I don't own Yu-Gi-Oh or Harry Potter
Yugi had two broken ribs and some deep bruising. Madam Pomfrey had the ribs fixed in about five minutes and the bruises had lightened considerably. She insisted on keeping him in the hospital wing overnight to make sure he was hydrated and rested properly.
The next morning dawned clear and cold. A thin coating of frost decorated the windows. Harry brushed his hand over it to look down at the Quidditch Field. The grass was covered in a thin layer of frost that sparkled in the early morning light. The Quidditch season had begun. Next Saturday would be their first match, Gryffindor vs Slytherin. If they won then Gryffindor would move up to second place in the House Championship.
He sighed heavily when he heard the other boys start moving around behind him. The events of the previous night still hung heavily over their heads and they were nervous to see how the other students that had been involved would react.
They met up with Tea and Hermione in the common room and headed down to breakfast. Joey greeted Yugi enthusiastically when he walked into the room. They looked over at the Ravenclaw table and searched for Kaiba and Mai.
Mai waved at them, she was sitting next to Kaiba. Her elbow nudged his side and he looked up from his food with a glare. She pointed over to their table and his glare shifted to them. His gaze darkened with an obvious intent. He remembered last night, and he wasn't going to forget it any time soon.
Yugi nodded at him with a large grin on his face, then turned to look at the Hufflepuff table. Ryou sat quietly, staring at his plate. His hair wasn't as spiky and he didn't have the aura of malice he'd had yesterday.
They sighed in relief. It seemed whatever had possessed Bakura was gone.
The table discussion quickly moved to the upcoming Quidditch match. No one wanted to recount the events of the night before yet. They were just too real.
Wood had decided that Yugi and Harry would be their secret weapons in the upcoming season, and as such they should be as discrete as possible. But the news that Yugi was the new chaser and Harry was seeker had leaked and spread like wildfire. Through the week people, mostly Slytherins, kept coming up to them and telling them they would be running around under them with a mattress. Finally, the day before the match, Yami got sick of it and almost started a Shadow Game with a fourth year before Yugi was able to calm him down.
To head off another close call the group headed outside for break. Hermione did a clever little spell that allowed her to conjure some bright blue flames that could be stored in a jam jar. They sat with their backs to it, soaking up the warmth.
Harry's nerves were much worse than Yugi's, so Hermione lent him a library book called Quidditch Through the Ages that he read with single minded determination. He figured that if he focused more on the book he wouldn't think about the upcoming match.
It wasn't working.
"Teacher alert." Joey hissed as he spotted Snape limping across the courtyard. They all moved a little closer together to block the fire.
Unfortunately they must have looked guilty because Snape headed straight for them. He glared momentarily and turned his attention to Harry.
"What's that you've got there, Potter?"
Harry held Quidditch Through the Ages out so he could see the title.
"Library books are not to be taken outside the school. Give it to me. Five points from Gryffindor." He snatched the book up and limped away.
"I bet he just made that rule up." Tristan growled under his breath.
"I wonder what's wrong with his leg."
"I don't know Tea, but I hope it's really hurting him," Ron said bitterly.
That evening the Gryffindor common room was crowded and noisy. Ron was beating Tristan at a game of Wizard's chess, Tea and Joey were finishing their Charms homework (Tea was anyway, Joey was hindering), and Hermione was checking over Harry and Yugi's homework for them. Yugi was thumbing through his Duel Monsters cards again. His grandpa had sent more for his friends and he was helping Harry to put together a better deck.
Harry tried to concentrate on the cards, but his mind kept turning to the match tomorrow. He stood suddenly and Yugi looked up quizzically.
"You ok?"
"If by ok you mean stressed out of my mind, then yes."
Yugi's brow furrowed slightly. "Me too. I feel like there's a Kuriboh in my stomach and someone's been playing Multiply since last week."
Harry cracked a smile. "The only thing that's helped me was Quidditch Through the Ages."
"But Professor Snape has that."
"I know. I think I'll go ask him if I can have it back."
Yugi's eyes widened slightly, then he smiled. "I'll come with you then. Maybe a walk will help."
