The silence in the room was heavy and uncomfortable for Sting. He was surprised that they could even hold out for so long, especially Natsu. Fairy Tail was notorious for being a very troublesome guild and their seemingly unending source of energy, fighting and having fun. Sabertooth wasn't like that. It was kill or be killed; therefore, they didn't have the heart in them to talk to anyone else other than their partners and such.

Sting wasn't a very understanding man. When he found out about Rogue's feelings for Lucy, he snapped and was pissed beyond words. His partner didn't make up any excuses and listened to his harsh words, not once wincing or flinching at how hard he was. He simply stood there, his posture calm and his eyes closed. When Sting was finished, Rogue spoke up and replied with four words.

"You will understand someday."

And he left the blonde breathless from screaming out his fury.

He avoided the shadow mage the next couple days, wanting him to regret his decisions. He wanted to see him suffer. But after a week of his childish game, he found out that Rogue didn't care. He had Lucy and didn't need him anymore. He got angry again and this time lashed out onto the celestial mage, his words driving knives in Lucy's heart. Nevertheless, she stood proud and strong just like Rogue, patiently waiting for him to finish pouring out his rage.

He had said numerous spiteful words, such as calling her a whore, an eyesore, a nuisance and all the other harsh words that existed. He knew that a simple apology would never suffice like what his partner said, but he did his best to make it up to her when they became friends. That's when he realized the true meaning of friendship. That's when he started to understand Rogue's words.

The Sting from back then and the person he was now were different—he knew that much. He was somewhat grateful for that and at the same time, shameful. But he thanked Lucy nonetheless for helping him change for the better good. She was such a kind-hearted girl; she didn't deserve losing memories of the person she loved most.

She had to remember him or else the couple would fall.

Minutes had gone by and the white Exceed still hadn't arrived. Sting saw that they started to preoccupy themselves by chatting or playing cards. Wendy was talking to Happy while Team Natsu and Jellal were playing poker. As for him, he remained where he sat, watching them interact with each other. Sabertooth mages didn't entertain themselves like what they were doing. If they were bored, they would train and nothing more.

He realized how boring his guild was all of a sudden. He was never one to enjoy games but he wasn't exactly a grown up to be serious for life either.

"Hey Sting," Gray called out, grinning crookedly. "Wanna join?"

The blonde looked away. "I don't play poker."

The four of them blinked and Natsu burst out laughing. "I bet what you really want to say is that you don't know how to play poker."

Erza smirked. "I see."

"S-Shut up," Sting mumbled, glaring at them. "It's not my fault that we don't like wasting precious time. Our master told us that if we were bored, we were to engage in training, not play games."

"How boring," Jellal commented, smiling wryly. "Well, you can watch if you want to."

Sting shook his head. "Nah, thanks but I'm fine."

"Suit yourself," they chorused and the blonde felt a vein pop on his forehead.

He leaned back and hit the bed behind him. He relaxed and sighed softly, eyes dropping close. He wondered where his best friend was. He had no idea where the shadow mage was at the moment for he was always guarded and always kept to himself. Sting knew nothing about his past and likewise, Rogue knew nothing about his. It was only fair, but sometimes he wished the guy would just disclose it.

He didn't know whether or not Rogue opened up to Lucy. Before Lucy lost her memories, the two were inseparable. They'd eat meals together, go on missions (there were times he was with them, and there were times when he was not), they'd go shopping with each other—heck, he was sure they even showered together. This stunned him at first since he knew that Rogue was a man of privacy and solitude. He couldn't even envision him being intimate with someone. Still, he pushed himself to the boundaries all for a woman.

All for Lucy Heartfilia who now knew nothing about her married life with Rogue.

"Would they ever be united again?" Sting thought solemnly. It seemed like a distant dream now to see them laughing and holding hands again. It appeared like it was long in the past, left to be forgotten.

Sting tried hard to assess the situation when the tragedy happened. He thought he would be happy, because even after he befriended Lucy, he still felt that spike of fury inside of him. But he was surprised to find himself full of sorrow—it wasn't like him to feel sad. The only time he did was when he thought Lector died and that seemed like a nightmare to him now.

Pushing aside the bad memories, he opened his eyes and saw that the fairies were now playing something else. Wendy and Happy were talking about Carla and he was just reminiscing the past—how fun.

He huffed and stretched his arms. "Your little exceed is taking her sweet time, huh?" he said and turned to the bluenette who blushed.

"S-She'll be back soon," she said and stared at the window. "Hopefully," she added.

Sting smirked. "Alright then."

A few minutes later, just like she said, Carla flew in the room from the window, exhausted and panicked. Her wings vanished and she landed in Wendy's arms who patted the cat's head gently.

The white dragon slayer frowned. "So, what job did she take?"

"I-It appears like she took one in a rural town in the east of Fiore. The job said to exterminate a dark guild who took control of the town she went to. We don't know the name of the guild or anything, but they described the leader," Carla said, pausing to catch her breath.

