A/N: I know it's been forever since I updated this story. Here is the next chapter. Fair warning, there is going to be a lot of heartache in the chapters to come. Someone once made the comment to me that they could no longer read this story because it was too dark for them, and I totally understand that. If you bear with me, I PROMISE things are going to start looking up for our sweet Jade, it's just going to take a bunch of chapters to get there because her little heart and mind are just starting to heal. After all, there really are no good stories out there without at least a little bit of heartache in them before you get to the happy ending.

"Jade Madison Benson-Cabot, sit your bottom down on that chair right this instant." Alex ordered firmly, carefully examining Calvin's finger where his little sister had bitten him.

"Mommy, I don't want a time-out!" Jade whined.

"Well, I'm sorry, but little girls who bite have to sit in time-out for five minutes. You haven't even been there for two minutes yet, so sit down like a good girl."

"NO!"

Before Alex could react, Jade jumped up from the time-out chair and took off running down the hallway. In her little mind, maybe if she ran into her room and closed the door, they wouldn't make her sit in time-out. But her path was blocked by a certain stern-looking Mama.

"Did I just hear you say 'no' to Mommy, young lady?" Olivia asked sternly, picking up her little girl and bringing her back to the time-out chair.

"NO!" Jade pouted as she sat in the chair. It certainly wasn't her fault that Calvin hadn't been playing the game the way she wanted him to! He had deserved that bite, as far as she was concerned.

"Young lady, I suggest you lose the attitude before Nanny and Papa get here." Alex advised. Her parents were coming to visit and she did not want to present them with a naughty little girl.

"Will they bring us presents?!" Jade brightened up at the thought.

"I'm sure they will want to spoil both of you, but remember that we love Nanny and Papa because they are family, not just because they bring us presents. Now turn around and sit in the chair properly, please. In five minutes you can get up and apologize to brother for biting him, and then we will get ready for Nanny and Papa."

"I'm sorry!" Jade wanted to get up from the chair immediately and get ready for Nanny and Papa.

Olivia and Alex both had to keep themselves from smiling.

"Nope, you know that's not how it works. First you sit in time out and think about what you did, then you apologize and we move on." Alex reminded her.

"How's your finger, baby?" Olivia asked Calvin.

"I'm okay. It doesn't even hurt anymore." Calvin shrugged.

"It didn't break the skin at all, so I just washed it in warm water. I think that will be enough." Alex explained.

"All right. Cal, I need to talk to Mom in the other room for a minute. Keep an eye on your sister, please." Olivia said.

"Sure, Mom."

"So, I got an appointment for Jade to go talk to a therapist tomorrow after school," Olivia informed her wife when they were safely out of earshot.

"Thank you. She's been a little better behaved since we moved her out of Ms. Singer's class, but I'm still worried about her. I mean, she's a kid, and all kids act up sometimes, but even I'm sick of her being in time-out so often. Two and three time-outs in one day seems like a bit much. And those nightmares of hers are getting worse." Alex expressed her concern. She and Olivia had been up with Jade almost every single night for the last few weeks when Jade woke up screaming from a nightmare, but she never seemed to be able to properly express to her parents exactly what her nightmares were about.

"Speaking of Ms. Singer, I got a call from Mrs. Wright today. Ms. Singer has been suspended without pay, and she'll probably be fired." Olivia informed Alex.

"Good. I still can't believe what that woman did to my baby." Alex's blue eyes flashed dangerously.

"Come on, Mommy Bear," Olivia laughed, "lets go release our little ankle biter from time-out and get ready for your parents to come visit."

"All right, kiddo, time-out is over. Do you have something to say to your brother?" Olivia asked as she and Alex walked back into the kitchen.

"I'm sorry, Calvin!" Jade jumped up from the chair and ran over and hugged her big brother.

"It's okay, squirt." Calvin patted his sister on the head.

Alex's parents arrived just in time for dinner, and since it was Olivia's turn to cook, she served her famous spaghetti and meatballs. Jade seemed to be in better spirits, and babbled away happily, telling her grandparents about all the things that little kids like to talk to adults about, like the color pink and why Jasmine was the best Disney princess. Jade even asked if Nanny could give her her bath that evening, and the older woman obliged.

"So, baby, do you remember a really long time ago when I found you in front of the coffee shop downtown? Do you remember how Mama took you to my work and the room with all the toys?" Olivia asked that night at bedtime.