Harry nodded and they both stood, telling their friends they were going to get the book back.
"Better you than me mate." Ron moved his rook into position to check Tristan's king for the third time in a row. Tristan growled and Joey laughed before turning to Yugi.
"If you die can I have your Dark Magician, Yugi?"
Yugi laughed at Joey and he followed Harry out of the portrait hole. The walk to the staffroom was short, except for the staircase that refused to move to the right floor, and they soon stood in front of the door. Yugi knocked on the door, but there was no response. Harry pushed the door ajar and they peeked inside.
Snape and Filch were the only occupants. Snape was holding his robes above his knees and cursing under his breath as Filch slathered some green goop onto one of his legs. It was mangled and bloody, leaking some sort of puss from the thick of it. Filch finished with the goo and started wrapping it in bandages.
"Blasted thing." Snape said quietly, muttering another curse. "How are you supposed to keep your eyes on all three heads at once?"
"Did you hear that Yugi?"
"Yes. He must have tried to get past that three headed dog."
"I agree. I wonder why. What was he looking for?"
Yugi backed away and Harry tried to shut the door quietly, but it creaked just before it closed all the way.
"POTTER!"
Snape shoved the door open, his face twisted in fury. His robes covered his legs again, but they could clearly see he was heavily leaning on one.
"I was just wondering if I could have my book back."
"GET OUT! OUT!"
Not caring to point out that they were already out they turned on their heels and rushed down the corridor before Snape could take points from Gryffindor.
They sprinted all the way up to Gryffindor tower, leaping through the portrait hole and collapsing into armchairs.
"Did you get it?"
Harry shook his head, breathing heavily. In a low whisper he started telling them what he had seen.
"Yami and I think he must have been trying to get past that three headed dog at Halloween. He must have been headed there when we saw him right before the Troll."
"He probably let the troll in too." Joey growled under his breath, swearing in Japanese. "It certainly made enough of a distraction and I don't think he would have minded if it had killed us. He'd probably have been glad if it did."
"That's a horrible thing to say Joey." Tea glared at him and slapped him upside the head for swearing.
"We know he's not very nice, but he wouldn't try to steal something Dumbledore is trying to keep safe." Hermione nodded resolutely.
"Honestly, Hermione, you think all teachers are saints or something." They both glared at Ron and he flinched slightly.
"I want to know what the dog's guarding. It must be pretty important for Snape to risk getting his leg chomped off for it."
"I think so too Tristan. But how can we find out?"
They went to bed with their heads buzzing. The expression on Snape's face kept flashing in Harry's mind. He didn't get much sleep, but he definitely wasn't thinking much about the Quidditch match anymore.
"You've got to eat something."
"I don't want anything."
"Just a bit of toast."
"Not hungry."
"Come on! You can't pass up all this food!"
Yugi's face was pale and Harry looked like he was about to puke.
"Harry! Just eat a sausage link or something. You both need your strength. Seekers are always the ones who get clobbered first."
"Thanks. That makes me feel loads better Ron."
The whole school seemed to be out in the stands for the game. Even though the seats were raised as high as the goals many students still brought binoculars. It got hard to see what was happening sometimes.
The stands were decorated with Gryffindor colors of Red and Gold and Slytherin colors of Silver and Green. The cheering was deafening and banners declaring support for the teams were waved by the students. The Gryffindor first years had taken a sheet and painted a large lion on it with the team's names depicted around it. Hermione had done a tricky little charm that made the paint flash in different colors and Tea had done one that made the lion move around on the cloth.
In the locker room Harry and Yugi were changing into their scarlet Quidditch robes. Most of the team changed in silence, trying to focus on the game. The atmosphere would have been heavy and stressful if not for the twins. They kept telling jokes and falling over each other. It was impossible for the team to not at least crack a smile.
Yugi tried to relax as he changed, but he couldn't get rid of the heavy feeling in his stomach. He pulled the robes over his head and took a deep breath.
I don't know if I can do this.
"Yugi. Remember, I'm right here."
Yugi smiled at the gentle reminder. "I know, but I'm still nervous."
"Do you want me to take over?"
"Maybe. But I'd like to try."
