Chapter 11 – Lost Memory Part 2
Jack and the others were soaring high above the clouds, on the way to Toothiana's palace that was elevated from the ground. Toothiana's home was located in Southeast Asia, suspended high above clouds to protect it from intruders.
Merida reaches her hands above her, now capable of touching the sky. Hiccup looked back to Merida and smiled, but as he enjoyed every bit of those moments, a blurred memory of his life 250 years ago passed through his mind. He could see pictures of when he let Merida ride Toothless for the very first time. He could remember drawing Merida on the ground as they kept themselves dry from the rain and when he knelt down on one knee and propose to Merida at the Rooftop of the palace, with her parents hiding from behind to see if they approve of his proposal.
"Hey, Hiccup, everything alright?" Merida asked as she tapped the back of Hiccup.
Hiccup returns back into his senses and faces to the red-hair lass, "Huh? What? Oh… Yeah, I'm fine. Just a bit lost in thought."
"Ye know, that could lead us to crashing down," Merida teased with her arms crossed.
Hiccup chuckled as he looked back at his front, "Yeah, I know. Sorry, won't happen again."
Jack suddenly winked his eye when he felt a pinch of pain in his hand.
"Jack, are you okay?" Rapunzel asked, noticing the reaction Jack suddenly had on his face.
"Yeah, yeha, I'm fine! It's just a-…"
Jack looked at the palm of his hand and was surprised to see his wound still open. It seemed like it did not heal.
"That's weird. My wounds usually just go away after 1 day."
"Let me have a look at it," Rapunzel requested as she grabbed for the wounded hand of Jack.
Rapunzel cleared her throat and sang her healing incantation and the wound was immediately healed, but the pain was not going away.
"All better?"
"It still stings."
"Huh… That's weird. Let's have North take a look at it. Are they going to Toothiana's place, too?" Rapunzel asked.
Jack nodded as he gave Rapunzel his signature smirk.
They finally reached Toothiana's palace and landed on one of the marble pillars of the palace; specifically, where Toothiana and the other guardians were staying.
Hiccup and Merida jumped down from Toothless while Rapunzel and Jack gently floated back down. The two baby teeth, then, flew ecstatically towards Jack and Rapunzel, hugging them on the cheek. Jack chuckled as he let Baby Tooth rest under his hood while Rapunzel let Jamie rest on her shoulder.
"Hello, fellas. How is new life?" North asked with a smile.
"It's amazing!" Rapunzel exclaimed as she held her frying pan tight close to her.
North laughed as he looked at Jack, of whom his excitement and curiosity to know more of his past could already be seen in his eyes.
"So, Jack… Are you ready to get back your memories?" North said with his hands on the sides of hips.
Jack smiled and nodded, "Sure am."
"I'm tellin' ya, mate. You've got to give Man in Moon a lot of thanks for what he's done for ya," Bunnymund demanded.
"How come?" Jack said as he smirked at the four.
"You'll understand once you've seen your other memories," Toothiana said.
"So, Jack… Are you ready to see them?" Toothiana asked as she handed over Jack's memory box.
Jack smiled and took the memory box, taking a glimpse on Rapunzel who was smiling at him brightly. Baby tooth, then, placed her little hand on the memory box, and so did Jack. It shined so brightly like the sun and Jack could feel his mind being so occupied with memories. But, as he was trying to remember everything, the memory box lost its light and no memories entered Jack's head.
Toothiana and the others looked at each other confused.
"What happened?" Jack asked.
Toothiana went closer, taking a look on the memory box, "Oh no. This is bad."
"Tooth, what is it?" Bunnymund asked.
Toothiana sighed and looked at Jack disappointedly, "I'm sorry, Jack. It seems like you can't remember them, right now."
"H-how come? What's the problem?!"
"Your memory has a missing piece. Something must be placed here in order for you to see it. I have seen this a lot of times, and have tried to figure out what that thing was… But, I still haven't figured it out until now. I'm so sorry, Jack."
Jack looked below in disappointment. He thought that he would finally find the answers on that very day, but seemed like they still had to wait for a longer time. He looked at the memory box of his past life as Rapunzel came closer to him. She rested her hand on Jack's shoulder as she smiled at him, trying to cheer him up.
Jack could never resist that smile. No matter how down he felt, as long as he saw that bright smile of the love of his life, he would insanely feel much better.
