I looked at the man shrouded in red, his glare was piercing and his lips were hinting at a smirk.
"Please." I said more calmly than I felt. "Help him."
His chin tilted upward in faint interest. "What will I receive in return?"
I was at a loss, "Whatever you ask of me, I don't care." I was almost laughing now. Half crazed as my best friend's breathing became labored. The swelling on his face was beyond comprehension.
"Good," he smirked then strode fluidly toward me, quicker than I thought possible. The vampire gripped my shoulder tightly. "That is exactly the response I was hoping for."
"You will pledge your human life to me, and you will become my assistant and a half vampire, for the time being. You will travel as my companion, entertain me and keep me in good humor."
His green eyes were as hard as the jagged line of the scar on his face. He couldn't have been more than forty or in his early thirties. However, he seemed immensely older, and held an air of authority that I had never before encountered.
"I will teach you the ways of the vampires. All of our customs, our way of life." He surprised me by talking softly, then made me nervous when he grasped a lock of hair, it must have escaped its hairpins, and rubbed it gently.
"I can't do that!" I cried out. "I can't just abandon my life like that. I still have to finish high school- I have a whole life planned already. I won't give it up!"
"If that is the case then your friend will die." Mr. Crepsley picked up Madam Octa's cage with one hand, then turned toward the shattered balcony door.
"That's it then? Youre just going to wash your hands of the situation?" I let out a dry, hollow laugh that soon turned into a sob as Steve's lips turned a sickly blue.
"You have made your choice." It didn't sound like a question. "There is nothing for me to do."
My stomach was churning, probably trying to digest itself, I felt like I was going to throw up.
"If I do it will you save him, please?" The color of his hair blurred in my vision through the tears.
His eyes turned sincere and his face was grave as he nodded, "Yes."
"Then do it." I sneered. He seemed taken aback by the contempt in my voice.
"Do it, now!" I half screamed.
The vampire produced a small, clear vial from his cloak. He leaned down, thumbnail pressing into the skin of Steve's arm, he quickly cover the cut with his finger. The vampire tipped his head back and emptied the vial contents into his mouth. He swished the liquid around for a while, and then pressed his lips to the cut. The entire thing should have been disturbing. In a way it was. But I felt so numb. I just wanted Steve to survive. I couldn't live with myself if his death was on my hands.
Mr. Crepsley stood up again, and we both watched as the color returned to Steve's face and he began breathing evenly.
"With rest, he should return to health within a number of hours." Mr. Crepsley said quietly.
"Thank you." I could feel the tears spilling down my face. The vampire looked at me, his expression earnest and pained
.
"Do not yet thank me, my dear. There is still the other end of our bargain." He quickly grabbed my hands with his own. I started to fight him. He was surprised but proved to be even stronger than I was. A sharp pain flared from my fingertips and I growled in frustration.
"Remain still." He pressed his hands against mine, they were surprisingly warm. There was a moment of silence, followed by almost blinding pain as I felt his blood traveling to my heart.
When he finally pulled away, I could feel new energy coursing through my veins. It was coupled by a deep sorrow in my heart. Mr. Crepsley licked his fingers, then my own. I stared in dumb awe as the small incisions healed into ten neat crescent scars.
"Well, we should be on our way then." He stated simply and moved to once again gather madam octa's cage.
Up until this moment I had managed to retain my very frail grasp on remaining calm, but as his words I began to feel the hot pangs of panic shot through my entire being.
"I can't leave yet." I said hurriedly and tried to quickly reach the door handle.
"We do not have time to waste Mistress Shan. Dawn will come soon enough, and I would like to be gone before then." Mr. Crepsley extended his hand and beckoned me closer.
"Sam? Aren't you going to at least enjoy your own party?" A childish voice yelled from the other side of the door.
"J-Just a minute Annie." My stomach did somersaults inside me.
"If you do something stupid," Mr. Crepsley growled, and fixed me with a steely gaze. "such as killing your entire family, it will not be my fault."
I glared at the man in red, our eyes locked, and I couldn't tell that we were at an impasse.
"I can't leave yet." I repeated sternly. I quickly opened the door to the hallway and slipped outside the room, I grabbed my sister and hurried down the hall as fast as I could.
Better? I hope so 6_6 Let e know how you liked it in the reviews below!
