The Choosing
"Rose! You need to get up now." Zaza's angry voice drags me from my troubled dreams of dragons, dark graveyards and mazes, and I crack open my eyes blearily to look at my annoying friend. Her hair is a light blue, which is a sign that she's worried, and I immediately sit up when I notice this.
"What's wrong?" I ask, blinking in the harsh sunlight filtering through the compartment windows.
"If you sleep in too long, everyone will guess what you did last night!" She exclaims, flustered, and I frown.
"I never told you what I was doing."
"Tania and Laila were saying that they had heard the sound of footsteps in the train last night, but couldn't see anyone. I obviously guessed it was you going to see Scorp." She grabs a pillow from her mat on the floor, "So get your arse out of bed, you stupid, reckless ginger!" She shouts, thumping me on the head with said pillow.
"Calm down Zaza!" I exclaim, clambering out of bed and doing my best to protect myself from her attacks, "It's not like they would do anything, even if they did find out!"
She stops her assault and stares at me bemusedly, "Have you seen that freaky headmaster? He would definitely send you back to Hogwarts, or I wouldn't put it past him to curse you to stay away from Scorp! Anything to look good to Draco Malfoy, who's probably paying him to keep you and Scorpius apart!" She looks truly worried for me, and I'm touched at how much she seems to have thought through it all.
"Oh my gosh... I hadn't even thought of that." I whisper, covering my mouth with my hands as I consider everything Mr. Ankhel would be prepared to do to keep a Weasley and a Malfoy apart, "Thank you so much Aliza, I have no idea what I would do without you." I hug her quickly, before hurriedly gathering up my stuff to go shower and get ready for the day, immensely grateful to Zaza for making me come back to my senses. I need a plan.
…...
"You have exactly twenty four hours to place your name in the goblet of fire. As from this moment, the Triwizard Tournament has begun." Mr. Ankher announces grandly, after the awful arrival of the Beauxbatons students, who simply pranced into the great hall fluttering their long Veela eyelashes and showering sickly sweet-smelling flowers over everyone. At his words, dark green flames burst out of the goblet, making us all jump. The Norwegian headmaster leads the way out of the great hall, and the rest of the teachers follow him, leaving all of us students, simply staring in aw at the ornate goblet of fire. I spot Scorpius striding up towards it, and immediately rush after him, clutching my pre-prepared piece of parchment in my hand.
"I was hoping you would forget your mad plan." I whisper, falling into step beside him as we approach the front of the room, feeling the gazes of nearly everyone in the great hall burning into our backs.
He smiles wryly, "Fat chance, Rose, I was rather hoping you would be the one to forget your plans."
"Fat chance, Scorpius." I shoot back, right before we stop in front of the goblet of fire.
"On three?" I whisper, gazing at the flickering green flames nervously, Scorpius nods beside me, and grabs my hand.
"One... Two... Three!" We count together, our voices rising higher with each word. At three, we both drop our parchment into the goblet dramatically and at exactly the same time.
I grin at him, "No turning back now."
He smiles back, and leans down to press his lips against mine briefly before walking back towards his table, glancing warily at his headmaster, who seems to have appeared out of nowhere and is watching us angrily. Merlin, I hate that man. I stick my tongue out at him childishly before stalking back towards Zaza.
"You didn't tell me you were entering the tournament!" Zaza hisses at me, and I smile at her.
"Looks like Ankhel can't send me back to Hogwarts now." I grin triumphantly, and she rolls her eyes.
"You have to be chosen first you idiot."
I smile at my friend, "If Scorpius is, so am I. and Scorpius has to be chosen."
She blinks, confused, "What?"
"I put my name in at the same time as Scorp on purpose." I explain, glad for all the reading on the Goblet of Fire I had been doing today, "Our fates are definitely tied together for the whole game. If he's chosen, so am I, and vice versa, but not only that. If he wins, I win, and if I win, he wins." I pause, and struggle to reveal the one flaw in my plan, but it can only come out in a whisper, "And... if he dies, I die... and if I die... I'll have killed Scorpius."
…...
