Ch.11-Dead Air Phone Calls

Somewhere between sleep and awake, I caught myself wishing that I wasn't in this situation. However, I knew the pain was worth it in the end. Once I held my daughter it would be.

"Danny," I mumbled, rolling onto my side.

"Yes, Jo, is something the matter?" I shook my head, a dim outline in the darkness.

"No, I was just thinking why me? Why did Jessup focus his lust on me and not somebody else?"

My co-worker chuckled, letting a delicate smile cross his lips. "Well…don't take this the wrong way, Joanne but you are an easy target." I elbowed him in his arm rather hard, my eyes shining with their trademarked irritated glint.

"What is that supposed to mean, Kaffee? I didn't present him with easy opportunities, did I?" Danny half-nodded then stopped, reconsidering his answer. I covered my face in hands, embarrassment burning my complexion. "Oh God, I really am a disgrace, aren't I?"

My friend cradled my cheeks gently in his grasp. "No, Jo, of course not, you just have to learn to be more careful." I sighed. He leaned forward and pecked me on the lips. I grinned under his mouth, gazing into his compassionate blue eyes.

"Thank you, Danny, for everything," I said, "somehow I don't think the words I love you will suffice to show my gratitude."

He smiled, "No words are needed, Joanne. I'd assist you with whatever you asked for. That's part of my devotion for you, I love you."

"Why?" I rested my head on Kaffee's chest, my expression perplexed. My co-worker cocked an eyebrow, gazing lovingly into my deep brown eyes.

"Joanne, I love you for your quick wit and personality and I don't want you to change no matter what anyone says, especially your father. He shouldn't dictate your life."

I nodded, "All right, Danny." He placed another kiss to the crown of my head. I fell into a deep sleep as the hours wore on, comforted by my friend's presence.

Light hit my closed eyelids as it streamed through the windows of Kaffee's bedroom. Groggily, I shielded my eyes, blinking the tiredness from them. "Danny, can you come here?

I heard a rich, amused chuckle close to the door. "You called, Jo?"

"How long have you been standing there?" I questioned, a sarcastic edge lacing my voice. I pushed myself up on my elbow, staring at Kaffee.

"Oh, not too long, Jo. I only came in when you started tossing and turning…"

I cursed under my breath, "Damn it!" Danny lightly rolled his eyes in my direction.

"Is anything wrong?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

"I'm just concerned about after she's born. If Jessup begins to stalk her as he's done with me. What then? I can't handle his leering eyes on her, Danny, not my daughter!" Kaffee laid down next to me, pulling closer to him. Stroking my cheek with his thumb, he shushed me tenderly.

"Joanne, there's no need to worry, I promise. I will personally smack him if he so much as looks at her." I patted my co-worker's arm, smiling at his chivalry.

"Danny, please be careful! Remember what happened last time…when you attempted to defend me?" I warned, worry coloring my tone. He flashed an almost cocky grin as he gazed into my eyes, waiting for my expression to revert back to the serene one I'd wore a moment ago. My face, however stayed in its anxious mask and Danny frowned.

"You're actually worried about me, aren't you?"

"Of course I am last time Jessup beat the hell out of you. If that happens again I don't know how I'd deal. I need you, Kaffee. You've been my support through this ordeal, the only one that I can depend on who won't abandon me," I replied tearing up slightly.

"I love you too, Jo. Have you thought of any names yet?"

I smiled, relaxing into my friend's embrace. "Yes, I was considering Lucy as her first name and Beatrice for her middle name." I glanced at him for approval. "What do you think?"

"Perfect, Jo," Danny answered. A minute later, the phone rang, I reached over to grab it.

"Hello?" The other line was silent—dead air space—I gulped, a note of hysteria in my voice. "Danny, I…I…I think Jessup is stalking your apartment." I broke into a fit of sobs, slamming the phone down on the base. My co-worker wrapped me in his arms, kissing my forehead.

"Shh shh, Joanne, it's okay. Why don't we go stay with Laurie?" I nodded shakily.

Once we arrived, I knocked on the door. Lauren opened it still clad in her bathrobe. "Jo, sis what's wrong?"

I sighed, "Jessup's stalking our apartment." Kaffee cast me a sideways look as if to say, 'it's actually my apartment, Jo.' I rolled my dark orbs, "Well, it's technically mine now by default," I muttered in an undertone.

"True, Jo," he replied with muted humor for my benefit. My sister glanced between Danny and me, measuring our expressions.

"Please come inside. You'll be safe here." I nodded. My friend weaved his fingers through mine, offering me a warm grin. We walked into Laurie's living room; I dropped onto the couch, thoroughly exhausted. The phone rang and I tensed. I watched as Lauren went to receive the verdict. "Oh hello, Sam, do you have any idea what time it is?"

Our co-worker chuckled. "Yes, Laurie, I do. I'm sorry, how's Jo?" My eyebrow arched upward in suspicion. Rising to my feet, with some minor difficultly, I walked over to my sister and put my ear against the receiver to listen.

"Sam, how did you know already? Are you stalking me too?"

He sighed, voice strained and weary. "No, but since you are like a sister to me I figured I'd better check on you."

I beamed, "Thank you, Sam. I appreciate it." I felt Danny's arm wrap around, guiding me back to the sofa. Nonchalantly, I shrugged it off, "Kaffee, I'm fine," I persisted.

"No you're not, Jo. You're exhausted." I attempted to shake my head but it fell limp onto his shoulder. My friend chuckled. "Told you, Joanne. You need to rest." Any trace of humor in his voice vanished when he said I should rest. He was concerned about my well being. Without another word, Danny scooped me up in his strong, comforting embrace, carrying me to the guest room. Laying me down on the bed, he tenderly kissed my forehead, pushing a few flyaway hairs from my face. "Sleep well, Joanne, I love you." I sighed softy as a reply, my breathing even.

My co-worker gazed achingly at my unconscious form. After a couple of minutes, Danny laid down beside me. He wished that there wasn't so many strings and red tape to cut through. That Jessup would learn to keep his hands to himself and not touch something that would never be his—a person that would never be his.

Two actually, he mused. His thoughts drifting to Lucy who was not yet born. I'll protect both of you, I promise. Kaffee hoped that Jessup would back off soon and if he wouldn't he'd force him to that was a promise he intended to keep.
