The Glitch in the Monitor

He was going to lose his mind. By this point, he really wished he would just so he wouldn't understand what the two idiots trailing behind him were complaining about. He took a breath, trying to read through the files on his PADD and actually understand what was being reported.

Someone was touching him.

Screw being mature about this.

"Will you two shut up?"

The two stopped in their tracks as the doctor spun around, flustered by anger and annoyance.

"Leonard-"

"No. I get that you two are worried about Jim and you have tons of important stuff to tell him about anything under the goddamn sun, but visiting hours still apply god dammit, even if you're a commander of a star ship and the guy who developed some fancy theory! Now, I have other patients to attend to which is hard enough without you two imbeciles following me around and hollering in my ear about god knows what!"

By the end of the doctor's frustrated rant, doctors, nurses and people were averting theirs eyes and turning around. Leonard glanced around huffing, red in the face.

"I believe the doctor is right," Spock murmured, placing his hands behind his back. Scotty opened his mouth to object, but the Vulcan gave him a look and the shorter of the two clicked his mouth shut. He didn't look happy about it, but he nodded, grumbling under his breath all the while.

"Of course I am. Let's mark it on the calendar since apparently it happens so infrequently. Now unless it's got to do with the world ending, I don't wanna see either of your faces until tomorrow. Jim needs rest."

"Good night Mr. Kirk."

"Night," he slurred, eyes heavy with the medicine recently given to him. The nurse smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder before lowering the lights. She walked out, her figure becoming blurry to Jim as she went. The door slid shut as did the blonde's eyes.

"Now yee sure there's no way to just talk to the lad for-"

"Scotty, for the billionth time, no. You want him to get better don't you?"

"Whataya take me for? An idiot? 'Course I want him to get better! I just really-"

"Then he needs to sleep god dammit! He gets little enough as it is. Spock ya gotta help me out here- what, what?"

The doctor's confusion was due to the raised eyebrow on the Vulcan's face. Spock held up a finger pointing to the doctor's flashing PADD. Leonard glanced down at it before holding it up with furrowed eyebrows, swiping his fingers across the screen.

The color drained from his face. Spock's lips parted in curiosity and Scotty's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"Jim's flat lining," he said horrifically quiet, swinging around and breaking into a sprint. He began to bark orders at nurses chatting away as he ran. It was like the whole hospital sputtered to life. Spock and Scotty didn't even share a look before they were chasing after the doctor. Now, Scotty was no Vulcan, but boy could he run with the proper amount of adrenaline flooding through his veins. He bumped into quite a few people as well, opposed to Spock who swiftly glided through the workers like he was made of water.

Within a few seconds, the two were directly behind Leonard.

Within another minute, Leonard was barging through the door. The two stopped in the doorway, expecting to see nurses in there, but upon seeing none, Scotty was the first to push by Spock and run in. The Vulcan quickly followed.

"Jim?" Bones called over his shoulder as he ran around the bed. He swiped his fingers over the monitors display screen. His eyebrows furrowed and he flung an arm out beginning to scan the captain over, eyes still on the monitor. There was an eerie low beep in the background as the three frantically focused on their Captain. Spock's hands swept over the blonde's chest, trying to feel the beat of his heart, the rise and fall of simple breaths, anything.

Scotty shook him by the shoulders, shaking his head when Jim remained limp, only moving because of the scots rough manipulation.

"Come on," Leonard hissed, wishing the scanner would work quicker in gathering his vitals. He continued to swipe his fingers over the monitors screen, trying to get something from it, waiting for the scanner in his outstretched hand to beep in completion. More nurses ran in and pulled Scotty away from Jim's body on the bed telling him to leave the room. Spock moved swiftly, his hands no longer trailing over the blonde's blanketed chest to his neck to press his fingers to the warm skin there.

There was a loud gasp and Bones forgot about the scanner momentarily, coming closer to Jim's bedside.

His head jerked around on the pillow until his eyes rested on Spock.

"Wha- what?" he croaked, staring up at the Vulcan's worried face. There was that knot in between his slanted brows, and his jaw was clenched. Jim glanced to the side to see an approaching Scotty, tugging out of the nurse's grips.

"I- I don't- I think you're monitor broke," Leonard said, a bit out of breath. He continued to check the scanner. "It said your pulse plummeted. You're vitals are fine though," he trailed off.

Spock lifted his fingers from the blonde's neck and straightened, placing his hands at his sides. If they were shaking a little bit, no one noticed. His heart was hammering in his side, and his mouth felt too dry. It bothered him how easily his emotions have been getting the better of him recently. Especially when it involved his Captain.