Erza set aside her cards and appeared next to the bluenette, her lips tugged down. "What does he look like?" She asked.

The white exceed swallowed thickly. "It was said on the job request that he has black and white hair, red piercing eyes and wears makeup."

Gray and Natsu's eyes widened as they rushed to Carla. The ice mage spoke first. "Are you sure?"

"Y-Yes, I'm not mistaken," she said and Wendy's face paled.

"But that's impossible! They're supposed to be in jail," Jellal said, his voice shaking. The redhead rubbed soothing circles on his back and the bluenette shook his head, disbelief portrayed on his face.

Sting furrowed his eyebrows. "Why? Who is this guy?"

Natsu stared at him with angry eyes. "I don't wanna say the bastard's name. If it is them, why would they do that to Lucy?"

"M-Maybe it isn't them," Wendy squeaked, flushing and looking down. "Lucy didn't do anything to them anyway."

Gray stared at the floor, deep in thought. He heard his teammates bickering around him and after a few more minutes of thinking, his eyes widened and he slammed his hand on the floor to catch their attention. They stared at him in question and he frowned. "Perhaps she didn't do anything to them as a group, but maybe one of them has a grudge against her."

"That's ridiculous," Jellal said.

Erza shook her head. "It's possible," she eyed Gray. "But who would that be?"

The ice mage dragged a weary hand down his face. "That, I don't know."

"Damn it."

Sting cleared his throat. "But we've got a lead, right?"

The redhead nodded, her eyes blazing with ire. "Yes, we have a lead. But we still need you to remember the woman you claim to be head over heels for Rogue. It could be her or the dark guild. We have two suspects, the other one's identification is still unknown but we are positive about the dark guild Lucy was supposed to eradicate."

"It could really be them," Jellal said, cursing. "I should've killed them."

"Jellal-san, it's alright," Wendy comforted and Erza agreed.

"No need to blame yourself."

The bluenette sighed. "I guess you're right."

While they continued speaking, Sting was thinking very hard about who was the girl that loved Rogue. He growled and clutched his head, picking up bits of conversations and memories from his guild. Images of women's faces flashed through and he struggled to recall the face and name.

Who was it?

A familiar woman's face appeared in his mind and he gasped, his eyes widening. He swallowed thickly and faced the mages of Fairy Tail who stared at him with a puzzled look.

"I think I know who it is now," he said. "But I don't think it would be of any help."

Natsu frowned. "Why?"

Sting inhaled sharply and released it, shutting his eyes close.

"She's dead."

Rogue's eyes fluttered open and the first thing he saw was the pale orange sky. He realized that the sun was setting and that they were out on the hill for hours already. He sat upright and saw Lucy curled up next to him, fast asleep. He sighed and treaded his fingers through his hair, gently patting the blonde's shoulder.

"Lucy, wake up," he whispered. She made no move and remained sleeping, her lips parted as if inviting him to—

He shook his head and bit back a growl, closing his eyes. He regained proper composure and made another attempt to wake the woman.

"Lucy," he mumbled in her ear. "It's time to head home."

The blonde groaned. "Five more minutes…"

Rogue sighed and tucked his arms under her knees and her back. He lifted her and leaned her head against his chest. A memory arose from their situation and he smiled sadly before descending down the hill. While he was walking, Lucy stirred, but she remained sleeping.

History repeats itself, eh, he thought, smiling amusedly. There was one time where they took a nap on the hill and woke up during sunset as well. Lucy refused to wake up or be bothered so he carried her back home.

Déjà vu.

Rogue suppressed incoming tears and shifted the blonde in his arms. She was gripping his shirt and was mumbling about spirits and children (he was certain that his face was a deep red hue when he heard her). She seemed so peaceful then. She looked exactly like the woman he married and loved. He was still hoping she'd go back to normal. He was still wishing for her memories to return. The wait was infuriating but patience was virtue and he knew better than to act carelessly.

He could see the roof of their house and shifted the woman in his arms. He noticed her face scrunched up in pain and he frowned, knowing then that she was going through a nightmare. A vague memory of Lucy screaming in the dead of night made itself known in his mind. He found her crying and calling out his name over and over like a broken record. He knew the faces she made whenever she was going through bad dreams—it was rather disturbing.

With a heavy exhale, he unlocked the front door and began walking up the stairs. The blonde's face was relaxing now, and her lips were twitching into a small smile. The man smiled in amusement and entered her room, gently laying her down on the bed. He covered her body with a blanket and brushed her tears away.

"Rogue…"

His hand froze in midair, before he dropped it to his side. He leaned closed and planted a kiss on the crown of her head. "I love you," He whispered, his voice filled with so much sorrow and pain, yet so full of love and adoration.

Making sure that she was in fact rid of her nightmares, he leaned against the doorframe and watched her reactions. When she remained sleeping with a serene look on her face, he finally left the room and shut the door close.
