Word Number Eleven: Harmonize

With boards that creaked, weak beams coming from the ceiling, and dust so thick you could feel it in your blood, it was obvious that April hadn't been up to her attic in awhile. This was the home she had been raised in, the home where her and Mr. O'Neil lived before his kidnapping, and before the teenage girl was forced to move in with her aunt. Even though some people might've disliked the calm atmosphere that the attic held, Donatello loved it and made sure to take everything in. April O'Neil opened the small door on the floor and stepped up, Donnie soon after, as wind chimes rang out gently from somewhere else in the room.

"It's hot up here." April said as she rubbed her bare arms. In the dead middle of summer, nothing was very cold anymore. The blue eyed beauty wore shorts, a yellow tank top, and slip on sandals with her hair pulled back like it usually was.

"I like it!" The mutant turtle replied with a gap toothed smile.

"Okay, so basically we're looking for my dad's old telescope. It's kinda essential if we all want to go stargazing later on. I don't want to use one of your techno gadgets because I don't want it getting ruined up here." April explained as she began to walk around.

"Leo's getting the blankets, Raph and Mikey are packing the food, and we're getting the telescope. Seems fair enough." Don responded.

"Yup! Now let's start looking around."

As soon as this was said, the auburn haired girl had already disappeared to another part of the attic. Donatello looked around and began to rummage through some old boxes where he found many interesting things. Old Christmas decorations, April's schoolwork from when she was in elementary classes, and children's books covered with a thick layer of dust.

"Beauty and the Beast..." Don smiled as he lifted up the picture book with the popular Disney characters on it.

"Whatch'a looking at, Donnie?" April called from somewhere in the chamber.

"Old books. I'm sorry, I'll get back to work. This place is just like a treasure trove!" He responded in awe, setting the book back into it's box and sealing it shut.

The turtle stood and made his way around some more, deciding to look around with April so that he wouldn't get sucked in and zone out with any other interesting objects around the attic. Sunlight poured in through every nook and cranny as the two began to go through boxes together.

"This is some old stuff that my dad labeled 'work' so the telescope may be here." April announced as she lifted the top of the box.

Inside were many items that didn't look exactly as scientific as he had expected. There was a microphone, a notepad that had paper ripping out of the rungs at the top, an entire collection of pens, some old newspaper articles, and a couple used cameras. April stared distantly at the items as she rummaged through them, finally picking up the notepad but slamming it shut as soon as her eyes hit the writing.

"What's wrong?..." Donnie asked.

"Nothing." The girl responded quickly as she tossed the notes back in and kicked the box underneath a shelf. "Just some old junk."

"So we keep looking?"

"Yup! We keep looking!"

April hastily pulled Donatello up and led him over to another shelf. On top, there was a large green bin that she couldn't possibly reach. The mutant stood up on the tips of his three toes and snatched the item in question, bringing it down for a delighted April who quickly tore it open. DVDs and older tapes filled the bin to it's brim and the pair instantly began to go through it.

"Wow." Don chuckled.

"What?" April asked.

"You have your first grade school play taped?"

April's cheeks turned red and she grabbed the tape.

"That's embarrassing, Donnie!" She scolded as he nearly rolled over laughing. "How would you feel if Mikey showed me a tape of you in the bathtub as a baby!?"

"What?!" Donnie cried, sitting up. "Your bluffing, right?!"

"Mayyyybeee." A smirk crossed the girls face.

"I'm gonna kill him." The scientist declared. "But still, can we please watch one of these tapes? How about your fifth grade graduation?"

"That's also embarrassing. I'm not watching anything from when I had glasses and braces." April said dismissively.

"You had glasses and braces?" Don inquired happily.

"Great, now I've said way too much."

"Well apparently you saw the three year old me naked in a bathtub, I think I can see you in braces and glasses." Donnie teased as he slipped the DVD into a nearby DVD player connected to an old TV that he could easily rewire into a nearby outlet.

"No! Donnie stop, I look ugly!" The teenage girl pleaded as she tried to get the tape back.

"April O'Neil looks ugly?!" The mutant said with mock surprise. "Now that's a first!"

