Episode 11
SCENE 1
(Camera fades in from black on the café of the hospital. Gel, Darryl and Kayla are sharing their breakfast, but they are all watching KC, Cloe, Patsy and Paul at another table.)
Gel: He's been quick to forget everyone else, huh?
Kayla: They're his friends. Everyone thought they were dead.
Gel: So? I'm sick of them getting all the attention.
Kayla: Why do you want KC's attention anyway.
Gel: Not KC's. Just in general.
(Darryl grins and puts an arm around her.)
Darryl: You have my attention.
(Kayla rolls her eyes as Gel kisses him on the cheek.)
Gel: I just don't like how they walk in here and everybody treats them like queens.
Kayla: If I didn't know better, I'd say you're jealous.
Gel: Don't be stupid, Kayla.
Darryl: He has been hanging around them a lot. Maybe he likes one of them.
Gel: You think?
Darryl: It's probably Patsy. She's hot.
(Both girls turn to him, Kayla with a look of disbelief and amusement, Gel with a cold stare. She shrugs his arm off and huffs.)
Darryl: What?
Kayla (sighs): Oh Darryl...
Darryl: What's wrong?
Gel (pointedly): She's not hot!
Kayla: Well, she's pretty. They both are.
(Gel glares at her, which only makes Kayla laugh. She raises her hands in defence and walks away.)
Darryl: Babe, don't be like that. You know, you're still the hottest girl around.
Gel: Of course I am.
(She crosses her arms and looks away from him. Darryl seems baffled by her anger, but then goes back to eating his breakfast. Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 2
(Trudy and Ruby are in Trudy's room. They are going through clothes for the party, holding an outfit to their body, then throwing it away when it's not quite what they've been looking for.)
Trudy: It's ridiculous, but I'm so happy about this party.
Ruby: I know exactly what you mean. This is exactly what I need right now.
(Trudy holds up a short white skirt and a tight white and pink shirt.)
Trudy: What do you think?
(Ruby shakes her head.)
Ruby: The shirt is not you. And maybe the skirt is a little too short.
(Trudy looks down at the clothes and considers Ruby's opinion, then she throws them on the bed with a nod.)
Trudy: You're right. I think I'll just wear some pants instead.
(While Trudy rummages in her closet, the camera pans around to show Amber entering the room. She strides over to the pile of discarded clothes and finds a loose red dress and holds it up to Ruby.)
Amber: This one would look good on you.
Ruby: I don't know.
(She holds it up to her body, but doesn't seem convinced. Trudy emerges from her closet and nods in approval.)
Trudy: Amber is right, you should wear that.
Ruby: Well... okay.
Amber (grins): Ram's going to be so angry about his house arrest, when he sees you in that.
Ruby: Good!
Trudy: Have you talked to him since?
Ruby: Not really. I'm still mad at him.
Trudy: I don't understand how you can stay with him at all, but that's your business. (pauses) Actually I've been alone for so long, I wouldn't let a guy go, if I had one.
(Amber and Ruby laugh at that.)
Amber: Hopefully you'll find someone without a past like Ram.
Trudy: And one, who's not in love with you.
(Amber laughs dryly and quickly goes back to looking through the clothes to avoid this conversation.)
Ruby: Did you fight over a guy?
Trudy: Long time ago.
(She waves it off, already regretting she brought the topic up in the first place.)
SCENE 3
(The party is also topic #1 in the park, where Ty and Lottie are watching the kids in the sandbox.)
Lottie: Are you going?
Ty: I guess. Although I haven't really been to a party before.
Lottie: What?
Ty (shrugs): There was always something going on and I don't think four people make for a great party.
(Brady looks up from her sand cakes.)
Brady: We are four people.
Ty: Yes, we are.
Brady: So we can't have a party?
Lottie: We can have a private party.
Brady: But Ty said, that you couldn't have a party with just four people.
Lottie: Ty doesn't know, what he's talking about.
(Bray Jr laughs loudly and accidentally destroys his own sand cakes while crawling closer to them.)
Bray Jr: Mummy says that. She says Lex don't know what he's talking about.
(The others laugh at that.)
Lottie: Well, that's true.
Ty: But don't say that to Lex.
Bray Jr: Why?
Brady: Because he's the angry man. Don't tease the angry man.
Ty: Your cousin is very smart; you should listen to her.
(Brady looks at Bray Jr smugly.)
Lottie: Anyway, if you're going too, who's looking after the kids?
Ty: Ellie and Sammy, I think. I thought you'd stay too.
Lottie: No, Cara will just make fun of me. She already thinks I'm mothering Sammy. (huffs) Which is so not true.
Ty: Cara doesn't know, what it's like to really care about someone.
Lottie: I wish, Sammy would just come with us. By now I don't think he'll ever leave the hospital again.
Bray Jr: Sammy is scared.
Brady (nods): He says, the world is scary.
Ty: Do you think so too?
Brady: No. I met you in the world.
(Ty ruffles her hair, which makes her shriek and squirm away from him.)
Brady: Not my hair.
