Maura walked into the bullpen at 8:05 in the morning. She was slightly perturbed, there was a fender bender on her way to work and she had a full work load that she would have preferred not to start late.
"Hey Dr. Isles!" Korsak called from his desk, "Did you hear?"
Maura looked at him, clearly confused.
"Jane and Casey broke up Friday."
Maura's stomach swooped inside her, and she struggled to keep her expression placid. She approached his desk, not wanting to broadcast the conversation to everyone in the room.
"I haven't spoken to her this weekend." Maura said carefully.
Korsak leaned back in his chair, whistling. "Damn, she must be really torn up if she isn't telling you."
Maura shifted uncomfortably.
"I don't know" Frost chimed in from his desk, "When I called her she didn't seem too upset."
Korsak wrinkled his brow, "I wonder what happened".
"It always seemed like Casey was more into Jane" Frost added.
"Hey, what are you all gossiping about?" The trio turned, and relief flooded Maura as Frankie strode up to them.
"Your sister obviously" Frost quipped, "Have you heard about her and the general?"
"I'm not actually sure that his official tile is General" Maura said, her innate need for correctness on autopilot by now.
Frost rolled his eyes, playfully. "Well I heard he's leaving for a Kentucky base next week".
Korsak scoffed, "Figures he would run away. Never though he was good enough for Janie anyway. Tryin to make her be his little wife. I bet that's why they broke up".
Frost shook his head, "Nah, Morgan from Ballistics heard it was Jane who ended it, Casey was completely caught off guard."
"How would Morgan-"
"Hey!" Frankie interrupted, "Knock it off". He looked at Maura, his gaze intense. "Jane did the right thing." He turned to the men, "Now get back to work".
Frost and Korsak grumbled good naturedly and Maura headed toward the elevator. Frankie caught her elbow. She spun around and they were inches apart. Frankie looked at her, opening his mouth and closing it again. Maura's thoughts had been racing since Frankie's initial glance. Jane had told Frankie, she must have. Maura was struggling to decipher what that meant.
"I'm really proud of her" Frankie whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Take it easy on her, okay?"
Maura nodded, giving Frankie a soft smile. "Of course Frankie".
He let her arm go as the elevator dinged. She was lost in her thoughts as she walked into the morgue. She walked right past her desk, dropping her bag reflexively.
"Dr. Isles" Susie piped up from the corner, "Your desk", she motioned over.
Sitting on Maura's desk was a rose and a honey blueberry scone. Maura picked up the rose, running her fingers along the petals. By the scone she noticed a message, scrawled on a post-it: Ready when you are
