Ch 11: Helga's Past
"So what did you want me to help you on?" asked Helga handing Brainy a glass of wine.
"I don't know where to start."
"Well just tell me what's on your mind." Helga took a sip of her wine.
"I guess you can say that I'm in love with Connie. She is such a gorgeous woman and I would love to go on a date with her. My only problem is that I know she won't do it because I don't meet her standards." He looked down at his glass.
"Don't say that Brainy. I've known you for quite a while now and you're a really sweet and romantic guy. Connie is just a stuck up person who thinks she's better than everyone else. She's used to being rich and having a luxurious life. She just needs to warm up to you."
"I suppose. That's the reason why I'm here with you. I know Arnold's fiancee is her best friend and since you and Arnold are pretty close, I was wondering if maybe you can have him help me get a date with Connie."
Helga nearly choked on her wine as she heard what he said. "Are you kidding me Brainy? Arnold and I aren't very close and we don't even talk about romances. We just discuss work."
"Helga. I know what's going on between you and Arnold."
Helga's eye widened in fear. Her cheeks heated up and her heart was racing. "Wha-what do you mean Brainy? There's nothing going on between us both."
"Helga don't lie to me. I've known you since elementary school and I'm the other person ,besides Phoebe, who knows you very well. I'm surprised Phoebe doesn't know about what's going on between you two."
"I-I-I don't know what you're talking about," said Helga refusing to tell him the truth. Her palms were very sweaty and her forehead felt hot.
"Stop lying. I can tell you're nervous by the look on your face. Your hands are sweaty, your face is red, your eyes are wide in fear. Come on now. I thought we were better friends than this. You know you can trust me. So tell me, why are you doing what you're doing with Arnold? Aren't you afraid of Ruth finding out?" he asked. His back rested nicely on the couch while he took a sip of his wine.
Helga sighed and decided to give in. "Fine. You're right. There's no use in lying to you." She told Brainy the whole story while he sat back listening to her. "Please do not tell anyone about this Brainy, not even Phoebe. I refuse to let her know because I know she would be very disappointed in me and I know if someone were to be suspicious they'd ask her and she easily gives in during pressure." Brainy nodded in agreement.
"Well the way you feel with Arnold is exactly how I feel towards Connie. I know she's the one for me and I want her to know that but I just can't approach her. Please Helga. Help me get a date with her." He put his wine glass down on the table and grabbed Helga's hands. She looked at him not knowing what to say. The look of desperation in his eyes made her realize exactly how she felt with Arnold. Desperate for attention. Desperate for wanting to be noticed.
She sighed. "I'll do my best." Brainy's face lit up and sprang up to hug her. "Okay. Okay that's enough. You're. Squeezing. Me." Brainy let go of her with embarrassment and blushed. The rest of the night contained of catching up and before they knew it, they both fell asleep on the couches with their empty wine bottle.
The following morning Helga rushed to go to work. She woke Brainy up and both departed at separate times. Helga had to get to work extra early to prepare some things for Arnold. As Helga arrived to the office, she noticed that Arnold was already in there. She took a deep breath and walked in.
"Good morning Arnold."
Arnold looked up and smiled at her. "Good morning Helga," he replied. "How's your morning?"
"Uh good. Good. Not bad," she said looking away. Helga still felt a bit hurt from the previous day.
"That's good to know. Well anyway, I wanted to let you know that we need to get some paperwork done today because the showing of the new commercial event is approaching rather quickly and Eugene is still waiting on certain things. Please let me know what you finish the work."
Helga nodded and walked over to her office. "Oh and Helga?" She turned around. "Thank you."
"For what?" asked Helga.
"I don't know. For being you and making my work life a lot easier. I know I don't praise you enough as you deserve but from the bottom of my heart, I'm extremely glad our paths have crossed once again and you are by my side. You're so intelligent, kind, caring, and brilliant Helga. There's no other person I would have liked to work with besides you." Arnold walked over to her and held her in his arms. For a moment, she wanted to push him away but the warm sense of skin made her give in. She never wanted him to let go. She knew they were perfect for each other but he's already engaged with Ruth. The thought of Ruth made her flinch and walk away from Arnold who stood there in confusion. "What's wrong?"
