Chapter Eleven:
The company became more aware of their surroundings now, not wanting another in counter like the one with the goblins. Calaerwen and Bilbo avoided each other for most of the time. Neither wanting to speak of what happened a few days ago.
When Gandalf asked Calaerwen to accompany him on this journey she never imagined that she would meet someone like Bilbo, nor being so fond of them. For Bilbo he believed he'd be a bachelor the rest of his life, never believed he would find someone he'd actually can't live without.
"You know you shouldn't mess with the poor boys feelings," Calaerwen heard an wise old voices call from behind her. She turned to see Gandalf looking down at her.
"I. I don't mean to Gandalf." She told him, her eyes traveling to Bilbo's form walking in front of her. She heard the old wizard sigh beside her.
"Just try talking to him." Calaerwen nodded to him running ahead.
"Bilbo!" She cried catching the bachelor hobbit's attention. Just before she could speak a loud voiced echoed throughout the company howling following. Bilbo and Calaerwen looked into each other's eyes growing wide.
"Out of the frying pan.." Thorin breathed as the wargs and their owners ran towards them.
"And into the fire! Run! RUN!" Calaerwen wasted no time in accepting his command, quickly she grabbed Bilbo's hand and pulled him along following her other companions.
One of the wargs cut off Bilbo and Calaerwen from the rest of the company and snapped at their heels. Bilbo pulled Calaerwen and himself behind a giant rock. He shielded her behind his taller frame, pulling out his sword as the warg jumped on top of the bolder.
The warg charged itself upon the sharp blade in the hands of the hobbit, catching them by surprise. "Up into the trees, all of you! Come on, climb! Bilbo, climb!" Gandalf cried in a panic climbing a tree himself. Bilbo began pulling his sword out of the skull of the warg when others began to surround them.
"Bilbo! Come on!" The blonde half breed screeched her voice hitting a high pitch. "Hurry please!" Calaerwen desperately clung on to his sleeve.
"There coming!" Thorin called.
Bilbo had finally gotten his sword free when he looked up there were several more wargs were all around them. He grabbed ahold of Calaerwen's wrist and pulled her to the nearest tree.
The wargs' growling ceased as a pale white warg came into view along with it's rider. Thorin's eyes turned into shock. "Azog?!"
The words spoken by the pale Orc was in a different tongue only to be caught by Calaerwen's elvish ears.
"Do you smell it? The scent of fear? I remember your father reeked of it, Thorin son of Thrain."
"It cannot be.."
Azog turned to his riders, "That one is mine. Kill the others!" Under his command the others began to jump onto the trees. The power of the wargs began shaking the trees violently, eventually the tree Bilbo and Calaerwen resided in uprooted from the weight of the wargs causing them to jump to the next tree.
Gandalf looked around desperately for something that could save some time, grabbing a pinecone and set it on fire. "Fili!" He tossed it to the blonde dwarf who catched it without hesitation. Bilbo and the other dwarves gather more pinecones when Gandalf sets them on fire they begin to chunk them at the wargs and their riders.
This forced the powerful wargs to retreat away from the trees. Azog roared in anger as the dwarves cheered for their victory. However, their cheers turned into cries of fear as the deep roots of the tree started to tip over the edge of the cliff. Calaerwen's screams echoed as her hands began to slip from her grasp on the branch. Only to have Fili take hold of her hand.
Thorin angrily pushed himself up, drawing his sword walking towards the now laughing Azog. The grand dwarven king ran towards Azog and his white wrag. He didn't get a chance to attack them for the warg pushed him down with it's mighty paw.
Thorin, panting, got back to his feet. Azog swung his mace smashing Thorin in the head.
Bilbo managed to pull himself up to stand on the tree. Calaerwen watched in fear as the burglar made his way down to help Thorin. If she didn't help Bilbo was going to her himself killed.
Swiftly she swung her feet over to also stand on top the tree drawing her sword.
As the warg moved closer in for the kill Bilbo drew his sword throwing himself in front of the warg. Knocking then both over, Azog growled angrily as Bilbo killed one of his orcs.
"Kill him." Azog commanded. A few wargs began to surround Bilbo, snarling at him. Suddenly, Calaerwen runs into the fray with a battle cry jumping onto a wargs back imbedding it in the skull. This was a sign for the others who had also gotten unstuck in the trees to begin fighting.
The pale warg wacks Calaerwen's small frame with it's massive head sending her flying away. Now nothing stood in their way to kill Bilbo. Azog and his warg moved closer ready for the kill.
But, his plan failed when gigantic eagles swooped in and picked everyone up on to their backs.
Calaerwen was knocked unconscious but didn't have any serious injuries, so Bilbo hoped as she layed in his lap. He couldn't help but wonder, Why did she always insist on protecting him? Sure, she said before that's what her job is on this quest but why him?
It never accrued to him, especially when he first met her, that she would become a person of great importance to him. He didn't understand why he felt such a way when he never had before. Then his mind travelled to the day she kissed him, a slight pink rising to his cheeks. She was such a hypnotizing creature, it was like she was made for him and only him. Her lips matched perfectly with his.
'What am I thinking?' He scoffed.
