Chapter Eleven: With Each Other
Dusk smirks as the ring of smoke hit near her face yet again. She would deal with that later, for now; she had her eyes on the prize. "Pocket rockets bitches hand that shit over." She said kicking her booted feet on top of the table.
Rows of curse words streamed the underground poker game as the thugs and sluts look to Dusk with hate. She counted the money in her hand, and is thrilled when she comes on top with three hundred dollars.
"See you all next week." She smirks going to the bouncer that was in charge of making sure no stealing, stabbing, or murders went down, and he lets the iron door open.
Her boots clack down on the pavement and the sounds of dripping water echo underneath the underground tunnels. These were famous around in New York for when famous musicians and actors had to escape after a performance. Dusk shook her head at the thought of musicians. It has been officially a week since she had quit the band, and she wasn't missing it. Thorn could have gone and fucked herself for all she knew. Luna, she didn't know what to think about her other-her only- sister. She grips the ladder and pushes the sewage drain open leading to the New York streets. Picking herself out of the hole, she looks around for the crosswalk, but decides against it, and just jaywalks. Reaching the streets, she stops and plucks out a five out of her winnings and pays for a hot dog from the Central Park stand. She walks a couple of blocks, and throws away the hot dog wrapper. Under no circumstances would she litter though. She may not be a Hex Girl anymore, but she still believed for what they stood for. After mindlessly walking around, she sighs and takes a seat on a bench. She didn't think she would be so lonely, but after a week of talking to Jim, the local hobo near the park, she was desperate for some girl talk. Her finger slides to Luna's number, and she almost dials it, but stops herself as she rubs her cheek. The bruising had gone down, but Thorn had given her a wicked punch that was black and blue before. She shoves her phone back into her boot, and stares at the sky while flipping her pocket knife she had purchased from a store in Virginia.
"You took my spot." A voice called, and Dusk looks up to see a man with a black hood with Jack the Pumpkin King. She lived for him.
A smirk danced on her lips as she places her feet on the bench leaving her body exposed and crossed her arms. His gaze didn't fathom from her smoke-ringed eyes. "Yeah? And where is your name on it?" She questions cocking her head to the side.
A sly smile crosses his lips as he bends near her head. "It's here." He whispers, his hot breath near her ear.
"You got your point, big boy, "she replies moving her feet so he can sit, "I'm Dusk." She says with another killer smirk.
"I'm Karl." He says holding out his hand, and she accepts the shake.
"What brings you to the fabulous state of robbers and skanks?" He says, leaning his head on his hands and watches a woman yank her dog across the street. Dusk wants to kick her ass for doing that.
"I left my band, and I'm here now until I can figure what I'm going to do." She explains, and wonders why in the hell she is telling this stranger her life story.
"You're in a band?" Karl asks with amused interest.
"I was in a band." She snaps, and now wonders why she was correcting him. She didn't care about anyone.
"I'm sorry, but what band were you in?" Karl asks pulling his hoodie off and handing it to the shaking Dusk from the New York chill.
"I don't need your help, but I was in the Hex Girls." She said not bothering to take the hoodie, so he sets it next to them.
"You were? I saw you in concert a couple of weeks ago. You girls were on fire."
She takes the hoodie after he says that, and puts it on feeling the warmth of his body. "Thanks."
"You're welcome. Do you have a place to stay?" He asks standing up, and helps her to her feet.
She gives him one of her man eater smiles and tugs on her pigtails. "Thanks, but I gotta go. See you around." She says walking away stuffing her hands in the pocket, and frowns when she feels something in it. Opening it, she sees a small piece of paper with a number on it. She turns to talk to him some more, but he is gone, and she puts it back into place and smiles. Dusk could only manage a shitty, and not to mention sketchy, looking motel for the night. Unlocking the door to her room, she can't help but wonder who lived in here last. Did that creepy hobo? No, he couldn't afford any sorts of luxury. Sighing once, she places her stuff on the table, and kicks off her shoes. Leaning back on the bed she closes her eyes, and searches for any sort of interesting future. Nothing.