"All right. Just let me know. But I'm taking over if it get's dangerous."
Wood cleared his throat for silence. Yugi hurried and finished changing.
"All right men."
"And women," said Chaser Angelina Johnson.
"And women." Wood conceded. "This is it."
"The big one," said Fred.
"The one we've all been waiting for," said George.
"We were on the team last year," Fred told Harry. "We know Oliver's speech by heart."
"Shut up you two. This is the best team Gryffindor's had in years. We're going to win. I know it."
He glared at them as if to say "Or else."
"Right. It's time. Good luck, all of you."
They all nodded and grabbed their brooms. Yugi wiped sweat from his hands onto the inside of his sleeves before following Fred and George out onto the Quidditch Pitch.
There must have been a spell in place to keep the sound from the locker room because as soon as they walked out they were hit by a wall of noise. The teams lined up in a circle around Madam Hooch who stood in the center of the field with the chest of Quidditch balls.
"Mount your brooms, please."
Harry and Yugi clambered onto their Nimbus Two Thousands.
Madam Hooch gave a piercing blast on her silver whistle.
The brooms rose high into the air. They were off.
"And the Quaffle is taken immediately by Angelina Johnson of Gryffindor. What an excellent chaser that girl is. And quite attractive too."
"JORDAN!"
"Sorry Professor."
The twin's friend, Lee Jordan, was commentating the match, closely watched by Professor McGonagall.
Yugi tuned out Lee's voice and focused on the game. Angelina sped past the Slytherin chasers, follosed quickly by Katie Bell. Marcus Flint, the Slytherin captain, flew above her. He and the other Slytherin chasers quickly closed and tried to box her in. Angelina passed to Katie Bell and turned in a loop to shadow Adrian Pucey momentarily. Marcus flint tried to intercept the pass, but a had to dodge a bludger sent his way by Fred. Katie got clear of the meelee and headed towards the goals, a Slytherin chaser hot on her heels.
Yugi had focused on getting behind everyone else. He was small and fast and in practice Wood had decided that he wanted to keep that secret until they really needed it, so at first he was keeping Yugi in reserve. Once Katie got clear of the others she launched the quaffle at him and he snatched it out of the air. Grinning he headed toward the goal. His Nimbus Two-Thousand was faster than the Slytherin brooms, and he outstripped them easily. He spotted Angelina ahead and threw the quaffle at her, she caught it with the tips of her fingers, then had to drop it as a bludger blasted past her hand, sent her way by a Slytherin beater. She growled as Marcus Flint caught it and turned toward the Gryffindor goals. Katie followed him closely and caught the quaffle when the Twins shot a bludger at him and made him drop it. She and Angelina kept up a tight series of quick passes all the way up to the goals, neatly dodging each Slytherin chaser until Angelina shot it past their keeper and into the center goal.
"GRYFFINDOR SCORE!"
[10/0] Most of the crowd erupted in cheers. The boos coming from the Slytherin stands were drowned out quickly by the Gryffindor's jubilation.
Katie Bell got the quaffle from the Slytherin's quickly and passed it to Yugi. He grinned and started weaving through the players. The extra speed from the Nimbus Two-Thousand and from his light frame allowed him to quickly outstrip everyone. He passed to Angelina who dodged Marcus Flint and passed to Katie Bell. A bludger grazed her side and she gasped in pain before passing again to Angelina who scored again. [20/0]
Above the action, Harry flew in a couple of loop-the-loops to burn off his excitement at Gryffindor's lead. He grinned widely then returned to searching the pitch for the golden snitch. He thought he saw it over by the Hufflepuff stands, but it turned out to just be a reflection off Yugi's Puzzle. A bludger came pelting towards him, followed quickly by one of the Weasleys. He dodged it quickly then grinned at Fred.
"All right there, Harry?" He had time to yell before he beat the bludger towards Marcus Flint.
Harry laughed and turned his attention back to the pitch, keeping one ear on the commentary.
