Chapter 11: My Defeat Sleeps/ With Her Success

"Ch-charla?!" exclaimed Happy in astonishment.

But it wasn't Charla. The exceed changed direction at the last moment, missed the counter by inches and then hovered, bobbing up and down in distress.

"Machi?!" cried Scarlett, her and Neil rushing forwards.

The cat bobbed even faster when it saw the children.

"Wait what?" said Natsu, "I-I don't understand, what's going on?!"

"It's mum's exceed," hissed Neil anxiously.

The exceed seemed to be struggling to form coherent sentences, "L-Lucy's … big… trouble," it managed to gasp, before all its strength seemed to vanish and it dropped heavily into Neil's arms.

Lucy's in trouble, the words echoed through Natsu's head. Lucy's in trouble. Lucy is in trouble.

The servant paced back and forwards in front of his prisoner. She glared at him fiercely. Some guilds never change. His under-servants were rushing around the girl, forcing tubes into her arms, fixing her to the giant machine that had been his master's life's work. He found it incredibly amusing to find her chained to this spot, after so long, and after all the trouble she had caused them.

He leaned down so that his face was a mere inch away from hers, "why don't we talk for a while huh? Pass the time until my master gets here."

She snorted. He sensed no fear from her, only a vague contempt. It provoked him. Well she would not be feeling so superior for long.

"I'm glad you agree," he continued cheerfully. "So, let me tell you a story about a girl." He settled himself on a stool in front of her. "She was a mage, and a member of the most powerful guild in all Fiore." The servant spat onto the floor. "One day her guild was attacked by a powerful alliance of dark guilds, an alliance so strong that even the mighty Fairy Tail could not withstand it. The girl was fighting our master. And he generously offered to leave her guild if she became our captive. The girl agreed in order to save her guild from annihilation. We headed back to our facility with her in tow, and our most powerful mages went on ahead. But the girl outwitted the foolish hunters who guarded her and escaped into the forest. She was missing for three months, but we recaptured her and brought her to this facility, only to discover that the girl was pregnant. While she was with child, her magical power was diminished. But to kill the children seemed like a waste of half-celestial a mage, and besides my master thought that they could be used to blackmail the girl. Anyway her pregnancy was interfering with our plan, so we used a powerful lost magic on her. This magic 'speed' made her ready to give birth within the month, and her twins continued to age faster than normal children. The spell did not have a lasting effect on the mother though," the servant leered down at the prisoner.

"Our plan proceeded well after that. We experimented on the children to see if lost magics could be artificially recreated while we waited for our machine to be ready for use." He licked his lips, "it was then that everything went wrong. We underestimated the girl. The bitch managed to summon some spirits without holding the keys, which we kept separate from her. And she escaped from our facility in the dead of night, taking the children, her keys and two exceeds with her….we have hunted her ever since."

The servant stared down at the girl – or – was she a woman now? It had been almost six years since he had last seen her. "Does this story sound familiar to you?" he asked sweetly.

"Oh vaguely," said the Fairy Tail mage, "You're forgetting the part where I knocked you on your backside on my way out."

The servant's smile widened, "a mistake I won't be repeating….Lucy Heartfilia."

Wendy lay face down in the dirt. She slowly and calmly used her magic to force the thick spikes out of her body, freezing the cells around the wound immediately afterwards to prevent blood loss. Charla was lying unconscious next to her. But Wendy could smell her breath and knew she lived. The bodies of their attackers littered the ground around her. It had taken everything she had to defeat them and they had almost taken her down with them.

She would be dead now if it wasn't for her healing abilities. She had brought her body into a state that resembled death, slowing all bodily functions except the brain, and sustaining her life force through magic. It was a technique of her own invention and Wendy had named it sustain. It had the duel benefit of allowing her to slowly heal herself from mortal wounds, while appearing dead to enemies. She had gotten the idea from playing dead during the great battle. And Porlyusica had told her it was the most advanced healing technique ever invented. 'Grandeeny would have been proud of you,' she had said. Wendy let this pride drive her healing now, because she couldn't die, she still had to save Lucy.

