A/N: Okay so here is Chapter 11, I know it's kind of short but I had made it so long originally that I had to split it into two chapters but well you now get two chapters at the same time XD I hope that makes up a little for the wait, I really am truly sorry about that but the stress from my trip and just plain old family problems seemed to have given me some really crummy writers block and I barely wrote for a month, barely even came up with any ideas and for me that was big. But I'm better now, I talked it all out with my friend and now all the weight is off my shoulders...I hit a rough spot in my depression so that also didn't seem to help and I figured out a few not so good things about myself when it comes to my anxiety so I had a lot of things on my mind and I just couldn't seem to get them out, not even in my writing but I'm back now and my depression is better, I'm better and able to write again :D but also many apologies if this isn't my best work, like I was working in some not so good conditions so sorry :).
Anyway enjoy and I'll see you soon for Chapter 12 and in a bit for chapter 13 that I'm planning on getting to work on after I'm done editing chapter 12 :D
Sincerely,
Angela
PS: Chapter 12 is a lot longer XD
Chapter 11
After many "thank you"s from Jane about getting to drive Betty and a quick goodbye to Maura's parents outside the precinct they entered the building and headed straight for the morgue.
The time 12:56 blinking on the clock as they entered the autopsy room, Korsak and Dr. Green were standing over the already prepped body of their John Doe.
"Just in time, Rizzoli," Korsak smiled, "Why don't you get a smock on and join us over here."
Jane nodded before she sent Maura a smile as the doctor was shrinking off her coat.
"Why don't you get changed, Dr. Isles and help me when you're done." Dr. Green suggested as he focused on cutting the Y incision.
"Yes, doctor." Maura nodded and walked briskly toward the bathroom.
Jane stepped next to Korsak and smiled, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
"How was lunch, Rizzoli?" He asked as they watched the M.E.
"It was good; we went to Sophie's Diner….got to drive a 1960's Rolls" Jane answered casually and Korsak watched her closely, trying to see if she was just messing with him but when she didn't give him her usual smirk he shook his head and decided to not let her get a rise out of him about driving a collector's item.
"Ah Sophie's; cute place, I've been there a couple of times, great food, interesting staff." Jane nodded in agreement before the older man turned to look at the M.E, "You ever been, Will?"
"Yes, once, many years ago." The doctor answered as he pulled away the skin. "Sophie is a wonderful woman and her kids were just darling back than."
Jane nodded and smiled at the man, "Yeah, you should meet em now." Jane laughed.
"That's not funny, Jane, Franny is a lovely girl and an old friend of yours." Maura said as she slipped into the smock.
"I was kidding, Maur." Jane laughed and Maura frowned slightly.
Maura cleared her throat and Jane watched the look on Maura's face change into the Maura she saw at the precinct in DC. She came face to face with none other than Doctor Isles and it was spooky, she had an almost cold professional look in her eyes, not the same as the ones Jane has spent two weeks looking into.
"What would you like me to do, Doctor?" Maura asked as she approached the table.
"Could you pass me the rib cutters, please?" Maura nodded and passed the doctor the tool before she pulled out a clipboard and started writing things down.
After about three and a half hours the autopsy was finally complete, tests were sent in, the molds from the knife wounds Maura took earlier were now dry and were being run through the system and they officially had a cause of death, their victim died from a stab wound that nicked the lung causing it to fill with blood.
"13 stab wounds…" Jane sighed as her and Korsak made their way upstairs, "now, that I can definitely say was personal."
Korsak nodded his head, "Yeah, looks like somebody had it out for him…"
Jane sighed and rubbed at the back of her neck as she thought, "Did you get an ID on him yet?" Jane asked as they stepped into the elevator.
"No, the prints were still running through the system and last time I checked there were still no hits in missing persons so I'm hoping we'll have a match on something soon."
Jane nodded and they stepped off the elevator, Jane heading straight to her desk and Korsak checking if they go a hit in the system.
Jane looked up when she heard Korsak clap his hands, "We got something?"
"Yes. Our John Doe is one George Masterson, 35-year-old dock worker, Married, no kids, lives on Myrtle Street." Korsak answered as he read over the information.
"That's not far from the crime scene. What's his wife's name?" Jane replied as she got up from her desk and went to stand next to Korsak at his computer.
"Uhh….Leslie Masterson, 30 years old and she's….a school teacher."