Rapunzel sighed as she took a look at the memory box. She placed her hand on it and took a look on the carvings and all of a sudden, the light from the memory box busted out as strong as the sun with the color of the rays of the moonlight. Rapunzel and Jack were too surprised to say anything. Rapunzel's eyes widened as Jack started to feel memories flowing through his mind, but so was Rapunzel. And instantly, Rapunzel and Jack started to see their blurred memories clearly…
…
Jack was hanging out in the forest with his sister, Emily. He sees the girl with a blurred face, once more with them. But now, her face was starting to become clear. He sees himself with her by the lake. He could hear her sing so softly that it seemed like an angel was singing and saw her so fund of the outdoors.
But, his memory goes way back to when he was a child. He was climbing a tree when he heard such an angelic voice singing. He looked around and saw a young girl with Dark Brown hair picking flowers as she twirled around. He was so relaxed when he heard it that he got lost in thought and fell from the tree. The little girl goes closer to him hurriedly.
"Oww…" Jack moaned as he touched his head.
"You have a wound."
"I'm fine, it's alright," Jack said as he smiled to the little girl.
The little girl put leaves on his wound on the head, which helped ease the pain and make it heal faster.
"Does is still hurt?" the little girl asked.
Jack smiled and chuckled in amazement, "Nope! Whoa, you're awesome!"
The little girl blushed and smiled shyly, "My mom taught it to me. She told me what plants could heal you."
"That's so cool. I'm Jack, by the way… Jackson Overland," Jack said actively.
"I'm Hemera."
"Boy, that's a pretty hard name. Hmm… why don't I just call you Era?"
"O-okay," Era said in a shy way.
Finally, Jack knew the name to the mystery girl in his memories, but he could still seem to not see the face clearly. He let the memories pass through his mind patiently when he heard her angelic voice once again, now as they were teenagers. He was running towards her, of which she was by the bushes of flowers.
"Hey, Era!"
The mysterious girl turned around to face Jack and to Jack's surprise form that memory, he took a closer look at the girl. She had large, green eyes and long, Dark Brown hair which reached the bottom of her ass. Jack was sure of it. He could not be mistaken. It was Rapunzel. Era, the mysterious girl from his memories, was Rapunzel all along. He has known her from the very start. Maybe that was the reason he felt so comfortable around her when he met her as Princess Rapunzel and it felt like that he has known her for so long. Memories of them hanging out together were revealed and as of, revealing that Era was Jack's first love. He has loved Rapunzel from the very start of his first life. It did not start with Princess Rapunzel, after all, but their love has started for so long. They fell inlove with each other but were too afraid to admit anything. They would tell themselves that they would admit what they felt in the right time and in the right moment.
"How 'bout Ice Skating next week?" Jack asked.
"Sure! I miss doing that."
So, next week later, Jack and Emily passed by Era's home, fetching her to go Ice Skating. She knocked on her door, calling her.
"Hey, Era! Come on, we're going Ice Skating!"
But, as the door opened, Era's mother was the one at it.
"I'm sorry, Jack. Hemera hasn't just been herself, lately. She doesn't feel that good. So, maybe she could pass for this one time?"
"Oh, alright. Can we visit her?" Jack requested, which was granted immediately.
Jack and Emily went to Era's room, who was tucked in and a bit pale.
"Oh my God, I am so sorry, Jack. I was the one who suggested to hang out but I'm the one who can't go," Era said annoyed.
"C'mon, Era. What's that sorry for? It's alright! We'll just wait for you to get well then we could go Ice Skating," Jack said proudly.
Era looked at Emily and giggled, "It looks like Emily can't wait any longer. Go on. It's fine."
"Really, Era?! Thank you so much!" Emily said ecstatically.
Era giggled as she nodded.
"You sure you're okay with it?"
"What the heck, Jack? It's not a big deal. Go on, already. I'll go with you next time… Maybe after three days?" Era said.
"Well… Okay. Get well soon, alright?" Jack told Era, making her blush slightly.
Jack and Emily left with smiles on their faces. Jack took one last glance on Era before he completely left the house. She just found her heart jumping in joy after hearing those words from Jack, 'Get well soon'. It was such a small thing but she just sounded so sweet to her ear.
After a few hours, she suddenly felt uneasy. It seemed like her feelings were so heavy and she was worried sick. And the first and only that went inside her mind was Jack. She panted from some kind of fear she felt and exhaustion for no reason, at all. She reached for the small mirror Jack gave her, but it fell to the ground and broke completely. She suddenly felt a cold chill crawl down her spine and could not rest her mind. She kept on thinking of Jack, worried to death that her sickness seemed to get worse because of it.
The next day, Jack went to Era's home and talked to her.
