Witch Tales - a Sofia the First fanfic

Chapter 11: Family

Note: this story starts when Lucinda is fifteen.

A day before Mother's Day

It was a sunny May morning at Enchancia Castle. In Sofia's bedroom, a fifteen-year-old Sofia was working on a Mother's Day gift when she heard a knock at the door.

"Come in" Sofia invited.

Sofia's bedroom door opened, and in walked a fifteen-year-old Lucinda.

"That looks nice" Lucinda smiled as she noticed the Mother's Day gift that Sofia was working on.

"It a bouquet of mixed flowers" Sofia smiled back. "I wanted to give Mom something nice for Mother's Day".

"Speaking of Mother's Day, well, I wanted to talk to you about that" Lucinda said.

"What is it, Lucinda?" Sofia asked, sensing that Lucinda had something on her mind.

"Well, this is the first Mother's Day I've experienced here at the castle" Lucinda started. "I'd like to do something special as well, but I don't want to get in the way of you and your Mom. I know how important Mother's Day is to you".

"Lucinda" Sofia smiled as she hugged Lucinda, "she's your mother as well, now".

"I just didn't want to step on your toes as it were" Lucinda commented.

"You wouldn't be stepping on anybody's toes" Sofia reassured Lucinda. "Amber, James, and I each give Mom something special on Mother's Day. Now you can be involved in our special day, too".

"Thank you, Sofia" Lucinda smiled in gratitude.

"Your welcome, Lucinda" Sofia smiled back. "What did you have in mind for a gift?".

Lucinda whispered in Sofia's ear, as Sofia smiled.

"Mom will love that" Sofia beamed.

Mother's Day

It was now Mother's Day. In a sitting room in Enchancia Castle, Sofia, Amber, James, and Lucinda were ready to present Mother's Day gifts to their mother, Queen Miranda.

Sofia gave Miranda the bouquet of mixed flowers, and a card. A sixteen-year-old Amber gave Miranda a bouquet of yellow flowers, and a card. And a sixteen-year-old James gave Miranda a bouquet of white and blue flowers, and a card.

"These are lovely" Miranda smiled as she smelled the flowers and read the cards. "Thank you".

"Your welcome" Sofia, Amber, and James smiled.

"Lucinda has something for you, Mom" Sofia announced.

Lucinda walked up, and handed Miranda a bouquet of pink roses, and a card.

Miranda smelled the roses, then read Lucinda's card:

My dearest Mom:

I want to thank you very much for being there for me, and for welcoming me into this wonderful family. I am proud to have you as a mother, and I will love you always.

With love, your daughter, Lucinda.

Miranda smiled reading Lucinda's card, as Sofia, Amber, and James stood around Lucinda.

"You've made Mom very happy, Lucinda" Amber smiled.

"Thank you, Lucinda" Miranda smiled. "I'll treasure this forever". Miranda then put her arms around her four children. "I am so blessed to have four wonderful children".

Sofia, Amber, James, and Lucinda smiled.

"We have another surprise for you, Mom" Sofia beamed.

"What?" Miranda asked.

"We're going to have a Mother's Day picnic at Enchancia Falls" James announced.

"It's going to be a great time" Amber smiled.

"That sounds wonderful" Miranda smiled back.

On the way to the picnic

Miranda, Sofia, Amber, James, and Lucinda were aboard a flying carriage on their way to Enchancia Falls.

"Your going to love Enchancia Falls" Sofia smiled as she held Miranda's hand.

As the flying carriage flew toward Enchancia Falls, Lucinda looked over the side of the carriage, and noticed something below - a witch flying on a broom. Lucinda didn't recognize the witch. As the witch flew below, Lucinda got an uneasy feeling.

"Please don't let it be a witch out for some Mother's Day hexing" Lucinda thought to herself. "I want this day to be perfect".

Lucinda watched the witch for a few moments, and was then relieved when the witch flew off in a different direction.

"What has your attention?" Miranda asked Lucinda.

"Oh, nothing" Lucinda answered. "Just admiring the view".

"There's nothing like a flying carriage ride" Miranda smiled.

At Enchancia Falls

In a little while, the flying carriage landed at the bottom of Enchancia Falls. At the bottom of the falls, there was a grassy area which sat next to a lovely stream. As everybody got off of the carriage, Baileywick and the carriage driver started setting up the picnic blanket.

