
"Dylan has done an excellent job in his roles so far. Remember in Teen Wolf when he played the Nogitsune? That whole "YOU CAN'T KILL ME!" thing was just epic," replies Katniss.
"It's official! We're seeing it when it comes out!" Peeta declares.
Cato relishes in this moment.
They might never see each other again and it was best to savor this moment when he could with his friends, his family, and his girlfriend at the place where he loved doing the thing he loved most.
_oOo_
(Back in the present)
Cato opens his eyes, seeing the seemly real hallucination of Clove, ready to turn and walk out of the door forever. Getting to his feet, he forms the words he's been longing to say. "I was going to ask you to marry me," Cato blurts out.
Clove turns, then steps closer to him. "And I'm sure I would've gladly said 'Yes,'" she whispers back as she place the ghost of her kiss upon his lips. "I love you."
He watches as she turns into air and explodes in a shower of white light. A sudden knock is heard on his door and the door opens slightly. Rue pokes her head in.
"Cato? They want to know if you're coming back to . . . the funeral," she asks, then sees the destruction across his room.
"Yeah. I'm - Just give me a minute to collect my thoughts." Cato stands up, adjusting his suit and tie.
"All right." Rue turns to leave but then stops herself. She turns to face the tall boy. "We'll be okay, Cato," Rue tells him and hugs him. He embraces her back carefully as his large stature covers her small body. He pulls away.
"You go on ahead. I'll be there in a second. I just have to get something.
Within a few minutes, Cato is back in his spot in front of the microphone. He begins his speech about how they first met, the history they shared together. He described the hatred they both had in the Hunger Games, being angry at Katniss and Peeta for being able to show their love while thus the Careers couldn't. He even recounted the fake life that he had experienced from his time in the coma that he had had; the life that he had wanted with Clove if there had been no Hunger Games or Capitol at all. Finally he closes off with, "I found this video that Clove did a couple of days after I woke up from my coma. It's for Katniss and Peeta."
A large holographic screen appeared in front of everyone and Clove's face appeared. It didn't sting Cato's heart because he hopes that whatever she is, she is at peace. He has let her go.
"Uh. It's on. Okay. I can do this. This is for Katniss and Peeta. Just a little song I wrote for your wedding or . . . whatever. Assuming if Peeta's still not thinking you're a mutt, Catnip, then do whatever you want with this. Anyway, here's the song I wrote for you guys."
"I don't know where I am
I don't know this place
Don't recognize anybody
Just the same old empty face
See these people they lie
And I don't know who to believe anymore
But there comes you to keep me safe from harm
There comes you to take me in your arms
Is it just a game?
I don't know
Is it just a game?
I don't know
Pleading eyes that break my heart
So homesick I can't feel
But I know I must play my part
And tears I must conceal
There comes you to keep me safe from harm
There comes you to take me in your arms
Is it just a game?
I don't know
To keep you safe from my bow
Take my hand and my heart races
Flames illuminate our faces
And we're on fire
Blow a kiss to the crowd
They're our only hope now
And now I know my place
And now I know my place
We're all just pieces in their games."
An hour later after the funeral and more speeches were told while Clove's cremation had taken place and a part of her ashes were carefully placed in the now hollow handle of her knife (which Cato kept with him tucked into his belt), the group gathered into the large room that held dinner for them to eat.
The next thing Cato hears when he's just about to sit down with his tray full of food is: "GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF ME!" Two guards drag in a struggling person in between them and Cato catches sight of blonde hair. The voice -definitely familiar -continues shouting and he realizes that the voice sounds similar to Katniss' but Katniss is already there, rising from her seat, perplexed. Then he comes to the conclusion about the other girl that looked like her, the one from the Capitol, the one who led both Rue and him into a room full of mutts.
"Whoa. Wait. I know her. Let her go," Cato tells the guards. But the guards only stop where they are, right in front of him, hands still tight against the blonde girl's arms.
What is her name? Iris, Cato remembers.
"Iris," he says. Iris snaps her head up and sees him. "Why are you here?"
"She's a prisoner from the Capitol. She's in league with Snow. President Coin has ordered us to take her to the interrogation room for information," one of the guards replies.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm a prisoner, whatever. But there's something you have to know, Cato," Iris says.
"What?" he snaps.
"The bodies. The ones you call Marvel and Clove. They're not cremated. They never were. The ashes that you have, they're not theirs. Someone stole their bodies and took them into the Capitol. Marvel and Clove are in the Capitol, alive."
Cato says, "You led me and Rue into that room full of mutts! Why the hell should I believe what you say?!"
"You shouldn't. But I'm telling the truth this time. You have a traitor in your midst. If you don't believe me, then take my pendant. It's a flash-drive. It'll tell you about the projects that are happening in the Capitol. Take it, Cato."
The whole time he watches her eyes and knows she is telling the truth. He takes the rectangular-shaped pendant from around Iris' neck.
"Why did you tell me this?"
Iris shrugs. "Why not? At least I could do one good thing before I die or whatever." And without another word, Iris is led away.
"Beetee, you know more about technology than I do. Can you download whatever's on there?"
"Wait, hold up. How do you know there's not a virus in there and the Capitol's just wanting to hack into us?" Glimmer asks. "She could be lying to us for all we know."
"I could tell when she was lying. She wasn't lying to us," Cato tells her. "We were trained for that, don't you remember?"
"I remember," Glimmer replies back softly.
"Question: why does she look like me?" Katniss demands. "I know I don't have another sister, unless you're counting Prim. Mom?"
Katniss's mother shakes her head, her hands on Prim's shoulders, both of the Everdeens looking confused also.
There's a sudden loud wail and the group turns to see Finnick's wife, Annie, clutching her ears. "It's okay, Annie," Finnick tries to assure her, his hands gently holding her wrists. "They're not gonna take you again, I promise."
"We need to find out what's in that flash-drive now."
A few minutes later, the group is gathered in Beetee's room, away from the prying eyes of President Coin, watching as he plugs the flash-drive into a device and a holographic screen blips to life in front of them.
Beetee scans the screen. "There only appears to be three ongoing projects in the Capitol right now." He taps the file labeled "PROJECT OMEGA". Inside is what appears to be a list and an summary of an experiment.

"What's the next file?" Cato manages to choke out, voice shaking with anger.
Tapping on the last file which reads "PROJECT ALPHA", an error message box appears on the screen.
"They don't call me a genius for nothing," Beetee says, typing in what appears to be a number of codes and sequences.
The message box then vanishes and the file begins to load. After what seems like a century, words fly across the screen.

I apologize for the very late post. School gets in the way, you know?
It was so freaking tempting to delete Glimmer's whole speech and to just put Shia Labeouf's "JUST DO IT!" speech in here. Be glad I didn't. *winks*
I'm sorry if this story was really, really confusing for those who were reading this. Basically, if you still don't get it, everything that's happening in the modern word (a.k.a. Cato being a singer, etc) is all a figment of Cato's mind from when he was in the coma after the hovercraft went down.
Everything that's happening now (a.k.a. the Projects, etc . . .) is all real.
