Whispers

By Brian Smith

It only takes one sip,

A life lived good and right.

Anyone can falter and slip,

Now having to fight.

For some it's naive and not knowing better,

For others it's just giving in.

To a thirst that only grows wetter.

To a new life where you never see the end.

Lust, self gratification, and release,

It's what many come to seek.

For only the whispers can relieve,

A drink for many that are weak.

"You can't go on without me,"

"I'm the only one that will care"
"None of the others will see."

"It's a burden only I can help you bare."

Whispers that many of us hear inside,

A life many live and yet it's shunned.

It dulls you, makes you feel like you've died.

That life's over, it's already done.

So why fight it, just give in.
It's not over.

This isn't the end,

He loves you, even when you're not sober.

Whispers replaced by a loud echo,

Never do you walk alone,

There's a new day to start over,

Even when its says you're long gone

This can't be fought by yourself,

You're not alone like the whispers say.

Self help isn't the answer,

You can start over on this very day.

You've got a family that love you,

The Father sent his son.

When you call out his name,

You'll see the truth burning brighter than the sun.

It won't be easy, that he never said,

But you don't walk alone in this valley,

The shadows of your sin cast wide,

Eclipsed by the glory of God.

You're never given more than you can take,

But you can't with no one to lean on.

God is doing this for your sake.
So with a smile, you can go on.