"I remember, Mama." Jade responded.

"Well, tomorrow after school, you, me, and Mommy are going to go talk to a very nice lady named Dr. Stevens. She isn't like Dr. Kline; Dr. Stevens doesn't take your temperature or give you shots. Dr. Stevens works in a room with lots of toys just like the one Mama took you to, and you can play with the toys while you talk to her."

Jade's little face clouded over.

"She won't hurt me?"

"Of course not, sweetheart. Mama and I will be there the whole time and we would never let anybody hurt our baby girl." Alex assured her daughter as she helped Jade into her nightgown and handed Jade her blue teddy bear from her first Mama that Jade slept with every night.

"Okay. Can I go say goodnight to Nanny and Papa?"

"Yes, you may," Olivia nodded, "Hugs and kisses, then straight to bed. It's getting late."

Jade woke up screaming again that night, and her poor grandparents were nearly beside themselves, never having witnessed such a heartbreaking scene.

"This has been happening a lot lately. We are taking her to a therapist tomorrow who will hopefully get to the bottom of it." Alex explained to her parents over the noise as she gently held Jade in her arms and rocked her, while Olivia went to check on Calvin, who was trying to sleep with a pillow over his head, and not succeeding very well.

Jade came out of school the next day smiling proudly. Mr. Douglas had given her a gold star for good listening and following directions. Olivia and Alex praised her and promised her ice cream after dinner as a reward. The threesome drove downtown where they parked in a parking lot, entered a tall building, and rode the elevator up to the sixth floor.

"Hi," Olivia greeted the receptionist, "we have an appointment for our daughter, Jade Benson-Cabot."

"Oh, of course. Please have a seat; Dr. Stevens will be with you momentarily." The receptionist smiled at the cute little girl in her blonde mother's arms.

"No, Dr. Stevens will be with you right now," a blonde woman walked into the waiting room with a warm smile, "and if you'll all follow me, we'll get to know each other."

"Mommy!" Jade threw her arms around Alex's neck and buried her face in her shoulder, suddenly feeling afraid of this stranger.

"It's okay, sweetie. Mommy and Mama aren't leaving you even for a second." Alex assured her daughter kindly, rubbing her back.

"You're 'Mommy'?" Dr. Stevens inquired, and Alex nodded, "So that must make you 'Mama'." Dr. Stevens looked at Olivia for confirmation.

"Yes." Olivia smiled proudly.

"Good. It will make things less confusing if I know things like that. Jade, a little birdie told me that you like to play with dolls. I have lots of them. Would you like to come see?"

At first, Jade refused to let go of Alex and just sat on her lap while the adults talked. She thought back to that day when Mama found her in front of the coffee shop. She remembered feeling terrified as her first Mama ran through the streets holding her in her arms. She remembered not quite understanding what was happening when her first Mama kissed her all over her face before running off, never to be seen again. She remembered seeing Mister run past her as he chased her first Mama. She remembered a tall, pretty woman taking her to a building where lots of other tall people were walking around, and bringing her into a room very much like the one they were in right now with lots of toys.

Jade loved her parents very much. Olivia and Alex gave Jade lots of hugs and kisses, fed her yummy food, gave her toys to play with, took her to fun places, taught her cool things, and told her they loved her multiple times a day. They called her 'young lady' and put her in time-out a lot, too, which was very annoying, but she guessed that's just what Mommies did when you were naughty and didn't listen.

Jade was only four when Holly was murdered, and Olivia and Alex hoped that Jade was young enough that the memories of her first four years of life would eventually grow dim. For now, though, Jade had her memories and she didn't quite know how to process them. Scary memories of her first Mama screaming and crying. Scary memories of really hard spankings that Mister made her first Mama give her when she made too much noise (she didn't know that these spankings were her first Mama's way of saving her from a much worse beating from Mister). Scary memories of seeing Mister smack Mama across the face and beat her with some kind of long black object. She remembered seeing her first Mama with black eyes and huge bruises all over her body. Her first Mama wore a funny necklace around her neck and usually wore only underwear. Her first Mama didn't feed her very much, but she gave her lots of hugs and kisses and told Jade that she loved her.