Jane nodded as she focused on the picture on the screen, "We should go and pick her up, see what she was doing last night."
Korsak glanced up at her as she wrote down the name of the school in her notebook.
"Agreed." Korsak smiled and pushed out of his chair, "Let's go. Just remember, Jane, these kinds of things are never easy."
Jane nodded as she followed him out of the bullpen, "This isn't my first rodeo, Korsak." Jane laughed and the older man nodded.
Maura sat at a table in the lab going over their victims autopsy reports and watching as the knife diameters ran through the system.
"Hmmm" Maura hummed as she tapped her pencil on the surface in front of her, her brain running through the scenarios of how the victim could have sustained the bruising on his hands. "It looks like he got in a fight approximately a week ago…" She thought aloud before she placed her pencil on the table and ran a hand through her hair. "What were you up to?" Maura asked quietly as she looked at a photo of the victim.
"I'm sorry?" a voice asked and Maura jumped, her head shooting up to look at the confused face of a young lab tech. "Oh! I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you." The tech said as she stepped forward, pushing her glasses back up her nose.
"Oh, no, it's okay." Maura reassured the small Asian woman who looked like she was about to hit herself for scaring her.
Maura stood up and walked toward the young woman who was standing by the door and introduced herself, "I'm Doctor Maura Isles." She stuck out her hand and the woman snapped out of her thoughts and quickly took it, shaking it quickly as she spoke.
"Senior Criminalist Suzie Chang, it's very nice to meet you Doctor, I've heard so many great things from everyone on the night shift."
Maura smiled at the young lady, "It's nice to meet you as well, Ms. Chang."
Suzie nodded and smiled brightly at the doctor, the techs from night had been going on about Doctor Green's replacement, about her age, her accomplishments and well Suzie had overheard a few of the CSRU guys talking about how she was "quite a looker". Her celebration/goodbye party for being promoted and transferred to the day shift was last night and everybody wanted to know if the rumours were true, was Doctor Isles really everything people were saying she was and she had gotten the job to tell them if she was as amazing as she seemed.
Maura smiled at her, "I haven't seen you around before, are you new?" Maura asked.
"I just got transferred from nights, Doctor Green said he thought it be best to switch things up." Suzie smiled as she watched the Doctor
"Well, then welcome to the day shift, Senior Criminalist Chang." Maura smiled before she started biting her bottom lip, trying to figure out what their victim was doing and where he might have been before the alley. Tests were already ordered for the fibers she found on the clothes, the dirt from the soles of his shoes and every other type of trace that might have come from the primary crime scene.
"Do you need help with anything, Doctor Isles?" Suzie asked and Maura frowned, 'do I?" She wondered as she looked back at the reports.
Maura nodded before answering the young tech, "I could use your help figuring out how Mr. Masterson got these bruises, I was thinking maybe by examining them we might figure out what he was hitting, whether it was a person or an object."
Suzie smiled broadly at the doctor before she nodded her head happily, "Of course, I'd be happy to help!" she chirped and Maura couldn't hold back the smile.
"Right this way." Maura said as she led the way toward autopsy.
"Right this way, Mrs. Masterson." Jane said as she held open the door to interrogation room 1.
The petit brunette nodded and entered the room before sat awkwardly at the table, clutching her purse straps in her hands.
The two detectives took a seat across from the woman and Jane smiled reassuringly at the small woman.
"Can I see George?" The woman asked her voice shaking as she said his name.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Masterson but our M.E is still running some tests." Jane said.
She talked to Maura on the phone when they came up here and the small doctor said she wasn't finished examining the body, something about a theory that she needed to test.
The widow nodded her head sadly, her body still shaking.
"Can I get you something to drink?" Jane asked as she reached out a hand to the distraught woman.
Leslie jumped slightly at the touch, just barely but Jane still noticed and when she turned her head to Korsak she got the impression that he did as well.
"I'll go get you a glass of water." Korsak spoke quietly and left the room.
Jane waited a few moments before she asked, "I'm sorry to have to ask you this, but where were you between 10 and 2 last night?"
The small woman looked up at her in shock before she nodded her head slowly, "I was with a friend, we were watching a movie at my place then I went to bed around 12." She answered numbly and Jane nodded.
"What's your friend's name?" Jane asked slowly, her voice neutral.
"Ted…Ted Hill, we work together." Leslie answered her voice shaking slightly as she spoke.
