I don't own Glee...
Chapter Eleven
Kurt was waiting in the Lima Bean coffee shop for his favourite girls to arrive. He had to admit he was excited to see them. He hadn't really seen them all for almost three weeks now and he was missing them all like crazy. There were certain things you could talk to girls about that you just couldn't with boys. Especially boys you didn't really know all that well yet. When he saw Mercedes, Tina and Rachel all come through the door together he stretched his arm as high as he could reach to wave a greeting at them eagerly and they waved back merrily in reply. Tina wandered over as the other two girls got their orders together. Once Tina had gotten over to the table she gave her friend a large hug, which Kurt reciprocated enthusiastically.
"Hey Kurt, how are you doing?" The Asian girl asked, her smile wide and warm as she sat down beside him.
He smiled widely back at her. He was actually feeling pretty good right now. Now that he had had his talk with his father about the situation at Dalton with Blaine he felt a lot calmer and much, much happier in himself. Of course Blaine wouldn't just stop being his friend. He only needed a bit of space and when he was ready he would come back to Kurt and they would start again right from where they left off. "Good. The classes at Dalton are harder but the kids are kinder." That wasn't exactly a hard thing to be... Most of the students at McKinley had been cruel in their own individual ways.
"That's great Kurt. We all miss you, but we would rather you were safe and happy." Tina announced taking Kurt's hand in her own and squeezing it gently. Kurt looked so much better then the last time she had seen him. His large, dark circles under his eyes had faded and his eyes looked much brighter. The smile was back on his face, and it appeared that he had put on a little bit of weight, making him seem less gaunt then before. Dalton was doing wonders for him and Tina was thankful. Even if it meant she only saw her friend every so often and not every day like before.
Kurt beamed at his loving and kind friend, giving her a little hug again. "Thanks Tina. I miss you all too." He pouted a little, but Tina could still see the curves in the corners of his lips. The two of them both jumped when they heard a loud drawl behind them, whipping themselves around, their eyes wide.
"Aww, I can feel such love in this room already. Well, you look fine Lady Lips." Santana purred as she sat down next to him seductively, crossing her long legs and smirking slightly at the two at the table. Kurt's smile faded as he eyed up the latina, wondering why she was here in the first place. When Brittany bounced up less than a minute later Kurt knew exactly why Santana was here. It could be summed up in one word. Brittany.
"Yay, my favourite dolphin is here. I thought it was only going to be us girls." Brittany exclaimed with joy, hugging Kurt furiously.
"Hey Britt, Santana... I wasn't expecting you." Kurt stated, giving Tina a very pointed look. He had thought it would only be him and his best girls. Not him and almost all the girls from New Directions. Only Quinn was missing and he wouldn't have put it past the girls to have invited her too. He wasn't sure how comfortable he would be talking about Blaine in front of all these girls. He didn't really know Santana and Brittany that well. Despite having made out with Brittany one time.
"Tina said that there was a girl party going on here today. We are girls, right? Were we not supposed to come?" Brittany looked around at the girls on the table with her big innocent eyes, appearing to be a little upset at the prospect of no one wanting to invite her to their party. Kurt taking pity on the poor, simple girl took one of her hands in his own to console her.
"No way. It's great to see you. Come sit. I'll get you a drink." Kurt started to rise from his seat until Santana held out her hand in a stop sign, making Kurt plonk back down on the wooden seats of the Lima Bean.
"No way Hummel. You sit, I'll go get the coffee orders." Santana sashayed over to the counter, said some obviously snide comment about Rachel's clothing choice from the witheringly dark look on Rachel's face, before placing her order with the wide eyed barista who clearly didn't know where to look and so he ended up staring at her cleavage. Kurt almost snorted out loud at how obvious he was being. Straight teenage boys were such idiots when it came to girls. He was relieved to see that his best girl friend Mercedes and his some times arch rival Rachel wander over with their drinks plus Tina's and another for himself with he gratefully received, having finished his first.
"So, how are you Kurt?" Rachel asked, sounding genuine for once. Kurt was a little taken aback with her actually showing an interest in someone other than herself.
"I'm good thank you Rachel. Dalton's a lovely place." Kurt politely replied to her question, sipping his coffee and humming contentedly at the taste. Their was nothing he liked better than his mocha lattes.
"Are there any cute guys? Because now that Finn and I are broken up, I feel like I should try my luck on a new guy." Rachel inquired leaning in towards Kurt in a slightly intimidating way.
"Uh, yeah. Sure Rachel. Loads of cute guys..." Kurt laughed nervously. What was he about to unleash on those poor Dalton boys? He hoped they wouldn't throttle him if she did turn up randomly and flirt. He shuddered at the thought and took another sip of coffee to try and calm his now frazzled nerves.