Lottie: Looks like we got another Gel in the making.
Brady: Gel is pretty.
Lottie (mutters under breath): And a pain in the ass.
(Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 4
(Camera cuts to Ram sitting at the computer in his room and typing furiously away. He doesn't react, when there's a knock on the door, not even when Jack enters anyway.)
Jack: What are you so busy with?
Ram: Coding.
Jack: For what?
(Ram rolls his eyes and turns around.)
Ram: Just a little something. It's not like I have much else to do these days.
Jack: You mean, because nobody is speaking to you?
Ram: Got it in one. (sarcastically) You're so smart.
Jack: You should still leave your room once in a while. The others think you're up to something.
Ram: It's just a game. And I don't need to go out and have them look at me like they do.
Jack: Well, maybe you should get out tonight then, when everyone's at the party.
Ram: Ah, the party. You going?
Jack (shrugs): I don't know. I don't think I can get Ellie to come.
Ram: And you do what Blondie says? I'm sure Ruby will still go even though I can't.
Jack: You guys are still together then?
Ram: I'm in the doghouse, I guess. She'll come around, when she's ready.
(Ram laughs dryly and turns back to the computer.)
Ram: Look, we don't need to do this. I know, everyone tells you that we are basically friends, but we're really not. So we don't need to talk about girlfriends and feelings and you don't need to pretend that you're not mad at me like the others.
(Jack sighs and heads towards the door.)
Jack: Suit yourself, Ram. These days you shouldn't be picky with your company.
(Jack leaves and Ram pulls a face as he goes back to work.)
Ram (mockingly): Suit yourself, Ram.
(Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 5
(Trudy is in her room, wearing a pretty dress, she picked out for the party. The door to her room is open and we see Jack and Ellie walk past. He has his arm around her, while she carries Wylla. Trudy watches them, the smile falling from her face.)
FLASHBACK
(Early season 5 with Jay and Trudy in bed, kissing.)
Trudy: How can I be so unhappy one minute and then so happy the next?
Jay (chuckles): So you didn't wake up and think: "Ahhh"
Trudy (giggles): No! Did you?
Jay: Oh no.
(He kisses her again.)
FLASHBACK ENDS
(As tears start to well up in her eyes, Trudy pulls off the dress and puts her regular clothes on.)
Trudy: It's not fair. Why do I always have to be alone?
(She wraps her arms around herself, not able to stop the tears. Camera pans around to show Ryan walking past. He hears her crying and stops.)
Ryan (softly): Trudy?
(She jumps and tries to hide her tears but to no avail. Ryan closes the door behind him and walks over to her.)
Ryan: Hey, what's wrong?
Trudy: I'm just being stupid. It's nothing.
Ryan: It has to be something. You can tell me.
Trudy: It's so silly. I was with Ruby and Amber earlier and we talked about their relationships and it just feels like... like everyone is shacking up. I just... Where does that leave me? And tonight there's the party and they'll all go off and dance with their partners and I'll be stuck with Lottie and Cara
Ryan: That's not silly at all.
(He pulls her in for a hug and a slight smile appears on her face.)
Ryan: On the bright side, I think Lex is still available.
Trudy (laughs): I don't think I could be that desperate.
Ryan: You know, we could always go together. To the party, I mean.
(Trudy steps away from him, eyeing him warily.)
Trudy: As a date?
Ryan (quickly): No, no! Just to have fun together. And when everyone goes off to slow dance, I'll keep you company.
Trudy: That's very sweet, Ryan.
Ryan: You haven't seen me dance yet. I'm awful.
Trudy (smiles): I'll guess, I'll find out tonight.
Ryan: That's a yes then?
Trudy: Yes. We'll go together. As friends.
Ryan: As friends.
(Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 6
(Most of the Mall Rats are scattered around the tables in the café, eating lunch. Patsy, Cloe, Paul and Cal are sitting together. Cloe is trying her best to pick up on sign language but is really struggling.)
Cal (to Paul): Do you want to go to the party?
Paul: Not sure. Could be fun, but could be a huge pain too.
Cloe: Wait, what was that last one?
(Cal repeats the sign slowly for her.)
Cal: Pain.
Cloe: Oh, thanks. Why?
Paul: It's going to be dark, making it harder to read lips. And I don't want to make anyone translate for me.
Cal: I wouldn't mind.
(Patsy hasn't been paying much attention, but is instead watching the other Mall Rats. She turns back to the others now.)
Patsy: Do you think, we should have dates? All the couples are going together, and I also heard Trudy and Ryan are going together.
Cloe: Who said that?
Patsy (shrugs): I might have overheard them talking in her room.
Paul: I don't think dates are necessary.
Patsy: It could be fun though.
Cloe: Who would you ask anyway? KC?
Patsy (snorts): No.
(She looks over Cloe's shoulder, a mischievous smile on her face. Camera follows her gaze and lands on Ty, who's sitting at a table with Sammy, Lottie, Brady and Cara. Paul's face drops, when he realizes, who she's looking at. Cal, catching this, turns around to see too.)
Cal: Ty?
