Chapter 11

Antonio had broken every road violation to get to Navy Pier as fast as he could; as he skidded to a halt and jumped out of his car he looked terrified around at the now blocked off entrance and searched for a way in.

"Sir," A uniformed officer approached him, "Sir is everything alright?" His training telling him this wasn't just someone who didn't know what was going on the man, a few years older then himself was distraught.

"My names Antonio Dawson. My sister- my little sister is the one up on that ledge! I have to see her."

"Okay Mr-"

"Detective," He corrected automatically. He had been a Detective for less then a year now. Having his dream come true he was quick to correct anyone who thought he wasn't.

"Detective," The uniformed officer corrected himself, "Come with me," He spoke into his radio and led Antonio under the yellow tape. They waited a few minutes but it seemed like forever to Antonio; finally a plain-clothes woman wearing a vest approached them.

"Thanks," She looked at the uniformed officer, "Hi, I'm Officer Jules Willhite."

"Hi. How's my sister?" He avoided all pleasantries and got straight to the point.

"She's refusing to talk to anyone. Didn't even tell us her name, actually she hasn't said anything," Jules led him down to where a makeshift command centre had been set up. Antonio could see a boat down below where Gabby was. If she did jump she'd most likely live.

"I want to talk to her!"

Jules nodded and spoke into her radio, "My Lieutenant is coming over," She told him.

Antonio nodded and again waited longer then he liked to be updated on the situation.

"Detective Dawson, I'm Lieutenant Brason. Come with me," An older man approached him and then just as quickly turned around, "Hopefully you can shed some light as to why your sister is doing this."

"Let me talk to her," He insisted again, "I know I can talk her down. She'll talk to me even if she won't talk to anyone else."

"I understand your concern but I can't let you do that right now," He explained calmly, "Now can you tell me why Gabriela might be up there?"

Antonio shook his head, "Our parents died in March in a car crash; Gabby was in the car with them and she has survivors guilt and I think PTSD. My wife and I took her in and we've been trying to help her but… look can you just let me talk to her? I took all the negotiation classes at the academy; plus she's my sister! I can't loose her."

It was against protocol to let family members try and talk down subjects; however in this situation Brason could se how it might work out. Antonio was a police officer and was trained in negotiation; at the very least he could get Gabriela to start talking.

"Aright but you're going on a harness and when I tell you to come down you listen understand Detective?" He used rank in the hopes he understood he was serious.

"Yes Sir," Antonio responded professionally before following to get suited up.

Antonio was given a headset to communicate to Brason and the team with and after he was secularly fashioned he climbed up to the very top of the main building.

"Gabriela," He carefully took steps closer to her.

"NO! NO! GO AWAY ANTONIO!" She yelled, "I'M FINISHED! I CAN'T DEAL WITH ANYTHING!

"What can't you deal with Gabby?"

"Mom and Dad…." She sobbed more tears falling down her already raw face, "I can't live when they died Antonio. I'm so lost. I don't belong anywhere." She sniffed back tears.

"No, no Gabby; you belong at home with me and Laura and Eva," He insisted. "We want you."

"No! I'm just in your way! Laura wants to open up her own bakery and…and you're so worried about me!" She took another step forward.

"GABRIELA!" Antonio shrieked ignoring Brason telling him to stand down, "Gabriela how stupid are you? You're not this selfish. If you die you'd just be leaving me in the same position. Don't you see Gabriela? I love you Gabriela so much; let me help you, I want to help you."

"No,: She shook her head, "No!" She looked down and took a step.

"Gabriela!" Antonio lunged forward to catch her and just barely grabbed a few of her fingers.

"ANTONIO!" She shouted.

"Gabby I'm not going to let you do this," He pulled her up and secured her to his safety belt; then he tied her hands so she couldn't undo the restraint and he climbed down the building.

"I hate you!" Gabriela told him through gritted teeth.

"I don't care," He released the restrains and pulled her into the tightest hug possible. "I love you and right now that's all that matters now I'm going to take you to the hospital."

"No!" She shook her head trying her best to get away from him, "Antonio just let me go!"

