Chapter 6: Vega Star from the West

"Peppermint?" Trina inquired, taking a sip of the cup and breathing out, "it tastes good!"

"David, how's dinner?" Holly asked from the second floor, preparing the guest room for their guests. "Towels are in the closet Lyn."

"Del, quit moving so much," Jade requested of her brother, who was shivering a bit, sniffling and searching for heat, "mum, is there a drying spell?"

"Phoeb!" His brother whined, and she became exasperated and he whined some more. "I'm cold!"

"Gimme that!" She demanded, taking his towel which was chaffing her bare arms, not caring when he began whimpering then placing it in front of the chimney.

"Jade..." Tori began with a soft frown, but the pale girl had taken her brother by the waist as she stood, just to sit on the towel, kid in lap now, her towel holding her hair off of her.

"Saying?" She sneered back.

"Uhh..."

"Yeah," the child was shivering, but comfortable, "thought so."

"Jade baby," Lyra called, "we can use the bath."

"Coming," the girl replied, standing and taking the towel, manhandling the kid again; she then glared at the eldest Vega who was snickering, "got a problem?"

"You shower with your mum?" Trina asked, grin in place, and the other shrugged.

"Didn't you guys do the same when you were four?" The other inquired, and when the youngest nodded, she nodded back. "Thought so; see, that's how old little Jet—"

"Phoeb!" The boy remarked, sneezing, indignant at being called little.

"Here is," she continued mimicking to biting his ear as he giggled at her antics, "but he gets fidgety so there must be at least two; one to distract and the other to shower."

"Since you're getting wet anyway," Tori reasoned, "you might as well shower."

"Yup," the other replied, popping the p and going up the stairs as the hostess went down. "Thanks Mrs. Vega."

"No Phoenix," the woman replied, "thank you, for bringing my friend back. And call me Holly."

"Yeah, yeah," the girl replied with indifference, but for some reason, Holly chuckled fondly.

"You certainly have some Sirius in you," Holly said, but it only confused both children.

"Phoeb is serious!" Jet began chanting, just to be annoying.

"You're still getting a bath," his sister began.

"Oh, pooh!" The boy remarked and the girls downstairs laughed.

"Okay girls," Holly began, taking a deep breath, "I'm ready. But before any questions can be asked, I need to tell you the whole story."

"Okay mum," Trina said.

"Yes mum," Tori agreed as well, and Holly began a painful tell.

"Your father and I, we lived in England," she began, grateful that David and Lyra were both in the house, since even if David took over the tale, she would be a mess, "back then, I was Holly Evans; my parents had a bad habit of naming us after plants and flowers."

"We've aunts and uncles?!" Tori asked, before slapping a hand over her mouth; her mother laughed while her sister glared.

"Aunts, your father is an only child," their mother said with a sweet smile, "Petunia is the eldest, I, the youngest but in the middle, was Lily...

"Lily was older by two years, she went to Hogwarts before me, and once we both were there, we met several people," she smiled in the direction of the kitchen, "David, his best friends, James, Sirius, Lupin and Peter, and my sister married James, while I married his cute, year younger neighbor."

The girls waited for a bit, expectant. That couldn't be the end of it, could it? Right then, Jade came down, looking drenched. She grumbled a bit, exhausted by her little brother, who was resting a bit. Holly motioned for her to join them, and Tori offered to help her dry her long hair. Suspicious, she agreed, but was obviously uncomfortable, at first.

"I was starting my Auror career when He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, the Dark Lord, appeared and caused chaos." She shivered. "He had a blood-status policy, and tried to do away with muggles, and muggle-borns."

"Is he the one who allowed the attack on Treen?" Tori asked softy, worried; she stopped drying the other's hair, but Jade could tell that not even the Vega girls knew why the eldest had been sick.

"Yes, he made it easier, as he had many followers," Holly breathed softly, "among those, your father Jade, though he managed to simply find himself without magic, and out of England."

"Good," the girl replied grimly and softly, "he's nuts to believe that blood is important; do they teach about the Nazi war?"

The siblings began muttering in agreement, seeing where the pale girl was taking things. The murmurs soon stopped, and Holly continued, looking pained.

"A year after we came to America, he was finally defeated," Holly was trying hard to not cry, "by your year-old cousin, after he killed your aunt and uncle."

"We don't have all the details," David said, coming to join them since dinner was done and it was just simmering; just then, Lyra and Jet (who was happy after his short nap, annoyed at his mild hunger) began coming down, "but it was clear that one of the best friend of the Potters had betrayed them."

"And I'm serious," the blonde said once she was down; the girls noticed how the Vega parents looked at their guest, "my cousin and older brother would never hurt those two. He's Harry's Godfather!"

"Harry Potter," Holly began crying, "Dumbledore decided that he would be safer with my sister Petunia..."

"Oh, Holly," David went to her, and held her close, "he's a strong boy, a really strong child; he can make it through those magic-haters."

"Now, it's your choice," Lyra took the lead as her youngest went to her eldest, the boy jumping on his sister, "do you want to go to Hogwarts, knowing the dangers?"

"Isn't this Dark Lord dead?" Jade asked, startling everyone; at the looks she received, she glared. "What?! That other one is a mouth full!"

"We fear that it's more of a delay than anything," David muttered, the women nodded.

"Well, I'm going," Trina said with decision.

"So am I," Tori intoned immediately.

"And me!" Jet said, giggling madly; he was squirming, trying to get somewhere but his sister held him tight.

"He spoke for me," Jade said fondly.

"Then you girls better be careful," McGonagall commented and everyone turned.