Patsy: He's cute, isn't he?
Paul: I don't know if he's going. He doesn't like crowds.
Patsy: I'll just ask him.
(She gets up and confidently walks over to him. Everyone is now watching with interest, but Patsy doesn't care. When Ty notices all the eyes on him, he starts fidgeting and doesn't know where to look. Patsy stops next to him.)
Patsy: Ty, are you going to the party tonight?
(He looks over to Lottie for help, who nods encouragingly.)
Ty (softly): I guess.
Patsy: Fantastic! I think we should go together.
Ty: Together?
Patsy: As a date.
(Ty's eyes grow wide and his pale skin turns a slight red.)
Ty (in a squeaky voice): A date?
Patsy (nods): It'll be fun.
Ty: Uh... I didn't know th-that we should... that we... dates?
Patsy: It's not necessary, I just thought the two of us could have a lot of fun.
Ty: Oh... I guess.
Patsy (smiles): Great! That's a yes then. See you tonight.
(She struts back to her table with a victorious grin, while Ty is trying to figure out what just happened. Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 7
(Later in the day, Amber and Bray are lying in bed, the blanket pulled up around their chests to hide their nudity. Amber brushes a stray hair out of Bray's face and he leans in to kiss her.)
Amber: We really should start to get ready now.
Bray: Mhm... that's what you said half an hour ago.
Amber (giggles): And I would be done by now, if you hadn't insisted to help me out of the clothes instead of helping me into them.
Bray (grins): I just saved you from waiting on the others for hours.
Amber: So it was a completely selfless deed?
Bray: Maybe not completely.
(He pulls her closer, kissing her on the temple, then the nose and lastly the lips. She melts into him, deepening the kiss and rolling on top of him. Bray slides one of his hands underneath the blanket and Amber starts to slowly pull away. When she speaks, she mumbles against his lips.)
Amber: Bray, no... We really need to...
Bray: No, we don't.
(She gives him a quick peck, rolls off him and grabs for her clothes, putting them on as she gets out of bed.)
Amber: Yes, we do.
Bray (huffs): I wouldn't mind skipping the party and just stay in bed with you all night.
(Folding his arms behind his head, he looks up at Amber with a smirk.)
Amber: Sounds wonderful. Trust me, I'd rather spend the night with you then having to endure Tilly again. Any chance, she won't be there?
Bray: Don't think so. One can always hope.
Amber: Today she gave a kid three weeks cleaning duty for steeling food. Rotten food at that.
(She throws Bray his shirt and he starts to get dressed too.)
Amber: I believe she took the job Law purely to bully people.
Bray: Probably. Cloud likes to oppose any of our ideas. Unless it's a party. He was very happy about tonight, so I think there's a good chance Tilly will be there.
Amber (groans): As long as I don't have to talk to her
(Bray wraps his arms around Amber from behind, placing his chin on her shoulder.)
Bray: I'll protect you.
(He kisses her neck softly and camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 8
(In Gel and Darryl's room, Gel is already putting the finishing touches on her outfit and make-up. Kayla is sitting at the dressing table, doing her nails.)
Kayla: Do you think, I should've gotten a date? I didn't think anything of it until Patsy asked Ty publicly.
Gel: I think you should definitely have gotten a date. But do I think you need one for the party? No.
Kayla: Good... I wouldn't even know who to ask.
Gel: What about Cal?
Kayla: I couldn't. I'm lucky he still wants to be friends with me.
(Gel turns around to look at Kayla, who has stopped painting her nails and just stares into space. Gel grins and goes back to applying lip gloss.)
Gel: Oh you mean because you lied about the kiss.
Kayla (absent-mindedly): Yes.
(It takes a few seconds for her to snap out of it, but then she quickly shakes her head.)
Kayla: I didn't lie about anything. Ugh... I should never have told you about that.
Gel: Yeah right, as if that was ever an option. Are you seriously going to tell me, you don't like him? Not even a little bit?
Kayla: Doesn't matter now.
Gel: Then tell me again, why you even told him that?
(Gel finishes her make-up and walks over to paint Kayla's nails for her.)
Kayla: Because I got freaked out. I really didn't mean anything by the kiss, but I wouldn't mind doing it again. But he just... He was too much.
Gel: I'm telling you, he's still completely into you. So if you want to kiss him tonight, do it.
Kayla: But that's mean. I know he wants us to be more, but I'm not sure I want that. I shouldn't encourage it.
Gel (sighs): Kayla, sometimes you just want to have fun and then you need to take what you want. And if what you want happens to be a handsome, older guy, who plays the guitar and can sing like an angel, then so be it.
(Gel finishes with the nails and puts the bottle back to the dozen others on the dressing table.)
Gel: There, all done.
Kayla: Thanks. At least for the nails.
Gel: I just gave you great advice, if you don't take it, that's your loss.
(Gel struts off camera as a smile starts playing around Kayla's lips. Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 9
(Paul and Cal are in their room, changing into their clothes for the party. Paul huffs and sits down on his bed, still only half dressed.)