"I-I-I just don't want anyone to catch us doing this especially you're fiancee."
"You're right. I'm so sorry Helga. This must feel like a huge pressure for you with everything we have done."
"N-no. Don't worry about it Arnold. It's not like we've had sex or anything," she laughed nervously. Arnold's face turned to a warm smile and nodded.
"Speaking of sex. Do you want to come over to my place and hang out tonight? I mean we're obviously not going to do it but I mean...gosh...sorry. That was probably a bad topic to bring this invitation up," said Arnold scratching the back of his head.
Helga giggled. "It's okay. It tends to happen but yes. I'd love to hang out with you more."
"Great. I'll meet you down at the garage by my car when we're done with work. We don't want Ruth to find out." He winked at her and she left to her office.
Once the work day was over, Helga picked up her things from her office and made her way downstairs to the garage.
"You're finally leaving, monster?"
Helga frowned and turned to see none other than Connie. "I'm surprised you're still here considering you always show up to work late. Are you trying to make up your hours because you need the money?"
"Ha ha very funny. I'm actually waiting for Ruth. And I don't need the money. This is just used for extra expenses like these fabulous clothes I always wear unlike your pieces of ..cloth."
"Right. Whatever princess," said Helga turning around to get into the elevator. I hate her so much. I don't understand what Brainy sees in her.
Down in the garage, Helga saw Arnold waiting for her. He smiled at her and opened the car door for her. He got in the car and they drove off to his place. Once arriving, Helga noticed the place was not the same building he used to live in with his grandparents.
"I thought you still lived with your grandparents," said Helga waiting for Arnold to open her door.
"Not anymore since Ruth and I got engaged. My grandparents thought it'd be a good idea for me to live on my own and have a place for her and I once we get married." He opened the door and held out his hand to help her out the car.
"Speaking of marriage...how did your parents react to the engagement?" asked Helga.
"I'll tell you the whole story when we get inside." He smiled again at her and both walked inside. Arnold took Helga's purse and set it by the door. He grabbed some wine glasses and poured some wine. "You don't mind some wine, do you?"
Helga smiled. "Not at all. It's exactly what I did yesterday with Brainy."
"Brainy? What were you doing with him?"
"I'll tell you everything once you tell me your story," smirked Helga. She grabbed the wine glass and took a sip.
Arnold drank some wine and cleared his throat. "Alright well I guess I should tell you everything. After graduating from high school, I ended up going to the same university that Ruth was going to. To my surprise we had several classes together and she immediately recognized me on the first of school."
Helga clenched her teeth while trying to act cool. She took another sip of her wine. "Pretty much throughout the semester Ruth and I got to know each other more. We've realized we had a connection but she never did accept my invitation to become my girlfriend. I got rejected so many times and right when I was about to give up, I decided to try one last time. I asked her while having lunch and she finally accepted. I was extremely happy Helga. You have no idea. The woman of my dreams accepted to date me. A simple guy. We dated for a couple of years. During those years, I worked alongside Ruth in this business. Everyone else we grew up with began applying there as well because they needed employees. I wanted to propose to Ruth since the beginning of our relationship but I needed to get know her more. Just a few months ago, before you arrived, I proposed to her with her father's permission. He was very ecstatic for me to become a part of the family but grandparents weren't so happy about it."
Helga's eye widened in surprise. "Why not?" she asked.
Arnold looked down at his glass and laughed a bit. Helga was confused. "My grandparents, especially my grandma, thought I was going to marry you. It's funny because I would always bring Ruth over to the boarding house and my grandma refused to talk to her. She's slowly opening up to her though. I'm sure if we ever do have kids my grandma will open up to her. Anyways, I proposed to Ruth and she accepted. Lately we've been having problems in our relationship but we're working on it. It's no big deal."
Helga felt a slight relief. She did not want to be the problem of their relationship but she still wanted to have Arnold. His grandmother even knows it!
"So. What's going on with Brainy? Something going on between you two?" he winked at Helga.
"No. Not at all. I've known Brainy since forever and there's no way I'd ever date him. He's more like a brother to me."
"I see. So what did he want?"
"He asked me to do him a favor."
"Which is?"
"T-to help him get a date with Connie." Helga blushed a bit as she spilled the beans.
