I was so mad, like, literally fuming! This is why you don't trust people, Maddie. I mentally scolded myself. I came up to the door that led to the roof, but it was locked. I tried and tried, but it wouldn't budge. "I'm sorry Miss Maddie, but I am not allowed to let you out." JARVIS said.
I turned around, even angrier than I was now. Well, at least now I know what option they decided to choose. I thought as I saw everyone, minus Thor and Loki, approach me. "Maddie, this is just a safety precaution." Steve said.
"Oh, don't worry. I understand. I guess gaining my trust was the flown out option." I snapped and most of them just looked down. "Lead the way." I sighed as they turned around and walked me down the hallway, keeping a safe distance from me because of the heat I was radiating.
We walked through the front room. I saw Thor and Loki talking, but the minute I came in, they looked at me and continued to whisper to each other.
Everyone broke off, except Tony, who I guess was leading me to my 'new' room. I was disgusted at the thought. After walking for a minute, Tony spoke up. "This isn't because we think you're Kylie. It's just for Romanoff's state of mind." He said as we approached the celled room, which actually looked similar to the one I was put in on the Hellicarrier.
"Right, because my state of mind doesn't matter. And just when I was beginning to trust all of you." I scoffed as I entered the room. Tony didn't know what to say, so he didn't say anything as Bruce closed the door from the control room.
Third Person POV
Tony walked into the control room after he walked Maddie to the cell. "You're making a huge mistake." Loki said.
"I do agree with my brother. This will only aggravate the situation." Thor said. Him and Loki were sitting in the corner.
"As if you can't already tell, she is aggravated." Clint commented.
"Well, one thing is for certain. She'll never trust us again." Bruce said.
"Let's just run the tests and be done with it." Steve said.
"Wow, she really is hot. Her body temperature is 115 degrees Fahrenheit." Tony said, reading the scanner.
"Maybe that's the key." Natasha spoke up.
"What do you mean?" Clint asked.
"Maybe her powers adjust to her body temperature." Natasha said.
"It's worth a shot." Tony said. "Lower the temp, doc. Let's see if we can get her to cool down." Bruce just nodded as he turned the dial down so the room would start freezing.
Maddie's POV
I just walked around the cell for a good ten minutes. You just had to stay, Maddie. Nice one. I had been under the radar for years, and lately I've been careless, which got me in this situation. When you have the chance, you need to run. I told myself.
I sat on the bench at the end of the room. I debated whether or not I should take a rest, but something else caught my attention: a noise. I looked around curiously as I tried to find out where it was coming from, and then I started to panic as my body noticed something; it was getting cold in here.
What are they doing?! I mentally screamed. Then I thought it could just be the AC because I was heating up the place, then the room got colder, and colder, and colder. I started to panic as I tried to heat myself up, but the room just kept getting colder. Saying I could see my breathe was an understatement.
"Guys, what are you doing?" I asked as I felt myself start to get weak. I started shooting fire everywhere, but by the time it hit something, it was so tiny that it didn't damage anything, that's how cold it was in here. "Guys, I'm serious! Stop!" I yelled. When nothing happened, I started freaking out and started hitting the door. "Let me out! Let me out!" I kept repeating and screaming.
Third Person POV
"Her body temperature is getting lower. Slowly, but it's getting there." Bruce said.
"She's having a freak out…does that mean...?" Steve began.
"Her readings are changing, that's for sure." Tony said. They watched the monitors, and then something caught their eye. Maddie's clothes, they were changing. Kind of like how Loki and Thor changed from normal clothes to their armor, but instead of flashing over, flames spread around her body and her clothes had completely changed. She wore a long sleeved, flame red colored shirt, with red shoes that looked like her converse to match. She also was wearing almost sparkling like, black shorts. The only people they knew who could do that were Loki and Thor. Never had they once seen Kylie do it, but now they did.
"It really is her." Clint realized. Everyone knew one thing: Natasha was right. Even Thor was a little confused at what was going on, but he was still certain in the back of his mind it wasn't her.
Everyone gathered around the monitor, amazed at what was happening, except for Loki. She knew she wasn't screaming because her cover was being blown. She was screaming because she was dying.
Maddie's POV
"Someone get me out! GET ME OUT NOW!" I screamed as I pounded on the door. I could feel all of the power I had inside start to come out, and my body flamed into my usually attire. I hadn't seen this in a long time. This was how I normally looked, until I tried to bottle up everything and keep myself in control. But since it was getting colder, my body adjusted to doing what it used to do naturally. I couldn't ever explain why when I fully used my powers why my attire changed, but it did. And I'm guessing it just had to do with my powers.
How cold is it now? 32? 0? I thought. No, it can't be. I can stand that weather longer than this. I thought, and then it hit me. All of those nerd sessions with Bruce and Tony finally made me realize. They're using some form of Nitrogen! Which means…. "Get me out! Let me out!" I cried as I pounded on the door. In all of the ways I could have died, I didn't think it would be locked up, where everyone thought I was someone I wasn't.