Paul: I can't believe that happened! Why would she want to go with Ty? I haven't seen them talk all that much since she's been here.
Cal: I guess, twins share the same taste in men?
(Paul glares at him, clearly not up for jokes right now.)
Cal: Why don't you just tell her that you like him?
Paul: Because I think there are better ways to tell my sister I'm gay. (pauses) I didn't think he'd say yes. He's not the guy, who goes on dates.
Cal: I know you really like him, but maybe he's just in to her? Your sister is a beautiful girl.
Paul: I know that. That's what makes me hate this even more.
(He runs his hands through his hair and gets up to finally put on his shirt.)
Cal: I know it sucks. Unrequited crushes suck so bad.
Paul: He could at least have been gay. I was sure, he was interested in me too.
(Cal gives him a friendly pat on the shoulder.)
Cal: Guess, he's just a friendly guy then.
Paul: At least I didn't make a move on him. That would've been embarrassing.
(Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 10
(Patsy and Cloe are getting ready in Cloe's room, Patsy putting a lot more effort into it than Cloe is. She's fixing up her hair one last time, while Cloe sits on the bed and waits for her.)
Cloe: Tell me again, why you needed to have a date?
(Patsy rolls her eyes and ignores the question.)
Cloe: Okay, okay, I get why you picked Ty. He is cute, if a little bit bland. But why the date?
Patsy: Because I thought it would be fun. It's a bit like prom, like in the movies. You should've gotten one too.
Cloe: And who would I have asked?
Patsy (shrugs): There's always KC.
Cloe: Yeah, I think I'll pass.
Patsy: He's not as bad as he was in the past.
Cloe: No, but I still wouldn't want to date him. Although your idea doesn't sound half bad. We are missing out on all those normal things.
Patsy: You wouldn't have to date him. Just this once. Or you ask Paul or Cal.
Cloe: Actually out of those three KC is the best option. Nothing against Paul, he's good looking and all, but I don't know any sign language and he refuses to talk. Has he told you why yet?
Patsy (shakes her head): No. I don't get why he would want to make his life harder like that.
(Cloe stands up and grabs for her jacket.)
Cloe: Guess being stubborn runs in the family.
(Patsy catches up to her and the two leave the room together.)
Patsy (off camera): You say that as if it's a bad thing.
(Camera cuts to next scene)
SCENE 11
(Camera cuts to Ruby walking down the corridor to Ram's room. She's all done up for the party, looking absolutely stunning and she knows it. She enters his room without knocking, startling Ram, who's been tapping away at his computer. He's about to complain, but the words get stuck in his throat when he sees Ruby.)
Ruby (smirks): Like it?
(Ram walks over to her, not taking his eyes off her for a second.)
Ram: You look... Are you wearing that to the party?
Ruby: No, that's how I dress every day. Of course I'm wearing it to the party.
Ram: I don't like it.
(Ruby takes a step back from him, crossing her arms in front of her chest.)
Ruby: Oh really? Your eyes were falling out a second ago.
Ram: Sure, but I don't like you going out like that. You'll have guys flirting with you.
Ruby: Well, it's your own fault, you can't go. Stop being such a jealous baby and tell me, I'm looking great.
Ram: I'm not being a baby! You look amazing, it's a legit concern.
Ruby: Even if somebody is going to hit on me, I still have a say in this. How about trying to have some faith in me, Ram?
Ram: Easy to say. I haven't seen you in the last few days.
Ruby: You know what, screw you! I'm going to have a great time tonight and you're not going to ruin it for me.
(She turns around and stalks out of the room, leaving Ram behind. Ram angrily falls into his chair as camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 12
(Ty is pacing in his room, while Lottie sits on his bed trying to figure out which hat to wear with her party outfit.)
Lottie: Somebody is nervous about his date.
Ty (rambling): I… I don't even know Patsy, and I haven't been on any dates ever. What do you even do on dates? I haven't been to a party like this either. I don't know what she's expecting…. I think I'm going to puke.
(Lottie jumps up to grabs his hands, laughing, and pulls him to his bed.)
Lottie: Relax. You worry way too much.
Ty: That's my thing. I worry.
Lottie: Yeah, no kidding.
Ty: You and Sammy are together now, right?
Lottie (laughs hysterically): Are you really asking me for advice? Really?
Ty (turns a bright red in embarrassment): You're right. This is ridiculous. Maybe I should just not go.
Lottie: And stand her up? Don't think that's a good idea. Why did you say yes, if you don't want to go?
Ty: I was put on the spot. (groans) I don't like being around lots of people, why would I even go to a party?
Lottie: When we talked earlier, you said, you were going to go.
Ty: Now I don't want to anymore.
Lottie: Well, now it's too late.
(She grabs her usual denim hat and puts it on and hits him with one of the other hats.)
Lottie: Don't be a jerk and go on that date. If it goes horribly, well, then you just won't go on another date and maybe you'll have fun. Patsy looks like she's fun. I mean, you're good friends with Paul and they are twins, how different can they be?
(Ty looks at her with raised eyebrows.)
Lottie (grins): Okay, weak argument. Doesn't matter anyway, because you're going!
