Pursuit Force: The White Dog

Chapter 11

(Bolt's POV)

That was… insane. He'd seen the Police do lots of incredible things before but that was truly insane. The Commander had jumped, literally jumped, from the commandeered SUV to the other SUV across heavy traffic at breakneck speed, landed on the hood and then shot the occupants before climbing in through the windshield and taking control of the vehicle; he'd never seen anything like this before!

Suddenly, a mad thought materialised itself in the back of his mind. No, no, that's ridiculous! He'd just briefly imagined taking down the SUV himself. There was no way he could do that without attracting attention and besides, Pursuit Force could handle it. Right? Well… If the Commander did it once, he'd almost certainly try it again. God, what if he misses?! An image of the Commander leaping for the SUV and then meeting a grisly fate with the highway at over 100mph flashed at him and he couldn't help but shudder. No way is that going to happen! Not on my watch! He clambered over Andrew who responded with a "Hey!" and quickly pushed the window control. A blast of cold air disorientated himself for a few seconds but he immediately recovered. He braced himself and then… he jumped. Just as he leapt through the window, he could hear Andrew, barely audible over the slipstream, yell "BOLT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"

(Andrew's POV)

He desperately scanned the road behind him, searching for the body. A bark pulled his attention to alongside the ambulance. Andrew stared blankly for a few seconds before it hit him like a freight train. Bolt was running alongside the ambulance. AT OVER 100mph. Andrew's jaw dropped. "W-w-what are you doing?" Bolt barked once before turning to face the pursuit. And then, he disappeared. Just like that.

However, the sound of a horn blaring, along with the white streak (you'll know what I mean if you've seen the movie), gave him a pretty good idea of where he had gone. Andrew looked forward to find the Off-Roader swerving wildly. "What the hell was that?!" he heard Gage yell over the radio. He picked up the radio and spoke through to Gage: "That was Bolt guys, that was Bolt." The only response Gage could muster was "Goddamn…"

(Bolt's POV)

He weaved in and out of traffic, his gaze fixated on the two vehicles tearing down the Interstate. He moved over to the edge of the road and jumped onto the wall at the side. He did a quick mental calculation to figure out just how he was going to do the takedown he had in mind and mentally sighed in relief. He should have just enough time to stop them.

He skidded to a halt and turned to face the road. He concentrated at the right spot… and fired a Burst-shot of Laser Vision. Just as he had predicted, the shot was true to its mark. The SUV that the Commander was aiming for had driven directly in front of him and the shot had been timed perfectly. The front right tyre burst and the vehicle swerved violently. The driver yanked hard on the steering wheel in a desperate attempt to counteract the action. But his effort was in vain. The SUV flipped over and rolled along the asphalt until it finally came to rest, now a battered wreck of what it once was.

Bolt looked back at the Commander who had by now brought the SUV he had commandeered to a screeching halt, followed closely behind by the Off-Roader and the Ambulance and Forensics Van. Everyone clamoured out and rushed to stop traffic and secure the crime scene. Simon climbed into the back of the van, returning with Police Tape; Andrew brought out a Medical Kit from the Ambulance and ran to check on the suspects in the SUV; Gage followed Simon to stop the traffic; The Commander followed Andrew in case the suspects tried anything and Preach walked over to him and looked down at him, shaking his head. "You trying to steal our jobs, huh?" he said grinning like an idiot.

He sauntered over to the car and nudged Andrew, who looked down at him with a "Yeah?" He looked at both the occupants – two men in Camo Fatigues and Balaclavas – and back at Andrew. "What, these two men?" He nodded. "Well the one in the back is unconscious but alive. He's suffered serious contusions to the upper frontal cranium as well as minor lacerations. That's the extent of the external damage but as for internal injures we'll have to wait and see." It was only then that Andrew realised that Bolt seemed glad that he was alive but was getting bored with how much he sounded like a nerd. "Ahem, yes, err… as for the one in the front; he didn't make it…" Andrew stopped instantly at the sight of Bolt's face. His eyes were wide, ears were flattened, his tail between his legs. "What's wrong?"

(Andrew's POV)

He noticed the change in Bolt's character immediately. From his knowledge of Canines, he could see that he was clearly distraught. "What's wrong? Are you okay?" he asked in a softer tone. Bolt gently eased the front door open and nudged his head against the driver's leg. But Andrew could tell that Bolt's desperate attempt at providing a stimulus was simply to try and provide him with some hope and that he wasn't expecting a response.

Needless to say, he didn't get one.

The Commander moved round to his side and stared at Bolt inquisitively. He turned to Andrew and the look in his eyes spoke "What's wrong with him?" just as loudly as words could. He could only whisper back "You probably saw but Bolt took out that car with a shot of laser-vision and the driver seems to have been killed in the crash, we'll know for sure once we've done an autopsy, but… I think he feels really bad about it."

That was probably an understatement. He'd seen on the CCTV system that little bonding session between Bolt and the Chief- the Chief was always able to have a little bonding session with every officer on the force, he was good that way- but it was probably going to take a lot of belly rubs to make Bolt feel better again.

Bolt seemed to feel pretty bad when he recalled those memories. Andrew couldn't help but think he probably felt even worse now.

For Bolt, today was not going too well.
