Chapter Ten

Edward P.O.V – Charlie's Funeral

I was sitting in our front room playing the piano, when Alice came running into the room yelling my name, "Edward!"

I sighed and stood up from the piano bench, "Yes Alice?" I asked in a defeated tone, it wasn't often that Alice was this urgent.

"Something terrible happened." I crossed my arms and walked over to Alice trying to read her thoughts but she wasn't thinking anything terrible. "Charlie has died Edward. His Funeral is in two days. Think of poor Bella, all her family are gone. We have to be there for her."

I shook my head 'no'. "She doesn't know who we are so she will think it's odd that a few strangers we at her father's funeral. We can't Alice."

Alice crossed her arms defensively and glared. "Well Edward, I don't care what you do; I'm going to pay my respects. He was really nice to me Edward. Jasper, Carlisle and Esme are coming as well, so it's really up to you."

"This isn't a good idea Alice."

"Too bad Edward, the decision is made. We're getting ready then we are heading to Forks. Are you coming or not?"

I weighed the pros and cons of going when Alice piped up. "Good, you decided. Now go get ready and we will meet you by the car." Well, I guess I was going.

Carlisle and Esme were leading us into the cemetery for Charlie's burial. We had just left the funeral home after a very short service, many people stood up to speak but none of Charlie's family rose, not even Bella. As a matter of fact, none of us even saw her, or smelt her there.

By this time the five of us and a few other towns' people were gathered around the casket watching it being lowered into the ground when I felt someone watching me. When I looked up I was met with a pair of piercing green eyes, and they were glaring at me.

I was taken a back for a few seconds because the girl glaring at me was a spitting image of Bella but with green eyes and red hair. She was a puzzle, I could feel my eyebrows draw together in thought. I tried to probe into her head but I was presented with a very impenetrable wall, just like Bella's. I guess this girl was related to her. "Alice?" I whispered, too low for humans to hear.

I see her Edward.

"Everyone is leaving now, and the product of this conversation is walking toward us." Carlisle interjected.

Before anyone could react a velvety voice in front of us said. "Hello."

"Hello, we are very sorry for your loss." Carlisle answered.

"Thank you; I am Charlie the second, short for Charlotte."

Carlisle extended his hand, and she took it with her glove clad ones. "Nice to meet you Charlie, I am Carlisle; this is my wife Esme, our son Edward, our daughter Alice and her fiancé Jasper." He said gesturing to the rest of us in turn.

"It is nice to meet you as well." She smiled.

Before I could properly think about what I was going to say, I blurted out in an ungentlemanly fashion, "Where are the rest of your family?"

Charlie looked taken-aback. "Umm…" She stammered. "My grandmother Bella is at home and my parents are dead, so it is just me."

"Why is your grandmother at home and not at her own father's funeral?" I blurted out again without thinking.

Charlie blinked a few times before she answered. "Oh… umm… my grandmother went crazy when her son, my father, died. She screamed for a while. 'Edward how could you?' then she started spewing nonsense about betrayal. She retreated into herself and totally shut down. She is waiting for Edward to come home she says, but he won't. She doesn't even know who I am anymore. Grandpa Charlie raised me when my parents died because obviously my grandmother couldn't. She doesn't even know her father died. So now I am completely alone in a house that holds too many ghosts." After a few seconds of thinking her eyes snapped to meet mine in horror, then to the rest of my families. "Oh my god, I can't believe I just told a bunch of strangers that!"

I saw all of us stiffen when she mentioned 'Edward' and 'betrayal'. It looks like she remembered. Alice thought.

Charlie tucked some hair behind her ear when she said, "Now that I idiotically told strangers about my life, how do you umm… how do you know my grandfather?"

"I have seen him around the hospital; he was very nice but a quiet man." Carlisle lied flawlessly.

Charlie looked down at her feet and said, "Oh."

"Who is Edward?" Alice asked.

Charlie looked up and giggled. "Besides your brother you mean? My dad, his name was Edward, grandpa Charlie named him, and he named me after grandpa."

I guess she didn't, sorry Edward. Alice thought again.

Charlie looked over at Alice as she talked to me through thought, which I found odd. It was like she was listening in.

Charlie took a deep breath and walked over to a near-by bench, and sat down. "I don't know why I keep spilling my life and my problems to strangers, but you guys seem to care and understand." Carlisle nodded and sat down next to her. "They were on their way to New York for their anniversary when they got into a car accident. They died instantly, I was seven. When my grandmother broke like she did Grandpa Charlie took me in, like I said. It was hard for him to see his daughter like that. She had my father young and I believe he felt responsible for it, because of himself and Grandma Renee. No one knows who my grandfather is, so it wasn't like I could live with him."

