Hey, not an overly long chapter but I did promise I'd update everything so here it is.
As he walked across the patchy green grass of Holby park, Jonny noticed a few light drops of rain falling from the heavens and subconciously wrapped his thin jacket around himself a little tighter. He had been running through what he was going to say to her in his head for the past half an hour but everytime he ran through it, something changed due to worrying about how she would react or he added something else that he'd forgotten and hoped would be the key to gaining her forgiveness. At this point he also began to think about his baby, wondering whether she had been for the scan she was due, whether his baby was developing correctly and when he or she would arrive. He wondered whether she had made any attempt to find a new job, if she had where would it be? Would she have searched anywhere far away? Was she planning to move away from Holby without anyone knowing? At this point he was starting to realise that he was probably worrying too much and about very farfetched outcomes so he decided to phone Sacha.
The two friends sat on either side of their bench in almost silence as she picked her fingernails and shuffled nervously. They had talked for a while about what she should say, and how she would try and stay calm and not overreact to anything he said but now they sat waiting. Sacha soon felt his phone buzzing in his jacket pocket once again, he stood up and walked a few paces away before answering it,
"Hello?"
"Hey Sacha, it's Jonny. I'm in the park, is Jac okay with me coming?"
"Oh okay, um yeah she's come round to the idea as much as she's going to I think... We're um, we're still by the pond if you want to come over now..."
"Aye alright, I'm on my way, be there in a minute or so."
"Super, see you soon."
"bye."
"bye." Sacha hung up, placed his phone back in his pocket and walked back over to Jac cautiously, "Jonny's here...he's on his way over." The was a moment of silence as he observed her reaction, her eyes widened and he noticed her breathing increase speed slightly. He took hold of her hand lightly and smiled before whispering encouragingly, "It'll be ok Jac."
At that moment a familiar voice appeared behind her, he spoke warmly in his soft scottish tones, he almost sounded surprised, as though he was expecting someone else, as he spoke her name,
"Jac?" Sacha watched as her emerald eyes grew wider and gave her a nod as if giving her the permission and encouraging her to turn around.
"Jonny..." she spoke in a voice that was barely a whisper, "I'm so sorry...I..." He interrupted her abruptly, forgetting about all the things he had planned to say, by pulling her thin frame into his arms as both of them tried to hold in the tears brimming in their eyes.
"Don't worry about it...I'm just glad I've got you back." he whispered carefully through her hair before she stepped back and shot him a worried look of confusion. "What is it?" he queried, stepping cautiously towards her.
"I...I..this," she gestured between them lightly with her hands, "this doesn't mean everything's ok again...we can't just go back to normal and pretend like nothing happened." The cheerful sparkle in the nurses eyes faded as she spoke, deep down he knew this wasn't the miracle cure to all their problems but his heart overtook his head and made him believe everything would be ok.
"I know." he replied solemnly, "but we can start small." She gave him an apprehensive look as he stopped and thought about how to get back into her good books. He took a moment to take in her appearance, even in her big coat he could make out a change in her body as his child grew inside her, her skin was pale and her eyes were dull and sporting deep dark circles beneath them, he began to wonder whether she was still suffering from morning sickness and whether she had been eating properly, considering he knew there was very little in her flat. In a spur of the moment thought he blurted out, "do you want to get dinner?" and regretted it immediately as he noticed her begin to get nervous at the thought of sitting in a crowded restaurant, surrounded by hundreds of people gawping at her.
"No...not in a restaurant, not now." Sacha took this as his excuse to step in,
"What about my place? The kids are at Chrissie's and I could whip something up for you...I know how much Jac wants to try my famous toast a la beans." he said winking at her as she cracked a small smile. Jonny looked at the mother of his child hopefully as she seemed to chew it over in her mind,
"Jac? What do you think? Dinner at Maison du Levy?" he queried trying to make light of what seemed to be a difficult situation for the consultant. She stood there for what seemed like an enternity weighing up the pros and cons in her head, looking between the two men who were both smiling at her expectantly, but in her heart she knew she had to agree,
"Okay...but no beans, I'll probably puke at the sight of them!" she added jokingly, making the two men chuckle as Jonny threw his arm around her shoulder.