(She slips out of his room, leaving a desperate Ty to stare blankly after her.)
SCENE 13
(Lex is busy in his room trying to find the perfect feather to put in his hair for the party, while Ryan watches him do so in mild amusement.)
Lex: Tell me again, why you didn't want to go stag to this party?
Ryan (shrugs): It was a spontaneous thing. I saw Trudy crying and I went in to comfort her and I just thought it could be nice to go with her.
Lex: So you did it out of pity?
Ryan: I wouldn't say that. We're going as friends to have a good time. She'll probably safe me from standing around awkwardly.
Lex: Ryan (he turns around and shoots Ryan the most disbelieving look he can manage) It's a party. There are going to be lots of girls, some booze. You could get laid tonight, but instead you'll try to stop mopey Trudy from crying. You just ruined your whole night.
Ryan (rolls his eyes): Well maybe, I don't want to get laid.
Lex (snorts): Yeah right.
Ryan: I'm not like you Lex.
Lex: Oh, I know that. I do look a lot better. Thank God.
Ryan: That's…
Lex (waves him off): Whatever. Do you like her or something? Trudy? Crazy, whiny Trudy? I mean, if you were to get with her, you could get Amber right after.
Ryan: Just shut up, Lex. Trudy and I are friends and she's not crazy.
Lex: Tell yourself that. She has crazy eyes.
(Ryan gets up and heads for the door)
Ryan: I'll see you around.
Lex (shouts after him): Somebody can't handle the truth. (mutters to himself) First Salene, now Trudy. Guess his type is "crazy with problems".
(Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 14
(In their room, Ellie is going through a couple of Jack's shirts, while he's sitting on their bed waiting for her to finally pick one. Wylla is lying on the bed, chewing on one of her toys. Jack gently strokes her head with the thick, dark hair, but then rubs his bare arms and looks to Ellie.)
Jack: It's getting cold, Ellie.
Ellie: Don't be such a baby. I have to make an important decision.
Jack: You could just have let me wear the shirt I like.
Ellie: No, that one doesn't suit you.
Jack: Thanks. You never complained about it before.
Ellie: Because you haven't tried to wear it outside before.
(Jack frowns at her, but before he can say anything, Ellie throws a dark blue shirt at him with a bright smile.)
Ellie: That one.
(Just then a fuming Ruby storms into their room. Jack quickly puts on the shirt as Ellie walks towards her with a concerned look.)
Ellie: What happened?
Ruby: Ram! He's such a jerk!
Jack: What else is new?
(Both girls glare at him and he raises his hands in defence. He turns around to play with Wylla and lets the girls talk.)
Ellie: What happened?
Ruby: He basically said that I can't go to the party like this, because I'll cheat on him. He's so pathetic. And then he blames me for not seeing him, when he's the one sulking in his room like some big baby.
Ellie: You don't deserve that, Ruby. You're way better than Ram and his foul attitude.
Ruby: I know none of you really like Ram, but I've seen a side of him you haven't. He's not a bad guy.
Ellie: That's hard to believe, but if he makes you happy that's all that matters. Here's the plan: You look amazing, so you'll go to that party, forget about Ram and just have fun tonight.
(Ruby smiles and takes Ellie's hands)
Ruby: I would have more fun if you were there.
Ellie: Well, someone has to take care of the kids and I don't think Ram or Sammy would do a very good job.
(She turns back to Jack, who has clearly been listening to their conversation, but now quickly pretends he hasn't. Ellie smiles.)
Ellie: And I'll lend you my man.
Jack: Don't I have a say in this?
Ellie: Are you saying, you don't want to go with Ruby?
Jack: I'd rather go with you.
Ruby: Besides, I don't need an escort. You can keep your man.
(Ellie rolls her eyes and goes to grab Jack's hand and pull him towards Ruby.)
Ellie: Whatever. You're still going to the same party, so go and have fun. Get a drink on me or something.
(She continues to push both of them out of the door and closes it behind them. Smiling, she sits next to Wylla.)
Ellie (softly): Now it's just the two of us. This place is going to be as quiet as ever tonight. Well, at least until they come stumbling back drunk.
(Camera cuts to next scene)
SCENE 15
(Camera cuts to the Mall Rats walking in a big group to the party. They are roughly divided by age with Bray, Lex, Amber, Trudy, Ryan, Jack and Ruby a little behind the others. Gel is dancing around Darryl, Kayla and KC. Patsy is walking happily with Ty, while Lottie and Cara are making faces at all of them behind their backs.)
Amber: I think this party is a really good idea. We all needed this after the time we've had. (nods to the younger Mall Rats) They needed it.
Lex: I only need a drink and a girl.
Bray: We all know, you're a man of simple pleasures, Lex.
Trudy (to Amber): I think you're right. It's good for them to experience parties and dating like this. It's just like in the movies we used to watch.
Jack: You sound like we're ancient in comparison to them.
Trudy: Well, no, but we had the chance to experience those things before the Virus.
Lex (grins at Jack): Not all of us.