Wendy had smelled her strongly during her fight. It seemed like Lucy was fighting too, because the smell of her magic had exploded suddenly out of nowhere, followed later by the smell of her blood. Then Lucy's smell receded, though it was still close by. But Wendy was one hundred percent sure that she lived. Fairy Tail mages didn't just die like that.

Lucy and the servant were having a glaring contest. Her indifference to his story had provoked him to anger. Something he had not felt for a very long time. Though he knew the celestial mage would soon die, he felt the inexplicable need to assert his dominance over her, to prove that he was better than her. Seeing her stupid face again made him realise how much her defeat of him on the night of her escape had bothered him. He wished he could kill her himself, but knew he mustn't disobey his master. That was unthinkable.

Instead he started ranting again. "You know when we came to Fairy Tail, we weren't even planning to capture you in the first place! We had been in seclusion for years, carrying out our plan, but my master knew that there would be strong mages at Fairy Tail. He decided to act when rumours reached us of the several dragon slayers which were now members. Dragon slayers are some of the most powerful mages in existence. A few of them would have been excellent fuel for our lovely machine here. But when we got to Fairy Tail we found something even better than dragon slayers; a celestial mage. Now it is a common misconception that celestial mages are weak, because they fight using the spirits they summon. However, it takes an extraordinary amount of magical power to summon a spirit, because you have to sustain their life force. That's why most celestial mages can only summon one spirit at a time. But during the battle, we watched you summon more than ten spirits at once. Magic like that, extraordinary. We would only need one celestial mage of such power to summon our machine, instead of several dragon slayers, and-"

The servant was interrupted by heavy footsteps and a tired sigh, "you have a big mouth."

The servant flinched and turned to face his master. A wave of hatred rushed out from Lucy, momentarily making the servant dizzy.

"You shouldn't let her get to you like that," said the master quietly, "such weakness." A sharp blast knocked the servant to the floor and slammed Lucy hard against the back of the chair.

"Now!" snapped the master at the servants who were cowering behind the machine, "you lot go and deal with the she-dragon slayer lying on my doorstep. I said that she was to be killed if she got within fifty miles of this place, not fifty yards!" He kicked the stool out of his way, "she has defeated my weak hunters, so go and end her!"

Lucy's head jerked up sharply. Wendy couldn't be here could she?! No….

All the servants scurried out of the room, except the chief-servant who lay apologising at his master's feet. The master approached the celestial mage. Lucy was gasping for breath; the attack had sent all her nerves ringing, yet somehow she still managed to spit in his face. The master struck her so hard that stars winked in front of her eyes and her head spun frantically.

"You have caused me enough trouble these past six years. You Fairy Tail mages are the worst. Yet Fairy Tail with burn shortly along with the rest of Fiore, and you Lucy Heartfilia, will be the fuel which lights the furnace." The man smirked infuriatingly and then turned to leave the room. "This is my revenge Mavis," he breathed as he left. When he had first formulated this plan, when he had first started building his machine, he had known, known that he would use her guild to destroy this land.

Lucy was shaking, the magic nullifying chains made her feel completely drained. She was exhausted, but now she feared too. 'Wendy,' she thought desperately, 'run Wendy, please run…'

Jellal heard shouting as he rushed towards the guild entrance.

"We've got to go and save her!"

"Of course, we'll take the whole guild!"

"But how are we going to get there, the cat said that they're on the edge of Fiore!"

Jellal shoved the doors open, "everyone!" he shouted, "I need to warn-". But no one was listening, everyone was too busy panicking and shouting at each other.

"OI," Jellal bellowed. "YOU ALL NEED TO LISTEN TO ME RIGHT NOW!"

Silence fell.

"Fiore is about to be destroyed!"

So, I know this chapter is heavy exposition, I'm rushing to get a chapter out. But if you guys want I will write Lucy's escape from the experimental facility much more fully in a flashback.

As always, please review if you have any comments or cricisms :))
