Chapter 11: Old and New Mistakes

Kakashi led his team through enemy territory. He was extremely tense and on constant high alert. He wasn't sure if he had ever been more stressed in his life. Rin and Obito followed closely behind him, also watching out for enemies. Finally, Kakashi sensed them. It was the two Iwa-nin that had ambushed them last time.

He signaled Rin and Obito to sprint on his mark. They seemed surprised at him, and Obito opened his mouth to say something. However, Rin silenced him with a look. Kakashi was relieved that she had stopped him in time. He felt both the Iwa-nin get closer. Now! He gave the signal and they took off at full speed.

Kakashi knew that the enemies would be shocked only for a moment, and then they would be running after his team. He had to form some kind of plan.

"There's two of them coming up behind us. Rin, you attack from long range while Obito and I go in," Kakashi ordered. "We'll use Plan C. Let's do this." Over the last month, he and Rin had come up with plans out of boredom while waiting for Obito to show up for training. They then decided to inform Obito as well. They needed to know what to do if Minato wasn't there to protect them. Rin nodded her assent and jumped up into a tree, vanishing from sight. Kakashi and Obito ceased their running and turned around to face the two Iwa-nin who had followed them.

Kakashi threw some shuriken in an attempt to get the enemy shinobi out into the open, and it worked. These ninjas were skilled, but not as skilled as Kakashi was. Well, it wasn't like they knew that fact. Then, Obito used 'Katon! Goukakyuu no Jutsu!' and blew fire towards them. The enemy ninjas dodged easily, but Rin used the opportunity created by the fire to throw some senbon. One of her senbon barely managed to scrape the arm of an Iwa-nin. However, just a scrape was enough.

Kakashi took on the unhurt ninja while Obito attacked the one who had been scraped. The scraped shinobi began to move more and more sluggishly, Rin's paralyzing poison working its way through his bloodstream. Obito leapt forward at an opening and slashed at the Iwa-nin with a kunai, finishing him.

Meanwhile, Kakashi was fighting with the remaining Iwa-nin. Then, the Iwa-nin made clones, and he used the opening to get to Rin. Her position had been revealed by throwing her senbon. Kakashi became distracted and a clone stabbed him in the shoulder, causing him to wince. He was usually able to stay calm and focused, but on this day, he most definitely wasn't going to be able to.

The Iwa-nin got to Rin, She tried to cut him with a kunai, but he grabbed her hand. She then stabbed him in the side with a kunai she had been hiding in the other hand. The Iwa-nin grimaced, but it wasn't enough to take him out. He rendered Rin unconscious and disappeared.

Kakashi was frozen with despair. Had he changed nothing? They had taken out one of the Iwa-nin, but the end result was the same. Rin had been kidnapped.

"Let's go after her!" Obito shouted, snapping Kakashi out of his trance. Obito will die, a small voice said in the back of his mind. He hesitated for a second. Then, he nodded, and he and Obito began tracking the Iwa-nin and Rin.

They arrived at the same cave as last time. To Obito, it was a new place, but Kakashi already knew the layout. That was an advantage. They crept into the cave, Obito being surprisingly quiet. Most likely because Rin's life was on the line. They saw the remaining Iwa-nin questioning Rin, who seemed to be under a genjutsu, thankfully still alive. He had bandages wrapped around his stomach, trying to stop the bleeding from the wound that Rin gave him. The Iwa-nin looked up as they walked in. He turned around to face them and smirked. This was the Iwa-nin that had killed Obito last time.

"Obito, I'll go in. You back me up," Kakashi murmured.

"No," Obito replied stubbornly.

"I'm the leader! This isn't the time to argue," Kakashi said, annoyed.

"I'm tired of constantly being protected by you," Obito told him. "You sacrificed your eye, you gave me the already weakened ninja before, and now I'm supposed to stand back and do nothing. Watch out, because I'm going to become a powerful ninja, more powerful than you. And then you'll treat me as an equal."

"Even though I'm a jounin and you're not?" Kakashi asked, unable to resist saying it.