"Gabriela," He held her wrist and was almost dragging her before he managed to get her to the ambulance, "Gabby we just want to help you. Things are hard right now but they have to get better." He sat her down on the stretcher.

She started shaking and brought her knees up to her chin. "What's going on?" He looked at the paramedics frantically.

"She's having a panic attack," One of them answered as he rushed to kneel in front of Gabby, "Breath between your legs," He instructed, "Breath deeply."

Gabriela didn't respond and she fell onto the stretcher still shaking and now mumbling.

"DO SOMETHING!" Antonio shouted angrily, "Can you do something?"

The paramedics loaded her into the ambulance, "We're taking her to Chicago Med. It's the closet hospital," One of the paramedics told Antonio as he held the door open for him to jump in.

"Okay!" He jumped in tried to comfort Gabby as the ambulance went speeding down the road. When they finally got to the hospital he was pushed to the side as doctors and nurses tended to his sister. Finally after twenty minutes a young doctor approached him.

"You're Gabriela's older brother and guardian?" He asked.

"Yes. Is she alright?"

"We managed to get het out of her panic attack and she's asleep now. Can you tell me about her recent medical history."

"In March our parents died and she was in the car with them; I think she's really taking that hard she'd wanted to die a couple of time but she's never tried anything until tonight. I'm really not sure what set her off. She had a fight with her friends and I know she feels like she doesn't belong anywhere. She's so lost," He looked adown at the ground, "I want what's best for her Doc. I want my little sister back," He looked up and was whipping tears away from his eyes.

"We'll do everything we can," He promised, "Has she seen a physiologist yet?"

"No. She's refusing to see one but I think she needs it."

"Yes well I'll get our pediatric physiologist to talk to her tomorrow. We're keeping her overnight for now and pending on what the doctor says tomorrow she might be kept longer."

"Right, what room is she in?"

"314."

"Thanks," He rushed towards the stairs and up to his sister's room. Stopping just before the door and walked back to a payphone to call Laura and update her on what had happened.

"Hello?" Laura picked up on the third ring.

"Hey Babe its me," Antonio felt better just by hearing her voice.

"Antonio how is she?"

He shook his head even though she couldn't see it, "Not good. I managed to talk her down but she's so lost Laura. I thought she was bad when Mom and Dad died… but tonight… I've never seen her like this before and it scares me. I can't loose her."

"We'll get her the help she needs. We don't need to worry about anything else right now. Do you want me to come and be with you?"

"No, no I'm alright. Thanks though."

"Alright Babe, call me if you need anything."

"I will, I love you bye."

"Love you too Bye."

"You can't make me talk to her," Gabby shook her head defiantly at her older brother, "I don't have to say anything."

"Gabriela-"

"Stop calling me that! You're not Dad!"

"I'm just trying to help you!" He threw his arms up in the air, "You need help Gabby. Don't you want to be like you were before?"

"No," She shook her head, "I don't want to be happy not without Mom and Dad."

"Gabby you don't have to say anything but please, please say something for me. I don't like seeing you like this. It really hurts me."

Gabby stared at him but she didn't say anything.

"I'm going to tell her she can come in now," Antonio walked towards the door and opened it. Inside walked an older woman with grey hair.

"Hello Gabriela," She began, my names Dr. Allison. "I hear you've been having a hard time."

"I don't want to talk to you," She told her as she looked at her and crossed her arms.

"Well that's alright. Do you mind if I talk to your brother?"

"Antonio thinks I'm crazy," She cried.

"Gab's I don-"

"Yes you do! You don't understand. You want me to change well I want you to change! I miss the old Antonio who I could tell everything too. Why do you have to be my father now? Why can't you be cool?"

He was shocked to say the least. Sure he'd been giving her boundaries and limits but she was thirteen years old. When he wasn't in charge of her he didn't want to do that they could just talk and he'd listen to her. He missed that to but he wasn't sure how they could have both."

"Okay well Detective Dawson I think Gabriela and I might be able to talk more if you waited outside. I'll come and talk to you when we're done."

Antonio knew she would want to talk to Gabby in private, "Alright," He nodded his head and left the room While outside he was surprised to see Leslie, Kelly, Andy and Matt walk down the hallway. He had called their parents to update them on the situation but didn't expect them to come and visit.

