The Magician of Suwa: The Beginning

Valeria

Fai doesn't miss the way his life has improved since moving into the barracks. He's too young to understand the irony of it – from palace to shack – but he's tentatively happy.

Leiyos has only explained the rules once, but Fai thinks that if rules are all the man requires, he will be able to make it. It's hard not to trust "ex"-General Leiyos; after overcoming his initial fear, Fai feels safer with the soldier than he ever did with any maid.

But experience has shown that trusting is never safe.

So he follows, and waits, and watches, hoping for… something.
