David helped Simon up off the floor of the pharmacy. David steadied Simon, who was still in quite a lot of pain.
"Son are you sure you're going to be alright?"
Simon adjusted his glasses.
"I'll manage. We can't just continue to sit here. Besides…it's not getting any better outside."
They both looked outside the pharmacy's window. The street was filled with zombies. Simon guessed that at least a hundred were just outside the pharmacy doors.
"And…the others are still out there."
Simon tightened his grip on his Glock 19. David picked up the duffle bag with the extra guns and ammo. He moved to the door, looking out at the street. He grabbed the door handle. He glanced over at Simon his expression tense.
"Shoot only if you get cornered by them, and stay close to me Simon."
Simon nodded.
"The armored car we came here in is our best bet at getting away from this horde."
David pulled on the door, opening it wide. Several zombies turned their heads in the direction of the door. They began moaning at the sight of their prey, causing the other infected to turn towards the noise.
"Run Simon!"
David raised his handgun and fired. The closest zombie crumbled to the ground, a hole just above its eye. David and Simon sprinted towards the armored car, weaving in and out of the reach of the undead.
Bang! Bang!
Simon fired off two shots at a zombie that got a little too close for comfort. The first shot hit the zombie in the throat, but the second round found its mark into the zombie's forehead. It fell back, knocking two others zombies to the ground.
"Simon go! Now!"
Simon felt like his lungs were on fire as he sprinted towards the armored car. David was right next to him. Simon swore he could feel the reaching hands of the undead mere inches from grabbing him. Reaching to pull him to his death. David pointed to the open back door on the armored car.
"Simon! Jump into the back! I'll drive!"
Simon turned himself slightly, he was running full speed towards the back of the armored car. He counted the distance.
30 feet…20 feet…10 feet…NOW!
Simon jumped. Landing into the back of the armored car. He twisted his body around, bringing up his handgun. He fired the thirteen remaining rounds out of his handgun. He only hit four in the head, but they blocked the others from reaching him through the open door. The armored car started and a second later sped off. Simon pulled himself up and closed the back door.
"Simon! Are you alright?"
Simon looked back towards the open window that connected to the front of the armored car.
"Yeah! I'm good!"
Simon looked down at his Glock. The slide was locked back to the rear. He moved towards the window so he could talk to David.
"I'm out of ammo though. Used the entire magazine on the ones trying to climb into the back."
Simon heard David moving something around, a second later David's hand came through the window. He was holding a box of 9mm ammo. Along with two extra magazines for the Glock.
"Take this son. Until we find the others we need to stay well equipped."
Simon took the items from him. He quickly loaded all three magazines. He slapped one in the Glock, and chambered the first round. Simon heard something hit the floor next to him by the window. He looked over and saw a holster for his handgun. He picked it up and studied it. It was a simple black holster but it came with two magazine holders on it.
"Wear that Simon so you can have extra ammo ready."
Simon strapped it to his side. Placing the two extra magazines in the holders. Then he placed his handgun into the holster. He sat on one of the seats meant for the armed guards. His thoughts a mess, he felt physically exhausted. He looked back towards the front cabin window.
"Where are we heading Dave?"
"I don't really know. The streets are filled with zombies. Any ideas?"
Simon thought about it for a moment.
"Honestly I have no clue where to go…"
Suddenly the armored car slid to a halt. Causing Simon to get tossed out of his seat. He quickly sat up.
"Dave what happened?"
Simon heard the front door open and Dave struggle with someone.
"Dave! Dave! What's going on!"
The door to the back opened up and Simon found himself looking down the barrel of a M249 machine gun.
"Well look at who it is…the little bastard that was with Drake. Do me a favor boy, and get out of the vehicle."
Simon slowly moved out of the back, and stepped onto the street. He looked around and noticed that they were on a side street. One that was surprisingly clear of zombies. He looked at the man in front of him, recognizing him as the one Drake called War.
"Where is Dave?"
A moment later Dave came around from the side of the armored car. Closely followed by two others. War looked over at them.
"Secure their weapons. They'll be our bargaining chips against Drake."
Conquest took both of their weapons and Famine had the duffel bag of weapons and ammunition. War pointed his M249 at David, but he was looking at Simon.
"No trouble or I put one into his head…Got it?"
Simon nodded.
"Alright I don't want any trouble. I won't try anything…"
War grinned.
"Good boy…Conquest you take point!"
Conquest moved to the front of the group. Both War and Famine took up positions behind Simon and Dave. They began moving away from the armored car. War stopped and looked at Simon's back, a dangerous glint in his eye.
"You know…we only need one hostage…"
Simon started to turn back towards War. He saw a bright flash, followed by a loud bang. He felt an extreme pain in his chest. He felt himself fall to the ground. He felt all his strength leave his body. He heard David scream out to him. Both Conquest and Famine held him back. War kneeled down and grabbed Simon by his hair, he lifted him up slightly to look at him.