The two wrestled around, April trying to make it near impossible for Donnie to get the TV to work, but in the end it appeared that all her efforts were in vain as the DVD began to spin and the screen flashed blue. Donatello jumped into place in front of it, legs crossed, a big smile on his face, as his crush attempted to turn his mask so that it covered his chocolatey eyes. Once again, nothing worked for poor April and she was stuck sitting next to a teenage mutant ninja turtle watching her embarrassing fifth grade graduation. A quaint little auditorium appeared and two voices could be heard as whoever was taking the video tried to get the camera in focus. Once the camera's gaze was settled, a woman walked onto the stage and started to talk about everything the fifth graders had achieved.

"That was Ms. Kerps." April explained, Donnie listening intently. "She was such a sycophant to the parents, but was so mean to the kids. Well, except Arnold Arkleburger."

"Arkleburger?! Is that a name or a disease?!" Don laughed.

"I know, but he was still her favorite!" The blue eyed beauty chuckled.

During the ceremony, the kids got little certificates, a handshake with their teacher, and a picture with the principle holding their certificate. First up from April's class came a small boy in suspenders with curly blond hair and two teeth that stuck slightly out of his mouth. It could've only been Arnold Arkleburger, you could tell by his proud handshake with Ms. Kerps. Some kids April could comment on, others she didn't remember, but there was a select few she could write a novel about, especially a girl named Katherine.

"She was a spoiled little brat who won every single art competition, picked all the recess games, erased the board every day, and always kept her desk neat and tidy. In the beginning of first grade, I tried to be her friend, but she told me that she didn't like ugly people. Just look at her!" April explained, pointing at Katherine who had sauntered out onto the stage in a frilly pink princess style dress.

"The name Katherine sounds familiar, and she looks familiar now that I really take a closer look at her." Don leaned closer to the TV screen.

"Your right. I still haven't lost queen bee Katherine McCoy, she was the one I beat out for Class President and Belle." The auburn haired girl smiled.

"Look! Look! Our little April is next!" A male voice said on the TV.

April let out a deep sigh as she skipped onto the stage. A mouth full of metal, large pink Hello Kitty glasses, and a blue dress with Mary Jane shoes that clacked loudly whenever she stepped. She had always hated those glasses and those shoes and that dress. She hated everything about that outfit and everything about that video.

"You can laugh now." She said bluntly to her friend.

"Why? You look adorable, April." Donnie said, but it wasn't in a teasing way. It was 100% sincere.

He actually thought this little nerd on stage was cute.

"You really think so?" April asked.

"I really do! That little dress is so cute!" He laughed.

Suddenly the camera cut to another scene, capturing the attention of the two who were watching it. Little April bounded over to the camera cheering how she had made it and how she got a special certificate. It made Donatello smile as she jumped around happily, until she hopped into the outstretched arms of a laughing woman. The woman was beautiful with her light red hair that almost looked blond, her neatly buttoned yellow top with soft gray bottoms, mesmerizing blue eyes, and the warmest smile he'd ever seen.

"Mommy!" The little girl on the screen squealed.

Beside him, Donatello felt something tense up. He looked over to see the now teenage April O'Neil staring intensely at the screen, eyes unblinking, lips slightly parted, and a single tear slipping down her cheek. Immediately the turtle regretted practically forcing April to watch this video.

"April...is that...?" He stuttered.

"My mother." She said with almost no emotion. "My mother, Mae O'Neil."

"I'm so sorry...I didn't mean for-"

"I know, Donnie." The girl cut him off. Instead of saying any other words, she buried her face into the turtle's plastron for comfort, wrapping her arms around him as he did the same to her.

"It's okay...ssshh..." Don cooed lightly as April's sobs picked up. Her crying made it feel like someone was stabbing him and twisting the blade around and around very slowly, he cared about her so much.

"I-I miss...her..." April managed to say through her tears.

"I know you do, but she's always with you, April. She's always watching over you and you know what?" The boy made April look into his chocolatey brown eyes that were also glazed over with tears. "I bet she's so proud. She's so proud of the beautiful and strong girl you've turned into, April."

April smiled as the tears ran down her face, looking Donnie in the eyes and kissing his cheek gently. He didn't faint or giggle in surprise, he looked at her compassionately and told her to stay there. The turtle stood up and walked over to the box labeled 'work'. On the notepad's second page, the notes written by Mae O'Neil told the location of the telescope. The third shelf to the back, second row, and as soon as Donnie laid eyes on the device, he allowed a single tear to slip out.

"I found it..." He whispered lightly to April who looked up, wiping her eyes.

"Donnie..."

"You can always come to me, April." Don said as he set the telescope in her hands.

"I know."