"Era…"
"What is it, Mrs. Overland?"
Jack's mother found it so hard to speak from the grief. She looked at Era's eyes and tears suddenly crawled down Jack's mother's cheek.
"Era… Jack's gone."
"…"
Era blinked her eyes hurriedly and tilted her head, finding what Jack's mother told her hard to believe.
"W-What..?!"
"He's gone, Era. Yesterday, when Emily and him were Ice skating…"
"Wha-… H-how… That's impossible… How did that…"
"Jack saved Emily from falling into the water… But, when he did, the ice he was stepping on… It…" Jack's mother could not continue on what she was saying, it was too much.
Era panted heavily as tears suddenly fell from her eyes like waterfalls. This was something she has never expected to hear. This was something she could not take in completely. It was too hard for her. Her last words to him haunted her. There would never be another next time for her to be with Jack, once again… And what's worse was she has never even told him how she felt towards him.
The family went to his grave and no matter how Era felt, even though she was too weak and drowsy, she went to his grave. She was not able to see him in his last moments, which is why she won't accept it if she wouldn't visit his grave this time. She left a flower on his grave, as the new winter sprite leaned on the tombstone he unknowingly owned.
Era stayed at home and did not even eat properly for weeks. She tried to stay strong and smile as long as she could for Jack, but the pain was too much. And as the days passed, her sickness just got worse. And as each day passing by, she could feel herself getting weaker and weaker. And one night, Era lies down and hugs the cape of Jack. A tear drops on the floor as she stared onto the big, bright moon…
"I'll finally see you again, Jack."
Those were the last words Era said as she closed her eyes forever. She took one last breath as she held the cape of Jack closely to her, and she never woke up again.
The moon watched as she and Jack had the best times of their life eversince. He seemed to grow fund of watching them since the very start, and as he sees Jack sink into the Frozen lake, he felt so sorry for the both of Jack and Era. Life and fate were completely unfair for them. He did not like how everything turned out, most especially seeing Era having such a bad illness. It just broke his heart. Which is why as Jack fell into the lake, he shined down on him to bring him back to life. It was not just because of feeling sorry for him and Era, but The man in the Moon knew that he would be a great guardian, and he would be their ticket to success, one day. And as Era passed away at the brink of sunrise, the moon glowed brightly as the sun shined down upon Era's body. The next day, Era's body was buried near the lake Jack died, for just a few yards away was Era and Jack's favorite place to hang out. Weeks passed and on the center of Era's grave grew a single flower, which on that day the sun let out a single droplet of sunlight, which later landed on the flower and was found by Gothel. And after 50 years, the moon and the sun joined forces as the both shined down on the queen as she gave birth to the Princess Rapunzel, making Rapunzel's hair glow so bright like the sun… Who was later found by Jackson Overland, who was now reborn as Jack Frost.
…
Jack and Rapunzel opened their eyes and panted from exhaustion of seeing the memories pass through their head. Everything finally seemed so clear. Jack finally understood why he was chosen completely and what were those memories trying to tell him in his sleep, and so did Rapunzel. They were never so happy in their life to see each other once more, feeling their hearts beat for each other much more meaningfully than before.
"Jack?"
"Era?"
Jack and Rapunzel embraced each other so tightly. They have longed for each other for so long, unknowingly. They could have never asked for anything else. The main the Moon has given Jack something far greater than a new life and on being a guardian. He has given him back the love of his life from the very start, and made sure that no one else but her would steal back Jack's broken heart. He may fall inlove, but with the same girl he has loved for years back when he was still Jackson Overland. It was everything he ever wanted.
"I can't believe it… All this time, I've known you since the very start," Jack said as tears formed in his eyes.
Rapunzel smiled brightly as tears fell from her eyes. Jack was the only answer to every blurred past she ever had. He answered every question she had in her head about the memories she kept seeing in her mind.
"I'm so glad you're here," Rapunzel said as she caressed Jack's pale cheek.
Jack smiled as he gazed upon Rapunzel's eyes, "I think I like you as Princess Rapunzel better," Jack teased.
Rapunzel giggled and the two faced to the guardians.
"How did you know?" Jack asked.
North smiled at the two of them, "Before Man in Moon chose you, he ordered us to keep a secret eye over you and Rapunzel… Since start."
Jack smiled as he looked at each of the four guardians with surprise and thankful.
Merida and Hiccup chuckled in amazement and proud for their two friends. They have known each other since the start. It was just something to be too good to be true. It seemed like everything was really possible.