Jack (rolls his eyes): Very funny, Lex. I wasn't very interested in dances and prom when I was 14.
Ruby: What changed?
Jack: Nothing. This isn't a dance or prom, this is just a party.
Amber: I don't think everyone sees it that way. Patsy and Gel sure don't.
Trudy: They're just having fun. The party can be whatever they want it to be.
Lex: Well, it's definitely not prom for me.
Bray: Of course not, or else you'd be the loser without a date
(He grins and puts an arm around Amber. The rest giggles, while Lex scowls at them. Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 16
(Back at the hospital, Sammy is lying on his bed and flicking through an old comic book. The place is eerily quiet without the majority of the Mall Rats there. With a sigh, Sammy flips over and stares at the ceiling.)
(Voice over from season 4)
Mouse: I don't like it.
Sammy: Shh, I'm watching it.
Mouse: Is it over soon?
Sammy: Quiet. It's just getting to a good part.
Mouse: What is this film, anyway?
Sammy: I've told you three times. "Attack of the Living Dead".
(Camera zooms in on Sammy's face as he silently starts to cry)
(Camera fades into a flashback of Sammy and Mouse with the Anarchists. Mouse is crying and struggling against the grip of the Anarchists. Her eyes lock with Sammy, a silent plea. Sammy tries to get to her and help, but the Anarchists are stronger and dragging him away. No amount of fighting and screaming helps and in the end all he can do is cry.)
Brady (VO): Sammy?
(The room in the hospital comes back into view. Brady is now standing beside the bed, watching Sammy worriedly.)
Brady: Are you sad?
Sammy: Go away, Brady.
Brady: But everyone is away. I'm bored.
Sammy: I don't want to play with you.
(Brady crawls onto the bed and snuggles into Sammy's side.)
Brady: Okay.
(Sammy brushes the tears from his face and looks down at her.)
Sammy: I want to be alone.
Brady: No.
Sammy: Brady, get out.
Brady: No! You cry. You are sad all the time.
Sammy: I don't want to talk about it. Especially not with a 5-year-old.
Brady: Talk to Mouse or Salene. Mummy says sometimes it is easy to talk to people who are not there.
Sammy: That's stupid. Then you don't need to talk at all.
Brady: It's what Mummy says.
(They stay like this for a while, neither one saying anything. Eventually Sammy sits up and Brady follows.)
Sammy: Want to go see Mouse?
(She nods and the two of them leave as the camera fades out.)
SCENE 17
(Camera pans in from black on the school's gym, where the city leaders usually meet. But now it's crowded with kids from different tribes. There's disco light and loud music. Camera pans over the dancing crowd to some of the Mall Rats standing close to the bar. KC, Cloe, Gel and Darryl are getting drinks, but Patsy is more focused on the dance floor. She turns to Ty.)
Patsy: We should dance!
Ty: Dance? I don't know. I'm really no-...
Patsy: Oh come on, it's not that hard.
KC: And they're playing a slow song. They're easy. (He leans closer to Ty and speaks lowly so the others won't hear) And you get to be a little handsy.
(Ty looks from him to Patsy, a completely new panic in his eyes. KC just grins and pats his shoulder.)
Patsy: He's right.
(She grabs Ty's arm and drags him to the dancefloor. When they find a spot in between all the other couples, she puts her arms around his neck.)
Patsy: Don't worry, it's easy. Now put your hands on my hips.
(Ty hesitates. The smile on Patsy's face starts to falter, Ty notices and quickly obliges. They start swaying to the music. Patsy is relaxed and having fun, while Ty is rigid, his eyes always scanning the room. For a second he makes eye contact with Paul at the bar, who watches them with a blank expression before turning away.)
Patsy: You're not much of a talker, are you?
Ty: Sorry. I'm not good with people.
Patsy: That's okay. Actually I think it's cute. And definitely better than someone who's always mouthing off. Like KC.
Ty: I guess.
Patsy: You're not uncomfortable around me, are you?
Ty (shakes his head): No, no, no, no! No, you're… I'm not.
Patsy (giggles): One No would've been enough, but I'm glad because I really like you.
Ty: You do?
Patsy: Of course. What's not to like? You're nice, considerate, smart and hot.
Ty (coughs): H-hot?
Patsy: And modest apparently. Out of all the guys at the hospital, you're definitely the hottest.
Ty: You… uh… you're really pre-… beautiful too.
(Patsy smiles and rests her head against Ty's shoulder. Ty still looks very uncomfortable, but a small smile spreads across his lips as the camera pans out.)
SCENE 18
(Camera moves in on Ruby and Jack sitting on a sofa in one of the corners. They both have drinks in their hands and watching the others, but neither of them seems to be having fun. Another guy approaches them, but Ruby waves him off before he even gets to speak.)
Jack: That was the fourth guy and we've only been here half an hour.
Ruby: Mhm.
Jack: Guess Ram was kind of right.
Ruby (coldly): What's that supposed to mean? I haven't talked to a single one of them.
Jack: Hey, I was just joking.
(There's an awkward pause while they both sip on their drinks.)