The door to the room opened and Korsak walked in holding a plastic cup of water, Mrs. Masterson turned to look at him as he entered.
"Here you go, Miss." Korsak smiled politely down at her before he took his seat next to Jane.
"Do you know of anyone who would want to hurt your husband?" Jane asked and the woman's eyes shot up to meet hers before she started shaking her head.
"N-No, everybody loved George."
Jane nodded and wrote something down in her notes, Korsak taking that time to ask his own question.
"According to our M.E your husband had gotten in a fight about a week ago, do you know anything about that?"
"No, he never mentioned anything." The wife answered before she bit her bottom lip, her hands continuing to fiddle with her bag.
"And you never wondered where he got the bruises from?" Jane asked and the wife shook her head again.
"I thought they were from work, he always bangs himself up a bit when he's at the yard."
Jane nodded, "Do you know where your husband was coming from last night?"
"Work, he always works late." She replied as she looked down at the table and took a healthy sip of water. "Can I go now? I have to call his mother and the rest of the family." The young woman asked, the nervous attitude leaving her for a few moments.
"Of course, we will contact you if we have any more questions." Jane informed and stood up, followed immediately by Korsak and Mrs. Masterson.
"I'll walk you out." Jane said and Mrs. Masterson nodded before she walked out of the door, Jane and Korsak following closely behind.
She stopped just outside the door and called to the widow, "I'll be one second." before she turned to Korsak.
"What do you think?" She asked in a hushed tone and the older gentlemen let out a hum.
"I think we should take a closer look at her, something about her just seemed off."
"I agree, it was something in her eyes that just gave me the creeps." Jane added and Korsak nodded in agreement, "Well I better not keep her waiting." She said before she started walking back toward the widow.
Halfway down the hall she noticed Maura step out of the elevator and freeze halfway, she knew that look, it was Maura's "flashback" look so instead of walking the wife to the lobby she walked her to the elevator and told one of the uniforms to make sure she got out of the building okay before she went to check on Maura.
Maura stepped off the elevator on the 2nd floor and her eyes immediately fell on Jane but a pair of cold blue eyes caught her sight and the look made her heart rate pick up and she stopped halfway down the hall, her eyes following the woman as she made her way to the elevator.
She briefly heard Jane say, "Please call if you think of anything." Before the elevator doors shut and the woman was out of sight.
She bit her bottom lip as she replayed the look in the woman's eyes over in her head, analyzing everything she could.
"Maura, are you okay?" A voice asked and Maura focused on the present, Jane's face slowly coming into focus.
"Yes, I'm fine. Sorry." Maura spoke and Jane reached out to run a hand over Maura's arm.
"Are you sure?" Jane asked worriedly and Maura looked up to meet Jane's eyes and smiled.
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Okay….It just looked as if you saw a ghost." Jane pointed out and Maura nodded numbly.
"I suppose I did…" Jane raised an eyebrow and Maura shook her head slightly, "Was that the victim's wife?"
Jane nodded, "Yeah, she seemed a little off to us so we are probably going to look into her a little further." Jane answered as she looked over Maura more, the way she was acting was worrying her a bit, "Something bugging you?" Jane asked.
Maura nodded her head before she answered distractedly, "Her eyes."
"Yeah, I noticed that too…but her husband just got killed, that could always be why."
"No, I know those eyes, Jane; I used to look into ones just like that every day in the mirror." Maura answered, as she ran her hand over her pants.
"Whoa, wait, you saying you think our vic was abusing her?" Jane growled, anger rising in her.
"Possibly…I can't say for sure…but it might be something to look into considering the nature of the attack." Maura supplied before she bit her bottom lip as she thought.
Jane nodded and watched as Maura pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, one of her signs that she was holding something back, "What is it, Maur?" Jane asked curiously.
Maura looked up shyly before she spoke, "Well, I was just thinking that maybe I could talk to her…I've been there Jane, I think I might be able to get her to open up."
Jane started shaking her head in protest before the doctor even finished talking, "No, Maura, no I couldn't ask you to do something like that…"
"You're not asking, I'm volunteering." Maura stated as she rested her right hand on her hip.
"Maura…." Jane sighed, her eyes practically begging Maura to think this through.
"I want to do this Jane, please?" Jane met Maura's pleading eyes and all her reasoning fell away.