Mercedes snorted at Rachel's remark. "Don't take any notice of her boo. She just wants to make Finn jealous. Tell us more about Dalton. Does it have a show choir?" Kurt beamed at his best friend. Thank God for Mercedes. She had managed to change the subject to one Kurt was quite happy to talk about. Music and show choir.
"Actually yes it does. I kinda joined. I had to audition though. It's really competitive to get in, but the guys are super nice. I've made a few friends already." Kurt thought about all the Warbler's that had been really kind and supportive this week to him and he was forever grateful, but he couldn't help the lump that formed in his throat as his mind went immediately back to Blaine and how he was still overlooked by these boys. Kurt had asked Nick if he and Jeff would want to do another movie night and they had agreed in the affirmative, although he wasn't sure how sincere they had been. Nick had looked a little pained at the idea of seeing Blaine again, although Jeff was eager. Kurt wasn't sure what that was about but he was determined not to give up in helping his friend.
"You've joined the show choir at Dalton? Are they good? Do we have anything to worry about?" Rachel immediately went into interrogation mode, her coffee forgotten as she stared intensely at Kurt, awaiting a reply.
The chestnut haired boy rolled his eyes at his friends theatrics. Only Rachel could make such a big deal about show choir. Yes, it was fun. Yes, it was even better when you got anywhere in the competitions but it wasn't the be all and end all of life, which is how Rachel seemed to portray it as sometimes. "Yes they are good. Jeez Rachel. You know what, I'm not going to talk to you about what goes on in the Warblers. Leave them be Rachel."
Tina, sensing that an argument could about to occur, stepped in before Rachel could say anything else. "Tell us about your new friends. What are they like?"
"Well Jeff and Nick are both great. They are so kind and thoughtful. They helped me out so much my first few days there. Then there is David. He's a smooth operator. Always a smile on his face. But my closest friend there is a guy called Blaine. He's not in the Warblers, but he should be, if I can ever convince Wes to let him join. He is probably the most talented singer I've ever met." Kurt gushed a faint spattering of pink appearing across his cheeks and his eyes shined as he talked about his new friend. Rachel sat, her arms crossed, giving her friend a dark look when he stated that Blaine was the most talented singer he had ever known, silently fuming. No one was better then her. More talented than her. No one. The other girls, seeing Rachel looking peeved stated to giggle at her blatant narcissism.
Only Brittany seemed oblivious to what was going on around her, only wanting to know if her dolphin was happy. "Are any of them dolphins too?" She asked. She wanted to know if Kurt had moved to a house full of dolphins like him to be with his own kind, but no one had answered her questions regarding that. Not even Santana.
"Actually yes. Nick and Jeff are a couple. It's totally astonishing, they go around school holding hands and being all lovey dovey and no one cares. At all. It's just... amazing. Blaine is too. He got bullied like me in his old school. Well, even worse then me, but he bounced back from it. He understands what I went through though. He's supportive and empathetic and he never puts himself first, no matter what." A smitten look came over Kurt's face then and the girls tried to keep their knowing smiles in check.
"So this Blaine guy, he in our year?" Mercedes inquired casually, her eyebrows raised in a knowing way. Kurt seemed completely unaware to it however, too caught up in his thoughts of how wonderful Blaine was.
"No, he's a sophomore."
"But you see him quite a bit?" Mercedes kept on pushing, wanting to know exactly what this Blaine was to her little Kurtie Pie.
"Oh yeah. The first time I met him he was playing the piano at night in the music room and I was trying to remember my way around the place. It was breathtaking. So emotional and deep. He can put such feeling into his performances. We've become pretty good friends. It's almost like we've known each other forever. The other boys at Dalton don't seem to enjoy his company though for some reason. They all ignore him a lot of the time." Kurt frowned at revealing the last bit, still sore from the snubs on his friend. He just couldn't understand it. Blaine was the nicest guy ever.
"Has he got some hideous deformity or something?" Santana asked snorting at her own jibe and Kurt gave her a menacing look which she chose to ignore.
"No. He's just shy and the other boys seem to look over him, but I'm determined to get him some more friends before the end of the school year." Kurt spat at Santana, still annoyed with her rude comment.
"Are you dolphins together then?" Britt wanted to know, innocently enough. Kurt went bright red at that comment and stuttered a little before answering, shifting on his seat uncomfortably.
"What? Um, I'm not sure how to answer that one Britt..."
"I think she's asking if you and Blaine are seeing each other." Tina giggled behind her hand as Kurt, although Tina wasn't sure it was even possible, went an even brighter shade of red and opened and closed his mouth a little like a goldfish.
"No. God, no. We are just friends. I mean, we've only known each other for like, two weeks." He squeaked out. What the hell was Brittany thinking anyway?