"Son of a bitch!" She groans and goes to the shower turning it on, and swears again when it comes out steaming hot or icy cold. In that moment, Dusk wishes nothing more to be in her bands van with her own damn shower, her own damn bed, and her own damn life again.
Her skin is as red as a lobster when she emerges from the shower, and shoves her small body under the covers. Her cell phone blares next to her, and she turns down the volume before checking her text message.
Luna: Hey Dusk...how are you?
She stares at it for awhile weighing her options on whether or not to reply to her sister. She presses the delete button and turns out the lights. The next day she calls Karl, and they meet up in Times Square. Dusk tries to not let her memories fade when her and her sisters were here, but Dusk sees them everywhere. The two black clothed adults pick at the blue cotton candy in their hands while sharing a laugh. Dusk stops him for a moment, and turns her attention to the television near the old shop.
In other words, the rock and punk look has taken a turn. Many people don't know what to think with the rise and fall of the webs most popular bands. Coming in just a week the Vampire Rock Music Festival will be taken in no other place but Sydney Australia. Back to the media social network, it seems fans are torn between two rivaling acts. They are known as the Eco-Goths of OakHaven, The Hex Girls, and New Jerseys home punk girls The Shadownights. Last week the two bands were spotted off the side of New York's finest hotel, and things were heating up quickly. Dusk watched as their fight played on, and couldn't help but feel a since of pride at how her, Thorn, and Luna all worked together to teach those bitches a lesson. Rumors has surfaced the The Hex Girls lead and only drummer had quit the band due to unknown circumstances. Will the rising band continue to play, or will there be a new age of punk for future generations? This is Miranda Stewart from CNN News over and out.
"What the hell? Where do they get this information?" Dusk asked to no one in particular. She raised her sunglasses to look up at Karl who gave a shrug.
"You probably had some dedicated followers who knew your every move." She tried not to think about how he used the past tense instead of the present.
Dusk had to take a deep breath when he said that. He didn't know the full truth of that statement. They had a dedicated follower, but they didn't want him anywhere near him.
"What should we do now?" Dusk asks Karl with a grin, and he throws his head back and laughs.
"Let's go cause some mischief." He replies taking her hand, and running into New York.
A row of coughs erupted from the small bathroom, and James and Luna just look at each other. Thorn comes out of the bathroom with blurred, red eyes, and nearly no makeup. Luna hasn't seen Thorn this bad since she thought her mother was alive on her last birthday when she had received an unknown birthday card. She drank for days on end when her search came up with no results.
"I know you don't want to hear it, but-"
"You're right Luna I don't want to hear it." Thorn says, her bare feet making too much sound for her own weight, and her clothes hang off her petite frame. Eyeing her bed, she wants to climb up there, but in her drunken state, decides to lie on the floor. No one has touched Dusk's old bed since she left.
"Well you need to. Thorn, you haven't touched any music, and the concert is in a week. Daddy has been calling nonstop since he heard of the news. You need to get your act together." Luna says sitting next to her sister.
Thorn says nothing, but takes another sip of her drink.
Fed up with Thorn, Luna takes the whiskey out of Thorn's hand, and takes a small sip. "This will be mine now," She says before turning to James, "I will finish this off, and you can deal with her." Luna says before going up to the drivers' seat and shutting the door.
James walks over to Thorn and kneels in front of her. Even drunk, she's beautiful to him, and he hates to see her damage herself over this. "Your sister is right, baby girl."
"I don't give a fuck." Thorn replies turning on her side so her back was to him.
James runs his hand through her hair. It's greasy, and she reeks of alcohol. Turning her to him, he grabs her chin in his hand, and forces her to look into his eyes.
"You need to get the fuck up, and take care of yourself. I'm not telling you again." He says and his own voice shocks him.
He can tell by her look she is surprised too. He has never raised his voice to her, or shown the least bit controlling since the institution. It always worried him she would go back to her vulnerable state. She rips her face away from him and turns back onto her side. She has fire alright, but that fire is pissing James off to a point where he doesn't give a damn about her wants. He will do what he has to go get her better.