"And Slytherin takes possession of the quaffle again. Flint flies past Bell and dodges Mutou to take a shot at the goal. A spectacular save by Wood and the quaffle is in Gryffindor hands again. Mutou practically shoots past Pucey and passes to Johnson. Bell dodges Flint and Johnson passes to Bell who passes to Mutou. Nice set of passes there. Mutou approaches the Slytherin goals. Close bludger there. Mutou lines up and throws. GRYFFINDOR SCORE!" [30/0]
The stands erupted once again and Yugi grinned widely. Yami was getting excited too and Yugi could feel his mind more closely before. He'd been talking him through a few tough spots, but now he could almost feel him with him, working in tandem.
Watch that bludger.
Flint's trying to block us again.
Lean left.
Then right.
Not that much.
Perfect.
Catch.
Pass.
It was almost instinctual. Their minds worked together, bouncing off each others thoughts to find the perfect solution and follow it through. They grinned as they loop-the-looped past Flint, laughing at his stunned face and caught the quaffle while upside down. They passed to Katie Bell and positioned themselves near the goals once more to catch a pass from Angelina and score once more. [40/0]
The Gryffindor spectators were on their feet. The entire team was playing in perfect harmony and the crowd was loving it. Every move was met with screams of approval.
The first years were especially enthusiastic, the lion on their banner roaring gleefully with the crowd.
Harry lost track of looking for the snitch momentarily in the celebrating. Then he spotted the Slytherin seeker, Terence Higgs, pelting towards the ground. He looked down and saw a fleeing flutter of gold wings and he followed. He caught up quickly and they both fell to the ground. The snitch swerved and they followed closely, barreling through the other players in their attempts to get it. But when it swerved behind the stands they lost sight of it and had to return to scanning the field for a glimpse.
Harry dodged another bludger and tried to turn to the left, but his broom refused to move. He frowned and tried again, but this time it swerved right and the tail bucked up behind him. Harry gave a startled yelp and the broom gave a lurch before rising several feet in the air.
Below him in the stands, people were beginning to take notice of his broom's peculiar behavior.
"What's going on with Harry?"
"Is he supposed to be going that high?"
"What is he doing?"
Harry gave another yelp as the broom rose higher and bucked with more strength. The players were starting to take notice now. The Weasley twins tried to fly up to Harry to get him off the broom, but he rose higher every time they got close. Eventually they took to circling below him to try and catch him if he fell.
Yugi and Yami watched closely and frowned.
Something is wrong. There is a strange magic around him.
The Puzzle started to glow softly and they looked down at it.
The Shadow Magic in the Puzzle is reacting to whatever it is.
Can you stop it? I don't want Harry to fall.
I think I can. I can try anyway.
They nodded and focused again on the broom. The jerking slowed and then stopped completely. Harry tried to move again, but the broom reacted very slowly.
Yami growled softly. It's powerful, whatever it is.
He tried a little harder and the broom responded more quickly to Harry. He grinned, then frowned.
Do you feel that Yugi?
Yeah. Like a tingling in the back of my mind. What is it?
It feels like foreign magic, but there is a familiar quality to it as well.
The tingling started to increase and Yugi gasped in pain, grabbing his head.
YAMI!
Yugi's broom dropped a couple of feet as he struggled to focus through the pain. Yami tried to help him, but he had to keep half his mind on keeping Harry's broom frozen. He could feel the magic pushing there too and if he let go the buildup was sure to knock Harry off.
Everyone in the stands had their attention focused on Harry. Flint took the opportunity to grab the fallen quaffle and score five times without anyone noticing. [40/50] Binoculars were trained directly on him and they gasped with each movement. Joey was biting his knuckles so hard he didn't notice the beads of blood welling under his teeth. He did notice, however, when Hermione yanked the binoculars he'd borrowed from Yugi out of his hands.
"Hey!"
"Shh!" She snapped and turned the binoculars not to the field, but to the other stands.
"I knew it!"
"Knew what?" Ron asked.
"It's Snape. He's jinxing the broom."
"Jinxing the broom? How can you tell?"
"I've read all about them Tristan. You have to keep eye contact. Snape isn't blinking and I can see his lips moving."
"Well what are we going to do about it then?"
