Well... hi. After a long time? I'm sorry. I don't have enough free time to write :(. That's also why this chapter is so short and lame. But I hope you enjoy anyway. :) -annie
Chapter 11
I wake up in the morning feeling wonderful, given the circumstances. No nightmares, no waking up at midnight to keep watch, no surprises by the Gamemakers. I jump down from the tree and pack my things. Both girls are already awake and Lizzy is cleaning her knife. Izzy is doing some practice with her chain. The chain is quite deadly, although it may sound funny. It's quite heavy, and with the right swing and force it may knock you out easily. I wish them a good morning and walk over to the stream. I refill my bottle and eat a piece of the squirrel.
Where should we go? Which direction? We want to find Zed, but where is he? There is no point in just wandering around the arena. We have to think of a plan.
"So where are we headed now?" I ask.
"I was thinking maybe the Cornucopia," Izzy answers.
That sounds interesting. But why would Zed return to the golden horn? He has no reason; he's got plenty of food and equipment. Maybe because of shelter and a safe place to sleep? It's the best shot.
"Yeah, he may have looked for shelter and safety there. The Cornucopia is a one-and-a-half day trip from here. At the least. Better start now." I explain.
"Sure. We're ready to go."
On the go, we get to know each other a bit. The twins lived with their dad. They had a small farm in the suburbs of the Capitol. Their mom died a few days after they were born. Their dad blamed them for that. He thought they killed her inside. The girls were pretty much on their own since they were little. Their father became a drunk when they were around six years old. They went to school, came home, checked if their father was home. If he was, they stayed. If he wasn't, they traveled to their farm and cared about the animals. Vanda told them only about how her family died- she didn't want to get too attached to the girls.
After six hours of walking and jogging, they decided to take a brake on a big rock on a meadow. They ate something. Lizzy threw knives into trees. Vanda managed to shoot another squirrel. She packed it and they went on.
The rest of the journey went by slowly. When the night came, they slept in the trees, without a source of water.
A cannon boomed a few hours into the night. Vanda woke up, sat up straight, but when nothing else happened, she lied down again and tried to fall asleep. That was until the footsteps came.
They were coming slowly, as if the person was limping. His feet were shuffling slowly on the bed of leaves. The unknown kid walked past their trees. Vanda heard him fall to the ground a second later.
After that, a new pair of feet ran into her hearing range. The newcomer went to the fallen body, and then another cannon boomed. Vanda heard a sick sound, as if a sword was being driven from the body. A wicked laugh sounded through the forest.
What happened then, Vanda would probably never understand. She heard Lizzy and Izzy leave their trees and jump to the ground. What they said next gave Vanda chills.
"Well well, hello, Zed."
