Chapter 11
Haley had been in her room for the past few hours. She had gone to see Nathan and come back with tears and gone straight up to her room. Matt was very worried about her. He wondered what had happened.
Matt looked at his sister's door and knew he needed to know what had happened.
"Hi." Nathan said when he opened the door. "Don't hit me."
Matt smirked and nodded. "No. Again, I will not hit you. But I do want to talk to you." He said. "Can I come in?"
Nathan nodded. "I suppose." He put his head down and sighed. He shook his head. He was not looking forward to this conversation. "I'm sorry by the way. Not that's my fault."
"Just tell me what happened." Matt said.
"Haley?" Nathan asked as he watched Haley sit up. They had just made love and she immediately sat up. "If I did anything to upset or hurt you—"
Haley shook her head. "No. It's not that."
"Then what?" Nathan asked sitting up. "What is it?"
"Me." she said. "Because of me, you've had to endure so much. And I can't help but feel responsible for you."
"Hales.
"I'm okay." He went to touch her but she backed off. "I think we should break up."
"She broke up with you?" Matt asked. "Why would she do that?"
"She doesn't want to make my life any worse off than usual." He shrugged. "And I don't know what to do."
Matt could see his face and how sad he was. "I could talk to her."
Nathan shook his head. "No. No. If Haley wants this, then maybe its for the best. If she doesn't want to be with me, then she doesn't want to be with me." He shrugged.
"Fine. I'll go." Matt said. He looked around one last time and exited his apartment.
Nathan sat down on the couch and closed his eyes.
"Nathan, there's no discussing it." Haley said wiping away tears. She got up from the bed and started to put on her clothes. Nathan got up and started to do the same.
"Haley, can you at least give me a good reason why?"
Haley shook her head. "Nathan, just let it go. After all, you got what you really wanted from me." She put on her jacket and headed for the door. Nathan rushed and got to the door before her. "Nathan, just let me go."
"Tell me that you don't love me. That's the only way I will let you leave."
Haley didn't say anything. She couldn't. "I don't love you." She said with tears rolling down her face. "I don't love you."
Nathan shook his head and wiped the tears from his eyes. "God Haley, why did you have to break my heart?"
One Week Later
Nathan sat on the couch as Lucas opened the door. "Geez, Nathan." The place looked a mess. "Suddenly Haley dumps you and now you turn into a pig?"
"Haley always cleaned the apartment. Now she's gone." He slumped over so he was now laying down. "She's gone."
Lucas started to clean up and looked over at his brother. "Come on, you've become a pussy." He threw a sponge at him when he got no response. "Matt asked me to look out for Haley and I promised her not to tell you this but—"
"But what?" Nathan asked getting up suddenly. "But what?" He was suddenly getting very excited.
"She still loves you. She's just angry with herself." He gestured to the bedroom.
"Oh." Nathan got it. "She's—" He sighed. "Oh."
"Yeah." He rolled his eyes. "So if you want her back, deal with it."
The next day at school, Nathan went to find Haley at the tutor center. "Haley, can we talk?" He closed the door.
Haley looked up from her spot at one of the tables. "Sure, five minutes." she pushed aside her textbooks
Nathan nodded. "Okay. I know the real reason why you dumped me. The sex."
Haley's eyes went wide. "What?"
Nathan sat down next to her. "Tell me that it wasn't."
Haley nodded. "That and Eddie got to me. Said he was disappointed that I ave it up so early on." She shook her head. "And I started to regret my decision."
"Then we don't have to do that." He shook his head. "Okay. I was never into you for that reason. We don't have to do anything. If you want to take a step back, we can. I'm fine with that."
Haley shook her head. "Really?"
"Really."
Haley nodded. "Okay." She smiled. "We can get back together."
"Good." He smiled. He leaned over and gave her a kiss. He was so happy to hear that.
