uhh... hey... yeah its not like i haven't updated in like six months... totally... (im really sorry but i just couldn't think of what to write and i had a stressful year.)
Walking down to the dining hall, Orrin told me about what it was like when we were kids.
"As I said before, I'm not a part of your family, I was a family friend, but I somehow gained powers like your family trait, like you saw on the battlefield. Your family and I traveled around a lot, mostly on ships, but sometimes by land. I remember one time, when we had to walk for a while, and you got tired, you and I got on your brother's back and you made a wave in the ground that pushed us along so that we could catch up to the group." he chuckled and ran a hand through his dark hair. "You were a really cute kid, you know that?"
"Really?" I asked, slightly blushing.
"Yeah, you were really short and would smile at pretty much anything. In fact, this one time, you scared a normal girl half to death with your powers and when she ran away, you just laughed like there was no tomorrow."
"I can't believe that I'd do that." I huffed, putting my hands on my hips.
"Well it's true! Just ask Jared, he'll back me up."
"Well if you insist... Race you down the rest of the way!" I shouted, already running. I smiled when I heard Orrin's feet pounding at the earth behind me, and him snickering a little bit.
"And you know?" he asked from behind me. "You never grew out of the cute stage!" I blushed hard and continued to race down the hill.
Reaching the hall, very out of breath, I leaned on the doors until Orrin caught up, which didn't take too long. We both stood there for a moment, catching our breath, before giggling and walking into the dining hall.
At the far end, I saw Hiccup and his friends talking over a big book. Ruffnut and Tuffnut were arguing, (which at this point, I figured was normal) Fishlegs was talking about the book on the table excitedly, Snotlout was flexing at Astrid, and Astrid was gazing at Hiccup, who was the only one that was actually eating. I headed towards them, but Orrin grabbed my wrist and pulled me away.
"Why don't we so with them?" I asked, looking over my shoulder. Hiccup had looked up, and was watching us walk away.
"Well, I think that we should have time with people like... Us, you know? Just Me, You, and Jared?"
"Oh, yeah, I guess that's okay."
When we reached the table that my brother was sitting at, we were surprised to see a girl sitting with Jared.
When she saw us, she stood up quickly and stared at me. She had shoulder length red hair, blue eyes, and wore a brown sheepskin shirt and matching pants. She had black boots that went up to her shin.
"Rachel, Orrin, this is Devra Coltern. She was a friend of mine when we were kids."
"Oh! Yeah, we were just talking about her!" Orrin said happily. I looked up at him, confused.
"We were?"
"Yeah, I suppose you should apologize, huh?"
"Wait, what? Oh!" I turned to the girl, who was still looking at me, and clasped my hands together. "Devra, right?" she nodded, "I'm sorry for scaring you, I was just a little kid and-" I stopped when I realized she was laughing.
"It's fine! Ha-ha! It was so long ago, and I was so little, it doesn't matter! You are fine!"
I blinked, freezing on spot for a moment, then smiled. "Are you sure? It must've been pretty traumatic for a seven year old see our family use our powers!"
"Well that may be true, but I was curious about you guys too. After I ran from you, I tried to track you guys down and found Jared again, and he taught me all about your history."
I looked over to my brother in surprise. "Did you ever tell me about that? My memories are still all... fuzzy."
Jared rubbed the back of his head and looked down at his plate of lamb. "Err... no. I didn't tell anyone about her. Our family is extremely secretive and we aren't supposed to tell outsiders of our powers. You have no idea how many rules we are breaking right now, just by being here. But I was a little kid, and I wanted another friend, so... so I thought maybe if I told her, we could hang out more!"
This time it was Devra who looked surprised. "Really?" she said with a high pitched voice, "that's so cute!" she blushed and coughed, "sorry. I don't usually sound like that."
I laughed, and Orrin snorted. I had almost forgotten that he was there. I turned to him, smiling from relief.
"Should we go get some food? I really can't get enough of their veil... after so long eating only fish and berries, well, I don't know, I'm kinda addicted to the meatier stuff..."
Orrin grinned and put his elbow on my shoulder. "Yeah bud, let's get some." we walked over to a big table where there were plates of food stacked up. Cuts of lamb, wild boar, and some sort of bird sat in platters, and were dripping with the sauces they had been roasted in. there were bowls of potatoes and carrots every few meat platters, and stacks of plates at the end of the table to put your choice of food on. Jugs of warm cider and beer were at the opposite end.