"Detective Dawson!" Leslie ran up to him, "I couldn't sleep last night I was so worried. Is she okay?"

"She's going to need a lot of support," He told her honestly, "She's talking to a doctor now but I'm sure she'd like to see you after."

"I told her it might be better to wait a few days but she wanted to come. I hope its okay," Hannah explained, "She called the boys to and so they came as well."

Rubbing his shirtsleeve up and down Matt didn't meet Antonio's eyes when he asked, "Is she really sad Sir?"

"Yeah she's going through a lot of things right now."

He nodded his head, "She needs help."

"Yeah she does. Everyone needs help sometime."

"I guess," He responded.

"Detective Dawson Sir..." Andy spoke next, "My parents wanted to make sure I didn't do anything to hurt Gabby. I'm sorry if I did; I'm really sorry."

"No, no I don't think what any of you did causes Gabby to do what she did; it's really complicated alright?"

"She seemed okay a few days ago," Kelly shrugged his shoulders.

"Yeah well she was faking it pretty good," Antonio answered his question.

"We brought her lots of things to make her feel better," Leslie showed Antonio the bag she was carrying, "I brought movies and magazines and some nail polish and lip gloss and the boys brought food of course."

"Hey! You can't go wring with candy!" Kelly piped up.

"Yeah," Andy echoed.

"Oh boys," Leslie flipped her hair and sighed, "Can I see her first?" She asked hopefully.

"Yeah if you want I'll go with you just to make sure Gabby's alright."

"Okay," Leslie nodded.

Half an hour later Dr. Allison came out of the room, "Well Detective Dawson I think-" She stopped as she saw the other occupants in the room.

"Hey kids why don't we go and give Antonio and Gabby's doctor some time to talk," Hannah led the children out of the room.

"Gabby's best friends," Antonio explained their presence.

"That's good they're here to see her. Now I was able to get a little out of her and I think that if she takes some medication and see's me on a regular basics she'll be able to go home in a few hours."

"Medication?"

"Yes. Your sister is suffering from depression Detective."

"But she's so young."

"Yes and hopefully with a lot of help and hard work we can get her better but she needs to be on medication; its just a low dose but I think it will help," She handed him a prescription.

"I'm not sure, will she get better with therapy alone?"

"It's possible but right now I don't think we should take a chance that it won't work fast enough and another incident like last night will happen again. I think that a combination on both will help her the most."

"Alright," He nodded and stuffed the prescription in his pocket, "What should I do about her seeing me as a father figure and not an older brother?"

"I think we need to sit down and discuss it. We can make Gabriela's first appointment two hours; I can talk to you and your wife the first hour and then talk to Gabby the second." She handed him over a card, "Call my office and book an appointment for next week. I always block off some time for emergencies like this.

"Okay I'll call."

"Good," She nodded and walked out of the waiting room.

Hannah and the kids came back in shortly after and Leslie as the first one to speak, "Can we see her now?"

"Yeah sure," He said and led them into the room, "Gabby your friends are here to see you," He said as he walked into the room.

Gabby turned to look at them and she slightly frowned, "Why did you come?"

"I'm really sorry Gabby," Leslie spoke first, "You're my best friend and I didn't mean to hurt you I promise."

"Okay," Gabby said, "Antonio told you what happened?"

"Yes and I'm so glad you didn't do anything. We all are."

"Yeah," The boys nodded their head in conformation.

"We all love you Gabby and we're your friends. Can I hug you?"

"Okay," She said and Leslie walked over and hugged her Matt close behind.

"I like you Gabby," He said, his voice no louder then a whisper, "I really like you."

Gabby grinned a little bigger, "I like you too. I'll try and get better."

"Okay you four you'll see Gabby later," Hannah promised them.

"Hopefully she'll be at school on Monday," Antonio told them.

"Yay!" Leslie cheered and followed her mother and friends out of the room.

"Gabby," Antonio walked towards her, "Thank you for talking to Dr. Allison. Laura and I are going to talk to her as well and we're going to try and get through this together alright?"

"Okay Antonio," She nodded and reached out to hug him and Antonio hugged her in return.
