Chapter Ten
The dark and terrible mind of Hexus was a wicked and twisted universe ruled by chaos. Not a single law bound to idiot physics to be found. His sole purpose was to revel in utter and sheer destruction of life.
"I'm a little teapot, short and stout. Here is my handle, here is my spout. When I get all steamed up, I just shout. Tip me over and pour me out."
He threw back his head and cackled. "Oh," he sighed, trying his very best to stretch in such cramped living conditions. "I'm going to eat all your fucking faces."
Zak turned his music off and wondered around for a little while, making sure he kept the Leveler in sight. He didn't want to upset his uncles should they try and find him with their cameras and not be able to spot him. It would be embarrassing to hear them shouting his name over the loudspeakers.
The sun was high overhead and he could hear the sound of birds coming from somewhere in the distance. Up ahead of him, he could see how dense the forest was getting. They were starting to make their way into new territory.
A loud sawing noise made him turn his head. He spun around, and watched as the blades of the Leveler ate right through a towering tree. The tree shook something terrible, and then for a few seconds it just stood there, then it began to fall, and with it, so did Zak's heart. The tree made such a terrible sound as it fell. It chilled him down to his marrow. It hit the ground with a blast of thunder, and he turned away as the Leveler finished the job.
That sound stayed with him for many moments afterwards. The way the tree had struck the earth. It had been so deafening, so final.
Beams of sunlight streamed down on his head, making him wipe the sheen of sweat from his smooth brow. He ducked under a much smaller tree for some shade, and turned his music back on as he took a seat. A little break wouldn't hurt. It would soon be time for his uncles to give him new territory to mark.
I've been lonely
I've been waiting for you
I'm pretending
And that's all I can do
Pips poked his head around a glowing blue mushroom just in time to see Crysta lure Batty into some bushes with a few dark berries. The fairy cocked a brow and bit his bottom lip. What is she up to now? He shook his head and rolled his emerald eyes. Nothing safe.
He looked over his broad shoulder and saw the other faeries discussing what the bat had been going on about earlier and shrugged. They were all passing it off as the ravings of a lunatic who spent too much time with themselves. Laughter soon filled the little clearing and they'd just as quickly gone back to normalcy.
A little bit away from the rest, he spotted Aqua and Acorn. They were both glaring at him with a fury he saw all too often. He gave them his very best smile. The kind of smile that could light up the darkest of places. This only seemed to infuriate them all the more. It made him chuckle under his breath.
He quickly turned his attention back to Crysta and the crazy bat. The two of them looked to be discussing something very serious. Crysta was smiling with that look on her face and the bat was looking all the more paranoid and worried. That was when Pips instantly knew Crysta was planning on doing something she shouldn't.
Nobody moved as swiftly or as quietly as Pips. He was above the two looking down now.
"Tell me more about, humans," Crysta said, floating there before Batty. "Tell me everything you know."
"Humans are bad news," Batty said, nodding his head up and down very quickly. "That is all a pretty little bug like you needs know. The farther you stay away from them the better. All they do is make noise and then cry about it."
Pips cocked his head to the side. This guy actually believes what he's saying.
"Come on, Batty," Crysta coaxed, giving him another berry. "Tell me."
Batty gobbled up the berry rather noisily and sighed. "Okay."
Crysta giggled with glee.
"You really wanna know?" He asked.
Crysta nodded her head. "Yes," she said, grinning all the more. "Yes I do."
Pips leaned closer and closer.
"They destroy everything they touch," the bat said matter of fact. "Just look at me. You think these wires are Mother Nature's handy work? No. They did this to me."
Crysta was taken aback. "They lived in peace with the forest long ago."
Pips nodded his head to nobody. He had heard the ancient tales. Humans and faeries were partners in nature. They both kept the balance between worlds.
Batty shook his head. "They may have been thousands of years ago, little buggy, but not now. Now they murder each over the littlest offense. They hate each other because of so many pointless things. If they knew little bugs like you existed, they'd do worse to you than what has been done to me. Even now they seek to destroy this world. They have the power of false suns now. Suns that can burn away everything. The television said so."
"Television?" Crysta asked.
Pips made a face, trying his best to keep quiet. He wanted the bat to say more.
"The box they all gather around to take instruction from. It tells them what to think, how to feel, and what to do." Batty said, leaning back and scratching the scruff of hair on his neck. "It is their master. It is the main reason why they're all such idiots."
Pips rolled his eyes. Now that bat was just talking nonsense again. He must have been eating a little something more than just berries.
"I even spotted a few near Mount Warning," Batty said and then suddenly wrapped himself up in hi wings as if he'd suddenly said something he shouldn't had.
Pips saw just how wide and blue Crysta's eyes flashed. Uh oh. He knew that look. It was nothing good. He quickly ducked back behind a leaf.
"Take me!" Crysta said, jumping up to float before the bat upside down. "Think of it, Batty. I'll get to see real humans. Maybe I can even befriend one."
"Oh, no!" Batty said, shaking his head, keeping his wings wrapped tightly around him. "No way in hell am I taking a pretty little bug like you to that human infested pit of doom. We should stay here. It's nice here."
"Don't be so afraid, Batty," she said, leaping back in joy. "We can both fly. They have no way of seeing me anyway. They don't have the gift of faerie sight. We'll be fine."
Pips leaned back against the leaf. This was really bad. There was no way he could allow Crysta to go to Mount Warning. Not that he believed the bat and all this human nonsense, but it was dangerous outside Ferngully.
"Wait!" Batty cried.
Pips quickly poked his head back around the leaf and his jaw dropped. Crysta was off in a blue blur and Batty was quickly following. He floated there for a few seconds and quickly took off after the both of them. There was no way he was going to let Crysta go there all by herself with a stranger they'd just met.
This was something he had never done, and his heart was beating something fierce because it was new and exciting. The glow all around him was extra bright. He sped up so as to not lose them, but also not to let them see they were being followed.
I've come to your forest, a voice spoke from deep within his soul. I'm here. Bring me home.
Those eyes flashed before him. Eyes darker than the blackness between the silver stars at night. The green glow all around him got brighter and brighter as he soared after Crysta and Batty. He had no idea why, but he was smiling like a fool.