Rapunzel and Jack drowned each other in their eyes which hope and love was seen. Jack's head was slowly moving closer to Rapunzel's as he stared at her red lips. Their faces were only 3 inches far from each other and suddenly…
"What a touching reunion."
Jack and the others faced to where the voice was coming from and saw Pitch and Gothel on one of the marble pillars with his army of Fearlings. His arms were tucked behind his back while Gothel's arms were crossed around her chest.
"How's it going, my little flower? Have you enjoyed spending time with the snow boy and the others?"
"Pitch, what do you want?" North yelled.
"Revenge. I am tired of always being defeated by your light," he said, annoyed, "Maybe I want to destroy all of your happiness and take them away."
"And with you fools cannot stop us from what we want. There's no way out."
Jack clenched tight on his staff as he prepared himself for any surprise and so did the other, with Toothless growling, Merida readying her bow and arrow, the others taking position and Rapunzel holding her frying pan with her hair on the other hand.
"Aw, preparing for battle, darlings?" Gothel chuckled.
There was a short silence as the guardians did not even move a muscle.
Pitch looked at them with a deadly glare and raised his hand, "Boo."
Instantly, the horde of Fearlings charged at the guardians. They fought it as good as they can, motivated to not let the last accident happen again. That was too devastating and unbearable, which is why they were serious on protecting each and every one of them from any kind of harm. But, even if the guardians were able to destroy a lot of Fearlings and turn some back into good dreams, Pitch and Gothel smiled wickedly as they watched. This bothered Hiccup and Jack very much that it did not keep them easy. Jack knew that Pitch was up to something which is why he flew around to warn the others.
"Be alert. I think Pitch is up to something," Jack warned as he froze some of the Fearlings.
Jack flew around as Pitch laughed faintly in an evil way.
Jack looked around him, watching over his friends' backs and all of a sudden, it felt like he got paralyzed. His eyes widened as he could not move his body, and pain was covering his whole body. He moaned in pain as he knelt to the ground.
"Jack!" Bunnymund yelled.
The others looked at the winter sprite with shock.
Jack ocnitnued to groan as he heard Pitch's evil laugh, making him look at him with a deadly glare. He looked at his injured hand and saw black sand going inside of it, filling his inside with darkness. He screams in pain as he let go of his staff and tried to stop the black sand from entering him, but he could not stop it.
"Jack!" Rapunzel ran towards Jack with worry.
"Don't come closer!" Jack yelled as he raised his hand, telling Rapunzel to stay where she was. He knew that Pitch has done something to him that could harm her, and he did not want that.
"Don't fight the fear, Jack. It wouldn't be that painful if you accept it," Pitch told him as Gothel laughed evilly at the background.
Everyone gasped as Jack screamed in pain and his hair turned Black and his eyes became golden yellow, just like cat's eyes. His skin was paler than before and his blue sweater lost its brightness, fading into a small pinch of gray. And after his last scream, he froze and did not move an inch.
Rapunzel took one small step towards Jack when he suddenly stood up and faced to the guardians, with his eyes seeming like it showed fire in them.
Jack picked up his staff with was now Black ice covering it and stepping closer to the guardians.
"Jack… What's happening to you?" Rapunzel said fearfully as her eyes widened in shock of what happened to the winter sprite.
Jack pointed his staff to Rapunzel, which made the young girl surprised and did not make her move from her spot.
"Look out!" Merida yelled as she grabbed her and pulled her away, just in time from receiving Jack's attack of Black Ice.
Rapunzel could not believe what just happened. She had no idea how Jack was conjured up by the Darkness. He was the last one any one of them would think to be possessed by the darkness. She was so confused until she remembered the wound Jack received form the fight they had with Pitch when they tried to protect Jamie.
"His wound…" Rapunzel whispered.
Merida looked at Rapunzel confused, "What?"
"That's why he's like this! H-his wound in his hand was infected with the Black Sand of Pitch! T-That's why he's like this!"
Merida and the others faced Jack as he flew towards them.
Toothless flew in front of him to protect his friends while the others destroyed the Fearligns charging at them. They could not even get a moment to think of how to save Jack because of the Fearlings interfering their thoughts.
The Night Fury growled at Jack as he pointed his staff to him and Hiccup.
"Jack, what's wrong?!" Hiccup asked, trying to see if his friend was still in there.
Jack fired at Toothless, who was able to dodge his hit and fought him until the Night Fury was able to get over him, making him unable to move.
"Jack, can you hear me?! If you're still there, don't let the darkness eat you up! You still have to tell us everything!"