"Sorry," he said, eyes wide and glossy from the medicine induced sleep.

"Shut up, it's not your fault," Bones snapped, as he gathered the vitals from the scanner in his hand. He was shaking his head all of the while and muttering curses under his breath.

"You shut up," Jim grumbled, eyes closing momentarily. It was a bit delayed but the doctor looked up, exasperation set in his features. Jim could be such a kid sometimes. It always is a little strange having a younger person as your captain/boss/commander.

"He's fine," Leonard growled. He told the three nurses in the room to go either get a new monitor, or find someone to fix the current one.

"I can fi-"

"No you cannot," Leonard snapped cutting Scotty off, "Both you and Spock are leaving. Right now."

"Why?" Jim asked tiredly, "I'm awake now."

"I'm about to drug you up to yer gills, so no."

"Drugs aren't the answer Bones," Jim purred, shifting slowly under the bed sheets.

When Scotty began to laugh (very relieved) he received a very murderous glare from the doctor. He said his goodbyes and quickly fled. Jim watched with a smile on his lips, he glanced at Spock and his face switched to one filled with a bit of curiosity.

"l don't need drugs Bones," Jim slurred, deciding that Spock's touch-telepathy was a thought for another day, "I'm gonna pass out."

"Alright," Leonard sighed, "We're leaving now. Whoever comes in to fix this hunk of junk will be quiet. Promise."

"Okay," Jim yawned, "Night, night Spock."

Whatever happened next was beyond Jim, because he was out like a light.

"You think elephants have good hearing?"

"Pardon?" Uhura asked confusedly. How did their discussion about last night turn to something so odd?

It was about 1 o'clock, and Nyota stopped by to visit again. He had a feeling she was trying to take her mind off of some things. Her hair was pulled back into a long braid, and she had on a sweater over her uniform. She had no doubt been teaching before she came by. Jim wasn't sure if she was wearing makeup, but if she was, it must have been very little. Her eyes looked a little read though, and she looked tired.

"They have really big ears. They've got have good hearing, right?" he asked. He pushed at the food on his tray with a fork and made a face. Every meal he had gotten so far was mushy, soggy, or bland. He placed the fork down with a clink and picked a grape, popping it in his mouth. He looked back at her. She had been watching him the entire time.

Uhura raised an eyebrow (much to Jim's jealousy since he still couldn't really do that) and a smile stretched across her face.

"Are you on medication right now?"

"Rude," Jim huffed. He flicked a grape at her. Well in her general direction. It hit the floor somewhere, never once even hitting Nyota. Though he was genuinely curious as to if Elephants had good hearing, he was really trying to get a laugh out of her.

She looked like she needed it.

"What?"

"What?" Jim said, pulled from his thoughts.

"You're staring at me with that stare of yours."

"How poetic."

"You jerk," she huffed, "That stare you get when you're trying to figure someone or something out. Or when you're developing a devious plan."

"Man, you're just all forms of communication, aren't you?" Jim snorted, though it didn't really have the usual attitude. "You're upset."

She looked surprised for a moment before shaking her head and sitting up slightly. She uncrossed her legs and placed her hands in her lap.

"I'm alright, Sir."

"Now don't offend me with titles, Ms. Uhura," he huffed, "Is it about Spock?"

"Sort of," she sighed, playing with the hem of her dress. It was rare to see her so uncomfortable, and Jim didn't like that he put her in the position. "It's going to sound cliché, but it's difficult."

"Anything with Spock is difficult."

That got a laugh out of her and Jim smiled, his teeth showing and the faint wrinkles around his eyes tightening.

"True," she chuckled, "I have to get going though. Got another class and I still need to actually eat lunch. Don't break your monitor again, I don't think Leonard's heart can take it."

"Hey that so had nothing to do with me. Have fun teaching people who think they know everything," Jim snorted.

She rolled her eyes and bent down to kiss his head, just as the nurse walked in.

Authors Notes: I GOT A NEW LAPTOP! And it's beautiful, much like Chris Pine's butt (but not as beautiful).

But yeah! I'm not quite sure who asked me to expand on this, or if they really asked or if it was kind of just like a suggestion, but I wrote it anyways. I got another request recently, and it's really interesting. It either involves detectives and thieves or an oblivious cadet and a trying professor. Who knows!? I sure as hell don't know yet!

So stay tuned!

Also, hope you all had a lovely holiday, whether it was Thanksgiving or Hanukah!

Thanks so much for the feedback and putting up with my varied updates! Sorry this one was on the shorter side. I got stitches in my hand and it bothers them to type. Don't be carving candles at 11 at night people, you will have unhappy parents and ruined drawings due to blood.