"Where's the kitty?" The boy asked with a pout, and from the kitchen Midnight came in bounds, licking a milk bear he had. "Kitty!"

"You came in time Professor," David remarked as everyone chuckled at the boy's antic.

"I'm hungry!" The boy pouted and everyone readily agreed.

Table ready, they sat down, Jet on his sister's lap and Midnight on the hood, their mother close to make sure they both ate. Lyra felt it was a fortune that Jade was so doting on her kid brother, it made him admire her and he was less difficult about everything when she was involved. They all finished their cups of potions, feeling good and right after dinner, the girls (plus boy) left to watch some T.V. in the living room until it was bed-time. The Vega grown-ups gave Jade a cauldron cake and a butter beer, giving their daughters the ones Poppy had given them and wishing the pale girl had a great day. She smiled as she looked at her quarter eaten cake, since her brother had wanted some, and began eating. The boy was asleep in her lap, with the cat near. Tori offered her clothes, so that she still had the ones she had brought for the trip to England; Jade just acted suspicious, and after much deliberation, agreed.

"Hey Vega," Jade began as they got ready for bed; "I'm going off to HC and getting my gifts."

"Want me to come?" The other asked softly.

"Don't be daft," she remarked, and Tori could see the green-blue eyes rolling, "I need you to cover for me."

That said, she apparated at the conservatory, looking around for her presents, just to find the table empty. With a sigh of mild annoyance and disappointment, she approached it and saw something that looked like a letter. She took it, and began reading. Apparently, André had been the one to come back and get them for her, letting her know who had given her gifts and for her to check on the gifts when they met again. She smiled at that, and shook her head; Jade had never felt more loved by the friends she had made. Knowing she wasn't the easiest person to handle, the fact that they cared that much was touching. She then heard steps from behind and turned, and went pale.

"Father..."

"I knew you would come back," the man sneered, going at her, "you're quite rebellious, Durmstrang does sound better for you and I can contact my good friend without worries."

"I'm going to Hogwarts," she replied with conviction.

"But, I already sent an owl in reply," when she blinked, he knew she hadn't, "saying thank you for the opportunity, we'll take our chances with Karkaroff."

"Well, I'm not going," she said with finality, jumping off the table and getting ready to run but he took hold of her arm, "let go!"

"Now—" He was tackled from behind and they fell on a patch of grass; it was raining, and the mud made the girl slippery.

Snarling, he turned to look and saw the youngest Vega child holding his waist. Taking her by the cuff of her pajamas, he pulled her off him and was ready to strike if something hadn't crashed against his nose first. He let go of the girl to cover his nose with both hands, outraged at bleeding his pure blood.

"Don't you dare touch her," it had been Jade, shaking her fist that obviously stung; her other arm was around the girl's chest; the hold began at the hip and the hand gripped the right shoulder, Jade was taking steps away from him, holding the girl close, "and if you try to come after me or my brother or my mother... I'll kill you."

"Is that a threat?!" He spat, but she just sneered.

"You taught me," she reminded him, "that those, are promises."

He stood and went for her, just as she tripped with some mud and fell backwards. It was reflex, she had trained hard on making it so; whenever she fell, she always remembered the last place she felt safe and her apparition triggered. The girls fell on the bathtub of the Vega household, their legs pushing against the faucet and they were sprayed with more water. It fell on their chests, and they were simply heaving. Tori was the first to recover, but she was unable to stand, so she could only pull Jade to a sitting position. They remained in silence.

"Sorry about these," the pale girl muttered, motioning to the pajamas, "and thanks for not listening."

"Well, I thought he might be waiting," Tori replied, shivering; she was the one beneath the running water, "and perhaps you might need the backup."

Jade frowned and the Latina winced, muttering a sorry that fell on deaf ears. The pale girl soon had shampoo in her hands and began helping the other clean her scalp from the mud and grass. In such fashion, they aided each other on the impromptu bath and once they were done, they found their mothers waiting for them; they were kids, and were used to having PE in a common changing room with other girls. Add to that, one was used to sometimes having a shower with her sister, the other with her brother and mother. When no big deal was done about the shared shower, their mothers decided not to say anything in that regard and just helped them dried.

"One of you is going to have to do some explaining," Lyra said softly, taking out the hairdryer as Holly left to get the girls some pajamas and underwear, "and other times, the truth is best left unsaid."

Tori was confused, but waited patiently as the woman dried her daughter's hair first. She was done quickly, obviously being used to handling the huge amount of hair. When she began drying the Latina's hair, the hostess returned. Jade took the time to quickly and efficiently explain the situation.

"Tori, why would you agree?" Holly asked her once the hair was done and she was changing. "Really, trying to check out who had seen more placed at this hour... I'm glad nothing happened to both of you."

"Jade!" Lyra sighed in mild exasperation. "How long do you intend on keeping this silly competition?!"

The girl pouted. Tori bowed her head, blushing furiously and couldn't even say sorry. Leaving them at that, they sent them off to their shared room. They began to wonder if it was a good idea.

"Right now, I cannot help but think the disaster she would cause in Gryffindor," Lyra remarked, looking conflicted.

"I would hate to think what Slytherin would do to her..." Holly replied back, and with a sigh, they left for the kitchen.

Hogwarts was bound to be much more interesting that year... On the room, Jade passed her friend (or was it enemy?) a milkyway bar, and she began chewing on one of her own. Throwing the wrappers into the bin, they waited and sure enough, their mothers brought some dinner leftovers with a glass of grape juice. They ate in silence, and once they were done, they promptly fell asleep.