"I'll become a jounin soon enough," Obito snapped.

Kakashi thought about it. "Fine, I'll back you up. Go for it." Obito stepped forward, and Kakashi added, "I trust you as a comrade, so there's no need to prove yourself." Obito stopped walking at this, and the Iwa-nin rushed at him. Kakashi waited for Obito to do something, but Obito wasn't moving. Maybe he was in shock from what Kakashi had said. Kakashi panicked as the Iwa-nin swung a blade down towards Obito. However, Obito dodged when it was centimeters from him, his eyes red, the Sharingan spinning in their depths. Kakashi felt an intense pain in his left eye, and he fell to his knees. He forced himself to stand, the pain in his eye lessening, but not disappearing completely.

Using that moment, Kakashi, while keeping an eye on Obito just in case, went over to Rin, expelling the genjutsu she was under. As she woke up, Obito finished up his battle. He had won, ironically avenging himself. However, as they exited the cave, they were surrounded by many enemies. Kakashi narrowed his eyes as he, Obito, and Rin stood back to back.

Then, the fight began. Since he was back to back with his team, he had no hesitations about pulling his hitai-ate up and using his Sharingan. Kakashi hadn't been sure if he would still have it once Obito got it, but he did. He wondered if it would fade away later. Kakashi shook his head to clear his thoughts and focus on the battle. He was defeating opponents with Raikiri, Chidori's advanced form. He was tempted to use Kamui, but if his younger body wasn't able to handle it, that would be bad. He could collapse in the middle of the fight, so he refrained.

Minato showed up relatively quickly, teleported to them using the special kunai. Kakashi sighed and pushed his hitai-ate up. Now that Minato was here, it wasn't like he needed it anyway. All of the Iwa-nin were taken care of fairly quickly. Once the battle was over, Kakashi let reality set in. His team was alive. All of them. It took all of his strength not to fall to the ground in relief. He told himself that he had time to do that afterwards.

The pain in his eye came back to him at that moment. He put a hand over his eye and winced. Rin noticed this, and she shot him a worried look as she began to heal his shoulder. Once he was healed, they all went to complete the mission.

It was a week later. The bridge had been destroyed and all the members of Team Minato had been healed and released from the hospital. Now, they were eating dinner at Minato's. Kushina would have wanted to come, but she was away on a mission at the moment.

"I just remembered," Rin said suddenly. "Kakashi's eye was paining him on our last mission. Kakashi, you should get it checked out by a doctor." They were all sitting around the table, about to dig in to their food.

Obito was confused. "How did we forget about that?"

"Probably because we were caught up in everything else that happened, and Kakashi didn't mention it at all," Rin replied.

Minato frowned in concern. "Kakashi, you shouldn't hide injuries."

"I'm not injured. I'm fine," Kakashi said.

"You didn't seem fine," Rin pointed out.

"Well, I'm fine now." Truthfully, Kakashi had no idea why his eye had hurt. He wondered if that meant his Sharingan would disappear. He had been using it during the battle last week, so if that was the case, then it wasn't an immediate thing. Maybe it was some sort of space-time disruption or paradox.

"If you don't want to go to the hospital," Rin said, "then just let me look at it." She reached over, but Kakashi immediately shot back, his chair falling to the ground. Everyone was staring at him.

"I'll be back," he muttered, rushing out of the room and into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. He pulled up his hitai-ate and looked at himself in the mirror. His Sharingan swirled lazily, almost as if it were mocking him. How would he get out of this? Suddenly, the door swung open. Kakashi realized that he had forgotten to lock it in his haste.

"Kakashi, Rin sent me after you. Are you…" Obito trailed off, his eyes meeting Kakashi's mismatched ones through the mirror. Kakashi quickly covered his Sharingan with his hand, but it was too late. Obito had seen.

"Wha-What…how…" Shock and confusion were prominent on Obito's face, but flitting in his eyes was also hints of betrayal. Kakashi couldn't say anything. He was frozen, thinking about how he had just made a huge mistake.
