Chapter 8
~Sweden's POV~
"Sweden?... Berwald?" he asks again.
"... Ja. It's me," I reluctantly confirm, refusing to turn around to face him.
"It's been so long… Why did you leave?" Pain is audible in the Finn's voice, pain and sorrow. "I thought… I thought we had something…"
I open my mouth before realizing that I had no idea how to answer him. I could lie and say that I never really wanted to marry him anyway. It might break his heart, but at least he would be safe. And there are always others. Or… I could tell him the truth. I glance toward Denmark and Norway, and, surprisingly, they both react in the same way, giving me a little gesture to get on with it. I take a deep breath before turning around to see Tino, possibly for the last time. He gives me a look that pierces my soul, a look of betrayal, and I reach up to remove my mask, which I had forgotten to take off earlier.
"I'm a dragon, Tino…" I can meet his eyes no longer and drop my gaze to the snowy ground. I wait with eyes closed for him to say he's glad I left.
Instead, I hear the snow crunching and he steps forward and wraps his arms around me. I open my eyes in surprise and look down at him as he whispers, "I understand now."
A tiny smile forces its way onto my face as I embrace him and murmur, "I've missed you."
Denmark, the idiot seeming to have forgotten that I just tried to kill him, shouted at us, "Great, now kiss!"
I turned my head just enough to glare at him, not liking the way my cheeks began to burn at his words. At least Finland is amused; whether he's laughing at Denmark or me, though, I'm not about to ask.
Denmark tilts his head, acting confused. "You know how, right? Do I need to demonstrate?" he asks as he grabs Norway.
Said Norwegian, of course, slaps him hard enough to leave a red handprint on his face. "Don't touch me," he hisses venomously. He stalks away, throwing over his shoulder, "I'm going back now."
Denmark gazes after him for a moment, like a lost puppy, before giving Finland and I a grin that doesn't touch his eyes and announcing, "I'm going for a walk. I'm sure you two've got some catching up to do."
As he leaves, Fin asks me, "What's going on with them?"
That's right, I remember. He missed all of that. I begin, "I'm sure that idiot Dane told everyone that he killed a dragon…"
His face of confusion quickly changes to one of shock when I quickly summarize what had happened.
~Taiwan's POV~
I hurry back towards the dragonslayers' village, away from the cave that was home to Japan, China, and Hong Kong. If I'm away too long, the others might notice, and then they'd ask where I've been. I'm never very good at coming up with lies, but eyebrows will definitely be raised if I say I'm visiting my family, which happens to consist of mostly dragons. I know I should stop visiting them, but I can't just stay away from my only family! I idly wonder where Hong Kong was, as he wasn't there the last few times I dropped by. He must've been visiting Iceland again. Speaking of Iceland, I wonder if Norway has the same conflict I do… Maybe I should ask him someday. But if he isn't, he might punish me for suspecting him as well as being in this situation. Sometimes I wonder how I got roped into this entire thing. China, Japan, Hong Kong… All dragons, and I live with dragonslayers and heal their injuries. Even Vietnam vanished several years ago, and I haven't seen her since. I wonder- wait a minute… My chain of thought is lost when I see a lifeless body on the ground near the camp. Could it be…? Rushing over, my fears are confirmed. It's Hong Kong. I drop to the ground, trying to hold back tears but failing miserably. I carefully pick up his corpse to give him a decent burial and mourn him, knowing that the others would happily leave him for the birds.
~Romano's POV~
I can't even eat a fucking tomato without the world ending, can I? I was just minding my own business until Veneziano started freaking out.
"Germanyyyyyyy!" my little brother cries, running to the potato bastard.
"Ja?" he asks. "Vhat is it?"
"I couldn't find Norway! So then I went to ask Denmark where he was, but I couldn't find him either! And then Finland disappeared, too! Do you think they're okay?" Feli worries.
"I'm sure they're fine," Germany replies.
At this point, Moldova chimes in, "This weird guy with a mask told me to tell Denmark to meet him at the lake! That's probably where he is, and maybe Finland and Norway followed him?"
"What if he wanted to hurt Denmark?" Great, now he's in panic mode. I guess I should be a good brother and try to help out…
"Fratello, calm the fuck down! I'll go find them, okay?" I groan internally as I think, What have I just gotten myself into?
"You will?" Veneziano's eyes shine as he smiles, "You're the best, fratello!"
Shit. He gave me a compliment. Now there's no way I can get out of it. At least I don't have any plans for the next few hours. As I reluctantly plod toward the lake, I mentally curse out everyone responsible for this. Especially Denmark, the annoying bastard. In what seems like only a few minutes, I can see the sparkling blue water. There's not a person in sight. Can I go home now? No, I promised my brother… Dammit.
Suddenly the wind begins to roar in my ears. They ran into a fucking dragon, didn't they? I head toward the source of the sound to see a huge blue dragon flapping its wings to take off. I ready my machine gun and take aim.
"No! Don't!" Finland shouts as he tackles me from behind.
I struggle to free myself, but he's surprisingly strong. "What the hell are you doing?" I yell at him. "It's a dragon! You know they're dangerous!"
"I can't let you hurt him! I promised!"
"What the fuck are you saying? What did he do to you? Are you under some kind of spell?!" Maybe my brother was right to be worried…
He doesn't respond to my questions, but at least he lets me get up. I shoot him a glare, but he won't look me in the eye. The dragon is definitely out of range now, but...
"We're going back to camp now," I declare, dragging him by the arm despite his protests.
~Germany's POV~
Within an hour of Romano's departure, he's back, dragging Finland by the arm. He seems overly aggravated, but then again, he always is. He shares some heated words with the Finn and storms off, returning with Italy and Spain.
"I am going to find that dragon if it's the last thing I do, dammit!" he shouts. When Finland opens his mouth, Romano cuts him off, yelling, "It probably ate Norway and Denmark, for all we know!"
"That's not true!" Finland insists.
"How would you fucking know? Or are you just DEFENDING that monster?!"
So he's dragging the rest of Team Tomato along with him to go dragon-hunting…? At least he's not going alone, but it's too risky, in my opinion. Italy especially would be in danger, since he skips out on training frequently. Still, there's no arguing with Romano. He'll just curse you out and do what he wants anyway. There's no way I could convince him to let me tag along, either, knowing how much he hates me. However, I notice Russia quietly observing, and an idea comes to mind.
I quickly stride over to him and suggest, "Romano thinks Denmark and Norvay vere attacked by a dragon. Perhaps ve should follow them to help out."
To my surprise, he hums in agreement, nodding, "We wouldn't want anyone getting hurt because of Romano's rash decisions."
Maybe, just maybe, he agreed so quickly because he also has a premonition that something is going to go very wrong with their mission. Even Ivan doesn't want any of our fellow dragonslayers to die.
