Chapter 11
"You okay?"
Emily glanced over at her friend from the other side of the small café table. "Yeah."
"You seem quiet." Realizing what she just said, Spencer smirked. "More than usual."
Taking the packet of cigarettes out of her back pocket, Emily pounded it against her open palm. "Huh."
"What the hell is that?" Spencer reached for the cigarettes but Emily pulled them away.
"What do you think?"
Her friend shook in disgust. "You quit years ago. Do I have to show you the pictures of the black lungs again?" Over five years ago, Spencer had made it is own personal crusade to make Emily quit smoking. She used every trick in the book. Spencer bought the patch, the gum, hypnosis tapes, and herbs. She gathered medical journals filled with gruesome pictures. The only thing that worked was Spencer promising to let her watch The Amazing World of Gumball show on cartoon network for a year without complaining. Emily quit the very next day.
"No, don't bother with the pictures."
"Well fuck; no more Gumball then then."
Emily chuckled but didn't light up. "A deal's a deal. I quit."
"Obviously not if you're smoking again."
"I'm not."
"Then what are those? Candy?"
"Nervous habit." Emily mumbled.
Spencer sipped at her coffee and watched the people walking on the sidewalk. "What's going on with you, Fields?"
Emily's eyes glazed over "I kissed Paige."
A long moment passed between friends. Spencer took a deep breath and played with her fork. Quietly, she spoke. "Yeah, I know."
"You know?"
"Well, I guessed." She speared the remains of the eggs on her plate. "Paige's been adamant about not coming back to the apartment with me.
Emily clenched her jaw.
"And you've been weird lately. Plus the fact that there hasn't been a woman in your room for the last two weeks was practically a first." She paused and tried to make light of the situation. "Except for the time you had your tonsils out." Unable to make the joke ease the tension, Spencer stared at Emily with unforgiving eyes. "I'm not an idiot. I knew something was up between the two of you."
"We didn't sleep together."
Spencer nodded. "I know. You'd never go as far as that." She curled her fingers around her cup, knuckles turning pale against the handle. "I told you to stay away from her."
Their conversation was eerie. It was as if they were discussing anything beside the ultimate betrayal between friends. "I know."
"What the hell were you thinking?"
"I wasn't." Emily sighed loudly.
"What is it that you want, Emily? Her? Do you want her?"
Emily sucked in a shaky breath. "Not like this."
"Like what?"
"At the cost of this." Emily gestured her hands at the space between their bodies.
Spencer shrugged. "She's not the love of my life, and I'm not hers. She is just a friend that I care about and don't want her to get her because of your player tendencies"
"Doesn't matter."
"It helps. You were right. There's something missing in her. She's pretty and interesting, I'll give her that.
Emily picked up her spoon and clanked it around the edge of her coffee cup. "I guess. But it doesn't matter. I'm not picking up where you left off."
"Then don't think of it like that." Spencer breathed in. "God knows I owe you more than something like this."
Emily's eyes snapped up. "I don't want your obligations. We both know it swung both ways."
"Do you, now?"
Emily chuckled, leaning back and watched the pedestrians on the street. "I'm not an idiot, Spencer. I know you paid for my first book."
"And here I thought I was doing such a good job at keeping it secret."
"Yeah, well. Your excuse of that editor was really too thin. I knew there was no way in hell anyone could be that well connected without the greasing of some palms, somewhere."
Spencer snorted. "I didn't bribe anyone."
"You very nearly did." Emily raked a hand through her hair. "In any case, what I did was wrong, despite what we've done for each other in the past. It doesn't excuse the fact that I crossed an unspoken line."
"It wasn't unspoken. I told you to keep away. I deliberately said it." Spencer's brief temper flashed. She was angry at the betrayal of Emily more than anything else. It wasn't Paige they were speaking about. She was the catalyst. Spencer felt betrayed by her best friend, not her new current friend.
"I know." Emily clenched her fist. "Let her go and stop talking to her then." She dismissed the topic.
"And then what?"
"Whatever. She grows up, we forget."
Spencer scowled. "She's not a kid, you know. She's only about six months younger than you."
Emily hadn't realized. She seemed younger. "Let's just forget about this."
"Is that what you want?"
Emily didn't answer. It's what I needed.
"No answer?"
Emily shook her head.
Spencer nodded and tapped her fork again. "I can't be friends with her knowing she could end up getting hurt later on by you. So no matter what you decide, it's not right for me to continue to be friends with her. I know it, she knows it, hell even you know it."
"You don't have to. I mean, I know what I just said, but—"
"Of course I have to." She stood and pulled a few bills out of her bag.
"Spencer…" Emily trailed off and watched her friend put on her jacket.
"I'm going to stay somewhere else tonight." She was still hurt.
Emily never felt more wretched in her life. Seeing the betrayal play so clearly across her friend's face was more than she could take. "Spencer, I'm—"
"Don't say it. I know you think you are, but I don't think it's really true."
Emily remained seated, even though she wanted to leap to her feet. "I am, damn it! If I could take it back, I would."
Spencer smirked evilly. "Why take back something you don't regret?"
"I'm sorry, Spencer. I really am."
"No. You're sorry you hurt me. But you're not sorry about what happened with her." She left Emily at that.
Perhaps she had ruined forever the trust they once shared. That thought, beyond all others, sobered Emily and made her really think about how she could have ever let a girl come between her and Spencer.
Short update I know but anyways for those who are confused. Spencer doesn't want Emily to date Paige because of Emily being a player. Emily has ruined some of her other friendships in the past. So yeah Spencer didn't want to lose another friend like Paige but knowing that she doesn't want to lose Emily because over all Spencer will always choose Emily because maybe slightly she did or might have had a crush on her in the earlier days but not anymore. Also, Spencer might have been developing feelings for Paige but realized that Paige was not feeling the same way; but I do admit there was some sort of line of friends with benefits with these two… anyways thank you for reading