As the picnic blanket, and the food, were being laid out, everybody enjoyed looking at Enchancia Falls - a single, high waterfall. At one point, Lucinda sensed something, and started walking toward some trees in the distance. As Lucinda got close to the trees, she saw a woman standing there. It was the witch that Lucinda had seen earlier.

"May I help you?" Lucinda asked as she approached the witch.

"Oh, I'm sorry" the witch started. "I didn't mean to intrude. I saw all of you in the distance, and it reminded me of when I spent Mother's Day with my daughter. I'm Marcella Greythorn - a good witch".

"I'm a good witch as well" Lucinda smiled. "I'm Princess Lucinda of Enchancia. I'm still getting use to the Princess part".

"You weren't born a Princess?" Marcella asked.

"No" Lucinda answered. "Last summer, a mysterious illness swept through Enchancia, killing a number of people - including my birth parents. Shortly afterward, I became part of the royal family when King Roland and Queen Miranda adopted me".

"I lost my eleven-year-old daughter when that illness struck" Marcella sadly said. "I have nobody now".

"I'm so sorry" Lucinda said in a sad voice.

At that point, Miranda, Sofia, Amber, and James walked up.

"I can't think of nothing more devastating than to loose a child" Miranda sadly commented.

"Most kind, my Queen" Marcella said. "I should be going. I don't want to spoil your day".

"Please, stay" Miranda offered. "There's plenty for everybody, and we'd love to have you".

"Please, join us" Amber smiled.

"We'd really like to have you" Sofia smiled.

"Then I accept your gracious invitation" Marcella said. "Thank you".

"Your very welcome" Miranda smiled.

Everybody walked over to where the picnic had been set up, and sat down. As everybody enjoyed a fine picnic meal, a conversation took place.

"So, Mrs. Greythorn, what do you do for a living?" Sofia asked.

"My husband died a few years ago" Marcella started. "He left me a shop catering to witches, warlocks, sorcerers, and sorceresses. It does okay business, but I have been looking for a better location".

"Have you thought about Dunwitty?" Lucinda suggested. "The Dunwitty area is becoming home to a small but growing witch and warlock community. Also, Royal Prep is nearby, and the school has been looking for a local supplier for it's magical curriculum".

"That definitely sounds promising" Marcella pondered. "Are there any shops available for sale there?".

"As a matter of fact, there are a few empty shops in Dunwitty" Miranda said. "I would be more than happy to make inquiries, and pass the information on to you".

"I would appreciate that, Queen Miranda" Marcella smiled. "Thank you".

A few months later

It was a bright, sunny day in the middle of August. In Dunwitty, Marcella had purchased an empty shop, and had turned it into a shop catering to witches, warlocks, sorcerers, and sorceresses. It was now the grand opening for Marcella's shop in Dunwitty. As Marcella opened the shop for the day, she busied herself stocking some last minute merchandise.

As Marcella finished, she heard the shop door open. Marcella looked up to see Miss Flora, Miss Fauna, and Miss Merryweather.

"Welcome, ladies" Marcella smiled. "What may I help you with?".

"I'm Miss Flora" Flora started. "And this is Miss Fauna, and Miss Merryweather. We're the head mistresses of Royal Prep. In addition to royal studies, Royal Prep also offers a magical curriculum. We're interested in knowing what kind of magical supplies you carry".

"I carry a wide variety of magical supplies" Marcella answered. "I carry books, brooms, cauldrons, clothing, crystal balls, potion ingredients, Quidditch supplies, tarot cards, wands, and assorted magical equipment".

Miss Flora then brought out a list, and handed it to Marcella. "Would you be able to acquire everything on this list?" Flora asked.

Marcella looked over the list. "I have most of this in stock right now" Marcella answered. "As for the other items on your list, I have a variety of suppliers, and I can obtain the items quite easily".

"Well then" Flora smiled, "we would like to do business with you. The new school year will be starting up soon, and we'll need the items on the list as soon as possible".

"As I said, I have most of the items in stock right now" Marcella smiled. "As for the other items on your list, I can have them within four days".

"Wonderful" Miss Fauna beamed.

"That's excellent" Miss Merryweather smiled.

"It is going to be a pleasure doing business with you" Miss Flora smiled at Marcella. "In fact, I'd like to name you the official magical supplier for Royal Prep".

