Medusa

Chapter eleven

Dean rushed Sam to the hospital. He had no idea what he was going to tell the doctors, he knew they wouldn't believe him if he told them that there was a creature out there that could turn men to stone. He kept glancing over at his brother as he pressed the accelerator to the floor.

"You hang in there Sammy…. just hang in there." He kept repeating over and over…. The thought of losing his brother again terrified him. What would he do without him? He didn't think he could make it without him.

"I'm sorry…." Sam needed Dean to know he didn't want to die and leave him alone, but if he did, he didn't want Dean to die trying to kill the creature by himself. "Don't go back there…by yourself….Get help…..Get Bobby…."

"Don't you worry about me…. You just stay alive till I can end this thing."

Sam was scared….he could barely get a decent breath and it was getting harder and harder to move. But what he feared more then death was what would happen to Dean if he died? Both brothers knew with the line of work they were in that they more then likely would die on the job. And both brothers secretly wished they'd go first, not wanting to live without the other.

Dean flew into the emergency room parking lot and pulled right up to the door. He kept his hand on the horn until he saw nurses and interns rushing out with a litter.

"What's wrong?" One of them asked as he helped Dean put Sam onto the litter.

There was nothing Dean could tell them that they'd understand. And there was nothing they could do for Sam except keep him as comfortable as possible.

"I…I don't know….He's having trouble breathing." Was all he could tell them.

They started to rush the litter into the examination room with Dean right behind them.

"I'm sorry you'll have to wait here." One of the nurses told him.

"Dean…." Sam reached his hand out for his brother.

"I'm right here Sam….I'm right here…" Dean ignored the nurse's order and grabbed his brother's hand and followed him into the room.

Later

Dean stayed close to Sam as they examined him only stepping away from him when he absolutely had to. He watched as the doctor called other doctors into the room and as they exchanged confused looks. He didn't have to be told that the doctors had no clue what they were dealing with. Finally they put an oxygen mask over Sam's face and hooked him up to an IV…it was all they could do.

"What can you do for him?" Dean asked.

"Are you related?" The doctor wasn't about to give out any information except to family members.

"He's my brother."

"Well your brother apparently has something we've never dealt with before, at least not here at this hospital. It appears that his internal organs are slowly solidifying due to some unknown cause. I'm sorry but all we can do is run some tests and see what we can come up with. … For now we can only give him oxygen and fluids so he doesn't dehydrate."

"Just keep him comfortable." Dean knew what he had to do. He had to find the creature and destroy it before his brother died, only then would Sam be spared. He turned to leave the room but stopped when Sam called out for him.

"Where…where're you going?" Sam asked as he pulled up his oxygen mask.

Dean walked over to Sam's bed and leaned down not wanting the doctor to hear him.

"You know what I have to do Sam; it's the only way to end this thing."

"Dean don't…..it's too dangerous….Just stay here….stay with me….." If he didn't make it Sam wanted his brother to be with him, he didn't want to die alone.

Dean blinked back tears; he was torn about what to do. He wanted to stay with Sam but he knew that would mean certain death. But what if he left Sam but couldn't find the creature and Sam died alone? He'd never forgive himself if that happened. But as much as it hurt him he knew he had to leave, it was his brother's only chance.

"Sam you'll be okay…. you're going to be fine. You just hang strong."

"… not worried…about myself…. It's suicide Dean…. Don't go….please…."

Dean swallowed hard….As usual Sam was more worried about him then himself.

"Sorry Sam …. But I got to go…" Dean turned and walked away. It was the hardest thing he ever had to do, to turn his back on his dying brother. But it was the only thing that might save his life.
