Chapter 10: Council Approved
Fourteen men and women sat in chairs in a semi-circle. I and Sebastian were seated on our individual thrones. The silver tiara was pressed onto my curls, the weight once again causing me to have a major migraine. There was a lingering silence in the room; everyone was waiting for Sebastian to speak. A king had to begin a council meeting, didn't he?
"I, King Sebastian of Edom, bring to order this meeting of The Royal Council of Edom. What matters are of discussion?" my brother announced to the members seated before us.
A woman with graying hair who was dressed in the red council robes stood up.
"I, Megara Greenwood, bring forth a word of congratulations to Queen Clarissa on the event of her coronation as queen, and her engagement to the respected Mr. Derrick Bayrose. I also have an inquiry about food rations for citizens of Edom." She spoke, and Sebastian nodded. He looked to me, and I realized I was required to thank her.
Smoothing down the chiffon skirt I was wearing, I stood up as the old woman sat down.
"I thank the royal council for the blessing of my coronation, and the congratulatory words you have spoken of my engagement. They are deeply appreciated. I also have some news regarding my engagement. Previously it had been decided that I would marry Mr. Bayrose on the day of my eighteenth birthday. But my dear brother was graciously able to move the marriage ceremony to an earlier date. I will be married within the next coming weeks." I said dully, finishing the speech Sebastian had instructed me to say. A murmur of people echoed, and finally the women stood up with the council's input.
"The royal council all agrees. It would be an honor to witness the royal marriage of your highness and Mr. Derrick Bayrose. A union between common and royalty will most definitely strengthen political ties." Megara approved, and Sebastian smiled.
"I believe that we have covered enough ground for one session. Thank you to all our members. You are dismissed." Sebastian announced, and the shuffling of feet invaded the air. I rolled my eyes, and then tried to leave, but Sebastian caught my arm.
"Remember Clarissa, Derrick is waiting in the meeting room. Third door on the right as you enter the hall to your bedroom. Be on your best behavior, little sister." My brother warned, and then released me. I snarled at him behind his back, but began my way to the meeting.
I sat impatiently waiting in a conference chair upholstered in a slippery red vinyl. What was with these people and the color red, anyway? It was everywhere. Could my boring false fiancé take any damn longer? Sebasshole had told me he would be here. Yeah right. I was in a really bad mood after that council meeting, as you can tell. Congratulations on my engagement were the least of my worries.
Finally the conference room door opened and entered the very well dressed Derrick Bayrose III. I almost vomited at the smell of his cologne. It smelled like sandalwood, a scent both me and Izzy despised. When I thought of Izzy, my heart began beating faster. Derrick speaking to me drew me out of my thoughts.
"Well, Clarissa, here we are. I believe since our marriage agreement has been approved, we should start planning. A royal ceremony is to be expected, of course. Traditional Shadowhunter wedding would be our best choice." He thought aloud, and I just nodded, my hand holding my head.
"I have one condition. And you have to follow through. My best friend, Isabelle Lightwood, is being kept prisoner by Sebastian. I want her as my maid of honor. Speaking of course, so she can help me prepare. So, if there is no Isabelle, there will be no bride. Understood?" I bargained, and Derrick looked at me in surprise. But after a moment of mental deliberation on his part, he nodded.
"And you can call me Clary, by the way. Only my brother and those stuck up court and council members call me Clarissa. I prefer Clary." I smiled sweetly. Derrick smiled, mostly because he thought I was letting him in. Ha.
"He believes in you greatly you know. King Sebastian loves you, and genuinely cares for you. You should give him some credit." Derrick told me, and I just nodded solemnly. He loves me in a way more disgusting than you ever know, buddy I thought to myself.
"I think that I will be going." I said quickly, and pushed myself from the chair I was seated in. I needed to speak to Izzy.
"Farewell, Clary." Derrick said, and he bowed slightly. I just smiled halfheartedly, and left the room.
I zoomed to my bedroom, ringing the bell for a maid. Shuffling footsteps echoed before a very dirty looking Serena greeted me. The hem of her dress was soiled with grime, and her hair was a mess.
"You rang, urgently. Is everything all right?" the young maid asked me. I responded quickly.
"Get me Isabelle quickly. I must speak to her immediately." I rambled. Serena nodded at my command, and off she went again.
I sat down on the foot of my bed, and waited for my accomplice to arrive.
Ten minutes later, a very weary looking Isabelle walked into my chambers. Dark circles coated the lower part of her eyes
"Hey, Clary, what do you need?" she whispered to me, trying to conceal her voice from the guards in the hall.
"I have a plan." I whispered back, and Izzy's eyes lit up with excitement. I knew that look, her devious devil expression.
"Okay, but I have a surprise first." She said smiling. Walking out of the room, I heard her tell someone to come closer. I deciphered heavy footsteps against the hard floor.
And that's when a beautiful head of blonde hair entered, and spoke two words.
"Hey, beautiful."
A/N:
I hope you liked it! And guess what beautiful blonde now speaks... :) I will update when I can. Now remember, I will dedicate my next chapter to my 100th reviewer, so you better reserve the honor!