"Oh Please Lady Hummel, you can't fool us. You've been babbling non stop about him and your eyes have gone all gooey and sappy like they do when you think about romance and love and all that jazz." Santana drawled, picking at her immaculate nails and looking a might bored.
"Shut up Santana..." Kurt shuffled uncomfortably in his seat, reaching up to clutch at his pendant, the heat from his face not dissipating as he thought of Blaine looking up at him with his liquid golden eyes through his long, dark lashes. Kurt cleared his throat and scratched at the back of his neck to try and distract himself.
"Well I won't object if he's not one of these Warblers." Rachel merrily responded, giving Kurt a warm smile that clearly meant for him to go for it. Wow, my relationship with Blaine is Rachel Berry approved. Lucky me.
"No one asked you Rachel." Mercedes hissed out and gave Kurt a sympathetic look.
"Seriously guys, I've only known him for two weeks..." He told all the girls, hoping that they would change the subject, but knowing they wouldn't. Boys, with the exception of Santana, were their favourite topic of conversation. All of them. They were worse than he was and he thought he was bad enough.
"Yeah, but you're blushing right now hon." Tina patted his knee consolingly. They had all been there before.
"Can we talk about something else? What's been going on at McKinley?" Kurt asked deflecting somewhat from himself and sighing in relief when it looked like Rachel had taken the bait. Before Rachel could reply however, Mercedes intervened.
"Come on Kurt, you can tell us. Do you like him? Is he super cute?" Kurt sighed. He was not going to even get to change the subject. Deciding it was probably best to be honest and get it over with he took a deep breath and started.
"He's very cute. He's small, but what he lacks in stature he makes up for in personality. He's so witty and charming, but he's also kind and has the biggest heart. He has dark, curly hair that's almost black, and he gels it back so you can't see the curls so much. I bet he looks adorable with them flying free though. I really want to see them not encased in gel. And he has the most hypnotising, soulful golden eyes, that change colour sometimes. I've seen them green and a little grey at times. They're the most beautiful when they're gold though." When the girls all cooed at his description of Blaine he couldn't help but smile proudly at being friends with Blaine Anderson.
"Well, I think that answers that question..." Santana raised her eyebrow, not needing to say more.
Giggling nervously Kurt sighed and told the girls the truth of the matter. "Ok, yes. Maybe I do like him a little. As more than friends. But nothings happened and I don't want to push anything. I'm not going to be a predatory gay this time around thank you very much."
"Yeah, right. I give it two weeks and then he'll start stalking this hobbit boy till he backs down and dates you Kurt." Santana chuckled, earning another death glare from the lean boy.
"Get lost Satan."
"Love you too Kurt." She sang out, giving him a cheeky grin in response.
"So seriously now, what is going on with McKinley?" He asked, emphasising the question as he really did genuinely want to know. Finn had told him nothing yesterday so he would get it out of the girls no matter what.
"Well, glee is fine without you Kurt. Although I can't deny that your voice added that extra little something when added to our background vocals." Rachel blathered on as the rest of the table gave her aggravated glares. Tina, finally having enough of Rachel turned her back on the girl a little and spoke solely to Kurt.
"We all miss you a lot hon. Even Puck has been asking about you."
"We've just been super busy getting ready for sectionals. Which I'm afraid is against you Kurt." Mercedes winced, hoping Kurt wasn't going to be too upset about it. He more than likely already knew anyway. Next week only one of their teams was going to get through to regionals.
"Really? I didn't know that. Maybe the other Warblers didn't want to tell me in case I felt conflicted by performing with them." He told them all, musing about why he hadn't been told.
"Will you?" Rachel asked bluntly.
"Not enough to stop performing. Sorry Rachel but we'll have to remain competitors for now."
"Well I for one think it's great that you're making some new friends and that they are so nice. And cute too." Mercedes winked and Kurt chuckled at his friends sassiness.
"Thanks... Um, would any of you guys want to meet Blaine?" Kurt questioned the girls, suddenly nervous of what their answer would be.
"Of course. Anyone who is friends with our gorgeous Kurt is more than welcome to join any of our New Directions meet ups." Mercedes replied, relieving Kurt no end.
He spent the rest of the time chatting to the girls about random, silly things of no consequence and he thanked them all internally for being such wonderful beings. He didn't think he had got to this stage with any of his Dalton friends, apart from maybe Blaine. He wished he could text the boy and pick up their twenty questions game, that had gone far beyond twenty questions now, but he still didn't know Blaine's number. Half the time he daydreamed joyfully, thinking about his wondrous friend back at school, wondering what he was doing at this precise moment in time. Blaine hadn't told him what he does at the weekends. Kurt knew he didn't go home but he couldn't spend the entire time wondering the halls and playing the piano. He must do something, right? Kurt was curious to know now and he couldn't wait till he got back to Dalton, in the hopes that he would see Blaine when he got back.