Jack refused to listen as he struggled from Toothless' claws.
"You still have to be with Rapunzel!" Hiccup yelled.
Jack screamed as he shot Black Ice on them, hitting Toothless' foot and making him let go on Jack. The winter sprite flew high and screamed as he grabbed his head, feeling the pain that it felt like it was being split in two. He struggled as he started to aim for his friends, but suddenly aimed the shot on Pitch and Gothel. Jack was fighting inside. He did not want to hurt his friends, at all. But, it seemed like the darkness was too powerful that he could not fully control his body. He saw Rapunzel and charged at her. He flew as fast as the speed of light to Rapunzel and grabbed her by the neck.
Rapunzel was struggling as her feet tried to reach for the ground. She tried to catch some air but was so difficult in her situation right now.
"Jack… Please… Don't give in… To the dark…ness…"
Rapunzel loses her consciousness as Jack let go, fighting the darkness that covered him entirely. He could see what he was doing to the girl he loved, and he could not bear it. He clenched his head and screamed in pain. He was trying to keep himself down, so he tried to remember every happy memories he had remembered and the joy he felt when he saw Rapunzel again, and his friends. His eyes returned to the color Blue as he still fought the darkness left inside of him.
Bunnymund and North fought the Fearlings charging at Tooth. There just too many of them that every side they looked at, there was a new Fearling in front of them. Gothel jumped down from where she and Pitch watched and went up close to Toothiana, sneakingly, as Bunnymund was carried by a Fearling and North was pushed away from Toothiana.
"Bunny! North!" Toothiana screamed as she tried to fly towards them, but before she could even fly away from her spot, her eyes widened in shock as she panted. She turns her head and sees Gothel behind her, giving her off an evil grin.
The other guardians faced to Toothiana and gasped in horror.
"TOOTH!" Bunnymund screamed.
Toothiana faced to Gothel, which revealed Gothel holding her dagger, which was stabbed into Toothiana's side. Blodd dripped on the ground as she looked shocked and mortified from what just happened. Jack struggled to go near Tooth to save her, but he could feel the darkness possessing him once more as his anger and rage grew. Gothel laughed evily as she stared at Toothiana, who fell to the ground and felt the wind going stronger.
"Enjoy your last moments, Fairy," Gothel laughed as she walked farther from them.
Toothiana panted and saw the small tornado cover her up. She could feel herself drifting away and took one last glance at the others. She looked at Bunnymund who was shocked and mortified of what had just happened. She smiled one last time and the wind covered her completely. And as the wind calmed down and the tornado vanished, Toothiana was nowhere to be found. And all that was left from Toothiana was a single feather.
"No!" Bunnymund could not take it anymore. Gothel and Pitch were going too far.
The red-hair lass and Easter Bunny charged at Gothel as she walked away. She threw tons of arrows at her while bunnymund threw his boomerang, but the witch immediately broke all of those arrows and sent the boomerang to another direction with one swish of her hands, showing the darkness covering her.
The other guardians did not expect Gothel and Pitch to be this strong. They have, indeed, improved.
Jack couldn't believe it. The same tragedy has happened again. He screamed in rage and the wind blew stronger. Jack flew high to the place Pitch and Gothel was watching them and pointed his staff to them. His right eye was golden yellow as the other was blue. His sweater seemed to return to its normal color but his hair was still black. He charged at Pitch and Gothel and screamed as he let out all of his power that was mixed with Ice and Darkness. Pitch shook his head and shielded him and Gothel from the attack, but the shield was immediately broken when Jack's Ice turned back to normal and shined brighter than ever that is got out of control and also almost hit the other guardians. Hiccup and the others took cover as Gothel and Pitch disappeared, earning a few hits and injuries from Jack's last attack.
Rapunzel rushed up to Jack and hugged him tightly, making sure that he would not escape her grasp.
"Jack, please, stop!"
Jack suddenly paused and felt the light coming from the young lady.
Rapunzel's tears fell onto Jack as he felt the darkness leaving him and finally regaining back the control of his body. He knelt down and started to tear up as he suddenly lost consciousness.
Hiccup and Merida went closer to Jack to help him get onto Toothless.
Bunnymund went closer to Tooth's last place and picked up the feather, which was all that was left from her. He held a tight grip on it and clenched it at his heart. He bowed and started to tear up as Sandy and North patted him on his shoulders. Bunnymund faced to them and saw how devastated and mortified they were for an incident like this to happen again.
The moon shined on them with gloom and sadness as they returned back to North's workshop.