Jade had loved her first Mama too, and still did. The problem was that she didn't know if she was allowed to still love her. Her first Mama was gone and never came back. Mama told her that her first Mama had died, but Jade wasn't even sure if she knew what 'dead' was. Maybe her first Mama just didn't love her anymore. Now she had a new Mama and a Mommy and a big brother, and that was the best thing ever. But how long would it be until they didn't love her anymore either? The poor little girl was dealing with too many conflicting emotions all at once and didn't know what to do with them.

Alex looked down when Jade began to tremble in her arms, and then began to struggle to get away. Alex almost dropped her, but was able to keep hold of her.

"I WANT MY MAMA!" Jade screamed as loud as she possibly could, fighting with all her might to get away.

"Mama's here, sweetheart." Olivia jumped in and attempted to take Jade from Alex, but was unsuccessful.

"NO! I WANT MY MAMA!" Jade screamed. She finally managed to free herself from Alex's arms. She ran across the room and hid underneath a table. She sobbed and cried and screamed for her Mama.

"Why is she screaming for you? You're right here." Alex gave her wife a perplexed look. Olivia just shrugged. This behavior was nothing new. That's why they were here at the therapist's office in the first place.

"Jade? Mama's right here, baby. Come out and see me, sweetie." Olivia tried to coax Jade out from under the table. Jade just continued to scream and cry, battling demons in her little mind that she didn't even understand.

All of a sudden, it hit Olivia like a ton of bricks.

"She isn't screaming for me. She's screaming for Holly." Olivia's heart broke. How many times had Jade been screaming for Mama and Olivia had swooped in to save the day, forgetting that there had once been another Mama in her little girl's life?

"Does she understand what happened to Holly?" Dr. Stevens asked. She didn't know the specific details of the story, but she knew that Jade's birth mother had been murdered.

"The day the police found Holly's body, I told Jade that she was dead, although I didn't go into the details. She started calling me 'Mama' not too long after that, and I adopted her soon after. She was so little, though, I don't know if she really understood what I was talking about. I mean, she was only four. Do four year olds really understand death?"

"Not usually. Their brains aren't developed that far yet. Is Holly buried somewhere?" Dr. Stevens asked.

"Yes, I made sure she got a headstone at the cemetery." it was the least Olivia could to do give Holly a proper burial.

"Has Jade been there to visit? It might help to have some kind of tangible idea about where Holly is."

"I never thought of that." Alex mentally kicked herself for overlooking something so simple and obvious.

"Alexandra, is it?" Dr. Stevens wrote some things in a notebook and then looked at Alex.

"Please call me Alex." Alex smiled.

"Sorry. I just remember you from the paper after your rescue, and the paper called you Alexandra. You came along after Olivia adopted Jade, is that right?" Alex's story had made national news; the wife of an NYPD detective found alive after twenty years.

"Well, actually, it's more complicated than that. Twenty years ago, I was kidnapped, but Olivia and I had actually been together for two years prior to that and we were reunited after my rescue. To complicate matters further, the man who kidnapped me is also Jade's biological father. After Holly's murder, he made me dye my hair so that I would look like Holly, and sent me to try to get Jade for him, and that's when I was rescued."

"And this man is now in jail?"

"Unfortunately, no. He is still out and about somewhere and the police have been looking for him, but as far as we know he isn't looking for Jade anymore. The man who is in jail is my kidnapper's brother, who was Holly's abductor."

'Is this seriously my life?' Alex thought to herself as she spoke. It sounded like something out of an episode of Criminal Minds.

Olivia looked down to see Jade wrapped around her leg, still crying but no longer screaming, and bent down to pick her up and cuddle her close.

"Jade, it's almost time for you and your mommies to go home, but would you like to come back and see me next week?" Dr. Stevens was certain that she could help this precious little girl heal.

"I'm sorry I screamed." Jade apologized timidly, cuddling into her Mama.

"That's okay, honey. You know what? Here in Dr. Stevens' office, you're allowed to scream and cry and throw toys and have all those sad feelings. I want to get to know you better and maybe I can help you not be so sad all the time. Will you let me try to help?"

Olivia choked back a groan. If they had to deal with their little girl throwing her toys now that the idea had been presented to her, she was going to kill Dr. Stevens.

"Okay. Mama, can we go home? I'm hungry." Jade hadn't had her after-school snack yet.

"Yes, baby, we can go home." Olivia kissed the top of Jade's head.
