Chapter 11
I was shocked to say the least. Rosalie and I had snuck up to Bella's room where Rose had told me all about Bella and Jacob. How when Edward left for her sake she fell in love with Jacob and it was only last year she actually kissed him.
I couldn't believe it. 'And Edward's ok with this?' I frowned and started to peer through Bella's room. She seemed very unbalanced getting herself involved with vampires, werewolves and most of all falling in love with them.
I open her jewlerry box and look through her various necklaces and bracelets. 'Well yeah. I know its weird but he's really in love with her.' I frown again at Rose's reply and spin back around to face her lying on the bed. My gaze catches a small dream catcher on the headboard. It was very simple made out of wood.
'Yeah well Edward has turned very weird.' I sit on the bed and lift the dream catcher into my palm. 'Did Jacob make this for her?' The faint smell of wolf was drifting from the wood.
Rose takes it from my hand and sniffs it. 'Seems so.'
I sigh and put it back in its place. 'But she is in love with Edward right? She's sure in herself that she's making the right decision?'
'She says she loves Jacob but she's in love with Edward.' Rose stands up and closes the jewlerry box I had been rooting through.
I shake my head, 'If she hurts Edward I swear I'll…'
'You'll what?!' The voice came from the doorway. There was Alice looking furiously at the both of us. Her arms were folded and if looks could kill I'd be cremated.
'Alice, don't have a hissy fit. I was just telling Lexi about Bella and Jacob. You have to admit their relationship is a little creepy.' Rose fixes her hair in the mirror. I look over at her then back at Alice.
'Alice I like Bella but it seems to me that she's very confused. Are you sure she's ready to make such a big commitment? I mean she's 18 years old just out of high school. She should be worrying about sneaking into her room drunk at night and missing her period not getting married and turning herself into a vampire! And this business with Jacob is weird. He's a werewolf, he's not safe and I personally don't think he should be at Edward's wedding tomorrow considering his history with Bella.'
Alice shakes her head at me and steps closer to me. 'Lexi you haven't been here you can't just waltz in and start making accusations about a girl you don't even know. She's honest and I believe her when she says she's in love with Edward. She's her own person and she can make her own decisions. She has decided to marry Edward. She has decided to become a vampire and she has decided to keep her best friend werewolf or not in her life. So who are you to judge? This is the night before her wedding. Don't ruin it Lexi, not everything is about you.' Her anger had slipped away but a new emotion of disappointment had settled on her face.
She walks away from me back down stairs to the party. I sigh and look at Rosalie. 'I put my foot in it didn't I?'
She nods and walks over to me giving me a hug. 'It's ok. Alice see's you making judgements before you know Bella and so of course she'd going to defend her. In everyone's eyes Bella is a sweet angel that can do no wrong. The difference with you is that you're from the outside and most of all you'll always be on Edward's side.' I pull away from the embrace.
'So what do I do? Just keep my mouth shut?' She nods and smiles at me softly.
I sigh again. 'Right then. Well I might just go back to the house. If Alice is in a mood with me I'd rather not be here.'
'No! No Lexi don't leave, Alice won't tell Bella what you said and Bella does like you.' Rosalie pleads for me to stay.
I shake my head. 'No, I shouldn't have come. You're right I am always on Edward's side. I'm his friend not Bella's I shouldn't be here.'
Rose kisses my cheek and links her arm through mine as we go down the stairs to the front door. 'Ok Lex, I'll see you later.'
'Yeah see you later.' I step out the front door into the darkness of the night. The moon shines down bright upon the earth. I start to walk back to the house, the only sounds coming from my heels, the only person around myself.
Well so I thought, until I heard the soft padding of feet behind me and slowly the stench of wet dog fills the air. Ugh.
I turn and see Jacob only a few yards away. His lithe body flexing as he runs, the muscles bulging from his shirt. His tanned skin shone in the moonlight and as much as I wanted to kill him I still couldn't deny myself to appreciate such a pleasurable sight.
I stop walking, my distance only a few blocks down from Bella's house. I give Jacob a bored expression as he finally catches up with me. 'What do you want?'
'Why did you leave?' He frowns, his tall muscular frame towering over me.
'Why do you care?' I tilt my head curiously.
He shrugs and shoves his hands into his light wash jean pockets. 'Just wondered why you left.'
I narrow my eyes and lick my lips. 'You just 'wondered'?' I pause and look behind him to see if anyone had followed him and then back at him. 'Huh. Well then Jacob I left because I'm tired.'
He rolls his eyes. 'You're lying.'
I gasp sarcastically in shock, 'And why on earth do you think that?'
He looks at me agitated. 'Because you're a vampire and you don't sleep.'
'Well, aren't you a clever wolf.' I narrow my eyes on him again suspiciously. 'Seems like I'm not the only liar here.'
He looks puzzled at me. 'What do you mean?'
I smirk and shake my head. 'What's your game Jacob?'
He scoffs, 'I have no idea what you're talking about.'
'Oh sweetie don't act all innocent. Stand here and tell me now that you're ok with Bella getting married tomorrow.'
His jaw tenses and he looks at the floor. I knew it. He's in love with her. I mumble, 'And I didn't even have to use compulsion.'
'What?' he asks looking at me.
I roll my eyes. 'Nothing. Go back to the party and stare at the girl you love while she celebrates her engagement to another man.' I turn away from him and head back to the house. I hear no footsteps and figure he's watching me leave. He knows I'm right and he can't do anything about it. He's in love with a girl he can't have. Huh. Seems like we do have something in common.