"Stay here. Keep an eye on Harry." Hermione turned quickly and started pushing through the spectators. Tea snorted and turned her attention back to the field. She took her attention off Harry for a moment and tried to find Yugi. When she spotted him, she frowned.
"Does Yugi look like he's in pain to you?"
"Sort of. What is going on?"
Hermione hurried along the stands. When she got near the teachers she crouched down low and sped towards Snape, knocking over several Professors on her way. She muttered an apology before she crouched on the steps below Snape. Muttering a short spell she pointed her wand at Snape's robes and watched as flames caught on the dark fabric. She grinned and waited for the teachers to notice before she walked quietly back the way she had come. Once she was away from the excitement she turned back to the field.
The piercing pain vanished as quickly as it had come. Yugi sighed with relief and Yami grinned. They looked back up at Harry and Yami cut the magic keeping the broom frozen. They watched, grinning, as he started looking for the snitch again.
A glint of gold caught Harry's eye and he dove for it without thinking. It continued to pelt towards the ground. With his hand outstretched Harry followed, pulling himself up in time to avoid crashing. The snitch fluttered temptingly in front of him, just out of reach. He leaned forward, stretching towards it. With a last heave he toppled from his broom and onto the ground barely five feet below him. The crowd gasped as he cupped his hands to his mouth and spat out the tiny gold ball.
"I've got the snitch!" He shouted, holding it in the air. [190/50]
The match ended in complete confusion. The players landed and Marcus Flint stormed over to Madam Hooch.
"He didn't catch it! He nearly swallowed it!"
"There are no rules against it Mr. Flint. Gryffindor won, and that is that."
Yugi landed wobbly, barely able to stand on his feet. The rest of their friends rushed onto the field and helped them off, walking quickly to Hagrid's Hut. Soon they were all sitting around Hagrid's very large table, holding steaming cups of tea.
"It was Snape," Ron explianed, "Hermione and I saw him. He was cursing your broomstick, muttering, he wouldn't take his eyes off you."
"It was creepy." Joey added.
"Rubbish," said Hagrid. "Why would Snape do somethin' like that?"
They all looked at each other, wondering what to tell him. Yugi sighed.
"Harry and I found out something about him. He tried to get past that three-headed dog on Halloween. It bit him. We think he was trying to steal whatever it's guarding."
Hagrid dropped the teapot.
"How do you know about Fluffy?" he asked.
"Fluffy!?" Joey choked on his tea.
"Yeah. He's mine. Bought him of a Greek chappie I met in the pub las' year. I let him to Dumbledore to guard the-"
"Yes?" Harry asked eagerly.
"Now don't ask me anymore," said Hagrid gruffly. "That's top secret that is."
"But Snape's trying to steal it." Tea tried not to raise her voice.
"Rubbish," said Hagrid again. "Snape's a Hogwarts teach, he'd do nothin' of the sort."
"So why did he just try and kill Harry?" Cried Hermione.
"I'm tellin' yeh, yer wrong! I don't know why Harry's broom acted like that, but Snape wouldn' try an' kill a student! Now, listen to me, all seven of yeh – yer meddlin' in things that don' concern yeh. It's dangerous. You forget that dog, an' you forget what it's guardin', that's between Professor Dumbledore and Nicholas Flamel-"
"Aha!" said Harry, "so there's someone called Nicholas Flamel involved, is there?"
Hagrid frowned and slapped his hand to his face before ushering them out of his cabin. As they walked up to the castle Yami took over and stopped them.
"I'm not sure why Snape would want to kill Harry. But I am sure that someone was using Shadow Magic. I was able to freeze Harry's broom so it wouldn't knock him off, but someone tried attacking me and Yugi mentally."
"So that's why you were doubled over in pain!" Tea frowned.
Yami nodded. "And whoever attacked me was probably also responsible for the attack on Harry's broom."
"But wouldn't that mean -"
"Someone else at Hogwarts has Shadow Powers, and they know how to use them."
Sorry about the slow update, again.
The Quidditch match was a pain to write. Tons of action. It was also very fun to try and figure out, but there were a lot of characters to keep track of. Let me know what you thought though, I could use some constructive criticism.
Thanks for reading! :D
