Eventually Anna did make it for dinner. Elsa, happy as she was to see the redhead, was concerned that something would go terribly wrong with the evening. Elsa seemed to have bad luck all around her lately.
Elsa showed Anna through the kitchen. Luscious aromas filled their noses as they danced around the room. The girls stopped. "What's that smell?" Anna exclaimed. They both took a big whiff. "Chocolate!" they said in happy unison. They tried to steal some of the dessert but the cooks shoved them out of the kitchen, they'd have to wait.
It wasn't exactly a fancy dinner. Thank God too, 'cause Elsa didn't feel like getting all dressed up, and she especially didn't want to make Anna go through that struggle again. Elsa slipped on a nice pair of leather boots, some black jeans, and a t-shirt. She checked herself out in the mirror (three times) before she decided she was satisfied. Anna on the other hand was in combat boots, torn blue jeans, and a hoodie. It was nice to drop the formality.
The girls were placed on opposite sides at the table, toward the very end. Elsa's uncle sat at the head of the table, filling the void between the two. This night could have gone a million different ways. Yet, for some unknown reason, the universe chose to start it with a question.
"So Anna" Duke asked, "do you live with your parents?"
Anyone could have easily seen that a sensitive topic had been chosen. Anna bit her lip and clenched her fists. She swallowed what she was eating and worked out a smile. "No… Mr. Sir…uhm… both my parents are dead." The room was silent for a moment. Duke cleared his throat before he spoke again. "Oh? How'd that happen?" OH MY GOD REALLY? Elsa thought. Can you be any more rude? Please. Elsa spoke out before Anna had the chance."It's alright Anna, you don't have to answer that…" Anna shook her head. "No. No, it's fine. They both overdosed." Duke fixed his eyes on the girl. He was clearly evaluating her, almost as if he was trying to tell if Anna would cause Elsa to go down the same path her parents did. "On what?" He said.
"Uncle!" Elsa yelled. Her brows clenched, fierce as a hawk staring down its prey. Anna remained still, twirling her fork through her food. The room flooded in silence once again. Duke stared blankly across the table, "I'm sorry. That was out of line". Anna shook her head. "Meth…" she said, "it was meth, and I really don't care if we discuss it or not. They didn't act like parents when I was growing up so who gives a shit really…" Anna 's voice was filled with passion but her eyes glared at her food. Elsa could feel Anna's legs shaking under the table. Elsa stood up from her chair, "we're going to excuse ourselves". Anna tried to argue, sternly reminding Elsa they were at dinner, however Duke knew he had crossed a line and for that he let the girls go.
Elsa dragged Anna out of the dinning room, through the halls, and down the stairs to her room. They didn't speak a word during their little walk. Elsa dragged the redhead in her room and shoved her on the bed. "No!" the blonde yelled.
Anna observed Elsa, puzzled. "No?"
"I understand," Elsa began, "that growing up can be god damn awful. We of all people know this. But you can't just say you don't give a shit about your parents!"
Anna didn't move from the spot that she had been violently shoved in. She just flared her nostrils and gave Elsa an exaggerated eye roll. "I don't blame them for the things they did. They needed the high; I get that. Sometimes people will do crazy things to be able to feel again Elsa… I just wish they hadn't brought me in to it. I put so much more pressure on them, they would've just been better off without having me."
"You… You wish you weren't alive?"
"I mean why not?" Anna responded. "I seem to be in this loop. I'm making all the same mistakes they are. I didn't learn any different. I might've well just had died with them."
Again, silence.
"You want to feel something that bad?" Elsa said.
Anna met Elsa's eyes. "I want to feel anything at this point…"
Elsa didn't hesitate. The blonde walked towards Anna, grabbed the girl's shirt and yanked her up. She lifted her hand and planted a clean smack across Anna's face. "I give a shit that you're here." She said. Not seconds after Elsa let her lips lean forward and connect to Anna's. The kiss lasted a total of two seconds. Anna frozen in to place, Elsa broke the kiss and stared into the redhead's eyes. "Fucking feel that."
The blonde let go of Anna's shirt and darted out of the room. Leaving a stunned Anna standing alone.