Jack: But Ellie had a point, you know. You don't seem very happy with him.
Ruby: Everybody fights. You and Ellie fight all the time.
Jack: Yes, about stupid stuff and now about Wylla, but accusing you of wanting to cheat on him is different. He doesn't trust you.
Ruby: Well, that's who Ram is. He's been stabbed in the back multiple times and now he's cooped up in the hospital. I can't really blame him.
Jack: Okay, I'm just saying, a relationship should make you happy.
(Jack gets up and walks over to Amber and Bray. Ruby looks down at her drink as she thinks about Jack's words. Camera cuts to next scene.)
SCENE 19
(Kayla, Cal, Paul and Cara are watching Ty and Patsy dance. Kayla glances at Cal next to her a few times.)
Cal: He looks uncomfortable.
Cara: It's Ty. He always looks uncomfortable.
Paul: He doesn't like crowds. I'm surprised he wanted to come in the first place.
Cal: I'm surprised you wanted to come too.
(Paul shoots him a look.)
Cal (to Cara): Why aren't you dancing? I thought you'd love this.
Cara: I'm having fun. Just waiting for Lottie to come back from the loo. I'm going to show her some moves.
Kayla: Lottie? I didn't know she liked to dance.
Cara (coldly): Since when do you know Lottie so well?
Cal: Cara, come on.
Kayla (puts a hand on his shoulder to stop him): Stop. It's okay. Do you want to dance?
Cal: Uh… sure.
(He takes her hand and they join the other people on the dance floor. Cara snorts and turns to Paul.)
Cara: I can't believe her. She's totally using him.
Paul: He likes her and I think they talked it out. Friends can dance too.
Cara: Sure, but see the way he's looking at her? She knows that and she's the type of person to take advantage of that and Cal is the type of person, who lets her.
Paul: You don't know Kayla.
Cara (huffs): Neither does Cal.
Paul (smiles): Stop it. Come on, let's get something to drink.
(He puts an arm around her and steers her towards the bar as the camera pans out.)
SCENE 20
(Camera pans to KC, Cloe, Gel and Darryl, who are still standing at the bar. Just as the camera settles on them, Gel whispers into Darryl's ear and they walk towards the dance floor.)
KC: Oh come on, don't leave us hanging too.
Darryl: Gel wants to dance.
KC (mutters): And what Gel says, goes.
(Once Gel and Darryl are out of the shot, Cloe takes Darryl's place next to KC.)
Cloe: Are they always like that?
KC: You mean, attached at the hip? Ever since they got together.
Cloe: Must be nice to have someone like that, though. You know, someone who doesn't get tired of having you around.
KC: Sure, but I don't know if that is even healthy. Besides, aren't you and Patsy together all the time.
Cloe: Sure, until we got here and she took the first opportunity to ditch me.
KC: Just because she likes Ty, doesn't mean she's ditching you, Clo. Not that I understand what she sees in Ty.
Cloe (grins): He's cute, isn't he?
KC: He's weird, is what he is. Never says a word and when he does, he can't get them out straight. Maybe that's why he likes Paul so much. At least he can't hear the stammering.
Cloe: KC, that's not a nice thing to say.
KC: So? Neither of them is here to hear it.
Cloe (shrugs): Guess you're right.
KC: Maybe you should be my new best friend. Kayla always tells me off for being mean.
Cloe: It's called gossiping. Kayla's a hypocrite, because girls do it all the time. I bet whenever she's alone with Gel, they are gossiping as well.
(KC turns to the bartender and signals to him. The bartender puts down two more drinks in front of them.)
KC: I bet you and Patsy used to gossip about me.
Cloe: Used to? We still do.
KC: Tell me!
Cloe: Where's the fun in that?
KC: Come on, you can't just say something like that and then not tell me about it. Does she like me? I bet she has a crush on me.
(Cloe raises her eyebrows and points towards the dance floor, where Ty and Patsy are dancing very closely now.)
Cloe: Guess, you're the one with a crush.
KC: Me? As if. I don't need a new girlfriend.
Cloe: You had one?
KC: Don't sound so surprised. Didn't last very long though.
Cloe (grins): Scared her off?
KC: Her tribe left the city and she chose them over me.
Cloe: Oh. I'm sorry.
(KC waves her off, it's clear he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. Camera cuts to black.)
SCENE 21
(Camera opens up to Sammy and Brady sitting in front of Mouse's tree in the park. Brady is almost asleep, leaning against Sammy.)
Sammy (whispers): I'm so sorry. I should've helped you, stopped them. But I can't do anything.
(Camera pans around and moves towards the bushes lining the fence. There's a dark silhouette watching them and as the camera zooms in, we can see it's the Guardian.)
Ellie (OS): Brady? It's time for bed.
Sammy: She's coming.
(Camera pans around to show Sammy carrying Brady towards the hospital and disappearing off screen.)
Guardian: The daughter of Zoot. Don't worry, Brady, you'll soon be reconciled with the Supreme Mother.