"A date with Connie?" Arnold looked bewildered. "Does he have a thing for her?"
"Yeah he does. He was wondering if maybe you and I can help him get a date since we're working together and you're her boss." Helga wanted to let him know that Brainy knew the truth but refused to. She didn't want this to end even though it was hurting Arnold's relationship with Ruth.
"I suppose. I mean he has always been the shy type so I guess helping him wouldn't hurt." Arnold smiled at Helga. "It's really nice of you to help him. I know you two are pretty close friends and I find that adorable."
"Adorable? Really football head?" Helga leaned closer to Arnold. "How is that adorable?"
Arnold felt suddenly aroused by Helga's smirk. He into her eyes. "Helga. You're so beautiful."
Helga's smirk turned into a serious face. "Y-you think I'm...I'm beautiful?" she whispered. Her eyes began to water. No one has ever told her that besides Phoebe and Brainy but she knew they only meant it in a friendly way.
"Absolutely. Your lips are so pink and soft. The touch of your skin makes me melt. Your eyes are filled with pure innocence and kindness. I can sense your heart is filled with love." Arnold didn't understand why he was saying those things to Helga. Words were coming out of his mouth without his brain telling it to. It was like they were controlling themselves.
Helga's face blushed as Arnold said everything to her. His body couldn't control itself. Helga's blushing cheeks turned him on. She was so innocent and he wanted to kiss her lips. He wanted to hold her. Before his mind could think of anything, his arms flung around Helga and held her tightly. She looked up at him with an angelic expression. He looked at her and slowly leaned closer to her. Their lips met and both had fireworks exploding inside them. Helga leaned back against the couch while Arnold leaned closer to her.
'What am I doing with Helga? Why can't I stop?',thought Arnold. His hands gently touched her body and slowly made their way to her breasts. The touch of his fingers against Helga's breasts made her body tingle. She wanted more. Arnold then removed his shirt and she removed her blouse. Their warm bodies touched and Arnold lifted Helga off from the couch and carried her to his bedroom. Before they knew, they were making love.
"Wow Arnold, that was something else," said Helga covering her body with the sheets. Arnold turned to face her and kissed her.
"I'm glad you enjoyed yourself," said Arnold smiling at her. "Helga. I was wondering. That wasn't your first making love, was it?"
Helga's face turned rather serious. She looked down at the sheets as if disappointed. "No. It wasn't."
"May I ask why you're sad about it? I understand if you don't want to talk about it."
"It's fine. I've never told anyone so I suppose it'd be good to get it out of my chest right? Well while I was traveling, I dated a man for a few months. I fell in love with him because he mad me feel special. He was so kind and caring. Almost like you Arnold except he wanted to hurt me. I should have seen it coming but love tends to make you blind that everything is magical for you. Well one night we ended making love in his car. It was an amazing experience for me because it was my first time after all and I never thought I'd find someone to love me especially with the way I look. The next day I tried calling him but he wouldn't answer my phone calls. I went out to look for him and found him with his friends. They were drunk. He looked at me straight in the eyes and laughed. I walked up to him and asked him what the hell was going on and all he did was smirk. His friends were laughing along with him. He walked up to me and told me directly in the eyes that he didn't love me. Everything...th-that happened...w-w-was a bet." Helga began to cry and her tears rolled down her cheeks. Arnold's heart dropped as Helga mentioned what happened.
"His friends m-m-made a bet w-with him that if h-he could trick m-me into falling in l-love with him and sleeping with him, he'd win."
"What would he win?" asked Arnold.
"Money. He would win money from his friends. He called me ugly, hideous, monster, and every horrible word you can think of while his friends were still laughing. He then tried to force me to have sex with him in front of his friends. He tried to pull my skirt up but I managed to escape. Since that day, I decided to come back home. I told my parents and they welcomed me back but like always, they're never home. Just last week they left me a note saying they left on vacation for a couple of months. I'm fine with it since I hardly see them anyway." Helga continued looking down. Not once did she look at Arnold.
Arnold without a word went up to Helga and hugged her. She definitely needed someone to be there for her. Guilt rose up in his body. He was doing the same thing to Helga and now it has gone too far. He had to tell Gerald to call off the bet. There was no way he would live happily if he was hurting Helga.