"Luna, don't you get drunk on me to. I need you." James hollers, and Luna comes in with a smile.
"You rang?" She says with a laugh covering her mouth with her gloved hand.
"Don't get sassy with me." He says playfully as she leans back into the beanie bag chair they got last Easter.
"Oh, I won't. Just do what you have to do." Luna says, and he really looks at the young woman. She is damn smart to understand his feelings although he never said them out loud. The double meaning in her words gives him the permission he needs.
"I'm sorry baby girl, but this is for your own good." He says before picking up Thorn and throwing her over his shoulder.
His movements catch her off guard, and he knows it's too late for her to do any good. She kicks and pounds on her back, but he is too strong for her. When she finally realizes this she uses her words, and her tongue is even worse when she's drunk. A row of curse words is thrown at both him and Luna.
"Shut up, baby girl." He mutters ducking a punch she tries to throw, but her aim is way off. He locks the door, and turns on the faucet to the shower.
"Fuck you, you motherfucker! Is this how you get girls? Fucking, throw them over your god damn shoulder? Fuck you, you fuck you! Does it make you feel like a fucking man touching my ass like this?" She hisses, and he nearly drops her in the tub, but he would never do that.
When she is fully in the tub, she cringes at the contact of water, and tries to flee the tub. At the end of his straw, unlocks the door and calls for Luna. He then removes his socks, rolls up his pants, and steps on either side of her body holding her down. Luna comes in and nearly falls to the floor with laughter at her poor sisters attempt to fight James off. He is a well built man.
"Will you bathe her please?" James asks, pleading with her. He is very aware of Thorn's lack of clothing, and he could never bring himself to touch her without her permission.
"I got this. Thorn is a little bitch sometimes, but then again we all are." Luna says sitting on the side of the tub, pours soap onto a cloth, and begins washing Thorn's skin.
"Do you think Dusk will come back? I saw the news this morning." James says before getting a face full of water. He grabs Thorn's hands and pins them above her head.
"I did, but I don't see how people knew about that. Hell, we are still coping about it, and the publicity is like a pack of rabid dogs." She is silent although the room is very loud. "I hope Dusk will come back. Their fight was really bad James, but I can't lose them." Luna says with tears in her eyes.
He keeps one hand on Thorn, and wraps the other around Luna. "I promise you everything will be better again." She smiles at him, and she leaves the bathroom satisfied with a clean Thorn.
He makes her try and brush her teeth, but quickly does it himself. Her constantly fighting him has worn her out, and the alcohol hasn't help. In the end, her body gives out, and she is in a deep sleep. He lays her in her bed before stroking her hair, and kissing her cheek. He goes to his own bed in the other room-his drivers' seat makes a cozy bed- and Luna knocks once. He lets her in with no hesitation.
"You would be really good for her you know that?" She says finally as she leans her had onto her elbows.
James says nothing, but nods slightly. "You should also know that you are the most important person in this group. You're like the glue, and that can never be taken away. It's there forever, and I'm really happy I was able to meet a woman like you. You are one hell of a woman, Luna." James says with full candor, and she smiles at him before going to her own bed for a good nights sleep.
Dusk couldn't remember the last time she had, had so much fun. Karl and her had spent the day spray painting abandon buildings, and riding around in a cheap cab all night. Now, he has decided to take her to an actual casino where he knew it was legal. They played Blackjack together, and won two-hundred dollars.
"We are badass!" Dusk says once they come out of the casino with photo strips, and money in their hands.
"I couldn't agree more." He says once they reach her door.
"Goodnight." She finally says while smiling.
"Goodnight." He says before as he kisses her cheek.
That night, Dusk had no nightmares. A rap on the door awakes Dusk from her slumber, and she yells to the empty air. Throwing on Karl's sweatshirt, she makes her way to her hotel, and opens it to find James in the doorway.
"What the hell are you doing here?" She yells trying to close the door on him, but his foot stops it.
"And a good morning to you, Dusk, but I don't have time for any shit. Luna is in trouble now get your ass moving." He says with no patience in his voice, and she wonders when he grew a pair?
"Can I at least change?"