"I'm honored" Marcella gasped in happiness. "Thank you".

"Thank you" Miss Flora smiled. "We've been looking for a magical supplier that is located close to Royal Prep. Your shop fits the bill nicely".

The move to Dunwitty was quite profitable for Marcella. Not only was her shop, Greythorn's, now the official magical supplier to Royal Prep, but witches and warlocks who lived in the Dunwitty area also did a steady stream of business with her.

A surprise

It was now late September. In Greythorn's, Marcella was preparing for another business day when a woman walked into the shop.

"How may I help you today?" Marcella smiled at the woman.

"Are you Mrs. Greythorn?" the woman asked.

"Yes" Marcella answered.

"I am Mrs. Prosser, and I'm from the local orphanage" the woman introduced herself. "There is something I would like to discuss with you".

"Go ahead" Marcella said to Mrs. Prosser.

"Very recently, the local orphanage obtained a new charge - a young ten-year-old witch" Mrs. Prosser started. "Her name is Lynn. Up to recently, her only family was her father, who died a week ago from a terminal illness. She's really quite a sweet girl, and has been trained in the ways of white, or good, magic".

"What are you asking of me?" Marcella asked.

"Naturally, we like to adopt out a new charge to a home where his or her needs can be sufficiently met" Mrs. Prosser answered. "Since you are a white witch, and a successful businesswoman, we were wondering if you might be interested in meeting Lynn, and maybe at some point adopting her?".

Marcella thought about it for a few moments. Lynn was now alone in the world. Marcella knew what it was like to be alone, and it was a sad feeling - a feeling she would not wish on anybody. Perhaps this could be a second chance, not only for Lynn, but for Marcella as well.

"What would be involved?" Marcella asked Mrs. Prosser.

"Lynn would spend a few days with you so you and her could get to know each other" Mrs. Prosser answered. "If the two of you hit it off, then we could move forward to adoption".

"I would like to get to know Lynn" Marcella said. "When would be a good time to start?".

"I can bring Lynn over this afternoon" Mrs. Prosser smiled.

"I'll see you and Lynn this afternoon" Marcella smiled back.

Getting to know Lynn

The afternoon came, and Mrs. Prosser arrived with Lynn.

"Lynn" Mrs. Prosser started, "this is Mrs. Greythorn".

"It's nice to meet you, ma'am" Lynn said to Marcella.

"It's nice to meet you, Lynn" Marcella smiled.

"I'll see the two of you in a few days" Mrs. Prosser said as she left.

"I'll just close up shop for the day, then we'll go upstairs" Marcella said to Lynn.

Marcella then closed up the shop, and walked Lynn upstairs to the front room where the two sat down on a couch. Lynn sat there looking so sad. Marcella's heart went out to Lynn.

"You must be so sad" Marcella gently said as she put her hand on Lynn's shoulder.

"Yes" Lynn sadly said. "I miss my father terribly".

Marcella held out her arms. "Come here" Marcella gently said to Lynn.

Lynn went into Marcella's arms, and cried like she had never had before.

"Just let it all out" Marcella gently said as Lynn cried, and cried, and cried. After a while, Lynn had cried herself out. "It's going to be alright" Marcella reassured Lynn. "It may not seem so right now, but everything will work out. You'll be okay, my little witchlet".

Lynn smiled. "My father called me that, too - his little witchlet" Lynn remarked.

"I'm so happy I brought a smile to your face" Marcella smiled. "And what a lovely smile it is, too. You hang on to the good times. Those are the memories that will help you through this".

"Thank you for your kindness" Lynn said to Marcella.

"Your very welcome" Marcella said with a smile. "Let's get some supper".

Marcella and Lynn walked into the kitchen. Marcella then brought out some ingredients to make beef stew.

"As a witch, I could just pop something up" Marcella started. "But there is a pleasure in making something yourself".

"My father was the same way" Lynn smiled. "He loved to cook. I love to cook, too".

"Want to help?" Marcella asked.

"I'd love that" Lynn smiled.

Marcella and Lynn worked together to prepare the ingredients, and to cook up the beef stew. When the stew was finished, Marcella and Lynn ate supper, and got to know each other. Afterward, Marcella took Lynn to one of two bedrooms.

"This will be your bedroom, Lynn" Marcella said to Lynn. "I hope it's okay?".

