Here's another chapter for you all :) I'm not entirely happy with it but I hope you'll all still enjoy it :)
Lucy sat in the passenger seat of Adam's car staring out of the window as they drove along the road. She watched the rain drops roll down, having little bets in her head of which one would reach the bottom first. Seeing the rain outside made Lucy realise how cold she should be, but she wasn't her hands were clammy and her face felt hot. The two rain drops she was watching finally hit the bottom of the window and disappeared.
Lucy glanced over at the clock on the dash-board 19:32, using her fingers to count the difference, like her Dad had taught her, she silently worked out that it was 7:32. Which meant she'd be snuggled up in bed in less than thirty minutes and for once she couldn't wait to rest her head on her pillow and pull her duvet up over her head and hopefully get lost into dreamland. Today hadn't gone well and the trip to the cinema with Adam had gone even worse. She couldn't believe that he'd caught her shouting out in her sleep and now he expected an explanation. Looking up, she saw that Adam was focused on the road, he was waiting for her to open up to him and she knew that, but what was she meant to say?
Staring back out of the window, Lucy noticed that they were now passing her school and even though she knew that Madison wasn't going to be there she still felt herself sinking down into her seat. Another glance at the clock, 19:35, Lucy worked out that it took roughly 10 minutes to get from her school to her house. Ten minutes stuck in the car with Adam. Pulling her sleeves over her sweaty hands, she turned in her seat to face her uncle. "Adam..."
"Yeah?" Adam said with a smile.
"I guess I should tell you what's going on"
"Only if you want to, Luce, but as I said before you can trust me"
Lucy nodded as she fiddled with her sleeves "You remember Madison?"
"Madison? The girl from the car park?"
Lucy again nodded "Yeah, her"
"Has she said something?"
Lucy shrugged "Kind off"
"Kind off?"
"I don't know, I... I've changed my mind"
"What?"
"I don't want to talk about it" Lucy said stubbornly as she turned back to the window.
Adam sighed and carried on the drive back to the Messer's. He'd got so close and he'd lost her at the last second. He knew talking to her in the car was a bad idea, he couldn't give her his full attention while he was in the car. He also knew that Lucy was only here for another couple of days before she took off to Coney island with Danny and Lindsay for the weekend. He tried to figure out in his head a time when he could have a chat with Lucy before she went away but it seemed that when he was free she was at school and when she was free he was at work.
"Dad's home" Lucy smiled as they drove along her street.
"You knew he would be" Adam replied.
"I know... but sometimes he gets called into work"
"Ma... I mean your Uncle Mac tries not to do that too much with your Mum and Dad as he knows how important it is for them to spend time with you as well as work"
"I won't get to spend much time with him now" Lucy sighed.
"Why not?" Adam asked as he parked in front of the house.
"Cos it's nearly my bed time"
"Oh, I'm sure your Dad will let you stay up a little bit with him, I bet he's missed you today"
"I've missed him too" Lucy replied as she undid her seat belt.
Adam undid his own seat belt and then getting out of the car, he went round and undid Lucy's door "There you go, My lady"
Lucy giggled and got out of the car "You don't need to do that, Adam"
"Oh I know, but it makes you laugh and I love hearing your little laugh"
The two of them walked up the path and Lucy reached up and pressed the door bell. "Daddy, it's me" she called through the door.
"Is that my Lucy-girl?" Danny called back from the other side. As he opened the door, Lucy flung herself towards him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "I'm guessing someone missed me"
Adam laughed "I think so"
"I missed you too, Luce" Danny said as he bent over and kissed the top of Lucy's head. "Can you go get your jammies on sweetie and then we can make some hot chocolate and have a story, what do you think?"
Lucy nodded and untangled herself from her Father. "I'll be back soon" Kicking off her shoes, she mad her way over to the stairs. Stopping, she quickly spun around and ran back over to the front door "Thank you, Adam" she smiled as she hugged her Uncle.
"Oh that's okay" Adam replied. He was slightly taken back but the unexpected gesture from Lucy but he cuddled her back. He'd missed her cuddles today, normally at the cinema she'd end up resting her head on his shoulder or she would sit in her chair and rest her legs over his. Today she's sat in her own seat, cuddling her legs to her chest. Adam had put it all down the fact that he'd found out about her little 'secret' and so had expected her to be distant with him. So now he wondered if this cuddle was genuine or to paint a nice picture in front of Danny? No, Adam told himself, Lucy was a polite, respectful girl and this thank you and cuddle would most definitely be genuine.
"I'll see you soon, Adam" Lucy said as she pulled away and made her way upstairs to her room.
"Yeah, bye bye" Adam replied with a little wave.
"How was she today?" Danny asked once Lucy had disappeared upstairs.
"Quiet" Adam replied honestly. He didn't want to lie to Danny, but he still couldn't tell him the truth, not yet anyway. "I think she was just tired from school"
"Yeah, she's had a busy week. I'm sure the break at the weekend will help her though"
"She's looking forward to that, told me how you win all the teddys for her in the machines"
"Ah I do, Learnt from the best there, didn't I?"
Adam blushed slightly but inside he was pleased to get a compliment from Danny. "I'm not the best"
"Ah, well you're better than me"
"It's just a stupid game though, I mean you are better at lots more cooler stuff like being around dead bodies an..." Adam drifted off once he realised how ridiculous he sounded.
Danny gave him a smile "Look, I better get little lady sorted for bed, but I'll catch you tomorrow at work?"
Adam nodded "Yeah see you then, tell Linds I said hello"
"Will do and thanks for today, I think she had a great time"
"It's no problem" Adam replied as he made his way to the car. Climbing in the driver's seat he took a few minutes to gather his thoughts before beginning the drive back to his apartment.