Jane let out a defeated sigh and dropped her head as she ran a hand through her hair, "Okay, fine, you win but if at any point you feel uncomfortable you let me know, okay?" Maura nodded, a big smile spreading across her face, "Good, but before we bring the wife back in we gotta do some investigating, we can't run this whole investigation on a hunch, no matter how good a hunch it is." Jane smiled and Maura nodded her head in agreement.
"Jane, do you think I could talk to her alone…or maybe with just you there?" Maura asked as she bit her lip nervously.
"No, sweetie, I'm kinda on probation here. Korsak has to observe everything I do to make sure I'm doing everything right and to report back to the boss." Maura nodded her head, "He would have to at least be in observation." Jane added after a few moments and Maura smiled slightly before she bit her lip as she thought things through.
"Okay, but only Korsak; I don't want the whole precinct knowing what happened."
Jane nodded and placed a hand on Maura's shoulder as she looked the doctor in the eyes, "You don't have to do this, Maur, and you know I won't be angry if you change your mind."
"No Jane, I want to do this, I want to help…I need something good to come out of what happened to me and helping with this case might just be one." Maura stood straighter, a determined look on her face.
"Okay…but you know the deal; you have to tell me whenever you feel uncomfortable." Maura nodded and Jane smiled before she gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, "I really appreciate this, Maur…" Jane stated and they fell into a comfortable silence while an idea started to form in Jane's head.
"I got an idea," Jane said and Maura's eyes looked up to meet Jane's, her head tilting to the side slightly, "Maybe you can come with me to talk to friends and family, you said you understand her so you might be able to get them to see something they might not have thought was relevant. Would you like to do that?"
Maura nodded at Jane a small smile spreading across her face, "I'd love to."
Jane nodded happily at her before she gave her shoulder one last squeeze and let her hand fall down Maura's arm where she took Maura's hand to lead her into the bullpen, "Okay, great we just have to fill in Korsak and get the A-Okay before we do anything."
Maura nodded her head as she worked on keeping up with the detective's steps.
Maura's hand lay heavily in Jane's grasp as they came to a stop by Korsak's desk; the older gentleman was seated in his chair looking over the crime scene report from CSRU. Jane gave the small hand in hers a squeeze before she let it go and cleared her throat to get the older detective's attention.
Maura let her arm fall limply at her side and let her fingers tap a lazy rhyme against her thigh, the fingers of her casted hand finding the same beat.
Korsak looked over at the two looming over his desk, at the nervous looks on their faces he placed the file on his desk and turned his chair so he was facing the two, "Is there something you would like to share with me, ladies?" He asked with the slight raise of a bushy eyebrow.
Maura bit her lip nervously as she glanced between the two detectives, her hands moving to be held in front of her body, her thumb lazily running along the fiberglass cast.
Jane nodded, "Yes, sir." Jane paused as she took a quick glance over at Maura, "I ran into Maura in the hall and we have something we need to tell you." Jane said steadily and Korsak nodded at her.
"Yes, I had gotten that." He answered before he let out a sigh and sat forward in his chair, "what is it?" Korsak asked, looking fully at the fidgeting medical examiner.
Maura's eyes shot to his and her brows crinkled slightly as she thought over how she was going to answer, "Well…you see when I was examining the photos of the victim I came across bruises on his hands–"
"Yes, you mentioned that earlier." Korsak interrupted and Maura took in a calming breath as Jane sent him a deadly glare.
"Yes I did, Detective." Maura sighed and Korsak nodded before he lifted his hand in a sign for her to continue. "Thank you. Now as I was saying I noticed the bruising and felt the need to investigate further, I had come to the conclusion that he had hit something so Senior Criminalist Chang and I examined the wound further and looked for any evidence that could point us to what may have hit." Maura paused and waited for a sign that the detective had taken everything in and when she got a nod from the man she continued, "Anyway we concluded that he had hit a person repeatedly about 3-4 days ago."
"Is that it?" Korsak asked and Maura shook her head.
"No, on my way up here to tell you both I saw Jane and Mrs. Masterson walking to the elevator and I noticed something about her…" Maura paused as the eyes of the woman passed through her mind, her own following behind.
"What did you notice? You saying he hit her?" Korsak asked, standing up in his chair and the move causing Maura to take two quick steps back, "Sorry." Korsak apologized when he got another glare from Jane.
