Chapter 11: Alice

I had to search on Google Maps on my phone to find out if the asylum I was at still stands if one existed for 100 years. Sure enough, it still was. As I drove up, it looked just like what it was in my vision. At the time I had it, we were in the living room. Everyone had their mates with them, including Bella. Her and Edward looked so happy when we had their wedding only a year ago. I always nod in approval of Edward's mother's wedding ring it really suited her. I could feel all of them watching me until I finally got out of it. No one could explain the significance of the building. All I saw was one word still attached: Asylum.

As I walked up I noticed it was vacant. There were broken windows and torn off bricks. It pretty much looked beaten down. As I looked to its right I got a little nervous which was surprising. There, somewhere in the back, were grave headstones.

When I got around to where I saw them there was a yard full of them. It looked just like you would imagine a graveyard would be. Name it, and it's there. It did not look peaceful at all. For the first time in my long 94 years of my life, I felt creeped out. I didn't want to but my feet didn't listen. Many of the names sounded old fashioned, even way before my time. Then, I realized with a shock that all of them must have been patients that died here.

I suddenly wished Jasper was here with me. He would not only calm me down but I could sure use some company. I soon came across the answer I've been looking for. For written on a stone in script were the words:

Mary Alice Brandon

1901-1920

That was it. No beloved daughter and sister or we will miss you sayings at all. As I looked underneath my name I saw some flowers, daisies I noticed. As I started to figure out who sent them, I heard a voice.

"Aunt Mary? Is that you?"

I froze because of one thing. This wasn't supposed to happen. I very slowly turned around. An elderly woman who looked old enough to be my grandmother was wearing a gown and slippers, which made me think nursing home. She was slowly wandering around touching each headstone looking like she was lost. I stiffened as she came closer and my head screamed "Run!" I couldn't move and she stood in front of me.

"Auntie, I can't believe you're here. My mother Cynthia told me all about you." My sister.

This woman can't possibly believe in my true nature, maybe she's delusional. I've truly never felt this way before. She wasn't part of the vision so she must've changed her mind at the last minute when I was here. Just my luck. She turned to the flowers.

"My mother said you loved daisies so every year she would put them, then I followed after her. I always wanted to meet you..." She said trailing off.

Before I could even form a response, someone called out, "Mom!" Why am I still not moving?! As a lady ran up to my niece she frantically said out of breath, "Mom what are you doing here? Noah told me he got a call at home that said you wandered out of the nursing home by yoursel-" Then she stopped and finally saw me. Her heartbeat picked up and didn't even gasp.

What she said was, "You weren't supposed to come back."

Carlisle reacted exactly as I expected him to. It actually took a lot of convincing from them and some time to myself to finally get over my guilt. I just couldn't believe I finally met my brother and then find out I didn't at all ruin his life. He was actually grateful to get out of the life he had in London especially with the influences of our father. Most of all though, he thanked me because he has found Esme, which I thought their story was highly interesting. It was because of my guilt that it was a little difficult to finally get to know each other, although in fact it has been progressing slowly. I was very impressed with his level of self-control. I must admit, my new family was unsure how I would handle my nephew Edward's wife Bella. The fact that I have nieces and nephews made me happy.

Carlisle decided to take me outside while hunting and found out I can be completely self-controlled like him without the smell of human blood bothering me only if I hunt. Everyone was relieved with that fact.

Besides all of that happening, Jacob's imprint has been making it nearly impossible to concentrate. Of course, his father Billy and the tribe eventually came to terms, despite the extremely unusual circumstances. This didn't make theirs and my family's relationship any less better. That doesn't mean he avoids coming over, which he has reluctantly tried. I always want to be near him and I love his company, which to me right now means very good friends but more than best friends. I'm not ready at this moment to make a romantic connection, although his smile does light up my day.

Carlisle's theory was right, as with some convincing by him to Edward, Bella could finally come back to the house. I liked her immediately although I can tell she was extremely curious about me. Without offending me, Edward does keep a little close just in case he reads my mind and something happens. As I was watching something on the TV she came over and sat next to me. I had to learn about modern-day technology while I was here.