"It's very nice" Lynn smiled. "Thank you".

"Then I'll let you get ready for bed" Marcella smiled back. "If you need me, my bedroom is just across the hall. Good night, Lynn".

"Good night, Mrs. Greythorn" Lynn said.

Over the next few days, Marcella and Lynn got to know each other better. As the next few days passed, a bond formed between the two. When Mrs. Prosser returned, Marcella and Lynn had already decided they would like to be together ... as mother and daughter. Mrs. Prosser took care of the arrangements, and soon Marcella had adopted Lynn.

The following May

It was a Sunday afternoon. Behind Greythorn's, Marcella and an eleven-year-old Lynn were loading some items onto their wagon.

"Well, that's everything" Marcella smiled. "Let's get these items delivered".

Soon, Marcella and Lynn took their wagon and horse and headed toward Enchancia Castle. Lynn looked forward to visiting the castle - she had never been there before. As they got to the front gate, Marcella stopped the horse and wagon.

"We have a delivery for Princesses Sofia and Lucinda" Marcella said to the guard on duty.

"Your expected, Mrs. Greythorn" the guard smiled. "Please proceed to the courtyard. The staff will help unload your wagon".

"Thank you" Marcella smiled as she guided the horse and wagon through the front gate.

"Wow" Lynn exclaimed, impressed with the grandeur of the castle. "Thank you for letting me come along, Mom".

"Your very welcome, my precious witchlet" Marcella smiled at Lynn.

Marcella and Lynn's horse and wagon pulled into the courtyard where Baileywick and some male servants were waiting.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Baileywick" Marcella greeted. "Here are the magical supplies that Princesses Sofia and Lucinda ordered".

"Ah, good" Baileywick smiled as he turned to the male servants. "Please unload the wagon, and take the items to Sofia and Lucinda's workshop".

"At once, sir" one of the male servants responded.

As the servants took the items into the castle, Lynn looked up to see Sofia and Lucinda flying off on their brooms.

"There go our royal sorceresses" Marcella remarked. "They do so much for Enchancia".

"Their off to replant the village garden, then to sprinkle grow fast powder on the garden so the vegetables will be ready tomorrow" a woman's voice said.

Marcella and Lynn turned to see Queen Miranda standing there.

"It's a pleasure to see you again, Marcella" Miranda smiled.

"The honor is mine, Queen Miranda" Marcella said as she curtsied. "This is my daughter, Lynn".

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lynn" Miranda smiled.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Queen Miranda" Lynn smiled as she curtsied.

"While I have you here, Marcella, I'd like to invite you and Lynn to share Mother's Day with my family" Miranda offered.

"We wouldn't want to intrude" Marcella said.

"We'd love to have the two of you" Miranda smiled. "Please say yes".

"Then we accept" Marcella smiled back.

"It's settled, then" Miranda smiled. "We'll have it on Juneberry Island. See you there around 10:00 AM this Mother's Day".

Mother's Day on Juneberry Island

It was now Mother's Day. On Juneberry Island, Miranda, Baileywick, a sixteen-year-old Sofia, a sixteen-year-old Lucinda, a seventeen-year-old Amber, and a seventeen-year-old James, arrived by boat. As everybody was stepping off of the boat, Marcella and Lynn flew up on their brooms.

"Happy Mother's Day" Marcella and Lynn greeted.

"Happy Mother's Day" Miranda, Sofia, Lucinda, Amber, and James greeted back.

Sofia and Lucinda walked up to Lynn.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lynn" Sofia smiled.

"We hear good things about you, Lynn" Lucinda smiled. "Mrs. Hanshaw says your one of the best Buttercup Scouts she's ever had".

Lynn smiled at the complement.

As a huge picnic blanket was laid out, and the food was being laid out, Marcella produced a picnic basket.

"Lynn and I wanted to contribute something as well" Marcella announced as she brought out some peanut butter cookies, some oatmeal raisin cookies, and some choconut cookies.

"These look delicious" Miranda smiled. "Thank you".

Everybody sat down and had a good time enjoying the food and having a pleasant time being with one another.

(Sofia/Lucinda/Amber/James/Lynn) "We love them more than anyone. Our days are always so much fun. The good times have just begun".

(Sofia and Lucinda) "For me and our moms". (Amber and James) "For me and our moms". (Lynn) "For me and our moms".