"We think so." Jane answered as she placed a comforting hand on Maura's back and the older detective's hardened features softened as he took in the small woman in front of him.
"What brought you to this idea?" Korsak asked his voice softer as he spoke this time.
"Her eyes." Maura said definitively and Korsak looked at her as if she had said the earth was really square or that aliens landed on earth and had spoken to her personally.
"Her eyes? Her eyes told you her husband was knockin her around?" Korsak asked, his voice dripping in skepticism and humor.
Maura looked up at the older man in shock, a steady scowl on her face as she took a step toward the man, "Yes, her eyes told me her husband might have been hurting her, detective. Do you want to know why I could see it in her eyes?" Maura growled and Korsak's jaw dropped.
Jane reached out and placed a hand on Maura's back, "Maura." She husked, hoping that she could calm the woman down before she caused a scene.
Maura deflated slightly but rage was still in her eyes as they glared at the man, "and for further reference, Detective, using phrases like, "smacked around" is quite offensive and if someone like Mrs. Masterson were to hear that she would be greatly offended and just as hurt, if not more." Maura growled and the older man nodded, seeing that he had hit a rather sensitive nerve.
"I'm sorry, doctor." Korsak said awkwardly before he glanced over at Jane whose focus was solely on the small doctor. "But I would like to know how her eyes could tell you he was hurting her? I'm going to need more to go on before I can bring her in on this."
"That's what we came to talk to you about…you see Maura knows about this stuff, sir, she knows what makes these people tick and I'm sure she can get the wife to open up." Jane answered as she continued to lazily run her hand up and down Maura's back.
"I see, and how is this? Has she worked with these types of people before? Studied them in school?" Korsak asked skeptically again.
"No, she's–"
"No? Then what is her expertise?" the man interrupted and Jane let out a huff before Maura spoke up again.
"I've lived it." She answered flatly and the man deflated before he glanced around the bullpen to see if anyone heard.
"And by lived it you mean?" Korsak questioned quietly as he glanced around them.
"Really?" Jane asked slightly irritated and Maura shook her head at her.
"My boyfriend was abus–"
"Come with me." Korsak interrupted before he started walking toward the interrogation rooms.
"What?" Jane asked and shared a quick glance at Maura before they followed the man into the observation room.
Jane was about to start talking again when Korsak lifted up a finger to silence her before he shut the door and turned around to face them. "Okay, what are you two proposing I do here?" he asked with the slight rise of his eyebrow again.
"I can help." Maura stated and Korsak let out a huff.
"And how are you going to help?"
"We were thinking she could help me talk to the friends and family, try to get them to realize things they might not know they even notice, she can ask questions we might not even think are relevant….we also were thinking she could talk to the wife, I have a feeling she could really help us out on this one, Vince." Jane said and Korsak leaned against a filing cabinet.
"I don't know, Rizzoli…" he said, rubbing a hand at the back of his neck, "She's a medical examiner, how are we supposed to explain what she's doing up here and she's never interrogated a suspect, she doesn't know what to do here."
"Well actually, I have a degree in psychology and can read facial cues so I can tell when someone is lying, among other things." Maura pointed out and the man nodded.
"And we can tell people she's a consultant." Jane added with a smiled and Korsak nodded.
"That could work but what are we going to tell Burns or anyone else around here that asks? Because I'm sure Dr. Isles doesn't want everyone to know what she's going through."
"We can tell them I worked closely with the subject back in DC and that you brought me in to help seeing as how I know the inner workings of these types of things." Maura supplied with a shrug, "It's not a lie and it's quite normal for detectives to bring people in for their certain expertise."
"Okay, okay, I think I can make that work…so doc if you are up to it would you like to be a consultant for the BPD for this case?" Korsak asked with a small smile and Maura nodded.
"It would be my pleasure, detective."
"Okay, oh and just so you know you will have to work closely with Detective Rizzoli for this case, think of her as your partner." Vince smiled and Maura's head tilted as she thought over the words.
"What about you, Detective, won't I also be working closely with you since you are Jane's superior?"
Korsak smiled, "Yes, but you will be doing most of your work with Jane since you two have such a close bond and from what I can tell she can pick up when something is going on with you and help, I can tell you trust her, doctor." Vince said with a smiled and Maura nodded back before her brain took the words he said and ran with them, tucking them in a dark corner for later, to come back to when she's alone.
