I was pacing up and down the beach, waiting for Kyle. After our... interesting conversation about my mother the night before, Kyle had asked me out on an official date. A date which he was late for. I paused and used my hand to shield my eyes, squinting to look for him. Typical Kyle. Couldn't even be on time for something he planned.
"Hey." I turned around to see him standing there, in swim trunks and a t-shirt, aviators on and a surf board in one arm.
"Hey?" I repeated incredulously. "You're 10 minutes late and all you have to say is hey?" Instead of replying, he handed me a bouquet of lilies. My anger vanished in a second and I kissed him happily.
"They're so pretty! Thank you." He bowed deeply and exaggeratedly.
"Of course my lady." He gestured to his board. "Wanna go out for a swim?"
"Kurt!" Finn exclaimed, pressing the phone to his ear.
"Yes Finn?" Kurt's tone was somewhat exasperated, as if he'd been doing many important things and Finn was another needless distraction.
"Eve. Went out. On a date. With a boy." Finn listened to his slightly younger brother's gasp of delight.
"Seriously? That's marvelous! Tell her to call me as soon as she gets home!"
"This is serious Kurt! I don't even know who it is, just some guy she said she was going out with. I don't know where she went or when she'll be back-"
"You're worrying needlessly." Kurt clucked, making Finn blush. "Eve can take care of herself. Besides, you and Rachel were sneaking off together almost our entire high school careers. Do you recall Nationals in New York?"
"That's not the same!" Finn argued impatiently. He could feel Kurt rolling his eyes.
"Sure. Tell yourself that. Now I have to go, don't forget to tell Eve to call me!"
"Kyle!" I shrieked. "Put me down!" As expected, he did not listen to me, and instead tossed me into the ocean. Everything around me was green and salty. I pushed off the ground and popped back up to the surface. Kyle was standing in front of me, excitement evident in his smug expression.
"How'd that fresh salt water feel?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I don't know. You tell me." I replied, and shoved him under water. He came up a few seconds later, coughing and spluttering. He saw my smirk and smiled devilishly.
"You are so done now Berry!" He shouted and began walking towards me.
"No!" I cried. "Get back!" I started to paddle away, but he was faster and grabbed my waist.
"Nice try." He laughed and pulled me so I was facing him, then he kissed me, and most of the world melted away. Then, he pulled away and pushed me under water.
"Kyle!" I shouted as I surfaced and saw him running down the beach. "Get back here!" I got out of the water and chased him.
"Not a chance!" When I finally caught up with him, he pulled me on top of him and we were lying on the beach. I stared down into his dark brown eyes.
"I really hate you, you know." I said, biting back a smile. He smiled brightly.
"Yeah, I know."
"Finn! I'm home!" I called stepping into our apartment. My dad ran into the hallway and threw his arms around me.
"Thank god you're home! I thought something really bad happened!" I looked up at him in confusion.
"Why would you think that?" Finn pulled away and glared down at me.
"You left for the whole day and never called! Anything could have happened! Where were you, anyway?" I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms.
"Acting like my mom much? I went to the beach with Kyle and my phone died." Finn went red faced.
"That's no excuse. You find a phone and call me. Understood?"
"Yeah, whatever." I walked off to my room.
"Kurt wants you to call him." Finn yelled to me. I raised a hand and waved in acknowledgement. I plugged my phone into its charger in my wall and picked up one of the home phones to call my mother's best friend.
"Hello?"
"Hey Kurt."
"Eve!" Glee was evident in his voice. "My darling! How's life in San Fran?" I smiled and lay down on my bed.
"Life's life. As usual. How's New York? My mom getting along without me?"
"Yes. She's throwing herself into a new play." I smiled to myself.
"What's she gonna be in now?"
"High Society. But that's not the conversation right now. I want you to tell me all about this BOYFRIEND!" I chuckled at his enthusiasm.
"I think you know him. You payed him to pick me up at the airport." Kurt audibly gasped.
"Puckerman? Honestly! That little troublemaker with the smart mouth. You could do so much better child!" I laughed out loud.
"Troublemaker with a smart mouth? Sounds a bit like someone else we know. Someone you're talking to one the phone right now." I could imagine Kurt pursing his lips.
"Point taken." There was talking in the background. Kurt responded. "I'm sorry baby, but I have to go. There's urgent business I have to take care of.
"Okay. I love you Kurt."
"I love you too angel. Talk to you soon." We both hung up and I put the phone on its cradle. I stretched out and sighed. Finally, I could just relax, lie down on bed and not have to-
"Eve. You in there?" Finn knocked on my door and called to me. I groaned and climbed off my bed.
"One second." I walked over and opened up the door. Finn stood on the other side, as expected.
"Can I come in?" He asked.
"Sure." He sat down on the edge of my bed and patted the spot next to him.
"We need to talk." I sighed, and sat down.
"I know I should have called. I'm sorry. And I'm sorry for being rude to you before." Finn shrugged.
"That's okay. I shouldn't have yelled at you. But that's not why I came in here." I pulled my legs into Indian position.
"Alright, shoot."
"So, we have to start talking about your ball."
"Oh. Right. What do you need to know?" Finn shrugged again.
"We need to think up a theme. And find a place. And you've got to get a dress." I grabbed a notebook from my bedside table and began writing everything down.
"Alright. I'll start figuring that stuff out."
"Good." Finn stood up and kissed me on the forehead. "Night Eve."
"Good night." Finn closed the door behind him. "Dad."