I grabbed the side of my hair in my hands as I started shaking, and just when I thought I was about to die, I felt someone grab me, and for a split second, everything around me was shrouded, like I wasn't in Stark tower anymore, but somewhere different. It felt like I had been here before. Then as soon as I felt someone grab me, the sooner I felt the outside heat. Whoever was holding me let go, and I fell on the ground as I slowly started breathing again, and warming up.
I heard someone walk beside me, and sit down against a wall. I looked up and saw…
Loki.
He was sitting down against the wall that was where the stairs from the roof were right next to me, and I could see some of the wall behind me. But instead of leaning back, I just stayed in the position I was in. I looked at him, and he looked at me back, like he was waiting for something. Once I stopped shaking from the cold, I managed to find my voice again, only to feel it was scratchy from screaming. "Why?" I asked.
"Now, I couldn't let them have all the fun, now could I?" He responded.
I looked back down on the ground. "They tried to kill me." I said more to myself.
"That seems to be a pattern with you." I heard Loki say and I just rolled my eyes.
"Do they…" I began.
"No, I have created an illusion to keep them busy." Loki said. I was curious why he would do something like this, but I just ignored the thought. I was just happy to be alive!
I was still wearing my red shirt, black shorts, and red shoes, but I needed to adjust, so I didn't even bother holding everything in. It felt good; it felt natural. But I knew it couldn't last, because then I would lose too much control, and that is when I could hurt people.
I finally felt strong enough to adjust my position, so I was leaning against the wall like Loki was, but my legs were pulled in, and I rested my arms at my sides.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Loki looking at me. He almost looked…concerned. He's just messing with your head, Maddie. Don't you remember that he tried to kill you twice? "How long does it usually take?" He asked.
"To heat up or to cool down?" I said as I looked at him.
"Both." He shrugged.
"Why do you care?"
"Just curious." He casually responded. I turned back to face in front of me as I stood up. I walked to the bar on the ledge and looked out over the city. I heard Loki stand up and walk next to me. "Are you going to leave?" He asked.
"No," I sighed, and that got his attention. "There needs to come a time where I stop running from my problems, and that day is today." I said as I walked back to the door that lead inside.
I walked down the stairs, and I could hear them all talking at the end of the hallway that lead to the main room. "Did your illusion wear off?" I asked as I turned around to look at Loki, confused to see as he wasn't there. I turned around and looked into the main room and saw Loki there, smirking. So, he pulled me out and then created an illusion. Clever. I really need to pay attention when he is there and when he wasn't. I thought as I rolled my eyes. I could feel when he was really next to me because he gave more of a colder presence, but I never seemed to notice it when it wasn't there. I made a mental note to watch out for that so I could pinpoint if I was talking to the real Loki or not.
"We're surprised your still here." Steve said as I walked in.
"Why is that? Oh, wait. I know why. Because you all tried to kill me." I snarked.
"Enough playing, Elsa, you can't trick us anymore." Tony said.
"You think I'm tricking you? Then fine. I have a better suggestion that won't result in me dying. Where's your DNA scanner?" I asked.
"What are you talking about?" Tony asked back.
"Surely you have a DNA scanner, do you not?"
"Yes, I do."
"Then..." I said as I pulled out a strand of my hair. "Scan this. I guarantee you it will say human."
"Well, it's worth a shot." Bruce said to Tony.
When Tony didn't say anything, I spoke up. "You heard the man. Lead the way." I snarked. I was super annoyed right now, and that didn't really help the whole Kylie situation. But I didn't care. They don't deserve to treat me like a monster.
Tony and Bruce walked with me down the hallway, with the Avengers and Loki lurking behind. We finally got in to his lab and they took me to a scanner and a computer in the corner. I put the piece of hair on there and the computer started scanning it. "Registered...Human." The computer said.
"See?" I said.
Everyone looked at each other; they didn't know what to say. "I'm sorry, Maddie." Natasha spoke up. Everyone was surprised, even me. "I was good friends with Kylie, and she betrayed us. I didn't want to be tricked again. And for that, I am sorry."
I smiled. I was about to say something, then the computer piped up again. "Error, origin unknown."
Everyone's eyes widened, but not as much as mine. "Does that mean...?" Clint began.
"No, we had Kylie's, Thor's, and Loki's DNA read through the scanner before, so it should have immediately picked up on it, but..." Bruce began, but the computer interrupted him.
"Re-scanning...Human." The computer said, then a few seconds later, it said "Error, origin unknown."
"This is a joke, right?" I asked, still looking at the computer, but no one could answer because they were all too interested in the computer like I was.
The computer started reading through the DNA. "Human...Unknown...Human...Unknown..." The computer kept screening back and forth, until it finally stopped on one option. "Origin of Unknown Species. No correlation found in any database."