"Okay, so Korsak what should we do now?" Jane asked.
"Well, I'll have to go talk to the lieutenant and you are going to search up the victim's records and look into Ted Hill." Korsak said as he turned toward the door, "Doctor Isles if you don't mind I'd like you to stay up here incase my boss would like to ask you some questions."
"Of course, Detective." Maura answered and soon the two women followed Korsak out of the tiny room and split up as they headed to Jane's desk while Korsak went to go talk to Lt. Burns.
Jane plunked down in her chair and Maura pulled the chair from the empty desk next to Jane's before she too sat down, both women let out a small sigh before Jane scooted closer to Maura's side of the desk and whispered,
"That was surprisingly easy…"
Maura looked into the detective's eyes and smiled at her as she ran her hand over her cast, tracing patterns on the item. "Yes, yes it did." Maura mumbled distractedly as her eyes fell to watch her hand dance over her cast.
"You're distracted." Jane stated as she rolled her chair to sit in front of Maura. "What's going on in that big brain of yours?"
"Hmm?" Maura looked up and blushed slightly when she saw Jane's 'I knew it' smirk on her face, "Sorry, I was just thinking about the case…"
"What about it?" Jane asked as she reached out to place a hand on Maura's knee, hoping to bring her comfort incase she needed it.
Maura looked down at Jane's hand before she looked up and smiled at the detective, silently thanking her for being there, "Well, if our victim was abusing his wife there would be evidence to that in her hospital records, I mean she's a history teacher she wouldn't know how to dress a wound properly let alone set bones…" Maura stated as her hand fluttered in movement as she thought about many early morning anonymous clinic appointments and the sounds of bones popping into place. "Trust me it's not something you would want to try on your own."
Jane watched the pain flash on Maura's features and she reached out to stop the movement of Maura's hand, "You sure you want to do this?" Jane asked and Maura's eyes shot up to hers.
"We should check every hospital and clinic in her area, enter a description of the wife because there's a chance she used a fake name a few times." Maura said, not bothering to answer Jane's question.
"Okay, I'll talk to Korsak about that once he gets back." Jane answered and she gave Maura's hand a gentle squeeze before she rolled her chair back in front of her desk to start looking for family and friends to question.
Maura nodded slowly, looking down at her hand as she added, "We should also look into her phone records and look for domestic violence helplines incase she called them at anytime."
Jane looked back over at Maura and smiled gratefully at the doctor, "Okay."
Maura nodded and sat back in her chair before she pulled out her phone to see if she missed anything, there was a text from senior criminal Chang on the screen and she quickly opened the message, it was a simple message that read "call me ASAP." her brows furrowed as she read it over, that was it, nothing else but that and after a few moments the message seemed to have spiked Maura's anxiety and she mumbled a quick "I'll be right back" to Jane before she left the busy bullpen to give the young criminalist a call.
Jane looked up at Maura as she scurried away, her phone already to her ear, Jane was about to call out and go after her when her desk phone rang and forced her into work.
"Ms. Chang, you wanted me to call, is everything alright?" Maura rushed into the phone once she heard it pick up.
She heard a slight gasp through the phone before the young woman's voice came through, "Yes, everything is okay down here, I just got the results back on the knife wound and wanted to tell you them." Suzie said, taken aback by the nervousness in her boss' voice, "Are you okay?" Suzie asked after a small pause.
"Yes, I'm fine. Why don't you send the report to detective Rizzoli and I'll look at it here that way I can see what's going on and explain any questions they might have."
"Okay, Doctor Isles, would you like me to just send the reports to you or Detective Rizzoli for the rest of this case?" Suzie asked as she scrolled down the list of the detectives' work emails until she found Detective Rizzoli's.
"Yes, Suzie, that would be greatly appreciated." Maura answered as she turned to face the bullpen and caught one of Jane's nervous glances as she talked on the phone but her body was fully facing Maura and it looked as if the detective was ready to spring out of her desk in a moment's notice.
"Okay…" Suzie replied as she clicked send on the report, "It just sent, doctor Isles. I'll email you if we get anything else back today."
"Okay, thank you Ms. Chang." Maura replied before she hung up the phone and smiled reassuringly at Jane to calm the detective's protective instincts.
Maura walked back over to Jane's desk and smiled down at the woman as she sat back down and waited for Jane's phone call to end.