Carlisle looked over at me when she talked about her biological grandfather, I felt guilty enough without having his accusatory glances at me. While I was mentally berating myself, Charlie stood up and said. "Well, thank you for coming. I think I'm going to go home now, or walk around for a bit. Sorry for dropping my problems on you, but I believe I need to be alone now. Good-bye." She didn't wait for our good-byes, because she turned and left.

Esme walked over to me and took me into a hug. "Are you alright?"

I hugged her back and let go. "No, I kind of ruined that little girls' life now didn't I?"

"How? You didn't kill her parents."

"No, but I might as well have. Do you think we could go visit Bella, she won't know who we are so it won't be so bad. I want to apologize."

Carlisle shook his head 'no'. "Sorry Edward but I'm stepping in on this one. You wanted to leave her to her own. You wanted her to have a life without you. Just leave her be."

"Some life Carlisle, you heard what Charlotte said, she went crazy with grief."

"I have to agree with Carlisle, Edward. You made a rule for the rest of us; you can't just go breaking those rules just because you made them." Alice said.

I was getting angry, "You broke the rule first Alice, by coming here. I said not to come to disrupt her life, and that also meant Charlie, because he knew who we were even if she didn't."

"I didn't break anything Edward. I came to pay respects because a friend died. He treated me like part of his family. I didn't come here to disrupt Bella, I came here for support. Even if she doesn't know that I am here."

I had upset Alice, and I kind of felt bad about it. "Fine, I'm sorry. My decisions have been bad, I know. Let's just go home and forget we came here and met Charlotte. She is just like Bella, you know."

"How so?" Esme asked.

"I can't hear her thoughts either. It must run in the family." Esme smiled and took my arm to walk me back to the car, and away from Forks.

Bella's P.O.V – After the funeral

When I got out of sight of the cemetery I took the red wig off and let my honey brown hair down out of the tight bun. "There, now you look like yourself Bella dear." I heard from behind me. "Nice performance by the way."

"Thank you Zach. I was kind of surprised they were here to be honest. I guess Charlie was never out of Alice's visions."

"Did you ever expect him to be?"

"No." Zach chuckled. "Do you feel like hunting?"

Zach patted his stomach, "I ate this morning, but be my guest."

Zach and I ran through the forest until we came to a small clearing. There were three deer near a small stream. I crouched low listening to the deer's movements, making sure that they weren't alerted to my presence. As I crept closer one of the beasts' heads snapped in my direction, assessing the air for danger. I took this as an invitation and lunged.

When I was done my late morning snack I returned to the clearing to find Zach lying on the ground looking up into the sky. "Took over my habit did you?" I asked lying down beside him.

"It's peaceful. In this existence, we need peaceful. I thought you promised your dad that you would forgive the Cullen's."

"I did promise him, but I never promised him when. Wasn't today a step forward in that?"

"Yes, I suppose. But you made poor Edward suffer more then he should have to."

I sighed. "I guess, he did feel responsible for turning me crazy. I also have a dead son, didn't you know?" I said sarcastically.

"I'm sorry for your loss." He joked with me.

"It's okay, I didn't know him anyway."

Zach got all serious again, "So when are you going to talk to them as you and not as 'Charlie the Second'?"

"I don't think I am quite ready for that. I may have been able to do it today but it was mostly to make Edward feel bad. I'll get there, I promise. Will you leave like you said?"

"Yes Bella, I will be leaving."

I turned to look at him. "Won't it be hard to be on your own again after all this time?"

He just shrugged. "Maybe, but we will get used to being without each other and it isn't like it will be the last time you and I see each other."

"I guess."

He finally looked over at me and smiled. "There are the golden eyes we all love. It was odd seeing you with green eyes dear Bella."

"It was odd having to look different in general."

"You mind tricked them didn't you?"

I gave Zach a devilish smile, "Why, whatever do you mean?"

Zach laughed. "You made them all think they were looking at a human and not a vampire, because I am sure they would notice the lack of beating heart."

"Maybe." I replied, getting up off the ground and offering my hand out of habit. "Come on, I'll race you home."

Once Zach was off the ground we bolted into the forest towards our new home, temporarily forgetting about the promise I made to Charlie. Eventually I knew I would have to follow through. Just not today.
