The following day, Kogoro was released and Eri brought him to her house. After that, she returned to her office. Midori handed her a package. Instantly upon receiving the gift, she felt nervous. She headed inside her office and opened the contents. Inside was a bullet then a note.
"I wasn't able to get the bullet I used to shoot your precious Kogoro yesterday. But I got so many of this and I plan to use them all of them to create holes in the body of that asshole. Next time, he won't be so lucky."
Eri shivered at the note. After she read it her cellphone rang. Again, it displays unknown caller. She answered it.
"Kisaki Eri speaking."
"Oh I know it is you alright. Your boyfriend got lucky yesterday." He said venom dripping on his voice.
"Who are you and what do you want?" Eri shouted.
"I told you, you will know me in time and I want you to leave that boyfriend of yours."
"I will not leave Kogoro just because some sick bastard like you are telling me to do so."
"Fine by me, Kisaki-san. I know his every move. I always know where he is. And I will strike again Kisaki-san. Maybe this time I won't use bullets. But I promise you, stay with him and I will kill him."
Eri heard the line went dead. She would gladly give up Kogoro if it means that he gets to keep his life. Sure she will be broken but she cannot risk something like this to happen to him.
Eri arrived at her house determined to end it all with Kogoro. She cried and cried but she has to do it if it means that he will keep his life. Her heartache would be worth it.
She entered her room to find a sleeping Kogoro. Another burst of tears flowed through her. Eri cried silently afraid that Kogoro would wake. The lawyer then went inside her bathroom. Their memories together playing inside her mind like some movie. But she has to let it all go.
After an hour inside the bathroom, Eri finally emerged outside. First thing she noticed is Kogoro sitting on the bed as if waiting for her to come out.
"Finally. I thought you were going to sleep there." He said winking at her. Kogoro knows that they cannot play tonight as it might open his stitches.
Eri wanted nothing more than to be in his arms and tell him everything. For sure leaving him isn't the only option right? Perhaps Kogoro could just take care of himself. But can she risk Kogoro's life? She felt another wave of tears pool in her eyes but blink it away. "Let's sleep, Anata."
Kogoro noticed Eri acting weird. "Eri, is everything alright?" he asked.
For now it is. But tomorrow morning it won't be anymore. She then gave him a fake smile. "Just tired. I had to stay late."
Kogoro wrapped his arms around her and kissed her hair. "Alright sleep now. I love you, Eri."
Eri closed her eyes and did not respond.
Eri sat taking in her coffee prepared for work. She will tell Kogoro now and start her misery. She waited for Kogoro to come and get his coffee. When he did, she mustered all her strength.
"Kogoro, we need to talk." Eri started.
"About what?" The detective seemed concerned, Eri sounded too serious.
"Us, Kogoro." She pulled her breath. "I want us to break-up." How she maintained her face is beyond Eri.
Kogoro seemed shocked. He tried to remember what had he done for Eri break-up with him. "Why?" He asked but when Eri didn't answer he spoke again. "Is it because I tease you? Is it because I am not good enough for you? Or because of my womanizing ways before? Eri, I love you."
She wants to cry. Eri wants to go and just tell him the truth. She dared not to look at his eyes. His voice sounded in pain. If she dared to look at his eyes, she might break her resolve. "I am sorry, Kogoro, I just don't think you can change. You always have some complaints against me. One day, you will get tired of me and go back to your womanizing ways. It is best to end it now before we go further."
"I never meant those Eri. I was just joking around. Why would I go back to my womanizing ways that you are saying when I got you? Eri, you're the only one I love!" Kogoro said tears on his eyes.
But the lawyer's face remained stoic. "Kogoro, just leave. You will just hurt me."
"Then tell me that you don't love me, Eri! Just say it and I will leave. I will never bother you ever again."
"I cannot lie to you, Kogoro. I love you, but we cannot be together. If I learned to love you, I can also learn not to love you. Go! I don't want to see you again."