"You'll make a nice temporary distraction for us, you bleeding out will attract the dead to you. At least you will probably become infected and continue on that way."
War dropped Simon's head down. Standing up walked away signaling the others to follow him. Famine pulled a small syringe from her hip sack and injected it into David's neck.
"Something to put you to sleep for a while…"
David felt his eyes grow heavy, his body becoming sluggish. Conquest lifted him up on his shoulder and put himself in the middle with Famine in the rear and War in the front. Simon watched them move away and then finally out of sight. He tried to force himself to move but the pain was unbearable. He heard footsteps approaching him. He felt his body tense but then relaxed as he recognized the pattern of the steps. It wasn't the slow shuffle of the zombies, but deliberate footsteps of a person. They stopped close to him. He could feel their eyes on him.
"It's a surprise that you're still alive."
Simon listened to the very deep voice speak to him as he slowly turned toward his head toward him. He studied the man next to him. He was huge, well over six feet tall and built like a NFL linebacker. He was rough looking. Long messy black hair, and a scared face. Simon stared into his brown eyes, before he found his voice, but it came out weak.
"Who…who are you?"
The large man bent down to get a better look at Simon. Simon saw a large knife tucked in a sheath on his side.
"No one special…just someone who has finally found their place in the world."
Simon felt his blood run cold. It had been all over the news the last three years. A serial killer in the tristate area that the police had been unable to locate. Over three years, sixteen people had been killed. Only one victim had managed to survive. Alvin. Simon managed to barely clench his fist. It did not go unnoticed by the man looking at him like a piece of meat.
"What are you waiting for? Kill me and get it over with."
The man smiled wide.
"So, you know who I am? Impressive. With those cops were half as intelligent as you I may have gotten caught. Tell me…does the scars I gave your brother still brother him? Does he have nightmares of that night?"
Simon glared at him.
"Screw…you."
The man grabbed him by the throat and held him up. He held the knife up to Simon's face.
"I still remember how desperate your brother was to keep me from getting to you and your other brother. It was quite the touching site."
Simon managed to spit into his face. His eyes blazed with rage.
"Then why don't you kill me sick bastard! You obviously want to! So DO IT!"
The man put his knife back into his sheath, he instead pulled out a syringe from his pocket.
"Now even though I would like nothing more than to gut you right here. I'm afraid that would piss the doctor off greatly."
He dropped Simon on his back, popping the cap off of the syringe and jabbing it into Simon's neck.
"Agh!"
Simon felt the contents enter into him. The syringe was removed from his neck and thrown to the side.
"What did you put into me?"
The man effortlessly picked Simon up and threw him over his shoulder. Simon felt weak and despite trying to force himself to stay awake or fight back his body refused. The last thing he heard as his eyes shut was the man speaking in a whisper.
"Evolution. The next step of evolution."
Doctor Valis stood inside the surveillance room inside his lab underneath the cities chemical plant. From here he could watch what was going on in the city from satellites in space or the remaining street cameras spread throughout the city. One monitor he paid special attention to.
"Well it seems that overgrown buffoon can follow instructions."
The monitor showed a street view from across the street where Simon was being injected and then carried off. Valis brought up a new screen. On it was Simon's picture along with several files of information on him, including school records and medical physicals.
"Intelligent, very intelligent. His physical attributes are above average to. He'll make quite the specimen. With a few minor adjustments, he will be quite the weapon."
One of the monitors started beeping and an image was brought up. It showed two individuals making their way towards the plant. Valis studied the image, grimacing.
"Mr. Harris…he could be quite the kink in my plans. What to do…"
Valis thought for a minute before looking at the screen with Simon's information on it.
"Well it looks like I'll be able to test him sooner rather than later."
He sat down in a leather chair and brought up a map of the city on the screen. He figured with the amount of infected in the surrounding area it would take Drake at least forty minutes to get to the plant. His associate with Simon would take one of the underground routes to the lab. He would be here within ten minutes. Valis put his hands behind his head and leaned back slightly.
"Thirty minutes will be more than enough time to tune up my new weapon. Now I should see how those two in the lower levels are doing."
Drake led Jeanette down several side roads and back alleyways. He wasn't quick to anger or get frustrated but their current situation was less than ideal. Infected had been around every single corner. They had been able to avoid being sighted so far but he doubted they could avoid being sensed much longer. Especially with several of the advanced infected moving around the closer they got to the chemical plant.
"Drake?"
Drake stopped and turned towards Jeanette, she was obviously exhausted. Her face was covered in sweat and she was panting pretty hard. Drake gave a small chuckle as he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"Maybe you should focus on your physical capabilities after we get out of here."
Jeanette gave him a shrewd look, but her features softened when she saw his playful expression.
"Well my physical condition is just fine, but we all can't be perfectly conditioned like you."
Drake helped her straighten up.
"I do try."
They both shared a small laugh, but stopped when the moans of the infected began to echo behind them. Drake took Jeanette's hand.
"Come on…we are almost at the plant."