"Wow, that is a lot of food..." Orrin gasped, wide eyed.
"Our hunters just came back, and they brought a lot more food than normal, and we had a lot of sheep this year." Hiccup said as he walked up to us.
"Huh. That makes sense." Orrin replied, grabbing a plate and starting to stack food onto it.
"So um... why are you sitting over there?" Hiccup asked me.
"I wanted to sit with the members of my sort of family, no offense to you, but I haven't seen them for years and I don't actually know you very well, to be honest."
Hiccup nodded. "That's understandable, I'll leave you to catching up." he walked back to his friends and their shenanigans, while I turned to the stacks of food and began to do like Orrin was, and make a mound of meat.
Walking back to Jared and Devra, we got to hear the middle of their conversation.
"But so I've been hopping from island to island, looking for you guys ever since. But I never found anything until today, and here I am!" Devra was exclaiming.
"And your parents just let you leave? That's so weird!" Jared replied, I could see his hand move towards hers, but then he caught sight of us and he pulled it away and under the table.
"Ah... um, well see... I actually don't know my parents very well. I haven't talked to them in years, and the last time I did, it seemed like they just didn't care. So I stopped caring about them. I don't know why I should like them if they don't like me." Devra had brought her hands closer to her body, and started to pick at her nails.
"Oh. I'm sorry for asking. I shouldn't pry into your life. We still cool?"
Devra smiled and put her hand out to shake, which Jared took quickly. "You're fine. Sorry to worry you."
"Great. So what do you want to do after breakfast?" he asked, changing the subject quickly.
"Hmm. well, it seems like almost everyone here has a dragon or two, how about we find a dragon for me?"
"That's a great idea!" I said, sitting down next to her. Orrin sat across from me, next to Jared. "Do you have any type in mind?"
"Hmm. well I like the smaller dragons, they are less intimidating... maybe some terrors?"
At that moment, three of my Frinters and Lucy dove from the rafters and at one of Orrin's lamb legs.
"Hey!" he cried, jumping back, while Jared and I laughed.
"Whoa..." Devra muttered. "What kind is that?" she was watching Lucy tear at the meat in the corner.
"Lucy? She's a friend of mine. She is a Ripslash. They ride wind currents and since their bodies are so light, they don't need wings. They can also swim under water."
"She's beautiful... can I...?" he turned to me.
"You'll have to ask her. She is her own responsibility."
"She speaks?"
"Via telepathy. Other dragons can speak, not her kind though. If she likes you, then you can be her rider. If she doesn't... we'll find you a group of terrors and some bandages."
She sat still for a second, then stood up, looking at the multicolored dragon, but I pulled in her arm to sit her back down.
"Step one of winning Lucy's heart; don't interrupt her while she's eating."
Devra nodded and sat down, finishing her food and continuing to have idle chatter with us, looking at Lucy from time to time.
well i hope you guys like it, i know its kinda short for the fact i didn't update for so long, but i've been having a kinda rough time.
Devra Coltern is an OC sent to me from Angel of Randomosity, and i hope i got her character right!
its not too late to send in an OC, i only have three so far, and if you are interested, here's the OC form (again):
NAME: yeah, i made it longer, that just makes writing the character easier for me. if you are going to submit someone, please don't make their personality just like "tomboy, funny, serious, ect..." it is nearly impossible to make a person from that, so if you could explain them a little more, you will get my eternal gratification.
HAIR COLOR:
EYE COLOR:PERSONALITY:
WEAPON (they are going to be in an army so this is required):
DRAGON/DRAGON NAME (if they ride): (dragons taken are skrit, lucy, kry, and the canon kids dragons)
WHETHER THEY ARE GOOD OR EVIL:
BACK STORY:
THEY COULD BE A PART OF RACHEL AND JARED'S FAMILY, BUT THEY'D HAVE TO BE DISTANT COUSINS OR SOMETHING, AND IF SO, WHAT WOULD THEIR POWER BE:
LOVE INTEREST MAYBE?
HOBBIES:
it would be awesome of you guys to review, but if youve given up on me, i totally get it. i have been gone for... *counts fingers* 9 months. I suck and am a horrible person.