"Grab your stuff and let's go." He says moving quickly to the cab.
She waits no time and grabbing her belongings and meeting him in the cab.
"What is this all about?" She asks suddenly worried about her sister.
"She just couldn't take it anymore. Thorn stared drinking heavily again, and with you leaving she just snapped."
"Thorn started to drink again? Why didn't anyone stop her? What do you mean snapped?" Dusk asks with a million more questions racing through her mind.
"I mean she tried to commit suicide, Dusk. She's already tried it, and she locked the airport bathroom so no one could watch her finalize it." James explains giving directions to the man.
"That isn't like Luna." Dusk argues not believing a word of it.
"It wasn't like you to quit the band." James retorts.
Dusk was quiet the whole trip until he directed her on where Luna was. She pushes her way into the bathroom.
"Luna? Luna where are you?" She calls before hearing sounds of yells.
"What the hell are you doing in here?" Dusk asks Thorn as she turns and looks surprised.
"Why the hell are you here?" Thorn yells back, and Dusk can already tell Thorn was on a wicked hangover.
"I asked you first." Dusk replies.
Thorn just flips her off. "James locked me fucking in. James open the fucking door!" Thorn yells and bangs on the door with her heel.
"I thought you said Luna committed suicide!" Dusk yells back going on the other side of the door and beats on it.
"Are you an idiot?" Thorn asks glaring at Dusk.
"You two are not coming out until you settle this fight." Luna's voice rings out, and Dusk in enraged.
"Fucking let us out!" She screams, but no one replies.
"Just tell me you are sorry and we can get the hell out." Dusk says leaning on the wall.
"Me? You fucking say you are sorry." Thorn says taking a seat in the sink. She wouldn't sit on the floor if her life depended on it.
"You fucking punched me!"
"You fucking talked shit about my mom! You know what that does to me!" Thorn yells, and deep down, Dusk knew she was wrong to go there, but right now, she wouldn't admit it.
"Get the fuck over it, Thorn." Dusk says coldly before turning her attention to the door.
"I will never get the fuck over it you bitch." Thorn says while grabbing Dusk's head and slamming it into the door.
Stunned, Dusk almost didn't know what hit her, but she just saw Thorn standing there. She backhanded Thorn so hard she thought she would break something in her face, but she only stumbled back. She continues, and pushes Thorn into a wall before punching her in her stomach, and kicks her heels out from under her, and she falls to the floor. She lays unmoving, and Dusk goes to see if she really did truly hurt her.
"Fuck..." She whispers before hitting Dusk's knee making her off balance, and Thorn uses this to knock Dusk to the ground along with her. Thorn gets on top of Dusk, and hits her over until Dusk flips Thorn over her and onto her back.
James and Luna finally hear the banging, and open the door to see Thorn and Dusk in a death match.
"Shit!" Luna says running over to them, but not trying to get hit.
"Yeah chick fight! Take your clothes off!" A bystander screams, and James shuts the door before a crowd can appear.
Luna is tired of this, and uses her abilities to make them feel the worst pain even though it hurts her to. Boiling of the blood could be a useful ability. They both stop fighting, and silently scream as tears run down both of their faces. Luna nods before holding down Dusk, and James holds down Thorn.
"We are supposed to be sister, but you two let some stupid argument get in between us. We were never supposed to let anything come between us. You two want us to be successful and alive right? Well, we sure as hell can't do that separate. We are stronger together, and we all know it. We would have never survived that institute alone, but we did it together. We are sisters no matter what. Don't you guys want that too?" Luna asks as Thorn and Dusk finally look at each other. No one says a word, but only the echo of heartbeats can be heard. Luna almost missed it, but saw the movement of Dusk's head turn into a nod for yes.
"I'm so sorry, Thorn." Dusk whispers and clutches the dark-haired girl. "I just can't lose either of you. I'm so scared to lose you to him." She sobs and meets her sisters tear stricken face to.
"I'm sorry as well. We will never let him take us down we are too strong for that" Thorn says before Luna joins in the hug.
James watches the sisters and smiles. They would get through this like they always did. With each other.