"Eri…"
"Stop it, Kogoro. I will not change my mind. When I come back from work, I don't want to see you or any of your stuff here! This is my house and I don't need a parasite!"
Eri left immediately giving no time for Kogoro to respond. She drove two streets away and cried.
Eri broke up with him. Kogoro sat on the chair for what seemed like hours when it was only half an hour. Finally pulling himself, he headed over to her room and took all his stuff. Eri let him go just like that. Where did he go wrong? He is not perfect he knows but he loves her the way he knows.
But it wasn't enough for her. He just has to accept his fate. Perhaps love wasn't really for him. Heading outside he took one last look at Eri's house and hailed a cab.
Two days later, Eri received another call from the mysterious man.
"Good, Kisaki-san. Finally you got rid of that pesky detective. Do not worry, I keep my word. No harm shall come to him. Now, it is time that we meet. Tonight, head over the Beika park and wait for me at the swing. Do not tell anyone, Eri. With a snap of my finger, that detective of yours can still be found dead."
Eri dared not to speak a word. She knows that she could call the police but what if he kills Kogoro. It seems that he knows what he is doing. But Kogoro is good. She can go to him and let him know right? Once again, Eri is confused. She let the love of her life go because he was in danger being close to her. Now she can be in danger meeting this man.
Surprisingly, there aren't much people at the Beika Park considering that it is Friday. Well, it is past 8PM already. As instructed, Eri headed over the swing. She decided not to tell anyone. It seems that this man has no intention of harming her but Kogoro.
Finally, a man in a black shirt approach her. "Missed me, Eri?"
The lawyer turned her head and was surprised to see her ex-boyfriend. "T-Tobe… It was you. You bastard!" She shouted. Eri tried to hit him but he caught both of her arms.
"Fiery. That's what I love about you. I suggest though that you don't make a scene here. Look around you."
Eri did and she was surprised to see several men scattered hiding in the trees. "What do you want from me, Tobe?"
He smirked at the lawyer and let her arms go. "Didn't I tell you, you are mine, Kisaki-san."
"I love Kogoro."
"I kinda figured that one out. Well let's see how much you love that detective of yours. I'm going to make you a deal."
"Deal?"
"We get back together and no harm will come to that detective of yours."
"You are crazy! As if I would get back to you! You're not half the man Kogoro is."
"Hahaha… Feisty. You see those men? All of them work for me. With a snap of my finger, they will all kill that detective. And I got men following Kogoro all the time. Perhaps you are not aware but since you broke up with that detective of yours, he hasn't really come out of his house. It seems that killing him is my last resort. What I want to see is him suffering knowing that you and I are together again."
"Tobe, please… Just let me go and I will not tell anyone about this."
"NO!" He screamed. "You are mine, Eri. This is how it was supposed to be."
Kogoro woke up feeling dizzy. He fell asleep on the couch. When he stood, cans of beer are scattered everywhere. He hasn't gone to work since Eri broke up with him. He just couldn't take it. Now he knows what a broken heart feels like. But he has to pull himself together right? If Eri doesn't love him, then she doesn't. Even if he burns her house to the ground, there's nothing he can do to make her love him.
He's been like this for three days now. Waking up only to drink and pass out again. Kogoro checked the calendar. It's already Saturday. He then headed to take a shower. That's when he noticed that his wound is bleeding. He doesn't even want to clean it. He can bleed to death for all he care. Anyway, it's not like he still has Eri to live for.
How can it end just like that? Kogoro finally took a shower and dressed his wound. Afterwards, he returned to drinking his beer. He just wants to drown himself because she is no longer with him.
An hour passed when someone knocked on the door. Kogoro then opened it only to find Inspector Megure.
"Kogoro! What happened here?" The inspector asked seeing the clutter. "Have you been drinking? You know you shouldn't be with that wound of yours."
"I am alright. What is it that you need?" He asked irritated.
"The Chief wanted me to check on you and hopefully see you well enough to work."