"Yes, yes of course, no thank you for calling Mr. Mitchel…we will definitely remember to ask about that when we talk to her next…yes, you have a good day too sir…goodbye….yes, yes goodbye sir." Jane hung up the phone and let out a long sigh as she rested her forehead on her desk.
"Who was that?" Maura asked and she leaned forward to make sure she could hear what the detective was saying.
"The principal at the school our vic's wife works at." Jane replied and Maura's brows crinkled as she thought about why he would be calling, "And before you ask we called his office earlier to talk about the wife."
"I see…what did he have to say?" Maura asked and smiled when Jane sat up to look at her.
"The usual, I didn't really know her personally, she's a nice woman, she's always keeps to herself except when it comes to Ted Hill….oh but this one's new, he said she's suspected in the disappearance of pencils, tape and…wait for it, staples." Jane laughed and Maura's eyebrows crinkled again and her head tilted to the side, "I know, weird, huh."
"Yes…" Maura replied distractedly, this time caught in thought for why their suspect might need those items.
"So who were you on the phone with?" Jane asked and the question did the trick and brought Maura completely back to earth.
"Ms. Chang, she called to tell me the results were in on the knife diameters."
"Oh? What are they?" Jane asked and Maura smiled.
"I don't know, I told her to email the report to you." Maura smirked and Jane shook her head before she turned to face her computer to log into her account.
Maura got out of her chair and walked to stand next to Jane to read the report.
Jane clicked on the email and waited as the report loaded on the screen, both women reading over it, Maura a little faster than Jane since she didn't get stuck on the more technical terms, "I think I might end up googling some of those words later so I feel like less of a dolt…or maybe we could just have a crime show marathon tonight instead of a movie."
Maura shook her head at the detective before she spoke up, "It's pretty simple, Jane…but to make it easy on you it seems like the knife is a chef's knife, something you would commonly find in a kitchen." Maura stated with a shrug, "Just what I had suspected but I really don't like to guess, anyway this test tells us the model." Maura smirked as she leaned over the detective and used the mouse to scroll down a bit and click on a small link at the bottom, the image of the murder weapon they were looking for popped up on the screen, "Oh! I used to have that exact same knife." Maura chuckled but winced when she remembered that knife being used on her, "It's quite sharp."
Jane glanced up at Maura and frowned, imagining what might be going on in Maura's head and she had to almost physically stop herself from reaching out to touch the scar at her friends side again. "I…" Jane started but stopped once a set of hard hazel eyes found hers.
"Jane." Maura warned and the detective turned to look back at the computer.
Jane cleared her throat and said, "So this is what we are looking for?"
"Yes." Maura nodded and after a few moments she spoke up again, "And as for the movie night, it is to celebrate your promotion so if you want to have a crime show marathon I wouldn't mind." Maura smiled and Jane looked up at the doctor and smiled back.
"Okay, I'll keep that in mind for later." The two stood there in silence just smiling at each other as they thought when Korsak's voice came booming from down the hall.
"We got the go ahead, ladies." Jane and Maura turned to look at him and the man was smirking at them and Jane's cheeks turned a slight shade of pink while Maura smiled at the man. "What did you find out?"
"Umm I'm still waiting for the husbands records to come in but I spoke to the principal at the school and he said Ted Hill is the 9th grade science teacher, a nice guy and that he and the wife spent lots of time together."
"Very good," Korsak answered as he sat down at his desk, "Anything else I might need to know?"
"Umm we got a match on the knife; it's a Victorinox eight inch chef's knife." Jane answered before she hit a few keys and brought up the information she searched earlier, "I also got a uniform to pick up Mr. Hill and bring him in for you to talk to while me and Maura talk to the victim's sister who I called earlier to tell her to come by." Jane informed and Korsak smiled as he nodded at her.
"Okay, great, the warrants for their home, work and phones should be in by later tonight or tomorrow morning."
"I also think we should get a warrant for the wife's cell phone and medical records." Jane added quickly and Korsak nodded his agreement.
"Okay, I'll also get to work on that." Vince said as he logged into his computer and picked up his desk phone to make a call to their ADA to see if he can get them a warrant for the medical records.
Maura glanced between the two for a few moments before she announced, "I'm going to go tell Dr. Green that I'll be consulting on this case." And after she got two quick nods from the detectives she got up and made her way to the elevator.