(Camera fades out)
SCENE 22
(Camera fades in on Ryan and Trudy dancing together at the party. The music shifts to a slow song and Ryan stops moving.)
Trudy: Are you abandoning me?
Ryan: Uh… I'm… the song.
Trudy: We're friends, Ryan. You are allowed to touch me. I'm not poisonous or anything.
(When he doesn't move, Trudy laughs and takes his hands to place them on her hips.)
Trudy: There. Now just sway.
Ryan: I've slow danced before, Trude.
Trudy: Of course you have. The first dance is a pretty big deal at a wedding.
Ryan (confused): What are you-… Oh. Salene.
Trudy: What? You already forgot you've been married?
Ryan: I don't really forget about it, but it's become very surreal. Salene and I have been apart more than we've been together and now she's just gone.
Trudy: Yes, it doesn't really feel the same without her here. Do you sometimes miss the old days? When it was just us and the mall. Dal, Zandra and Salene still there. Because I do.
Ryan: Of course I do. In some way those were easier times even though we had the Locos to worry about. God, I miss Zandra. She would have loved this.
Trudy (giggles): I miss her advice. There has never been anyone who's known so much about style and beauty. Gel comes close, but it's not the same.
Ryan: Yes, she was really good with that stuff. And Dal. I still remember him and Jack fighting like an old married couple over their inventions.
Trudy: Dal was such a sweetheart.
Ryan: But it's not all bad now. I really like most of the new people.
Trudy: You were close to Jay, weren't you?
Ryan (nods): I do hope to see him again one day.
Trudy: Me too. Well, let's just hope nobody else has to leave us.
(The music changes to a faster song and Trudy twirls out of Ryan's grasp. They laugh and dance together.)
SCENE 23
(Camera pans from Trudy and Ryan over the dancing crowd until it lands on Cal and Kayla.)
Kayla (cont.): Then I'm going to be less at the hospital. I should probably get Sammy to check on my vegetable garden.
Cal: Why? You're not staying on the farm, are you?
Kayla: No, but I don't know if I'll have enough time to take care of it on my own. Too bad Dylan isn't here anymore. He always helped me.
Cal: Dylan?
Kayla: Just a kid. He and his brother stayed with us for a bit.
(She dances a little closer to him now and lets her fingers brush over his arms. Cal pretends not to notice.)
Kayla: What's up with Cara anyway? Her not liking me, I understand, but what about Patsy?
Cal (shrugs): To be honest, I think she's just jealous. She's like our sister. Now that Patsy is here, she might think Paul doesn't want her around anymore.
Kayla: You are really close, huh?
Cal: Kind of the same way you and KC are close, right?
(Kayla smiles and steps closer again. Their noses are almost touching now.)
Kayla: Right.
(She tilts her head and kisses him. At first Cal responds, but then he pushes her away. His face displays confusion and anger.)
Cal: What are you doing?
Kayla: I was just-…
Cal: You know how I feel about you. I'm not some toy you can play with and then throw away, when you get bored. Just leave me alone.
(He turns around and disappears in the crowd.)
Kayla (shouts): Cal! Dammit!
(She sighs and follows him.)
SCENE 24
(As Kayla and Cal leave the gym, the camera stays on the door and shows the Astros entering. Cloud stops for a second and takes it all in. He scans the room and quickly locates his fellow Forum members. Tilly and Camille come up behind him.)
Tilly: Looks like we're a little late.
Camille: Fashionably late, I'd say. The star of the party never arrives on time.
Cloud: Go have your fun, but remember what we talked about.
(Camille grins and then pulls Tai-San from the group of Astros towards the dance floor.)
Camille: Come on! I've been literally dying to do this with you.
(Jasper follows them with a fond smile on his face. Cloud looks for the Mall Rats and a smug grin appears on his face, when he locks eyes with Lex.)
SCENE 25
(Bray, Amber and Noel are still chatting happily with each other and have not noticed the Astros and Tai-San. It's only when a frantic Lottie almost runs into Amber that they realise something is up.)
Lottie: It's Lex!
Bray: What's he done now?
Lottie (gestures wildly towards the door): The Astros! I don't know why, but he got really mad. I think he's going to fight them.
(Trudy comes running towards them as well now.)
Trudy: Bray! Amber! Come quick!
(They follow her to the dance floor, where a small crowd has gathered around Lex, who's trying to get closer to Tai-San, but is being held off by Felix and Jasper. Ryan is trying to calm him down. Eventually more of the Mall Rats pop up and look from Lex to Tai-San with surprise.)
Bray: What's going on?
Amber: Tai-San?
(Tai-San looks at her for a second, but then focuses her attention on Lex.)
Lex: You said, you had never seen her before! Never heard of her! You're a fucking liar, Cloud! Damn it, just let me through!
Felix: We can't do that.
Ryan: Let him through, that's his wife.
Jasper (snorts): Oh we know. We've heard all about that.
(Lex ignores the comment and looks past them towards Tai-San.)
Lex: Tai-San. I've been looking everywhere for you.
(The expression on Tai-San's face shifts from curiosity to disgust as the camera fades to black.)