"Tell the Chief I will be at work later on today." He then said.
"Mouri-san, what happened?" The inspector noticed the hate in the detective's eyes.
"Eri broke up with me, that's what happened. Unfortunately, I am not up to her standards. Who needs her anyway? I am the great Mouri Kogoro. Women drool on me!" He said filled with bitterness.
"Did you talk to her? Mouri-san, that's only your bitterness talking."
"So? Call me bitter, I don't really care. It is the truth. I love her so much. How can she do this?" Kogoro said as he threw a beer can on the wall.
"Mouri-san! Pull yourself together." The inspector really doesn't know what to say. "Just stop drinking now, Kogoro." He then called someone. Kogoro was so distracted with self-pitying that he didn't notice the inspector call Kumiko. He knows for a fact that among the girls that this detective dated, Kumiko is the closest to him.
"Mouri-san!" The make-up artist was surprised to see Kogoro in his current state. The inspector left already. "What happened?" She asked as she hugged Kogoro. His face on her chest as he sobbed.
Kogoro told the story to Kumiko including how they met, their pretense game, the friends with benefits set-up, the return of her ex, the friends with benefits set-up part 2, the confession and finally the break-up.
Kumiko just listened the way Kogoro listened to her before. Anger rose in her chest upon learning what Eri did. "Kogoro…"
"You know what? I wanted her to see that I've changed. That she changed me! That I tried my best to be a better person because of her. But she didn't want me."
"Hush now, Kogoro. Perhaps you are just not meant to be." Gently, she stroked his hair. "Relationships are trial and error. If you tried then you cried, then it's an error. After you cry then try again. You should know Kogoro because you told me that."
Kogoro ignored her though. "She never believed me. Who am I kidding anyway? I am not fit for her. She should've realized that because she can get someone better than me."
"Stop this self-pity act of yours, Kogoro. If you did those to me, I will never leave you. So what if you bedded different women before? At least when you fell in love with her, you stuck with her only. Don't waste yourself like this. You have to start your step into moving on!"
"B-but how? I love Eri so much."
"I cannot say how you will move on but I can assure you one day, someone will come into your life and will help you realize that you've moved on."
"I… I don't know Kumiko… She told me she loved me. How can she just go? I was a fool."
"Sshhh… Kogoro, don't go thinking about it anymore. Look at your wound there, the blood is seeping again, let me help you fix it and go to sleep. I will just be here just like you've been there for me."
Eri sat in front of Tobe. Since yesterday, she's been staying with him like a captive. No, he didn't touch her, at least but he was hell bent into making sure that she doesn't leave his sight.
"Tobe… what you're doing is wrong. Just let me go." Eri said not touching her food. They are inside a restaurant where Tobe use to bring her.
"Hmmph… Eri, even if I let you go now and I promise not to touch that detective of yours, I guess it's all too late. It didn't even take him a week to move on."
Tobe smirked as he saw the shock register on the lawyer's face. "W-what do you mean?"
"Why once a womanizer, always a womanizer. I have someone following him right? Well he hasn't gone out of his house but there was a sexy and beautiful woman who went in there several hours ago. She hasn't gone out yet as we speak." Another smirk flashed on the veterinarian's lips.
"You are lying!" She said sternly. "Tobe stop this lies of yours, I wouldn't believe you."
"I am not asking you to believe me, anyway. But Eri, my dear, for sure you know that he was never without a woman before. He can just get those with ease granting his reputation."
Tobe studied Eri. She is believing him. Not that he was lying. That was reported to him by the person he hired to follow Kogoro. He actually thought that the detective was in love with Eri. Seems like she was just his past time. Not that he cared. All he wants is to have Eri.
Eri did not say another word. How can he do that? Sure she broke up with him but she cannot deny feeling betrayed by Kogoro. He moved on mighty quick, didn't he? Yes she is upset! Perhaps breaking up with him was right after all granting how he can just easily lose his interest in her. Damn it all!
