A/N: So we are like crazy levels of sorry that it's taken this long to update :(
We do not own Pitch Perfect or any of its characters
Beca's cheek was resting against glass, her shoulders were slumped and the window was salty with the tears that hadn't stopped leaking out of the corners of her eyes since they had finally settled on a decision.
She sighed, looking at the passing scenery. Trees melted into each other in a blur because she couldn't find the energy to even focus her eyes. It was just a blur of colours. Of greens and blues and greys.
It's missing red, Beca thought. And the blue isn't bright enough.
"You alright, Becs?" Jesse asked, glancing briefly in her direction. "You've barely said two words since we left." His brows furrowed to show his concern and Beca attempted a casual smile and shrug to ease his worries.
It didn't really work.
"Beca…" Jesse chewed his lip, trying to conjure up some clever sentence that could cheer his friend up. "Look, I know that Chloe couldn't drive with you, but-"
"I'm fine, don't worry about me Jess." Beca lifted a finger and drew a smiley face on the foggy window to prove her point. "I can drive after the next gas station."
"I don't mind driving," Jesse shrugged the offer off, and Beca returned to her slumped, withdrawn position.
Jesse glanced over at her again, and he said, "I honestly thought you'd be a little more excited Becs. I mean, this has been your dream, ever since you were a kid. You never stopped talking about it in college either. I know things are different now you have Chloe but it's not like you're breaking up."
"I'll cheer up later, don't worry." That was a lie. "I'll be fine once we get there." Another lie.
Her mind wandered to her last night spent with Chloe.
"I'm sorry I can't drive with you tomorrow," Chloe said, entwining their hands. "It sucks. I wish my stupid students didn't do so much homework for me to grade."
"Well maybe you shouldn't set them so much homework," Beca said.
"They aren't supposed to do it! Since when have kids done their homework?!" Chloe replied, making Beca laugh despite how miserable she felt. "Anyway, I'm sorry."
"It's okay." Beca said, hoping that Chloe couldn't see the tears rapidly forming in her eyes.
Chloe wasn't an idiot though. She reached up to wipe a tear that had fallen onto Beca's cheek. "It's gonna be okay. I love you, and you love me. Nothing could break us apart, alright?"
Beca nodded.
"And I'm coming to visit you next week." Chloe added. "We have Skype, text, phone calls. It will be fine. We will be fine."
Beca breathed in, and finally met her girlfriend's gaze. "I-…I'm doing the right thing, right? Taking this job?"
"Yes, of course. Why would you think any different?" She asked.
"I feel sick."
"Because of the job?"
"Because I'm leaving you."
Chloe's breath hitched, and she had to clamp her mouth shut and bite her tongue hard to stop from begging Beca to stay with her, and not leave her. But she couldn't be the reason Beca gave up on her dream.
After what felt like a lifetime of driving, Beca finally pulled up at her new home.
With help from her Dad and an advance from Luke, she had managed to afford a small but decent two-bedroom place.
She nudged Jesse awake.
"What?" He said, grumpily.
"We're here," Beca said, half laughing at him. "Are you always this grouchy when someone wakes you up?"
"Always," he replied, rubbing his eyes. "Come on then, the van guy will have dropped off all your stuff, we've got shitloads to unpack."
"Van guy?" Beca said, smirking.
"You know what I mean," he said. "Looks like he left a light on too."
"Oh great," Beca said, shutting her car door. "What a great start to my first month in L.A." She unlocked the door. "A sky high electricity bill." She opened the door and then stopped in her tracks."Chloe?"
Beca's voice was cracked and her legs had turned to jelly and she felt a million different feelings rushing to her at once.
The brunette wasted no time sprinting forward and wrapping her arms around her girlfriend, and crashing their lips together as if their lives depended on it.
"You're here," Beca said. "You are actually here right?" She was convinced she had fallen asleep in the car and this was all a dream.
"Yeah, I am," Chloe laughed.
"H-how though?" Beca stumbled on her words.
"Me and Aubrey took the plane after you left." Chloe giggled at her own genius. "I wanted to surprise you. Also, everything is unpacked."
"Wait… Aubrey's here?"
"Chloe, honestly, it's "Aubrey and I", not "Me and Aubrey". You're a teacher for goodness sake," Aubrey tutted, but stepped out behind the red head, a grin formed on her lips.
Chloe rolled her eyes at her best friend's antics.
"Anyway, Jesse and I will be leaving you two alone for a while so Chloe can carry out her…ahem…plans."
"Plans?" Beca raised an eyebrow curiously.
"You'll see." Chloe only offered, with a sly wink and a peck on the cheek.
Aubrey and Jesse left early the next morning, and Beca and Chloe spent the weekend in bed, wrapped in each others arms. Chloe managed to convince Beca to go out shopping for the last few bits and pieces she needed, but for the rest of the time it was hard enough getting Beca to put clothes on.
"This weekend has been amazing," Beca said on their last night before Chloe flew back. "Thank you for surprising me."
"You didn't really think I was going to let you spend your first weekend alone, did you?" Chloe said, smirking. "I just wish I could stay."
"Yeah, I wish you could too," Beca said. "You know, there are schools in L.A."
"Becs..."
"I know you said you couldn't leave your job, but... This is going to be so hard without you."
Chloe leaned across and kissed her.
"You can do this," she said, tucking a strand of hair behind Beca's ear. "We can do this."
Beca pulled into the parking space outside her apartment, tears still filling her eyes. She had just driven Chloe to the airport. She didn't want to get out of the car. Didn't want to officially start her new life.
Her new home was deafeningly quiet now. She walked through the rooms, half expecting Chloe to jump out at her at any second.
But there was no one.
Just her and the sound of her footsteps.
