Chapter 11
He tried to think of a way to make things right with Penny, but it was no use. Also, the fact that he didn't know that Penny was starting to have a crush on Sherman until it was too late didn't help him much either. He was grounded, but he listened very carefully about Mr. Peabody saying that he could make things right with her. Again and again he asked himself the same question on how he could. Growing frustrated, he then started to yell to himself how all of this was his fault.
Sherman: (to himself) way to go, Sherman! This is truly the worst thing you could have done for yourself. You have a girl that was your best friend, and managed to rip her heart in two. All because of another girl just like her. What on gods green earth were you thinking. ... What was I thinking?
Sherman thought and thought, and then realized that he was trying to make a new friend, but never told anyone. The his dad came in the room, wanting to help Sherman. He knew Sherman put himself in this position, but hey. The kid was only seven. What do you expect?
Mr. Peabody: I see a possible problem.
Sherman: Mr. Peabody. You do?
Mr. Peabody: yes
Sherman: good. I've been looking for it for a long time now and have had a terrible time with it. What do you think it was?
Mr. Peabody: what you were thinking was about the fact that you were looking for her to respect you so much, you began only thinking about you. You were thinking about her, that girl from Ancient Norway because of the fact that you wanted to.
Sherman: wow. Never saw it that way before.
Mr. Peabody: love does things to people. Even things they don't expect.
Sherman: even people who never felt that way before?
Mr. Peabody: especially people who never felt that way before.
Sherman: dang.
Mr. Peabody: Sherman, let me ask you something. If Penny would have told you she had a crush on you, how would you have reacted.
Sherman: I... I don't know. But now that I know that, I feel really bad for what I have done. I actually feel bad about it because I like her, too. I didn't realize it until now.
Mr. Peabody: don't worry, Sherman. Everything will be fine. Besides, did you tell her you were sorry?
Sherman: at the end of the argument. But all she told me was that I also needed to apologize to you.
Mr. Peabody: well, maybe you should try that again.
Sherman: okay.
Mr. Peabody left the room and Sherman was thinking of a way to apologize to Penny, because he felt that saying sorry alone wasn't going to cut it. He knew that he had to make it more specific, and more sensitive to Penny. Feeling a new sense of appreciation for her, he knew what he needed to say. But he was going to say it in text, in case she was busy, and was too scared to tell her in person.
Sherman: I know what to text her. (Texts message) There. I hope this works.
Meanwhile, Penny here's a vibration from her phone, but decided to wait until she was finished with a portion of her project. When she was finished, she went to see what it was, and saw it was a text from Sherman.
Penny: ugh! What could he want? If he's thinking that a simple sorry is going to fix everything, he's sadly mistaken. He'll need to make it up to me better than that.
But it wasn't a simple sorry. It was something more complex, more define, more serious.
Sherman's text:
Hi, Penny. It's me Sherman. I know you don't want anything to do with me right now, and I understand why. Look, I just want to say, I am so sorry for the way that I have acted lately. I shouldn't have done what I have did, and I know that now. And you are right. I did lie to you. But I also lied to Mr. Peabody. But the worst mistake that I have made was pushing you away, even though you had every right to worry. I did fall in love with someone from the past. I thought that she was all I ever wanted. And that's when I found out that I lied to even myself. I thought I loved her until I truly opened my eyes. You are my best friend and have been for a long time. I should not have thought about only myself. You have helped me a lot, and I realize that you have been their for me. But lately I haven't been there for you, and that is totally my fault. You are my best friend, the one person who I can tell anything, no matter how embarrassing it is. The one who understands me clearly and I love you for that. I accept full responsibility for my actions. I am not expecting you to forgive me instantly. But I do want to say one thing: I am sorry I hurt someone that I truly loved. And that person is you.
Your friend,
Sherman.
P.S. How can I make it up to you?
Penny was extremely shocked at what she had read. This message only proved that Sherman was wrong and he was finally taking responsibility for his actions. She was in tears about the fact that this message was touching, and the fact that it showed that Sherman truly loved her. Penny was in tears and was touched. She did not really know how to respond.
Penny: (crying a little) oh, Sherman!
Paul: (coming in) Penny. Are you ok?
Patty: what's the matter, sweetie?
Penny: Sherman apologized to me in the most touching way. He said many things that showed how glad he is to have me as a friend.
Patty: aww.
Paul: would you like some alone time, sweetie?
Patty: Paul!
Penny: actually, I would like some privacy.
Parents: ok.
As they leave her room, Penny continues to think about the text. Her parents talk a little outside, but she is more focused on the message Sherman sent her.
Penny: oh, Sherman. What am I going to do with you?