"So, you aren't scared of me yet Bella?" I asked with a friendly smile. She smiled back.

"No, I never was with anyone. You're a person just like them."

I was surprised but touched. I really admire her. I was curious about something though. She continued to watch a show I turned around to face Edward.

Edward, does the Volturi know she knows our secret? He motioned for me to take outside. As we were out of vampire hearing range, he started talking.

"No, they haven't. In fact they don't know she exists."

"Aren't you afraid one day they-"

He nodded. "Every day. I've always wanted her to have this human life she didn't want. I am grateful everyday that she finally listened to me. I know the risks."

I nodded. Even though I am already worried about my niece-in-law, this is not how I wanted to try to bond with Edward. So, I decided to change the subject.

"I understand. So tell me about yourself and the lovely Bella," I smiled warmly. He looked relieved. We decided to hunt even though he didn't really need to, but it was a chance for us to talk. He talked all about Bella and their story from the very beginning. I wanted to cry at some parts because it was such a love I've never heard of that it should be a romantic novel. It was especially intriguing how much they've both been through together.

"So you have thought about leaving for her protection?"

"Yes, I can't believe I even had such a thought. With a revengeful vampire I didn't want to risk it." I could tell he was mentally scolding himself. I wondered if it was hard convincing her to stay human.

"It was very hard, especially if I couldn't read her mind. It probably would've made it easier if I could've made way around her thoughts."

"Do you worry if she'll change her mind one day and stand her ground about it?" I wouldn't blame him if he would be frustrated.

"I surely hope not. I asked Alice once before but so far she's only being reluctant. She has once told me it would be strange to still be together when she's old enough to be my mom or grandmother. I keep telling her it didn't matter."

After we hunted, which I have gotten better at recently, we went back to the house. I then saw Jacob sitting on the couch, clearly trying to "get along" with the boys. I immediately wanted to just sit there next to him and just talk with him all day. I then heard Edward chuckle nearly. As I made my way to the couch I could hear Bella ask why he laughed and he whispered to her, "Imprint." He looked up from the couch as I approached.

"Hey Luce," he smiled widely motioning for me to sit down.

I couldn't help contain my excitement. "Hey Jacob."

"You know, you can call me Jake if you want. Jacob sounds so formal."

I laughed a little. "Okay...Jake," I said trying out the name. It suited him better.

As I sat down, the family came over to talk. Esme actually was the first one to speak.

"Lucy dear, Carlisle and I have been talking it over and wondered if you would like to try out high school. Edward, Alice, Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie already graduated, but they could help you adjust. It's your choice."

I nodded. "I could use some additional education experience, like all of you have done. Sounds good to me."

After the meeting Carlisle handled the steps to enroll me in the high school everyone went to. I hadn't realized how long I've been here and it's already August. It wasn't long before the school day finally came. Alice already had picked out my outfit and couldn't help but feel astonished how much society's dress code has changed. The first day so far turned out to be fine. I still had my English accent so a lot of people couldn't help but ask me questions of where I was from. That was all it was today, pure curiosity. No one has really asked to be my company so it was a little lonely. It wasn't difficult to find my way to where students had lunch. I never liked the idea of calling someone a human, to me they are all people. It makes it sound like they're lower than me.

My family have already gave me tips on how to blend in, especially when it comes to food. As I got my tray of food I managed to find an open table next to a window. They have already told me since they left high school no one ever sat at the table again. I guess they had a feeling the table still belongs to the Cullen's no matter what. So since I am one, I sat down at one of the chairs. I could feel eyes staring at me and a lot of whispers that I could hear clearly. As I played with my food, I was so busy trying to figure out how to "eat it" I suddenly heard someone say something.

"Hi, is it alright if I sit here?" I jumped a little.

"I'm sorry there's a lot of tables full," a girl said sounding a little embarrassed.

"Oh, okay," I said smiling a little. That was a true fact. She then sat down with her food and introduced herself.

"I'm Talia by the way."

I might as well say my last name. Who else would sit here?

"I'm Lucy Cullen."