The next 24 hours seem to pass excruciatingly slowly. We have all of the classes which we normally have at Hogwarts, except in the gloomy Durmstrang rooms, where we all wear wooly scarfs and huge coats in a desperate attempt to keep warm. Finally, the night of the 1st of October arrives, and we find ourselves squished together around the tables, watching impatiently as Mr. Ankher eats his food excruciatingly slowly, dabbing his mouth with a dark handkerchief between each mouthful and sipping his wine far too often for our liking.
"I swear, if we have to endure watching this man eat more than 5 minutes longer, I will Avada myself." I hiss into Zaza's ear, but she doesn't react, and simply sits there stiffly, not tearing her eyes away from the headmaster. Her hair is a vivid electric blue, which proves how nervous she is.
"What's wrong with Aliza?" I whisper to Albus, and he looks down sheepishly, not answering my question. I observe his red cheeks and embarrassed expression, and understanding hits me.
"Albus you didn't!" I exclaim, staring at my cousin with amazement and a small amount of anger.
He nods sheepishly.
I turn back to watching Ankhel's torturous eating, "I swear Al, if you stop me and Scorp from getting into the tournament, I will personally kill you." I growl, even more nervous now that I know I'll be competing against Harry Potter's son.
"If you get chosen, we'll share the money, and if I get chosen, you get 20 percent. Deal?" I overhear James telling Fred jokingly, and I turn around to glare at them.
"You put your names in too?" I almost shout in my anger, and everyone turns around to stare at me. I completely ignore them, as I'm only looking at my two cousins.
The grin, and say simultaneously, "Yep!"
I groan, great, now me and Scorp are going against two Potters.
The sounds of footsteps resound in the silent room, and I turn around as fast as possible to see the headmaster approaching the goblet. He observes his watch, tapping a finger against his wrist in time to the ticking seconds. The finger pauses just before a rush of red flames erupts from the goblet. The flames disappear as quickly as they had come, leaving only a burnt piece of parchment drifting slowly downwards. Mr. Ankher's hand reaches out and closes around the slightly charred paper.
"Violette Galantiere." he reads out in a clear voice, and the Beauxbatons students clap politely as a rather pretty and petite brunette girl stands up nervously, and makes her way to the archway covered in a deep red curtain which Ankher motions too.
The clapping is replaced by silence once again as the students await the next name with bated breath. My own breath catches in the back of my throat in my nervousness, and I down a whole glass of water in an attempt to calm down. A failed attempt, I might add.
The flames flare up once again, and, once again, the awful headmaster slowly catches the burnt parchment in mid-air.
"Arla Dyrdal." He announces, and I drop my head down into my hands in despair, holding back tears as a very pretty blond girl walks towards the door, grinning widely and waving flirtatiously at everyone.
Albus is chosen for Hogwarts, but I can't even find the willpower to cheer for him as he walks up the aisle between the tables, briefly touching my shoulder in comfort as he walks past me. Zaza's hair turn bright yellow in fear for her boyfriend. I always thought that color was strange, all the others make sense, like grey for sad and pink for happy, but bright yellow for scared is just so random. Normally I would have laughed at this, but I don't even feel like raising my head, much less laughing, at the moment.
I tune out Ankher's droning voice as he talks about dates for the tasks and all that crap, and just close my eyes in despair at my future with Scorpius.
Then everyone gasps.
"Look up Rose!" Fred exclaims, and I reluctantly raise my head to look at him.
"Not at him you troll!" James says, staring up at the front of the great hall.
I slowly turn around just in time to see Mr. Ankher catching two floating pieces of parchment, and my eyes widen in amazement.
"Scorpius Malfoy." The hateful man reads aloud, and I have to repress a cry of joy as Scorp stands up and walks to the front of the room, looking completely bemused.
"Read the other one!" Micheal shouts out.
The headmaster's eyes narrow as they read the other piece of parchment.
"Rose Weasley." He mutters darkly, so quietly that if the hall weren't so silent, we would have had no chance of hearing him.
"YES!" I scream, punching the air and running to join Scorpius.
